For a first play through pick whatever origin you like they won't matter unless you're min maxing for PvP super hard.

There are no bad weapons, mess around with stuff until you find a moveset you like. Only advice I'll give you on stats is that VIT is more important early than other stuff since scaling doesn't start doing work until later in the game. If you see a weapon you want to try then get the base stats for it and give it a whirl, it might have crap damage at first since it's not upgraded but try to focus on it's function, raw numbers will come and so will more upgrade materials.

Make sure to explore as much of the city as possible and check on any npcs you find, talk at windows and doors. Check back with people you meet now and again.

Going only 1 stat or going only melee is fucking retarded. None of the previous games "metas" made you do that. With 120-125 you could make a build that had 40/40/40/40 if you wanted. You had so many more possibilities. You could play a magic dex fag with a shitton of health and end, you could be a low end midrolling miracle/magic user that uses mlgs and velkas talisman and have enough stats to use a good secondary enchanted weapon, etc etc etc.

In this game at bl80 or bl98 you get little to no variety. You are either straight dex, straight str, "quality" (quotes because there is no 2handing to up your AR so even though 25/50 seems like quality it's really fucking shit compared to 27/40 in previous games), arc, or bloodtinge. There is no wiggle room.

Want a straight dex character with some tools? Well have fun giving up half the weapons you could have used because you need to lower your strength extremely low. Want some bloodtinge for your sidearms? Well you can't unless you want to bring your vit down into 1-2 shot range. Etc etc etc.

Why limit yourself to 1 playstyle for every build when in every single iteration of souls most builds could fit in multiple things? Like melee and magic, or dex and str, or vit gouged melee, or end gouged melee with some magic thrown in.

Fights that go on for more than a couple of exchanges just get dull and tedious, which is why we always push for 98 with chalice gems as opposed to 98 sans gems or 140+ with them. Long fights in BB aren't a good thing, they don't work well with the game's combat system.

there are two separate defense stats. there is your DEF, which you get from leveling up, and there is your damage reduction, which you get from armor. damage reduction from armor is a straight 1% reduction for every 10 armor points

DEF is more complicated. it's a bimodal function. when AR >= DEF, then damage = 0.9 * AR * attack multiplier - 0.5 * DEF; that is, DEF reduces incoming damage by 0.5 per DEF. when AR < DEF, the value of DEF shrinks (because otherwise you would have attacks that do 0 damage)
