How in the fuck do you get Super Mario World hacks working on retroarch? IPS patching only gives me a black screen. Snes9x can't seem to soft patch when using retroarch either. Soo I don't know if it's the ISO (which I don't think it is) or ppsspp itself, but when I try playing Hitman Reborn Battle Arena 2 I get some weird shit going on. When Player 1 moves to the right side and starts facing left, the character will moonwalk when trying to move to the right and will reverse shuffle when trying to move to the left. Basically directional inputs and the sprite itself aren't mirrored as they should be when on the right facing left i.e. trying to dash to the left will make you dash to the right and vice versa.

I've tried multiple ISOs and they were all the same albeit they were dumped by the same group (couldn't find any that weren't dumped by Caravan) but that shouldn't be a problem because I've seen videos of the people playing the game normally using that dump.
>>

If I had to take a guess, it's CRT-Royale using the shadow mask filter. You need a 4k monitor or to downscale from 4k to properly use it. Keep in mind that downscaling won't look as good as an actual 4k monitor though

Do I need to compile all those files or do I just drop them in a folder somewhere?
>>
>>126476885
You'd need to compile it. If you can't compile it yourself, I could upload it somewhere for you if you know of a simple file sharing site I can use without registering or some shit.

That being said, just like another anon in the thread said earlier, it might be because you were using a headered/non-headered ROM when you were supposed to use the reverse.

http://www.romhacking.net/utilities/400/

This utility will tell you if your ROM has a header or not, and will let you remove/add them easily without doing HEX fuckery. Use it on a clean ROM, give it a header if the patch needs it, remove the header if it doesn't, and then try it before we resort to bzsnes.

Tell me about emulating pokemon games. I was thinking about starting with LeafGreen/FireRed but from my understanding you can't complete the game without trading and I didn't know how the emulator handled that. I mean I guess it could sense the battery files from the other game but I wanted to consult the necrosages first.

Isn't "100%ing" a game or even trying to a good diagnostic sign for autism and should never actually be attempted by a normal human? Back when I was on Gamefaqs long ago I used to think it was harmless, but now I realize there are thousands, perhaps millions of people, wasting their lives collecting every single thing, every single item, doing every side quest in a game, etc.

Isn't Pokemon relatively easy to complete 100%? Trading aside it's just about capturing each Pokemon once right? That sounds relatively fun if you enjoy the game (I don't).

You're right to not like them for screenshots. Gaming mags didn't slap a CRT filter on their screenshots of games: they took the source image, the real game. They showed that. Once someone has the source they can apply whatever filter they want to it--but by taking a pic of an already filtered screen you are denying that possibility.

1.) Download Final Burn Alpha
2.) Download a Neo-Geo ROM. For example, I will use Metal Slug 2
3.) DON'T FUCKING CHANGE THE NAME OF THE ROM! For Metal Slug 2, it'll be named "mslug2.zip". If the site you downloaded it from does not automatically have Metal Slug 2 named that, it is a shitty site you should never visit again. THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT! Do not unzip the ROM, you want to load the .zip.
4.)Point Final Burn Alpha to that shit and run it

This isn't rocket science, but it's a bit archaic in terms of usability if you've never done it before.

When there's many systems I'm interested in playing via emulator, I think it's fair to be picky. I don't have time to work on all of them, so I have to pick the most suitable ones to work on.

The flicker at 30Hz is really tiring. It's not like I really notice it when it's there but I definitely notice an improvement when I switch to 60Hz. It's like that strobe of old neon lights. It's not directly linked to the framerate of whatever you're watching, it just means that the screen will display the same image several times in a row but the flicker rate will still be higher than 30Hz.

LCDs don't flicker (quite the opposite really since they're prone to ghosting) so it's irrelevant there.

>>
>>126572540
Not to mention comparing two architecture that have very little in common,

I mean seriously can you even seriously compare the EE with a generic ARM CPU?

