You could wait a bit and hope some interesting mod comes out. Or try something interesting that you haven't done. Poke around the settings, make a custom faction, whatever floats your boat. Custom factions can actually make things more interesting; if done right.

I dont think you'll be able to get a refund for EL from steam. Last time I read up on their support each hour you accumulate on a bought game only increased the likelihood of them refusing your refund request..

A little Endless Legend chat, I've only played a game up to turn 120 and the lack of documentation for this game gets to me every time. I have no idea how well I ought to be doing, and the game's custom setting means that I can't make a good inference to my progress. Artillery by the year 1600 AD is something I can understand as being excellent progress, but palladium by turn 100? What the hell is palladium? Does anyone else run into this problem while playing?
>>
>>126369081

>>126329231

I had a pretty fun persia ICS game. Though, their UU is pretty crap. You can sometimes get a situational use of it by putting it inside a city state and having it in rough terrain with cover and have it tank up levels. You can only farm one unit at a time like this, you get +4 exp per turn I would guess?
>>
>>126374340
I could have kept using it. but I had already won at that point.

Yeah Immortals do suck.
>>
>>126375236

Actual warmongers have a way faster rate of xp gain, and even for being able to relatively peacefully gain exp its a bad investment.

Just all around bad unit. I thought chariots were bad for egypt, but dear god was I wrong. If you can get them out before walls/archer they can actually rush a nearby civ down
>>
>>126374059
>>126372570
>>126370595
>historical frame of reference

Yeah, this was basically my argument. The game takes it on faith that you can figure out the marketplace, that you know how many heroes you need, and half a dozen other systems before getting into the radically different benchmarks expected for each civilization. Should I trust my governors to automate production? How much should I be investing in my empire plans? The wikis are fucking awful.

Banished is pretty fun. The trick is to always monitor the city resource panel thing. Keep things like food, clothing, wood/stone at high levels. Place things strategically, for example, hunting cabins are great... if they're placed a little ways into those dense forests. Otherwise you'll get less out of them. Invest in a school immediately. It'll help speed your workers up in the long-run.

the governors are ok to automate at first but once you get familiar with the mechanics you'll want to minimax everything.
I generally put as much as I can into empire planning unless I need the influence for something specific, like if I am Cultist and I'm converting stuff a lot. Empire plans are always worth it IMO. I either boost my strong point or try and compensate for a weakness with it.

If you want a different experience you can check out the Community Balance Patch. It's not on the Workshop, but it completely retools happiness and city-state diplomacy, reworks every Civ to have 1 building/improvement and 1 unit, and rebalances the social policy trees to be very competitive with each other.
>>
>>126381327
I've just started modding recently myself. I think everything JFD does is pretty good. You should try the community balance patch, I think it gives the game much needed tweaks and an overall fresh feeling. Just be careful that the mods you add don't cause imbalance in the game, that's the struggle I'm having so far with 50+ mods.

You could try what >>126387225 recommended, but along with it:

Sukritact's Events and Decisions
Mercenaries
Info Addict
More luxuries deluxe
Really Advanced Setup
Emigration (haven't tried it yet but seems cool)
No XP cap from fighting Barbarians

I think AoW3 is VERY fun. But it's much more action orientated than any of the other games discussed here.

The fun comes from all the massive amount of content. No two games are the same since the combinations for armies are more or less endless with all the dozens of summons, neutral dwellings etc. etc.

