I havent been happy with a fortress in over 2 years.

I always build the basics, and after a few migrant waves hate the way things are going and close it

Generally I hate when I have sloppy stockpiles, sloppy looking passages to magma forges.

It's almost like I have to embark on a volcano to be happy.
>>
>>126094054
How do you cave in an aquifer?
>>
>>126095343
you channel an area in the aquifer itself, then cave in a big chunk of stone 1 level above it to fall in. this kills the water and the stone that falls is mine-able.

Yeah I'm finding that it's a lot simpler to have a dwarf turn rocks into crafts and then trade them for supplies that would otherwise take several dwarfs, workshops, and labors enabled.
>>
>>126100864
It's a lot easier to get in and start dying horrible deathshaving fun quickly, especially when you can't figure out how to do shit like switch gear, eat, figure out where the fuck you are, etc. Once you get the basic controls down it's easier to get killed doing stupid shit rather than because you almost starved to death and then bogeymen jumped up and down on your head.

I tried to launch myself across a chunk of ocean in a minecart... it hurt, I'm really glad I'm way the fuck more durable than a vanilla adventurer because the cart kept bouncing against my lungs and shit before I skipped to a stop in the ocean.

Normally you won't be doing stupid dorf tricks like that, so unless you try to punch out an ettin barehanded and naked it is just a matter of making sure you keep a companion (or disable bogeymen if you get bored of them) or find somewhere indoors at night to sleep, knowing you can heat a waterskin by a campfire, dump it out, and refill the skin from the puddle before slaking your thirst from it as well, and knowing that you can do shift+A to aim attacks and use multi-attack+dodging to get your ass out of tight situations like a pack of wolves or bandits trying to take your head off.

It would be really cool if breaching the candy pipes would permamently affect the world, demon invasions, giant surge of goblin population, demons invading sites and more and more coming out each day.
The only way to stop it would be invade now a demon fortress and force a cave-in or count on a rare chance for someone to go and do it in legends.

If you can beat it, a sense of accomplishment, bragging rights, and unfettered access to the shiny blue. There are some very easy and very cheesy ways to beat the HFS, but it's possible to do with military if you don't roll any fuck-you-impossible clown types. Sometimes you'll pull some dusters with soft inorganics, and they'll do half the work for you. Sometimes it's flying steel webbers as far as the eye can see.

It might be. If it is, it doesn't have anything to do with your plump helmet man. Insurrections in dwarven sites seem to wait for a player to show up before getting underway, or at least are a lot more likely to occur when the player is present.

>>126110756
No not really just depends on the layer its in and a few other things that you have next to no control over other then turning them off.
>>
>>126110756
Yes, but it's not a hard limit. It depends on how deep your sedimentary layers go. If you have conglomerate and/or siltstone under your soil then your aquifer could be very deep. The deepest I've ever gone through myself was 7z. I've seen a 13z aquifer pierce documented on bay12 before.
>>
>>126099269
Is this adamantine?
>>
>>126107901
there's been some discussion regarding this. right now, if a site is destroyed by demons, they'll just stay in the site and not leave. toady has commented, saying that he thinks it would be too much for the whole circus to get unleashed and start destroying the world, but it may be eventually that most of them hang around, but a few of them leave and do their thing.
>>
>>126111446
If it was adamantine it wouldn't stand there. It's probably microcline.

>>126111719

What's a proper Dwarven taven, library, and temple, /dfg/?

I'm making a 5x5 20 ft pit that will have all the tavern stuff in it ringing various areas around it.

As far as a Library goes I was going to pump out a portion of the magma sea and make a library in the firey depths. That way if anyone tries to steal my the KNOWLEDGE contained within I can flood the whole thing.

For a temple, maybe have the entire thing over an open portion of the magma sea, so the heat might test the faithful?

you need one temple for each diety or you will get polytheistic dwarves stuck in worship limbo. They pray to only one god but check the needs on both of them. their desire to pray to the 2nd god continues to rise, but they only ever pray to the first.

designating separate temples for every god alleviates the problems most of the time, but yo may still have one that gets stuck from time to time.

This little shit really doesn't want to cooperate as far as moving somewhere where she won't murder all my people. Pulling the alert burrow makes her come along with everyone else, but she won't go to a burrow I directly assign her to. I just tried to wall her in as she was standing outside, and then she up and left just before the last block was placed. I'll figure something out, I swear.

I also decided to check her profile, and what the fuck I swear she was only two before she first turned how the fuck is she 37 and still a child.

They don't kill everytime they feed, and it takes 12 years for dwarves to reach adulthood. Anyway, the replacement rate of dwarves is higher than the attrition rate, or else dwarves would go extinct. In human civs their vampires inevitably build up in the largest population centers and cause sever depopulation. It's being treated as a bug and is supposed to be fixed in the next version.
>>
if you call out a vampire, they become revealed as a night creature with the N tile, but no one around becomes hostile to them, and they don't become hostile either. you can call them a vampire and then argue about values with them.

