PS2 would be cheaper, but if he does go for PS3, get the hardware emulation models, like CECHA or CECHB. CECHC and CECHE have software emulation, which tends to hurt most games.
CECHG, H, J, K, L, M, P, and Q are all fat without backwards. I have a CECHH.
Anything with a - after the CECH are slims.
CECHA is best.

Also consider what TV you'll be playing on. Unless you're fine with 240p on a 1080p TV with horrible upscaling and potential input lag.
If a PS3 backwards fixes that, I cannot say. At least the holy trinity has 16:9 support, so...

Look at the aircraft tree, find what you want, and formulate a plan to get there. You'll get research from doing online missions, so just hop into some co-op rooms and get started. You'll git gud eventually, so don't worry about performance in the early stages, just do the best you can.

You complete the mission.
The game will then randomly choose two items that are open for research.
Plus another if you were on the winning team.
Plus another if you have a research contract Plus another if you used a stocked fuel, but that is guaranteed to do research on the plane you used.

Research is random, just so you know, so try not to have too many things open to research at a time. You unlock things in the tree by buying whatever comes before them, so just follow the lines and you'll see what you're in for.

This. For the love of god do not open too many paths. You will get stuck if you do. Find the aircraft you want to buy and only advance in the path to unlock it. Then you can worry about parts.

Remember using starter aircrafts as a main is possible too. Given enough levels they can perform just as well as those later in the tree. Special weapons are probably the most important thing to consider when choosing a main.

Goyplanes are gimmicks don't fall for them.

AC04 has a thing where you can skim the surface without instantly exploding if you get the angle right and are not in Ace mode.
Put Very Easy and choose a plane with high defense stat for maximum ground surfing. (larger wing spans = better ground rolls.)

So naturally you'll want try it with the A-10.

Getting the weirdest thing when I get my post sortie research report. Currently have my T-50 Akula researching to lvl 9, so when I see the small increase after the mission, the Akula is shown in the second row of sp fighters. However, when I look at it in the hanger, it is back on the top row. Anybody else experience something like that, or can confirm their sp fighter is in a different position after post sortie than in the hanger?

How maneuverable was the F-117? Because of its design, it was aerodynamically unstable in all 3 axis of flight, and has to be corrected via a computer. But wouldn't that make it really maneuverable, since that's the principle used by a lot of supermanuverable jets?

I got it like a month or two ago, played maybe 12 missions. It's cool but you have to disable the "press Y to win" button. I'm doing my first play through with the button enabled and if I ever replay it, then I will disable it and play it the way that Ace Combat was meant to be played.

The game has normal controls. You need to use the D-pad to switch special weapons since Y is reserved for the instawin button, even if you disable it (can't re-map it to another useful function). I have the New 3DS and I think it comes with 2 extra shoulder buttons, so I can comfortably control the yaw.

Overall it's a neat little game. The sound is cool, the music is great (they use the WBA hard song in one of the missions). Olsen's voice sounds cool during mission briefings. Might be a little more annoying to play if you have an older 3DS but otherwise it's enjoyable.

I kind of hope that AC7 doesn't have that "High G" turn horse shit. Makes flying look so much less graceful and just overall stupid.

Going back and playing the PS2 games, turn fights actually felt like a duel or dance. Actually feels like flying an airplane that is going hundreds of miles per hour.


Its not going to happen though. They'll bring back the "press both triggers to become a thrust vectoring Su-37" mechanic because its in every game now.

That plus they already said they want to focus on having players be able to perform crazy maneuvers, instead of having it be a quicktime event.

Honestly something like HAWX 2's system (It was a bad game i know) where you could go into a mode that turned off fly-by-wire/flight assist and let your plane do crazy shit at the expense of being able to stall and lose control super easy.