It's more or less a dumbed down 4XG for the people who like to play around with hundreds of different unit types in a fantasy setting.
>>
>>126369081
>A little Endless Legend chat,
if you need to compare to see if you're doing alright, use the score chart breakdown. you'll see whos ahead in what, and that will give an idea of where you are.
and your analogy is valid, you dont know when you should be having palladium, because the way EL works, you could completely skip it if you wanted to. titansteel is a valid replacement and even then, you could skip the techs for the both of them, and save on 1-4 researches

score is going to be your best metric, and then, plan on a city every empire plan. if you're even at a city every other empire plan after a few of them, you're still doing fine
>>
>>126375909
the real problem is, the tutorial is slightly terrible. you already know how to play the game, you just havent realized it yet
FIDSI isn't different than civ5's city management by much at all. "oh, i want to have a tall city quick, i better settle by these wheat and bananas" settle on a river grassland, and use workers toward food. industry is just shields, dust is gold, you get it. the real advantage is you can convert cities to one or another production later in their life easily, by building new buildings and moving the workers.

its not exact by a wide margin, but presume (early) food > industry > dust > science > influence > (late) food
broken lords quickly put dust before industry, and cultists instantly put influence above that all.
heroes are a whole different thing based on your dust production, but ideally you have one for every city, and pretty quickly, you shouldn't need governors managing for you.

empire plan is going to be different for each race, but use it logically. broken lords dont need to up their unfluence so they can get +food empire plan. roving clans dont really need to make their war better, when they're never going to be at war. just think of the empire plan, as a way to focus on a FIDSI you want, and that might help you decide

Honestly every victory type is manageable at lower difficulties. Just get a lot of cities via settling/conquest and then build dust buildings and you will be all set for the Dust victory.
Also, if you're worried about the dust requirements, it might be good to know that the requirement is for the total dust produced over the course of a game. You can spend all the dust you want and still win.

Yeah go AoW3. It's fun albeit a way more arcadey form of 4x than the Civ games.

Still, depending on map size and victory conditions, games can take a long time to finish. My main gripe is probably that the amount of time it takes to tech up to Top Tier units is not relative at all to the amount of time it takes to conquer the entire map (which takes ages). But on the plus side, there's dozens of exploring to do, more than any other 4x game.
>>
How to cultists?
>>
>>126406971
>>126403281

Just make sure to play aggressively, if you play it like a 4X and turtle up before you attack your enemy will have three and a half armies at each city. It's the game's one big flaw imo.

But yeah, the heroes are great, it's a lot like Master of Magic or Heroes of might and magic if you've played that, you can fight as a unit, which you can arm with magic items and level how you want, plus you can fling down spells into battles or on the map. Good variety of classes and races, I usually play a goblin sorcerer, supplementing my fragile swarm darters and meh high tier units with phantasm warriors and beholders. The rogue can literally pimp out "courtesan ambassadors" to improve relations with neutral cities and keep friendly ones in an iron grip for more gold but their units aren't as good, the dreadnought has crappy spells overall but can build cannons and golems etc.
>>
>>126402597

I usually attack another race as soon as I run out of delicious minor factions to eat. Especially once they get proliferators your economy is violence based.
>>
>Never liked managing more than several cities, one is ideal
>get EL
>discover Cultists
Today is a good day. On another note, is there a special way one plays Ardent Mages? They look cool, but I feel like I'm pretty shit with them.
>>
>>126456282

Build cities with the towers' radius in mind and use them often. A city with a cul de sac in the middle you can stick a science tower is great!
>>
>>126456282
they're just a normal faction, rather than SCIENCE the way lords are DUST
their big difference (other than pretty much needing a good minor unit) is that they have to build their cities retarded, so they can get the best out of their pillars.
unlike other factions, you're not going to be spending dust on buildings, but on pillars. mid/late game, best case senario you have as many as you fucking can, and your city looks retarded
>>
>>126457267
>>126457194
Oh I guess that makes sense. I hadn't thought about building around pillars. Is it possible to have higher level districts then if I'm building around towers, or will pretty much everything be level 1?
>>
>>126457831
you can have two, i think theres an actual pattern on the wiki or forums.
honestly though, the same way a pyramid city is only slightly better than a line city, and only late in the game, a pillar city isn't that much better than a line city with pillars

if you want to be lazy, just put a line city with two kinks in it, going the same direction. and space between the kinks for pillars

Exploit those wonders, if RNG is gonna bless you then so be it.
>>
Do I want to slightly distort my city layout to incorporate anomalies?
>>
>>126459435
I know i shouldn't care, but if i manage to actually win Deity i'd like to make it count, and not have some random asshole say "that's EASY if you get +16 faith per turn".