Burrows only determine where a dwarf is allowed to do jobs. They don't restrict a dwarf's movement at all. To force her to go somewhere draft her and use a station order. Though that won't work for a kid, so you might be SoL. You could always just put her bedroom there.

soap is definitely worth just buying rather than the bullshit of making. same goes with pearlash if you can get it in quantities. literally nowhere close to time in versus value of item.

leather (and meat) are vastly better to buy since you can easily order it once and always have more than ever needed. but leather itself is only good to have around in case. cloth/silk clothes are much more valuable, wear out at the same rate, and most importantly are easily made.

why even bother with leather ever unless its a backpack/waterskin?

Is it possible to have a fort where everyone has their house, workshop, and dining room all in one place for each dwarf?

Can dwarves belonging to a burrow leave to get food and drink to eat/drink so long as they can return to a dining room in their burrow?

Just assign one or two hauler dorfs to act as transport.
>>
>>126158335
I thought of that too, but food and booze stack in a weird way.
If I give each dwarf a personal booze and food barrel, will the food be distributed evenly enough so no one starves?
Maybe I could employ a lot of "take from" food stockpiles, but there is still the problem of one dwarf getting all the food stocks while others receive none.
Shit I might as well just do it instead of asking so I can see for myself.

no, not at all, they'll travel really long ways to get to wealth. in fact it really makes no difference where they're based unless you're playing in adventurer mode. I just assumed from your post that you were dissatisfied with that world, it's probably fine
>>
>>126177298
>Explain
Reservoirs with open areas near them will sometimes be overflowing, or the game just decides that the adjacent areas are also supposed to be filled with magma or water. Probably related to the overflowing magma sea/ocean on unretire bug.
As for the prisoners thing, uncaged enemies just scatter, which can be a pain if you have a bunch of goblins on chains, but usually they'll be trying to escape. Caged creatures will just spawn outside their cages, which can lead to big masses of enemies or dangerous wildlife/megabeasts in the heart of your fortress. This can kill a fort in minutes, as your military will be wearing civvie clothes on unretire and will have to spend a month reequipping before they can respond. And I probably don't have to explain how an overflowing magma reservoir can destroy a fort.

Vampires fabricate an identity, so their age and past group memberships aren't a tell. The squad that took the most casualties (9/10 died) was my oldest, most highly trained squad. I had them stationed in the cavern to protect my magma metal industry. Trolls kept coming up and destroying my shops. The first two FB's that came up got dealt with swiftly and effectively. Then when I rotated that squad back up to rest I actually got attacked by 2 or 3 titans and they saved us from those as well. I rotated the A squad (senior squad) back down to give B some rest and then satan himself materialized as an FB. It was like a crab or some shit that breathed fire. I figured it'd be like the others, but boy was I wrong. My framerate dropped to 2 - 4 FPS and I noticed all my soldiers were dying. Popped down there to see what was going on and there was just smoke everywhere. Checked the reports and he was tearing through my soldiers like they were peasants. Sent my 2 squads down as back up. The C squad was fresh and not all of them had even gotten their armor yet, nor had they changed from "Recruit" to a real profession.

Poor bastards.

Weremammoths are the size of a bus and are usually legendary fighters. They also have the built-in resistance to weapons that forgotten beasts and megabeasts don't have. kinda hard to answer. maybe the things you're ordering made require multiple ingredients? if you link a stockpile to a workshop that makes the workshop only able to take ingredients from linked stockpiles.

say you want to only smelt iron ore adjacent to the smelter, so you make a stockpile and fill it with iron ore. then tell it to give to the smelter. w ell the smelter refuses to work because you didn't supply it with charcoal bars and even though there are some close to it, it will only accept ones from the stockpiles you've told to give to it.

Dwarfs have gotten so good that they cancel other dwarfs jobs.

I noticed this a lot with smelters, most jobs got canceled because they couldn't get refined coal but there was.
Best thing to do is to give each stockpile to give to one workshop and take from a bigger stockpile so dwarfs don't fuck each other over by using items.
They use an item and fucks up another dwarfs job.

I don't know if it's really well set up, but it works
the one-square stockpile is linked to the magma smelter in my case, which is nice because then the furnace operators won't run halfway across the map to get THAT stone that they really want, but it also means they won't use anything (including fuel) that isn't in a linked stockpile

Okay. I pulled the wrong lever accidentally and it killed him. He was a little slower than the others anyways so the only big loss is his equipment.

If I pulled the right lever, it would have dropped 8 dwarfs into my moat because an elf thief was drawing my sword dwarfs over a different bridge right as I was preparing for a goblin siege

Yes, that's exactly the problem. When a bin is targeted by a "store item in stockpile task" it can't be found for use by a workshop. If the workshop job has already begun, but not yet grabbed an item from a bin, and that bin is then targeted by store item job, then the workshop job will cancel. Bins in general cause all kinds of stupid little inefficiencies and industry hiccups. Best not to use them at all.

