Libraries, books, multi-material instruments/artifacts/books/item framework, reactions can preserve artifact status, adventure mode takes place in a world that is ALIVE, and crazy, and chaotic and fun. Needs have to be taken into account, religious, social, intellectual, breaks are replaced by need satisfying, parties are replaced by actual musical performances and storytelling, masters and apprentices spread knowledge, dropping necromancer books off at your fort means you can have a fort of necromancers, and lots more.

I'm new at this game.

I made my fort around a column of stairs. The top connects to the outside world with a 3-square wide hallway which will be wired with traps soon.

My first wave of migrants arrived so I'm going to put together a militia of crossbow dwarves and make a second fortified hallway connecting the bottom of my fort to a death shaft going down to goblin town.

Don't be mean.
>>
Am I just getting the bug where shit dropped into an aquifer magically becomes more aquifer, or can you no longer just drop shit into the aquifer to punch through?
>>
>>125433051
As the wiki says they can't leave the burrow to do a 'job'. Eating and sleeping is also a 'job'. So they have to sleep and eat there.

As for taverns, that's anyone's guess. I wouldn't be surprised if Toady fucked up somewhere and it works differently from everything else.

>>125433150
I don't think that code has been touched. There should be no changes from previous versions.
>>
>>125433365

Alright, and judging from the wiki the burrow locations don't have to be linked for the dwarf to travel back and forth doing jobs.

So I'll assign each dwarf to his apartment, the tavern, and his workplace. A comfy totalitarian paradise.

also, cave-ins somehow do not destroy corpses, i did not know that.
>>

Individual Equipment

i.e. dwarf uses equipment you (the player) assigned for the whole squad, or dwarf uses equipment you specifically set for that specific dwarf only.
In other words, a squad-level 'default'/'custom' setting.

I'm not sure what information you're looking for.
Do you just want to know why merchants always leave your fort unhappy even though you gave them 1000 bucks profit for that 1 billion transaction?
Protip, they generally expect around 200% profit.
The quickstart guide explains it, and links to an in depth article IIRC.

Or do you want an overview of the system?

You sell created goods and raw material to the caravan, and receive other goods and raw material for it. No money involved, really.
You can request stuff, which they might bring (or bring more of), for an increased price.
They can request stuff, which you can or can not produce. They'll pay more for it.

There is no global or even fortress-wide economy (yet). Money exists technically, but isn't really used.

Caravan goods get generated from nothing (although I think it does consider what the respective civ could theoretically create and what it couldn't).

As always, use the wiki extensively.

>and then you go through those utterly confusing screens and then you have to remember all the shit that you wanted to trade to move it to the depot
Just search the wiki. There's a step-by-step guide through the whole thing.

Consider this:
There are two separate things going on; the trading and the diplomacy. Depending on when the diplomat meets your mayor and when your broker starts trading, these might come earlier or sooner.

Trading:
you bring stuff to the depot ([q]uery it), tell your broker to go there, and when your broker and stuff is at the depot, you begin trading ([q]uery it again, then press [t]). You can trade as often as you want.

Diplomacy:
Your mayor meets with the liaison, they tell you what they want NEXT YEAR, you tell them what you want NEXT YEAR. They also tell you what else happened in the world.

there's no good answer, it's frustrating as fuck, and just about every biome has them or kea or buzzards
either live completely underground or have a marksdwarf squad training outside from day 1 (the latter will still result in a lot of vengeful thoughts from civilians, just not as many)
>>

Very casual. The spikes (like everything else in your fort) are worth dosh, and the more dosh the bigger the invasion.

So they represent a small factor in how large the invasions will be.

Make sure you have hatch covers/doors at entrances so they don't steal your shit, otherwise just live and let live or assign more hunters or have your militia hunt them down ruthlessly.

If you kill every last one before they leave the area then they will be totally dead. If you let one go it'll eventually breed back to its original numbers. If you continuously kill every single vulture/kea/whatever that enters your embark site then within a few years you will drive all of them in the surrounding area to extinction and never have to deal with them again.

When will people learn that there is nothing negative about being called a "killer" in DF?

It literally just means that you killed someone. If you had killed them unprovoked, they'd call you a "murderer".

While it is possible to mod in a race that condemns all killing(even in self defense), no vanilla race will consider killing bad, unless it was unprovoked. They just call you a killer because you obviously killed someone.

Build a floor on the center square of the staircases and put a statue there or caged animals/prisoners, happy thoughts and the dorfs weren't using it anyways.

Setups like :

# X #
X # X
# X #

or

X # X
# X #
X # X

Are just as efficient dorfwise as the 3x3 but more interesting looking and you can play around with the layout more.

My last fetish was really tight rampspirals.