No shit it's easy if i get there, but i actually have to get those wonders and get them fats to make their bonuses worth their while.

I really like Endless Legend, is Endless Space worth getting or is EL noticeably improved to the point there's no reason to play ES?
>>
>>126462115
EL is pretty much improved in every way. ES has some nice lore in the flavor texts but that's it.

Mayhap wait for ES2.
>>
>>126462115
If you like Sci-fi ES might be worth it.
You might just want to wait for ES2 though.

My dad's favorite game/series is Civ, he's been playing it consistently since Civ II. It's pretty much all he does some days. He suggested maybe playing a co-op game sometime once the Steam drama dies down.

Does anyone have any good recs for him? He's not big into shooters or RPGs, so I'm having difficulty finding anything he might enjoy.
>>
>>126474420
all we know is he likes civ and dislikes shooters and rpgs

play civ or an endless game with him?

Distant Worlds

If he likes customizing his shit he can custom make his own ships/bases/nations etc in the game. Nice space setting

Expanding on this one, the Warlord gets the best economy because he pays next to no upkeep and can instantly get max rank on his units (lots of fun with units that "evolve" with experience like spiders or cavalry->knights). Archdruids play Pokemon and gotta catch all the wild animals. Necromancers have shit for economy but can basically operate without cities at all when the skeleton snowball starts rolling. Theocrats can lay down some serious smiting, with Paladins that refuse to quit and a literal Ark of the Covenant to go around melting faces.

Races are fun if boilerplate. Dwarves like armor and defense, elves are ranged masters and get a bit of lightning damage, Orcs are all about fightin' an' winnin', humans up their production and are great sailors, goblins are cheap and give out poison like goddamn candy.

Halflings are fun because they're "lucky" and attacks occasionally miss them completely. But morale effects them way more heavily than other races, and they'll fall to fucking bits if you force them to fight anywhere that ain't rolling grassy hills. They also get chefs/Party Golems that wear aprons and serve picnics.

Draconians heal fast, Tigrans ARE fast and are bloodthirsty little furballs, and Frostlings will freeze your entire army.

My tip though is to ignore settlers and city building for the most part and stick to Fortresses instead. They only cost 100 gold, put out your domain around them can be upgraded, and give you whatever gold/mana/science that's there. Plus you can always go back and plop a city inside the fort if there's a lot of hammers or happiness around which gives you free walls around the city.

Never understood the people that treated it just like Civ or EL and set the game up to have deathstacks and carpet the map with cities.

>warlord
>"his"

I'm sorry, his or hers. There's a huge amount of customization in AoW3 for a strategy title, and you get to craft your leader's appearance like it's an RPG. You also pick from a few magic specializations that add whole new dimensions to your strategy. My favorite has to be the Grey Guard mastery, which forces you to play like a sadistic bureaucrat trying to stay karmatically neutral.

Why is it that I cannot, for the life of me, manage wide / ICS in BNW? If I'm playing tall or if I'm going full-Autocracy I have absolutely no issues, but if I'm not aiming for a Domination victory my wide empire inevitably crumbles, from a lack of resources or from outside invasion.

What is the secret to playing wide?
>>
>>126487884
playing for fun
>>
>>126487884
Civ V is specifically designed to discourage playing wide. It's certainly possible to pull off, but it's much harder than building tall and you WILL eventually hit a stopping point where expanding further will do more harm than good.