>>
>>126206026
no minecart track at all, just a track stop (dumps south) built straight onto the floor
since the minecart spends all its time on that track stop and the track stop dumps everything on it, everything that enters the minecart gets dumped out right away. you don't need any depart conditions or whatever, just the stockpile link.

>>
>>126206280
Nah, that was changed in .40 with the job priorities update. .40.16? Something like that. Now they leave the bins, but their contents still can't be used until the job is done. It's an improvement, but not enough of one to justify using bins yet.
>>
>>126206389
Divine material. When an instrument is brought from outside your map, it randomly generates the materials that it's made from at the map edge. The list looks at all valid materials without any kind of sanity check, so can get instruments and books and scrolls with impossible materials (like bogeyman parchment) or materials that could normally only be found in vaults (divine metal/cloth).
>>
>>126206389
Not an instrument, just a part of an instrument. If you can get the remaining parts, you can assemble the instrument. To be able to use it, however, you will need a performer who knows about elven music.

So I normally build fortresses with a straight central staircase. I decided to try it differently and do things chaotically and "naturally", with staircases and ramps as needed.

However, my doctor can't get food for a wounded patient. He himself can make it to the food just fine (I removed the hospital zone, watched him waltz down to the stockpile, and take a nice long drink), but it keeps saying there is no path.

I wish I'd saved the screenshot, but in one fort I ended up with a stone inside a wheelbarrow which itself was inside another wheelbarrow, and that one was inside yet another wheelbarrow. picking the outermost wheelbarrow up and barely crawling over to the hauling route under the weight, a hauler then put the whole mess inside a minecart and abandoned it
dwarves don't do anything intelligently
>>
>>126186306
Having idlers is the sign of a healthy, well managed fort. It means you have an army of laborers ready at a moment's notice to fix any problem that might arise while playing without disruption your fort's regular operations. Once you get used to the game and manage your hauling/stockpile/workflow properly, you'll always have spare idlers when not involved in a megaproject or when you're not clearing up after a siege.

they used to do that exclusively in 40.x, you'd have to completely decommission their barracks if you wanted them to do anything else.
they're a little better about it in 42.x, they'll at least tend to their religious/entertainment needs, but they still spend the vast majority of their time training.

They are, but this cannibalism only occurs in legends mode, and even there only after they've killed an opponent.

Their ethics forbid killing ANYTHING unless necessary, if I remember right(correct me if I'm wrong).

Their cannibalism appears to be mostly ritualised.

Well, sometimes you can lose companions if you have to travel too far and they turn back to where they came from/were last able to follow.

You can't rest while swimming to let them catch up... but you know what you can do while crossing an ocean with a companion in tow, even one who won't swim despite her lack of needing to breathe?

Super sieges with dragons and troll waves when?
>>
>>126225768
trolls will come pretty soon after goblins start attacking you, usually in the second siege (which may be a while after the first but is usually closely followed by more). they're pretty harmless really, since they tend to have low combat skills and dubious equipment
I don't think goblins use any beasts other than trolls/beak dogs/ogres/blizzard men in this version, unless you get exceptionally lucky

regardless, 50k is smalltime

pretty impressive stuff. I've never been a big fan of moats, I prefer to go underground, but regardless that looks like it should work. I'd recommend setting up either an atom smasher or a magma-filled pit so that you can get rid of sentient corpses, leaving them sitting around might eventually freak out civilians who have to walk past them

Just keep an eye on those nearby trees, and hope npcs keep forgetting how many of them can swim.

I was sitting there talking to my elf bitch dance partner on the bottom of the ocean trying to encourage her to follow me... she don't need to breathe, so she just sat there on the bottom like... what are you getting at, is that a new dance or something?

Being a killer isn't negative, it's just a statement of fact: you kill people, you kill monsters, if you do it enough you can even be a legendary killer.

If you kill random people in town that everyone knows they'll call you an unhinged murderer and spit at you.

You won't get much of a reputation for beating up bandits, you do it because you want to do it, to save someone from being robbed, or to get their shit.

You kill dragons and shit to become a legendary hero. People still say you are a killer, but they will be astounded to meet you and thank you for keeping them safe.

You rescue kids (currently kinda buggy since they escape and go no quarter while playing pretend every time I've tried so far) and return them home to become a legendary hero without being a killer.

You sing and dance and tell stories to become far more famous than I've ever been as a hero.

if you drop creatures onto serrated disc traps, they'll get sliced up. it seems to work better if you drop them from a considerable height (try 15+ z-levels) and obviously if you stack up a bunch of high-quality serrated discs in every square.

you can butcher sentients that way too - or at least you could back when pitting worked that way - since a sufficiently sliced-up body will rot into usable bone pieces. takes a little effort to set up and can freak your civilians out, but going into battle against goblins armed with hundreds of masterpiece goblin bone bolts is great

well, "fixed," in that it won't crash your game anymore but it's still kind of fucked (constructions built there will sometimes disappear, leaves poke through in weird ways, sometimes it seems like they don't line up with the actual tree branch later, etc.)