Not to mention the GS and all of it's mindfuckery compared to some generic GLES GPU..
>>
>>126572540

Processor:
Old 3DS has a more modern, but slightly slower processor than the PS2. New 3DS is quite a bit faster, however. The PS2 does have lots of weird coprocessors though.

Graphics:
The 3DS does have vertex and geometry shaders, but these can easily be simulated by the PS2's VUs. However the PS2's GPU is an ungodly fast but simple rasterizer, suitable for multipass rendering. The 3DS's GPU just isn't. The one thing the 3DS's GPU has going for it is fragment lighting. And the PS2 could probably fake that.

Sound:
The 3DS has a custom DSP, allowing for advanced and programmable sound processing. The PS2 does not, instead basically just having 2 PS1 SPUs smacked together, made to output at 48000Hz and called the SPU2. But, at least most audio effects are in the SPU2's fixed hardware.

In conclusion: The PS2 is significantly better than the Old 3DS, while being about on par with the New 3DS.

Its a seriously bad port. Its one of the reasons I sold my 3DS and decided I could wait for emulation if I really want to play any 3ds games.

Hey /emugen/, pleb here, I'm just coming back to thank you again, I gave RetroArch a try and it seems to be working like a dream now. Thank you again, you all made my week.
>>
>>126573036
>>126573273

I think the difference in architecture makes it very difficult to compare the both of them, I'm pretty sure that DQVIII would look quite different if it had been developed primarily for the 3DS. That means that all straight ports will probably bias against the 3DS. It's like comparing the PSX and SNES using Chrono Trigger.

These days it seems everybody's converging towards the same architectures so I guess it won't be that much of a problem in the future.

That being said I can believe that the PS2 is more powerful, 3DS games aren't really graphically impressive. They tend to look sharper though but then again most PS2 games look blurry natively.
>>
>>126573892
>They tend to look sharper though but then again most PS2 games look blurry natively.
Progressive mode negates a lot of said blurriness.
>>
Is Mother 3 playable in emulation? I constantly hear about sound sync issues and I'm also bad at hitting the beats right. should i just git gud
>>
>>126572540
It makes them feel good if their favorite company is better. They identify with the company. It is a form of stockholm syndrome.
>>
>>126574192
Retroarch with GPU hard sync enabled greatly improves it, still not the same as real hardware but way more manageable than standalone VBA-M
>>
>>126573273
>The PS2 is significantly better than the Old 3DS
This is just sad. Nintendo hardware, why are you so bad?
>>
>>126574935
Because it's a cheap handeld, it can't have much power to begin with and technically doesn't need that much.
>>
>>126571870
It's not. If you see other comparisons there's still a few missing trees (unlike that screenshot) but the graphics are mostly the same. I'm still excited to have a portable version of the game that isn't on a phone. There will still be no good reason to emulate the 3DS version of the game over the PS2 version.
>>
>>126575761
This was barely an excuse for the original 3DS, but not even close for the N3DS. Compare it with similarly priced cell phones. 720p resolution with the hardware to support it for less than $200. Nintendo is just a sly jew that has a huge defense force. Hard to tell who is worse between them and Apple.
>>
>>126464017
>>126464405

About DC's WinCe emulation...