Z+0:
# ^ ^ #
v v # #
# # # #

Z-1:
# # # #
^ ^ # #
# v v #

Z-2:
# # # #
# # v v
# ^ ^ #

Z-3:
# v v #
# # ^ ^
# # # #

Repeat for Z-4, etc.

You can space them in the corners of a room, arrange them around a central staircase, etc, they're neat looking, dorfs trundle through them well, and they're a lot of fun as an adventurer.

You can even remove the side squares as long as you leave two next to the upramp.

They are just like real citizens, you can't make them unequip items either outside of the military. Go ahead, try to get one of your dwarves to take a piece of clothing off. You'll find that neither forbidding nor dumping will have any effect.

Being unable to make them change uniforms through the squad screen is exactly what I thought the problem was. Nice to know they actually are like real citizens.

So, anyone found a way to get a lot of elf residents yet?
I need it for reasons.

they stick around for a little bit iirc i tend to have a drawbridge blocking the depot when it's not in use mainly because i usually have a trap laden hallway used for transporting goods back and forth
>>
>>125471548
Well, it works, but now they're all naked beneath the armor.
>>
>>125473320
Actually, the game does a check whether there is a way to the depot just as the caravans arrive, and if there isn't, the wagon won't even spawn one map.

Keep the bridges down. If it bothers you, you can just have a squad train there, or leash a war animal, to keep it safe

You could do various things.
If you have a somewhat capable military, you should be fine just using that to kill them.
Otherwise, completely lock off the Trade Depot once they are inside. After that you can just do whatever. Fill it with water and let them drown, wait until they die of thirst/hunger or go insane and attack eachtother (I'm pretty sure they do that just like dwarves do).
You could also just carve fortications in the walls and shoot them.

Gotta remove the [CAN_LEARN] tag somehow, I use an interaction to do it in adventurer mode, dunno how well it would work out in fort mode.

Also added the reactions so elves would have booze (that is why taverns have none btw!) and books and got them to spawn a library tree first try.

So there are books ALL OVER THE FOREST RETREAT, I spawned way up in the northeast and the library is down southwest of the center and it is covered with books way up where I was.

So I get to the library tree and it takes thirty or fourty seconds at 10/10 speed to move... holy shit.

So I jump to get down there faster, random limbs and heads in the branches en-route, first message I see pop up:

That's a really lucky roll. Most of those demons will die in 1 hit. The ones made of flame will explode, so range is the way to go. Same if any have webs or deadly dust or poisonous vapors.
The sauropods could be bad if they have a anti-melee superpower (basically just the ones I listed above). What other kinds do you have? What are their abilities?
In any case, if you're sealed off you can just set up some cave in traps to kill the whole lot without losing a single dwarf. Or a checkerboard. Or a minecart cannon.

So in the interest of min-maxers out there who haven't yet worked this out.

Put all needs/traits at neutral except:

Harmony (value and trait)
Peace (value)
Not Intemperate
Avoids Brawls
Incurious
Not Vain
Not Greedy
Not Abstract
Not Artistically driven
Leisurely
Not Excitement-seeking
Loner

I think those are all of them, should cancel everything out, leaving only the easy to please "talking to god" to wind up Focused! all the time.

Naturally you can "earn" different values by arguing with people, and some of the needs are more fun to keep up with than others, while some are just impossible, family, friendship, romance, and weirdly enough good meals, though booze can be sated.

For some reason Goblins which are noeat/drink have a minimum on intemperance which is absurd, I'd remove that from the creature_standard myself, but it's up to you I suppose.

>>
>>125507832
>what's the alternative? a few z layers down?
yeah

lava splashes so if they drop a rock into it they'll dissolve into goo
>>
>>125504062
Damn, how couldn't I think of that

I know what I did wrong now, in a 5x5x10 square I channeled 8 downstairs inside the square (4 in each corner and 1 in the middle of each wall so I could smooth the walls) going up 10 z-layers, then I started mining the deepest room instead of channeling from the surface so instead of a deep hole I ended up with 10 rooms, I saw that something was not working right so while I was mining the rooms I also mixed up a bit of channeling, with a lot of open space between them because I designated all of them at the same time unlike in your video where you focus on channelling a full layer before going onto the next one

So when I figured out I had to channel instead of dig, I planned to do it from the top of the well to the bottom, and since there was nothing under most floors, a lot of cave-ins happened, gradually killing around 10 or 11 miners

After I finished channeling the reservoir and smoothed the well's walls, I wanted to remove the staircases, amd to speed up the process I designated the removal of both the stairs of the top and bottom of the well at the same time, the outcome was innaccessible stairs on the middle floor of the well, so I had to make a tunnel to reach them (breaking the well's walls) then I forgot that there was nothing under these stairs so when the dwarves removed them they fell down to the bottom of the well, some survived the impact but many died, they were the other half, making a total of 21 victims

Then I gave up and after burying them I just filled the well with the stairs still there
>>
>>125508054
It took me a long time to learn what I showed you.

