Kek, the hardest faction I fought was the Taifa of Barcelona. One army slipped by my forces - as the Umayyads - and raided every turn all the way to my capital. My army could not catch it for some odd reason. Just always one extra step away on the map. Not to mention the other two armies with stacked forces that rivaled my three armies in power. Each of their cities was level II, WITH garrison posts adding more men. Sieges were bloody.

Charlemagne put up two armies, like you said, and I felt underwhelmed. Kinda odd

I've finished 5 of the 16 Spanish units (the cha_gen ones), and there's usually sharing of a base VMD so that Royal guardsmen might have the same look as Royal cav or royal knights. Once the Spanish are done I will try and do some of the less fun bug-fixing for FOTE, then Dresden and I will upload that FOTE update and my reskin (you'll need to download FOTE but only run pack 1 and 2 - that will give you the skins needed but not any of the battlefield/stat stuff so you will only have the reskins with vanilla stats and battlefield mechanics. I'll explain what to do once I upload that reskin package).

Avetis is an awesome guy and helps us on FOTE but yeah, I think he and I do have differing interpretations and design choices on material or appearances of units. I do tend to prefer a greater scaling of armor so the look of heavies is really distinct. If anything I think I am a bit too liberal in how much armor I assign, but I bear in mind that we have to sacrifice some level of accuracy to get satisfactory gameplay. For one I have to wonder if cavalry in most settings should be able to any degree to really bowl over an enemy given how much it's hammered home that horses will not be convinced (nor will any sensible man want to ) to run right into a solid wall of men. But such a setup - almost 0 charge, low penetration and more of an emphasis on scares infantry would be terrible for the AI and the player most likely.

Though I wonder if perhaps by the time you get the medieval knight post hastings they didn't truly bowl over into the enemy given how firsthand accounts really do speak to the ferocity of their charge and the fact that a charge of Norman kngihts could 'drill a hole through the walls of babylon'. Odds are extensive use of spurs, harsh bits for the horse and an intentional willingness to charge could get a horse to damn the consequences and run right into a mass of men.

But long and short I'd give his work a try. Looking at his Cordoba reskin it doesn't seem too over-armored.

It's an interesting and pivotal moment of history, with the major playable factions (Romans, Sassanids, Caliphate, Khazars or Avars depending on the map among others) having unique cultures and fighting styles. The Eastern Romans are victorious over the Sassanids and Avars but utterly exhausted and depleted so there's a kind of WRE AttilaTW feeling, the Sassanids have been shattered and are suffering from internal courtly intrigue from hell with some possible rump states/breaking apart already happening, the Avars have the rebellious slavs after the failure of the siege of Constantinople - and if you go full map they have the Merovingians starting to push on them from the West, the Lombards are acting up in Italy, the Khazars are poised to take advantage of the chaos.

Romans are in a cavalry centric but still some infantry tactical doctrine moment, the Sassanids are still heavy cavalry and Turkic style horse archer oriented, the Arabs are predominately infantry of the line and with time and technology will unlock more cavalry and heavier cavalry, the Khazars are steppe nomads, the Avars are steppe nomads with hordes of slavic cannon fodder, and you could possibly include the Berbers of the maghreb and the Lombards of Italy.

It's all a fuck lot more interesting than the rumored R2 DLC of the Roman conquest of Britain, and would offer more varied rosters and cultures/factions than an Arthurian 5th-6th century British Isles campaign of the Anglo-Saxons, Romano-Britons, Picts, Welsh and Irish.

If you can actually secure a rout to the town center without coming under tower fire-via onagers usually-then you'll take less casualties manually. A lot of times they'll sally forth because you have superior range and get slaughtered in the field in front of their town.

But yeah, your traditional "storm the streets and battle towards the town center" nonsense will get 500 men killed whereas the autoresolve will only lose like 100-200.

Basically unless you can cheese the shit out of them, autoresolve. The absolute worst autoresolve will do to you is about the same as doing it manually.

Man this was a boring campaign. Only quest i got was the forming kingdom of England and the only event i got was some researcher asking if he could leave my court to join Charlemagne. When I play Attila my PC shut down.
Sometimes it is hour or half sometimes it is 5 minutes or 10.
My PC tell me at the restart that it find power surge and shut down to protect itself.

In fact the only records of the ancient world that shows female warriors was the Scythian peoples around the Black Sea where the "Amazons" legend comes from and some tribes of Celts in the far north of Europe. Kushite women were also known in small numbers around Aethiopia.

Personally I got it just to add new units and a full female army of spear women and archers for shits and giggles is hilarious especially when they scream. One of my favourite units in Rome 1 just for the banshee screams.

Women just like in any war are the most valuable resource so the idea they fought in huge numbers side by side with men is ridiculous especially considering tribes and clans lived and died by the amount of fertile women they had.

They migrated from their starting territory in the first few turns, went and took over territory I wanted in Tarraconensis, lost it to rebels, moved to Magna Graecia, lost that territory to rebels, moved to Ajax, lost THAT to rebels, took it back, but decided to liberate the WRE instead, and now they are where they are now.

Our new king, Theodoric, bastard of Alaric, told us that Wallia, our second king, died of natural causes. What a sad day.