I tried Sega Rally 2 on Demul and it worked slow as fuck (on menus, surprisingly fullspeed ingame) with random crashes ingame. Is that normal or it could be just the build i'm using? Because on YT there is a guy that was able to play it normally...
>>
>>126576353
That picture was probably an emulation vs 3DS comparison, but the PS2 is still noticeably better looking than the 3DS. The PS2 version is actually sharper looking with more detail. The 3DS version tries to cover it up by giving you some bloom.
>>
So, would watching broadcast TV on a CRT give headaches?
>>
>>126576917
What's your point? I already agree with you. I'm just saying that other videos of the 3DS version (which is out in Japan) aren't as shitty looking as this one comparison that's always posted from before the port's release.
>>
>>126577118
Eh, its just my own anger towards Nintendo for cheaping out on their handheld showing through. Don't take it personally. I just feel a need to point out that the 3DS version still looks worse than the PS2 version considering how old and outdated the PS2 is.
>>
>>126556016
CRTs with long phosphor persistence don't really flicker much at 60Hz. It's when you go below 55Hz that flicker becomes more noticeable.
>>
>>126569916
Don't become an alcoholic or a drug addict now.
>>
So, how is that cycle-accurate N64 emulator coming along?
>>
>>126576449
It's pretty easy
One's mobile devices consistently score the highest points in benchmarks
>>
I bought an ibuffalo SNES, but it doesnt seem to be detected by programs like xpadder or joy2key. It works on emulators perfectly though. How do I make it work on either program?
>>
Some more questions for N3DS owners-
How's the performance with NES, GB/GBA, TG-16, & Genesis on it's RA port?
Is blargSNES any good?
While I know not many here emulate that machine, how's fMSX in 3DS RA?
>>
>>126580479
>One's mobile devices consistently score the highest points in benchmarks
The fact that you think this irrelevant, and not 100% accurate detail is the only thing that matters shows how much Apple has a hold over you.

Weird. mGBA should be made recommended though, at this point VBA-M has only cons attached to it at this stage. Hopefully Shonumi's work matures though.

>>

Most likely never. I code for my own stuff now. Ask kode54 instead, I heard he plays with Mac/Linux stuff.
>>

Randomly jumping in here. I've read that you use VBA-M to be able to play multiplayer on games like Crystal Chronicles. Can you do the same with mGBA?
>>
>>126576449

Thing is, you have Sony that lies to everybody and tells you they have a 1.2 to 2GHz handheld, when the damn thing is running at 333MHz max. Nintendo doesnt tell lies like that at least.
>>
>>126586861
Why isn't that page locked from being edited by ip editors? It was like that a week ago, wasn't it?
>>
>>126557014
75 is more than enough for me in my CRT. i only go above that for modern games if anything, since I'd have to lower my resolution

Not sure to be honest, I haven't played around with MP to be honest, that was more bgk and skidau's work I think on VBA-M. Afterall skidau did the dolphin-vbam integration.

I mainly did core work and other things back in the day. I hardly touch anything emulation related now, I just stick to my exe packer and its DRM fork now, and some audio DSP junk for FB2K.
>>
>>126589027
They lie, just not in ways you care about. For example, the lie about not censoring. At least Sony is a lot better about selling you hardware for closer to what its worth. Sure, it isn't much of a consolation, but it is one I will take.

PS Vita is actually slower than New 3DS with a CPU at 333/444Mhz max. So the hardware cannot be that good.

Don't listen to this guy, neither nulldc, Reicast, Makaron, or Demul can really emulate the DC 100%. All have tradeoffs.

Why wouldn't you want to play the Dragon Quests on 3DS? 7 and the two DQMs are remade from scratch with lots of love, and so much better than the already good originals (especially the Game Boy games). Additionally we have DQM Joker 3 and DQ11 incoming

Monster Hunter on the other hand I'll probably never get

>>
>>126605717
>>126606341
My man, I can sense your frustration but despite the shittiness of present day Square Enix I can guarantee you the above mentioned remakes are fucking golden.

In the case of the first DQMs their scope was so limited the remakes are basically completely new games built upon the foundation of the originals. Say what you want about the scout system but IMO it seriously beats the complete randomness of the originals where you can't even actively try to recruit monsters and must only grind until something happens.

I'm not really a fan of the Joker sub series and its Goku character designs but as good as the last two DQMs on the 3DS were I'm sure it'll be good once it drops in a few months.

Try shitting on VII remake if you want but it's taken away the shitty bits from the original, stuffed it into a modified version of the DQM engine and added even more content. Once the translated version drops I'm sure you'll be less salty. ;)

Never mentioned X but yeah that one is definitely better played on PC or Wii U. The 3DS port was only done for poorfags who don't have anything but the 3DS and got universally shit on.