If I wanted to make this myself and not make the fastest possible video, I would have smoothed each layer before progressing. I also would have nixed the stairs and just added an exit at the very bottom that would be walled off after.

Happy forting.
>>
>>125505598
Watch animals for early warning. Chain them around the outskirts of the map. Have a couple of military dwarves early, embark with one or two if you can. If not, draft a couple from your first migrant wave. Make sure they're fully armored and have been training a while by the time the first caravan leaves. When one of your animals sees the werebeast, issue a kill order. You'll never have werebeast problems again if you follow this advice.
>>
>>125508339
Happy forting too, and thanks for taking your time to teach me
>>
>>125508491
Okay but let's assume I am on an embark with crap metals. Is copper good enough to stop the bite? It takes a few trade caravans or sieges to start building a steel military if you don't have magnetite.

Well, the good news is: if you add a reaction and add skulls and all that jazz so you can MAKE, say... a human skull mug, you can in fact fill it up and pass it to someone, and assuming they don't stuff it in a money pouch (???) and sit there with it for some reason, they'll chug it all day long.

200 booze

Anvil
4 Peahens
a coke/charcoal
6 of a generic 3p-stone, I prefer Olivine or Pitchblende for their colors. These get turned into blocks for or build straight into workshops and the smelter.

Then as much as I can afford of
Bit.Coal/Lignite + Casserite + Native Copper/Malachite (Tetraheadrite works too, but costs more)

Each Cass and Copper ore nets you 8 Bronze bars per coke.

Copper will probably stop most bites, but it's not a guarantee. If your dwarves have been training since the first summer, though, there's a good chance they'll block/dodge/parry most or all of its attacks, and will be able to disable it before it has many attack opportunities.
I also do what the other anon suggested, and spend spare embark points on bronze fixins and bituminous coal. If you can't work it out to manage that, then you can be cheesy and buy armor with prepared meals or wooden trap components.

It doesn't matter.

It'll make things harder for you in the long run because the wiki won't use your special tileset. But if it makes the game easier to read for you then go ahead, play around with them and pick the one you think looks best.

ACSII is the best for reading the game though.

literally makes no difference as long as your tileset is sharp and clear. ASCII has a benefit over some of the tilesets that try to be too detailed and lead to things looking cluttered and messy, but with a good tileset you're getting an objectively better experience

No it doesn't. It's a seperate window with no UI for controlling DF. You can't even pause or unpause. You can't use any menus. You can queue up any workshop orders or or issue your military commands or see the status of any creature or object. All of that has to be done in the DF window, using the DF UI, looking at whatever tileset you have installed. Stonesense is literally only a visualizer.

>>
>>125541273
You might want to let him conduct research in your fort, and squeeze as much cool books as possible out of him. When he tries to leave, you can have him killed so that he can't take any of the books with him.

Since he's lived for a long time, he might know a lot of topics to write about.

The guy REALLY, REALLY wants in my fort. Im far too paranoid of vampires since my first encounter with them ever ended up with one draining one of my best legendary dwarves. Also he keeps running to the edge of the map, then going, pretty much, "Eh, they don't see me anymore. OFF TO THE LIBRARY!"
>>
>>125542219
Its a vampire guest, pretty sure they don't eat drink or sleep.

Can't be too careful. He's dead now. Killed in the tavern. Blood everywhere.

dude you are such a bitch. you see an opportunity to pop out cool books and you kill the dorf out of fear. are you american?
>>
>>125542853
Yeah, the fort just wasn't prepped for such a thing at the moment. He didnt come with any books either, sadly. Ive also yet to have any temporary scholars write any books here either.

So how do I add new creatures? Is it possible to add them to an existing world? I've done it before, I've just forgotten. Like I would know how to build a creature out of the tags, but I dunno how to gen a world that has them in it

This sounds amazing. Does it actually protect? Could I replicate it by slowly exposing my military to fire til all flesh/fat is gone then having them put into a special adamantine enhancement hospital?

How do I safely dig out a underground magma channel without my dwarves dying from it?
They can't seem to run fast enough to escape the magma flow.

Lost 2 miners this way.
>>
I have shitloads of iron ballista arrow heads in stockpiles, but my dwarves wont use them to assemble ballista arrows. What gives?
>>
so in my underground is a horde of demons
when i dig down and create a path for them they will come up right?
I want to make a small hallway so i can defeat them 1 by 1 with my soldiers like in 300

So what are your general thoughts on the update?

Also are there any game breaking crashes I should wait to get patched before downloading it?

