They are two separate quests - you have the other one in your mission menu and you can switch to it.

You can also pick up Lan'cord before picking up the research data and the outcome is the same as long as you do both before returning to NLA.

You don't though; you could find a dozen more mining probes scattered around just primordia. They're all over the place, and if you got them you would be able to get plenty of white cometite. Also, you could have actually explored or done basic missions while waiting for your cometite to come in.

Man I love L. His lines are great and Mindstorm might just be the single best skill a NPC can have, a spammable party buff + heal that costs no TP.

I'm really digging this whole party of Shield Troopers (plus me as Galactic Knight) idea, since they all have different ranged weapons they have different buffs. I really just need the NPCs to soak damage, buff/heal and generate TP for revivals. They suck dick at doing damage compared to a player with a proper Photon Saber melee or Sniper Rifle ranged build.

Potential affects a lot of things, not just TP skills. Hell, there are TP skills it doesn't even affect, and the absolute best skill which benefits from Potential is Mindstorm, which isn't a TP skill.

It's a weird stat that isn't properly explained. It's more akin to a magic power stat, any kind of healing or weird skills benefit from it. That goes for Skells too, random weird skills benefit from it.

Make sure you're finding points of interest and putting research probes there. You get a lot of bang for your buck that way. Also using duplicator probes with research probes as a temporary fix could work.