As for XI, I'm not so sure. Considering the hardware power gap and difference in style from what's been shown so far, it might turn out good after all. Could end up being another experience altogether depending on the amount of effort being put into it, something like the 3DS/Wii U split for the newest Smash except if the 3DS version was actually good.

You also have Theatrythm Dragon Quest which was an enjoyable romp through most of the classic tunes from throughout the series, VII being a little too underrepresented is about the only complaint I've got for it.

My usage charts on the 3DS are dominated by DQ games but YMMV

If you need analog sticks, grab a PS3 or a PS4 controller. They both pair just fine with Android phones and you can find clips that mount your phone to them.

If you don't need analog sticks, grab the SNES30 or the SFC30 and the clip that 8bitdo makes for them. Pic related. Feels just like the original SNES controller and appears to have great reviews among everyone who's tried it.
>>
That reminds me that I got myself an xbone controller for christmas like someone here recommended.

The D-pad is so much better that it's beyond comparing and the triggers feel nicer but for some reason I find the L1/R1 shoulder buttons completely broken. Maybe it's because I have big hands but I tend to press them close to the center and it doesn't work properly while it's just fine with the xbox360. I don't understand how they managed to mess that one up, it's just a fucking button.

But oh well, it's worth it for the D-pad alone.

>>
>>126649849
Latitude. A magnetic device set for working at a certain latitude doesn't correctly work on another. The americans, germans and IIRC the brits too learned that lesson at their own expense with their shit torpedoes during WW2. On the other hands the nips didn't have that problem because they conducted extensive tests.

>>
>>126650219

Degauss don't actually cancel the magnetic change, they just reduce and randomize it so that it doesn't introduce a visible bias.

Protip: you shouldn't use your TV's degaus apparatus to avoid triggering magnetic military weapons.
>>
>>126650482
>they just reduce and randomize it so that it doesn't introduce a visible bias.
That still depends on the latitude, if you google it you'd know that some people that imported CRTs and had problems with degaussing not properly working because they were tuned for different latitudes.
Why I'm asking if degaussing is tunable? Because if I were to spend stupid amounts of money on a high quality CRT I'd want the shit to properly work where I live.
>>
>>126650791

I didn't know it was dependent on the latitude, I've never heard about anybody having any issue with this back when CRTs were ubiquitous.

Anyway most quality CRTs will contain all kinds of setting to fine tune the aspect of the image so you should be able to compensate for bias using that if it really comes to that.
>>
>>126651118

Nevermind that, it's silly. It won't fix color problems.
>>
>>126650791

That's an interesting topic, I had never thought about that. I guess back then you could just buy a CRT made for your region specifically and you were good to go. But these days you might need to import which might cause problems.

I guess your best bet would be to buy a good used CRT where you live, you should be able to get one for very cheap. I have a bunch of friends who work in cinema and TV and when they upgrade their equipment they discard dozens of professional grade monitors at a time.

Here I drew a picture.

It's because they work like this. It's a long lever that presses a switch under the guide button. I think it's actually pretty sweet because there's a stop on the side you press and the length of the lever acts like tension relief to keep the switch from getting smashed in or ripped off the board which is how literally every 360 controller I ever owned ended up breaking.

You just have to get used to pressing on the ends and not right on top of the fulcrum, which isn't even an issue for me; I don't know how people complain about it so much.

It's because the way torrents work all the files are split up into segments, and at the ends of files one segment almost always covers two files, so all those files are ones that share segments with the files you asked for and you only actually have like 2MBs or so of them.

Transmission adds .part to incomplete files so you can tell at a glance when this happens; it's kind of weird that qbittorrent doesn't do something similar.

btw if you've ever seen a torrent with padding files, they are there to prevent this from happening. It will be set up so all the files will share their half filled pieces with the padding file instead of other actual files.

Rez works fine with reicast libretro core on Linux.

It's broken on standalone because skmp purposefully stubbed out the RTT codepath because he feels it makes things too slow. I guess on random poorfag ARM hardware that might be true, but stubbing it out for PC makes no sense at all.

