>why do people make fun of game design?
Game designers are ideaguys. A real gamedev is already aware of game design but more importantly they can actually make the game they are designing. Nobody makes fun of game design but game "designers" are a joke.
>>
>>125614634
>i think you're not familiar with game development
Right and you also think making games for money isn't making games. You harbor selfserving delusions and insist others abide by them.
>making shovelware is different from regular gamedev
Calling things shovelware because it makes money doesn't change the fact that you're just boohooing about the success of games you aren't capable of creating.
>>
>>125615606

>>
>>125616020
>ideabros are cool but I can't imagine how fucking miserable I'd be if I wasn't able to code.
That's why they quickly stop being cool and turn into feedbackguys and self-appointed game critics. You can only sit around with good game design concepts for so long before doing nothing with them starts to drive you crazy. But as a feedbackfag or wannabe game critic they can demand that their "game design" senses are worth something and that gamedevs have to pay attention to them.

shovelware isnt actually game development it's 100% applied marketing. marketing is hard though, you have to be able to acquire data and analyze them correctly to understand and predict trends and traffic and how to monetize that traffic effectively. so i guarantee you the majority of shovelware devs are doing just as poorly as the majority of gamedevs.

We should be happy gamedev is starting to have standardized training. We can't be garage game designers forever, there needs to something more formal to prepare young devs for the industry. Video game scientists are something this area needs because we need things to be more factual, not so artsy-fartsy that we spend more time arguing what a video game should be about rather than working on the game. Less pink hair and half-shaved heads, more spectacles and white lab coats.

I'm rolling my own ECS, and everything is going great! Except when it comes to handling events that impact Entities rather than Systems (IE, a collision event or an explosion event).

At first I thought about making a system whose Update() did nothing, and would only do something if an Event it was listening for came along. It would look for the affected entities, then do a thing to those entities. But that doesn't fit right with me.

I don't want to give Components any logic, but the only thing I can think of is making some Components specifically for handling events, and they would just contain a function pointer to some delegate function. Is there any other way? What do you do, aggy?

I wish we could localize the pronunciation and just call it 'Yan-deer' or 'Sun-deer', it's easier and rolls of the tongue better than the weeb way for 'yan-dair-ray' or 't-sun-dair-ray' with the rolling R shit.

We don't pronounce the rolling R for Samurai in the west, so why do these particular words need to be difficult. In Japan, they pronounce western words however the fuck they want toanyway, but it's because they're speaking Japanese. If we go to their country, then yes we need to pronounce it their way, but if we're on western soil, then fuck it. We should say it the western way. And 4chan is western soil.

Never devved on a VR, but I'd say when they're near a wall, show a holodeck like grid in front of them (saying they can't go any further), and then they'd hold down a button on the controller which would lock the game world rotation, so when they moved/turned away from the (IRL) wall, the hologrid overlay would disappear, but they'd still be facing the same way in the game world, and when they released the controller button the world rotation would re-engage, maybe?

Heh, join the club.. please do not do this, we get treated like shit and need to suck good dick on top of being A+++ music makers. It is a dream and will only lead to suicide. If you are by some chance successful, you will only know music 20 out of 24 hours a day and become slave to the shitty corporate people that you must beg to hire you. They don't even give a shit about games, all they want is to make a quick buck and you're just an obstacle that they must overcome.

Sorry, I'm not a coder, and I don't really know computer stuff all that well, but sprites that are just 2 colors are typically called "1 bit sprites" as far as I've seen.
>>
>>125627296
those are some nice sprites

>>125626639
1bpp is maybe a little too classic I think

my current though is to have the sprites be 1bpp but not always draw them in black and white - screen wide there will be only one pallet but that pallet may change to simulate different environments or lighting

I'm also thinking of having things like the player character, enemies, and things that can be interacted with use a different pallet (and possibly 2bpp) but I am not sure on that

You've misunderstood my motivation for making music, and I do have a band with friends that I shit around with, but thats not what fulfills me as a musicbro.

I can't even listen to music if I'm not actively trying to learn music and create it for myself. When I was young every song I enjoyed depressed me. Happy and sad songs alike, they were beautiful things that I didn't understand and didn't think I could ever create myself. It was my first real crisis. Still to this day, the only thing that keeps me from feeling this way is a constant day by day effort to create something that moves me more and more, and to understand why I've been moved by those pieces of music I love.

Its lots of fun to make music for people who are working hard on their art and to come together to make something cool like a game, and its a feeling like no other when someone listens to your music and genuinely is moved by it, trust me, but there is only one person's feelings and acknowledgement that keeps me making music every day, and that my own.