The alternative to going full-on Autocracy is doing a Sacred Sites playthrough, where you'll often just win the game outright before your expansion runs out of steam. Otherwise, focus on grabbing as much sources of happiness as you can possible muster: Policies, religion, buildings, you simply can't have enough happiness when going wide.
>>
>>126488015
>>126488303
Thank you for the advice. I'm mostly just happy to know that there's not something specifically wrong with me (besides that I play on Settler 6) and that the game's mechanics make playing wide a struggle.
>>
Does EL still have no option to disable simultaneous turns with the AI? I'd love to pick it up but that was the thing that pissed me off to no end in ES.

>not niggering with amphibious promotions on archipelago
>>
>>126490862
I'd just play as the Vikings then.
>>
>>126487884
ICS needs very specific playstyles with very specific goals. It can get tedious as you are fine tuning many many cities rather than like 5 or so.
Wide however can just mean early expansion. I find 8-12 cities shitted out before medieval then barely any more from that point (on huge maps) works really well.
Open liberty, beeline collective rule, then go piety and try to pick up a good reformation. From there its either finish liberty, piety or go for protectionism.
Domination, Cultural or Diplo victories. Science if you somehow get 12 mountains or something or are playing Korea/babbylon/inca/polan.

>>126490905
Nigger no. Songhai or shaka. Songhai comes equipped with amphibious from the get go and shaka does shaka things. Vikings aren't cool enough to roll with the big nigs.

What's your favorite bullshit AoW3 tactic?
>>
>>126497982
Man, my favorite bit of cheese has to be grabbing Air Adept on Dreadnought and casting Seeker on musketeers and cannons.

Hey, has anyone here seen Madmac's writeups for AoW3? I really fell in love with this game through the Something Awful community and there's been an awesome thread on the game. Big part of it was the fact that one of the game developers (Gerblyn there, and I think Tombles on the O.F.s) was a regular poster, and the other reason was the efforts of a dude named Madmac. He hosted a Goon Tournament this past year and wrote up an awesome guide for the game going through every class, race, spell sphere, everything. I'm rereading it, and could dump the text here if there's interest. Should at least keep the thread on the board.

So I'm strongly considering FE:LH. I absolutely love Age of Wonders 3, as well as Stardock's other games like GalCiv2 and 3. However, I played a bit of Endless Legend and didn't care much for it (mostly thought the factions were silly/odd and the combat sucked), and I also find the Civilization series to be a bit boring. Should I pick this up? Also these two DLC for GalCiv3, are they okay for the price or is there a serious issue with them that I should avoid?

The lulz is strong here. Greece has had a revolution every turn for 10+ turns now, cycling between Freedom, Order and Autocracy. For those who need a reminder, when you change ideology you produce nothing for 5 turns - no gold, science, culture, etc.

It's just like real life.

Who was the weirdest choice for a civ in the series:
HRE, Venice, Huns or Sweden?
>>
>>126522864

Probably Venice or HRE.

Both Huns and Swedes you can track down to a specific cultural group of people.

HRE is a loose confederacy of feudal states. Venice is just a city state. Might as well include "Athens" instead of Greece.

>>
>>126540398
Rather than buying a ton of pop in one city, you should settle many cities and buy the pop for cheaper in each. Of course, if you've got a mega city that will give you 13 dust/pop, then you might as well buy some more population there.
>>
>>126540941
When you say 13 dust/pop, do you mean 13 dust for every 1 population? Just to make sure.
>>
>>126531401
Scout well, pick out a fantastic spot for your second city and beeline the free settler. Make sure you pick up the Pyramids and the Oracle, use the tree completion bonus for a free Great Engineer and use it to rush a wonder (your preference here, but good ones are Petra, Hagia Sophia, Alhambra).

Wage wars and use your workers to help heal your units - they can repair pillaged tiles on enemy land in 1 turn with the worker boost from both Liberty and the Pyramids, which lets you pillage them again.
>>
>>126542418
You can assign workers to a certain yield and there are building that will increase that yield. 13 dust/pop means each pop you put into dust output will yield 13 dust/turn