You have less buttons than the dualshock, no select, the D-pad is terrible, you have to stick your indexes between the triggers and the fuckhuge memory card holder. Oh and the cord at the bottom of the controller, what the fuck was that about.

At least the single "clicky" analog stick isn't too bad.

Isn't that counterproductive for an analog stick, though? If there is a bump it means that zone will be sticky, making it impossible to do fine corrections.

I don't remember if it was really useful but it feels subtle enough not to be a problem at least. I kinda like how it feels rotating it around but I can't be bothered to replug my Dreamcast to give it a try. The analog stick and ABXY buttons are the only decent thing about this controller though, everything else is garbage. I guess the two extension slots were a nice novelty if you had any use for them.

Take the PSX for instance, if you want to map the buttons correctly you have to make assumptions about the physical layout of the buttons. Retropad uses the convention set by the SNES.

>>126717172

What if you use a PS3 controller? There's no A or B here. There's no perfect solution. I think settling for an arbitrary convention is probably the best way to handle it.

>>
>>126717303

The average RetroArch kiddie never even saw a Dreamcast in real life.

>>126717418
>Take the PSX for instance, if you want to map the buttons correctly you have to make assumptions about the physical layout of the buttons.

"O" has always been the confirm and "X" the cancel button in Japan which makes it the same as the SNES layout.

In all honesty RetroPad A should always be the confirm and B the cancel button regardless of the original controller layout, SEGAs challenging design decisions are not your problem.
>>
>>126717901

It's tricky assigning semantics to buttons. For fighting games for instance it's the actual physical layout that matters. And as you know on the PlayStation X and O tend to be swapped between the japanese and international releases (although not always) so it would be difficult to make sure that "A" always confirms and "B" always cancels unless you start making a list of game-specific keybindings.

the button map in retroarch is perfectly fine...
>>
>>126722370

I think the main issue is that many people use xbox 360/one controllers on PC and those use the same convention as the dreamcast, which means that the A/B and X/Y buttons are swapped. It's unfortunate but it's not really solvable.

So tried the reicast core again but still doesn't work despite having the BIOS in the correct directory and the build posted 5 days ago working fine in it's own install.

>>
>>126724398
>>126724157
By default it's now
system_directory = "default"
Which fucks up everything that asks for a BIOS if you put it in the system directory like it used to be, but it works fine if you put the BIOS where your rom is.

system_directory = ":\system" is what it was before that.

Dunno the logic behind that change but probably something that should be added to the wiki for now.

Well anyways the reicast core is looking real nice even if it's graphically broken on most of the games I tested, and totally broken on one other.
>>
>>126725819
Maybe ask SP the reason for the change, he might have done it for a reason or it might simply be a small mistake.
>>
The way Rez progressively breaks more and more with the reicast core is really trippy. At first it seems like it runs perfectly. Then the graphics start to glitch out more and more until you can barely see anything.

Are there any emulators which simulate interlace flicker to improve sharpness and detail?

Presently comparing my BVM to one of my monitors that I use and the flicker from 480i on the BVM sharpens the image (Playstation 2) which gives it quite a nice image, in contrast to the heavy pixels and slight blur displayed on a progressive screen.
Although I could sharpen the image on the monitor itself, it still pertains some of its blur, however I'm unsure if this is due to the up-scaler or its simply a component of 'analogue' output from a playstation 2 console.

>>126699193
>Seriously considering getting an EverDrive64 and UltraHDMI to go with it whenever the fuck that comes out. N64 emulation will never get anywhere and the system never felt right anyway without the real controller with a brand-new analog stick
Unless you're trying to play some obscure game like Vigilante 8, you're absolutely wrong. In fact for some games, emulator is superior. Super Smash Bros lags in 4 player mode, but not on emulator.