The same can be said about anyone who truly cares about their art.
>>
>>125628702
Except I'm not doing it out of envy
If you truly love music then find another way to explore that love
The videogame industry, even the Indy one will only make you miserable and you will end up hating it.
Don't take my word for it, go to tigsource and look people looking for work 95% of them are musicians
>but he has a copsci degree he doesn't need to get hired because he doesn't need money

What if after that is back again to getting rejected another 1000 times?

>>125630053
I don't even know what that means at this point, all i said originally was "ya id love to be a paid composer". I didn't even so much as imply that i was even pursuing it, you must have really got fucked up this ass by something related to get this triggered by that.

>>125629847

Im trying to make it as an artist because I love art and I want to make art above all

>completely missing the point
I said it's not about money, you agreed. What happened?
Whatever it is that you want be it money, fame or just doing a good job you won't get it, not here. Because there are thousands of people willing to work for free and being mistreated.
If you want attention and appreciation and people listening and enjoying your work find another way
>>
>>125630540
I think YOU missed the point, my goal is to make music **I** am satisfied with, other people recognition is completely secondary. I DO NOT need recognition and appreciation to me musically satisfied. I do this for myself, i said that.
>>
>>125630126
Its a little bit wrong, if you believe that juice is effects in result of something the player did. Since this what anon posted is probably an NPC its just regular attack animation effects, rather than player driven juice, but that aside:

baking means to like, collapse layers into one. So if the monster is an art layer, and the shaking is some kind of effect filter (idk), baking would be like altering the original pixels (rendering to a gif for example) such that you can't "turn off" the shaking effect. Anon said that wasn't the case with what he did, which is cool. But imagine if all you had was the gif, and the designer or publisher decided they didn't want juice like that. If all you had was the gif with the baked in shake, you wouldn't be able to take it out, you'd have to go through frame by frame and move it around by hand. Or imagine if the enemy flashed red when it got hit.

The alternative is having the shaking effect or coloring effects just done in engine, where the asset you import is just plain vanilla, and modded by the engine, in a way
>>

Yes something like that.

I figure it'd be
1) get bullet's line
2) see where line is at center of monster
3) if point is inside monster's bounding box flag it to dodge
4) take monster -> bullet angle and add/subtract 90 degrees from it, have monster move in that angle

To make some monsters easier you could have them merely dodge when player shoots, with no knowledge of where the bullet's actually going.

Alright so the basic gameplay is pretty much a stable state minus the fact there's no tutorial or much variety.

Do you think cats should literally die when they're not fed enough or should they just go in a "dizzy state" that doesn't let them do anything (be bred or sold). The thing I light about them dying is that you have to handle the body/throw it away in a trash can or something.

Probably but not for many and don't bring know and mobas because its not fair nor Facebook games. Name a game with the depth, dialogue or plot of the average book. Last progress before bed. Started working on basic bullet particles upon it hitting a wall. Honestly I'm probably over programming this, so it's a little buggy right now. You can see how sometimes on the flat surfaces, sometimes there aren't any particles because of the way it detects what direction to fire the particles. Also haven't done particles for slopes yet.

I could just make the particles go off in the direction the bullet fired from, but I think that'd look bad at certain angles.

If you're talking about getting sucked into something, Elder Scrolls / Fallout games, also 4x or Sim City games can suck you in until you don't realize its 4am

I'd also say no form of art can match the rush you get from competative multiplayer, CTF in particular

If you want to talk about feels, you might have a point, the only feels from a game I know of are dropping the companion cube into the fire in Portal

As for complexity I'd argue some Grand Strategies allow the player to behave in very complex ways. But if youre talking about a richly developed world, I'd say its not fair to compare games to passive media, because with books or films its a 100% linear experience, basically a giant cutscene, so the dev can force the reader to experience the world exactly how they want it to come off. Whereas with games, since we have an expectation of freedom, you can't expect the player to read pages of text, so how they experience the world is much more volatile and subject to randomness

if you try to learn about the techniques film and books use to make you feel, you'll realize it's also a matter of technique.

stuff like bitwersweet endings can be easily made if you understand what is a character arc.

Most CS fags can't into storytelling.

>mfw all the "tutorials" is just folders with some extremely barebones text and graphics. No proper explanation about what anything really does.

Programming for games seems like something which might be very fun to do, but where the hell is the entrance? Where do you begin?
I did some tutorials at CodeAcademy, and that helped me understand a little bit more about what code in general IS, but there were no routes to follow once the tutorial was done.
I feel like I've just been given a novel in a foreign language and is expected to learn to speak the language based on guessing my way through what words mean and how the grammar works.