Vampires were apparently killing too many people in old worlds, so toady added a way for civilian populations to retaliate and kill them if they preyed on too many of them.
>>
Why hasn't Toady implemented proper battle simulations yet? I'd consider it one of the most important things to add. I like worlds with long histories, but I can't do it since DF2014 because goblins always end up taking over the entire world. I feel like going back to 0.34.11, because Toady just adds irrelevant shit to the game instead of fixing the major issues.
>>
>>125554076
visitors and long terms residents are kinda lame
they do nothing but lower your fps
i guess the library is kinda cool because the dorfs learn some crap and the books are also interesting
music and dance generation is impressive
sieges and attack feel more constant, that's good on my book
>>
>>125554769
The goblins-take-over-everything issue has been fixed ages ago.
>>
>>125554937
No it hasn't, every world with long history still ends up with 500 000 goblins vs 20 000 dwarves.
>>
>>125485789
Done.
>>
>>125554076
I wish toddles had wasted this year improving performance and fixing bugs instead of adding so little.
>>
>>125554990
That's because gobbos live forever unlike the inferior dwarves with their limited lifespan.
>>
>>125554995
Thank you.

>>125554076
No crashes that you notice a lot any more, some bugs could be defined as "game breaking" by some people. all in all it's an improvement over 40.24 though and with sieges appearing to happen more often, 34.11 doesn't have anything over 42.xx either, in my opinion.

The new needs in connection with the revamped personality system are great (though as always there's some stuff to sort out and some balancing to be done).
The alcohol changes neutralize the issues with morality (all these horrified dwarves in 40.xx) with another extreme.

Libraries, taverns, and that stuff is fucking great. bards performing, poems being created procedurally and books having more use than just for necros is very entertaining in both modes.

And playing as animal people in adventure mode is an interesting challenge if you know what you're doing.

You can make 'zones' with [i]
Mark an area and set it for Garbage Dump. This works like a stockpile, but only for certain marked goods.

To mark for 'dumping' (= bring to any garbage zone), press [d][b][d] and designate an area. All items in that area are now marked and will be hauled by any dwarf with the Refuse Hauling labor.
Every item that is marked and hauled to the zone will get the 'forbidden' tag, meaning dwarves won't bother touching it (you can 'reclaim' with [d][b][c])

Another, more precise way of marking for dumping is by pressing [k] and hovering over the item and pressing [d].

Note that Garbage Dump zones aren't actually stockpiles and work somewhat differently. Notably: they can hold an endless supply of goods.
>>
>Have gold bars
>Can't build gold statues

What am I doing wrong? I have the metalcrafter labour enabled.
>>
>first fort that I have stuck with

>gets in

>>
>>125555430
Elves are immortal too, but they usually go extinct along with dwarves and humans. Also, as far as I know, this issue was never fixed, just marked as "resolved" because it's not really a bug.

how can I go inside my shell as a desert Turtle man?
>>
>>125555623
Do you have enough bars? Enough coal?
>>
>>125555623
Hard to say. Isolate the error by switching out components (workshop, goods, dwarf, labors, stockpiles, location).
And double check everything with the wiki. Are statues really made with the metalcrafting labor, can they really be made from gold, etc.

I haven't even touched poetry and instruments yet, just been seeing all the different dances, figuring out how to get different races to build libraries, going through the ridiculous lengths of making a couple of different race/civ dancers just to trek to a library and write down their moves so I can play an outsider (the only elf in the world) with sick dance moves.

Needs are a fascinating little bit of roleplay/minmax crunchiness, you can get rid of them entirely if you want, or play into them and try to satisfy all the shit your adventurer wants/needs/likes to do.

I mean holy shit, your adventurer actually likes to do certain shit!

You can actually see what you look like/are like personality-wise beforehand and play around until you find something you're happy with, and hey, if you find a need that you didn't actually like dealing with?

Well, arguments are fun, and funny as hell, and you can concede and change your values... at least until you get too good to find anyone who isn't instantly convinced of anything you say.

Earlier I danced with a dragon (yes, I modded them to have [POWER] and take over sites and shit, but usually they just murderfuck everyone, so it's mostly for variety/comedy, never expected to actually interact with one) and convinced her of the value of merriment and harmony... still wouldn't make me an official performer though.

I hear there is a lot of this shit that carries over to fort mode too!
>>
>>125556049

I could have but I thought she was being so friendly that I could bring some goblins to get a better dance party going, but the ones that were scared of her triggered the "RAWR I MUST BURN AND REND EVERYONE" part of her AI apparently.

Later I'm gonna take the skull goblets I made from this hydra and fill them with vampire blood/booze (guy jumped me, dick move brah) and see if I can get people to drink it.