I'm not interested in playing 'some' obscure game but rather everything. N64 is my favorite console after the SNES and there's always some fuckery involved when emulating it, minor or major. Just in the case of Smash I'll agree that is playable on the Wii VC release which has GameCube controller mappings set to match the rest of the series, but it's not particularly good anyway after a few nostalgia sets.

When even launch titles like (the fucking excellent) Pilotwings have problems to this day, you're gonna have to sit down and ask yourself how much more abuse you're willing to take

I want to play arcade games with mame but I'm retarded and don't understand how to make it work with the latest version.

I found a torrent on tpb that has mame ready to go and a shitload of roms but it's from years ago. My question is does it really matter if it's an old version? Did mame improve a lot since then?
>>
>>126730880
>torrent on tpb that has mame ready to go and a shitload of roms
Dude, no. Just no. Using MAME is stupidly easy. I knew computer illiterate people who were able to play with it back in highschool.
Just download the latest MAMEUI64, grab the roms you want from whatever rom site (emuparadise usually works) and stick them in the roms folder.
Or I'd tell you to get Retroarch but I don't use it personally so I don't know if it's actually easier or "harder" to use than MAMEUI.
>>
I asked /vr/, but given the rather slow speed of the board felt it would be a good idea to ask again here:

What is the current state of dreamcast emulation? How good are they and how compatible are they with games? Do I need a powerful computer to get it to run without problems or shitty framerate?

>>
>>126735374
If it's telling you to download other stuff it's because you need dependencies. Generally these will be the system bios, and then the rom's parent if you've downloaded a clone.
When you're picking a version try to always choose the one with the simplest name. It's a vague suggestion but it varies from game to game.

Does anyone know what emulators are color corrected and which aren't?

I've been using tvout-tweaks shader with TVOUT_TV_COLOR_LEVELS set to 1. When playing mednafen PS1, Metal Slug X seems to look great with that option but most other games like Dino Crisis (see pic), FF9, Vagrant Story become extremely dark. I'd assume every emulator would need a limited color range of 16-235 but mednafen seems to be already color corrected.

I think Mednafen already outputs correct colors, just disable it for that core.

Gambatte also has it's own color correction that can be disabled.

If you want to emulate the effects of a composite NTSC encoder, then apply NTSC shader first, then apply the CRT shader.

>downownload scp dual shock controller shit

thanks you fucking geniuses this is entirely better than that chink "spyware" you got me off of to use this instead
>>
Got RetroArch running on a toaster I'm trying to niggerrig into a HTPC. Most shaders run fine on its R5 220, but goddamn some of those CRT shaders slow it to a crawl for no real gain over far more performant shaders.

Are you using the new Xinput wrapper from Nefarius?

The original one by SCP is outdated and obsolete.

>Why can everyone else get it to work on Windows, but not me?
Try setting your system directory manually and make sure it contain a folder named dc that contains a Dreamcast BIOS name dc_boot.bin and dc_flash.bin

Also yeah the new build is much better but some 3D titles from Psikyo still suffer massive graphical glitches, but those might be present on standalone. though (can't test no ARM shitbox and the most recent video is more than a year old)

Both version have the 100% CPU bug.

Convince me to emulate Monster Hunter Freedom Unite instead of playing it on the Vita.

Protip: You can't.
>>

I've done that, though.
I've even moved the system folder, but I know the BIOS is loading.
I know the image is fine and loading.
It gets to a series of four "HASH" commands in the command window and crashes.

It works and it's free, you faggot.

Latest reicast core seems to have fixed a lot of the graphical glitches in Windows. The HUD elements still flicker in Soul Calibur though, and some o the background graphics are still bugged.

Is there any Xinput wrapper driver that works on any generic DirectInput controller that isn't PS3/PS4's?

X360ce is a bitch to deal with.
>>
>>126796513
That's an old nullDC bug, IIRC

You probably don't like messing with plugins either but everyone outside emugen is fine with it

Look into Fightcade. It's pretty much the new GGPO.

Thanks. I've combined the NTSC shader with the CRT-Lottes shader successfully.