Link's Awakening
Final Fantasy 7
Heavy Rain
Borderlands 2
Quest 64
Call of Duty 4
Resident Evil 2 and the Gamecube Remake
Fuck it (I hope you're a qt girl), Fallout New Vegas

And that's just off the top of my head. Every one of those games had all kinds of crazy, oh shit moments, where you felt like you were part of the game world or were really close to one of the characters in the game. No movie or book comes close because you have no say and it's as linear as it gets, unless it's one of those Goosebumps Specials where you choose your own adventure (even had inventory lists and items you could collect and use, was great). In traditional media, you just sit there and get spoonfed drama, have one or two 'oh shit' moments and that's it and you return the dvd to Blockbuster, where as in video games, you ARE the drama, or at least part of it, and your actions determine what happens. And it sticks with you much longer compared to the book you returned to the library after reading it for a few days and forgetting about it. Traditional media is for lazy consumers that don't like to think too hard. They just sit there and consume it, then they write a paper about it pretending they understood it after looking it up on Sparknotes.

Trying to force movies into video games gives us bland linear games like Tomb Raider Remake, Resident 6, and every other waist high cover and corridor shooter we've been getting lately.

Imagine how much better Huckleberry Finn or To Kill a Mockingbird would have been if you were to climb into someone's skin and walk around in it instead of being forced to memorize and analyze pages of being TOLD what is going on for the next quiz. Imagine playing Atticus during the trial and and following through as the defense, knowing you're putting yourself and daughter at risk against the skinheads. Imagine being Tom Sawyer having to use critical thinking when deciding if you should snitch on Jim or not.

You aren't giving games enough credit.

Man you've come such a long way in such a short time. It's pretty impressive.

Do you know that screencap where the OP says "How do you go from this..." and the anon hijacks it with the Kermit picture? I was going to edit that, but with your original sprite as the OP and your new frog as Kermit, but I couldn't find your old posts or the screencap I'm thinking about so I couldn't do it. I promise though, that it would have been really funny had I successfully made the edit.

Python is high level? It feels so much cleaner and easier to read than MEL script.

I learned it over the summer from Code-academy having no prior coding experience. There's no way I'm some code wizard now.

Don't all languages kind of function the same? You build a function and tell it what to take, how to chew it and what to spit out?

High level means it takes care of a high level of stuff automatically.

Even between fairly imperative languages (the ones anyone uses) theres quite a bit of difference.
A person who only knows python would have a hell of a time learning C++ compared to learning javascript for example.

It does sometimes in small ways, but no. There are lots of arguments for doing things that way though, I actually prefer it, and the performance boost thats (usually) observed is only one of those arguments.

Memory managed vs non memory managed
and static vs dynamic typing is a debate that doesn't have any right answer, more just the right tool for the job.
>>
>>125647019
It's more that when you make stuff like that automatic, you lose a lot of opportunities to write fast code.

C++ has a lot of high level standard library features, which are still very fast, though.

We're all learning. If you really are too ashamed of your projects made in pursuit of greater knowledge and understanding, you can keep them to yourself, but what's most important is that you dev and work towards being able to make the games you want with the tools you want. The people who will chastise you for it are not people you should even be considering.

I think suicide rates among artists of any kind is pretty high. I'm not saying gamedev is a super emotional art thats 2deep or anything but artists by nature put their work out and live up to peoples expectations (or lack there of).

Even when you've "made it" when deadlines start rolling in and pressure builds up you can easily see how someone might want to just escape all the pressure.

The suicide bag was first widely mentioned in Derek Humphry's book Final Exit in 1992,[5][6] and its use with inert gases mentioned in a Supplement to Final Exit published in 2000.[7]

The "Exit Bag" was described as a large plastic bag with an adjustable velcro strip around the neck area.[8] Different models of the "Exit Bag" were described in Hemlock publications, and the use of helium was specified.[8] Philip Nitschke has stated that nitrogen has a lower risk of an adverse reaction by the body, but did not specify with regard to what other gas. Nitrogen has been advocated as a replacement for helium not because of reactions to helium, but due to a "temporary restriction on the availability of disposable helium in Australia (and New Zealand), helium has been difficult to procure."[9] In 2015, some suppliers of helium began mixing 20% air into their "party balloon" tanks, due to a global shortage of helium, making the tanks unsuitable for use with suicide bags.[10]

The "Customized Exit Bag" was described and briefly marketed in 1995 by the Right-to-Die Society of Canada in its privately distributed book, Beyond Final Exit.[11] Bruce Dunn wrote about the use of inert gases and a hood in the same volume,[12] and the idea was developed by ERGO.
