Say I have a terrain shader with some textures and I have a per vertex weight for for each.

But in a lot of instances this weight is 1 for 1-2 of these textures and 0 for others. Is the shader smart enough to avoid lookups if it has something like weight * textur2D(blablup, xy) when weight is 0 or do I need to prevent this somehow?

I have some performance issues on things with this shader (ie the terrain) when playing my game on my phone

To answer my own question: No its not smart enough. Is there some kind of bit trick to avoid calculation y in x * y if x is 0?
I am currently doing a simple if (x > 0.0) check but I was told I should avoid if statements in fragment shaders.

I can almost guarantee that doing the texture lookup inside the branch will be slower than just doing the texture lookup. What you need to do is somehow predicate WHICH texture you sample. So use a texture array, and have each vertex have N weights and N indices.

+ it runs well
+ nice music
+ feels nice, being hit feels really powerful
- bad audio effects for some stuff like that machine gun thing and the radio static type sound
- no tutorial, player has to guess what to do and even why to do it

MAJOR demo-related progress today:

Visual options!

We now support a full array of visual options, which is a super-necessary step for releasing a demo since I know some of you guys are playing on toasters.

We support general settings (fullscreen, gamma, etc), allow you to adjust the camera follow distance for normal mode, gun mode, and 2D mode, have a number of scalability settings (draw distance, antialiasing quality, etc., all on a scale from Low to Cuhrayzee, as well as disabling motion blur and bloom, and and over/undersampling slider)

In addition, there are a number of interface settings. You can scale the HUD, disable the various elements, scale the aiming reticle separately, disable pop-up hints and, by popular demand, disable Comic FX (the word-bubble effects that player actions sometimes trigger).

Known issues right now:
- You cannot set the native resolution properly. This is trivial to support but I still need to make a two-field resolution entry box for the menu itself.
- Currently, visual settings and control schema are tied. This is normally not a big deal but if you try to use a control config save, it will carry the visual options with it. I can fix this but it will take some fiddling.
- The gamma setting has no suggestion-slider function for correct placement (i.e. "adjust the slider until the icon is JUST visible")
- Currently I don't have a delayed "Keep these settings?" box, seems like there must be some reason all games include it.

Hello there, I wanted to ask for some advice regarding a certain topic.

I wanted to create a small little game about girls and our relationship with clothes as I make documentary films revolving around this theme. I had this idea for a little free dress up style game where you are presented with an illustration of a little naked person who is very lightly animated. Surrounding this person are these cut outs of clothes that slowly glide and bounce around the screen, and when you click and drag them onto the person, audio plays from various women like in my films, talking about how certain clothes make them feel. Drag the maxi dress onto her and audio will play of a person talking about why they like to wear a maxi dress, blah blah blah. They will be lightly animated to do a pose, maybe smile. You get it.

I was wondering what kind of software I would use to create this little thing, thank you.

Whatever the case, it looks like your weapon is too small when spinning there, and the animation is too long.

I don't know exactly what's going on there, but perhaps a distinct getting-ready hold and then a super quick spin/single slash would look better (though I guess the latter more appropriate for a sword).

I both like and hate the cookie clicker route. It makes for really addictive games but amassing resources to push the same button faster gets old really quick.

And I can say that after sifting through the app store on this Ipad I got as a gift, downloading, playing for a day and then deleting dozens of incremental games like that with no other purpose than you coming back after a few hours and pressing 5 buttons.

If you make a 2D rpg first, you're probaly going to use a simpler engine instead of unity and unreal.
Unity and unreal are amazing, yeah, but once you're good with them you're good at making an unreal/unity game. not a game in general.

So, if you go 2d with a simple 2d engine, you'll focus on learning how to code stuff yourself. After you're done, and once you go 3d, you only need to learn the 3d stuff, cos you aqlready know how games work, how an rpg works, and how to make it

Let's say I have object_a create an instance of object_b stored in a variable as follows:

obj=instance_create(x,y,object_b);

I'm aware that the with function is used to call instance_destroy(); in other objects, but is there any way to let object_a destroy ONLY the instances of object_b that it created (i.e. only destroy instances of obj), and not other instances of object_b? (I'm making a shooter and I want certain bullets to go away when the ship that shot them dies)

with(object_b) {instance_destroy();} causes all of the instances of object_b to disappear (which I don't want if multiple copies of the same enemy are on screen), but game maker doesn't recognize with(obj){instance_destroy();} as valid.

is there a better way to make this work then having hundreds of identical bullet objects to use for each individual ship?

you CAN store objects created in a variable and destroy them, but only one object at a time. wouldn't work for what you're asking.

you need to add each bullet shot to a ds_list and then cycle through the ds_list and instance_destroy everything in the ds_list upon death.

here's the controls description I just put on the ludum dare page:
CONTROLS:
Z: Descend left / Confirm selection
C: Descend Right / Cycle selection

The game mechanic is centered around a binary tree, meaning at each branch (starting at the main trunk) you can choose to travel either left(Z) or right(C).
If you travel into an empty space you will be prompted to choose a new branch (in gray) for that node, using C to cycle through them and Z to confirm. Once you have confirmed you will return to the root.
If you travel into a terminal node (leaf, thorn, twig) then pressing Z will return you to the root.

The hands will randomly target a leaf on the tree and reach down and try to pluck it. If the hand hits a thorn on its way to pluck the leaf, the thorn will fall off and the hand will retreat. If it reaches the leaf, however, it will pluck it and leave behind a twig which cannot be removed or built on.

The goal is to grow as many leaves as you can before the hands pluck all of them! Good luck!

Game is looking good. Some feedback about the KS page:

- The video still image is lame. The car looks lame, not like the cars in the game at all. The system icons in the corner make me think of some gay weird open source thing, not something fun. The image at about 1:44 in the video would make a better video still.

- Writing is awkward. "Racing game inspired by the games, the music and the cars from the late 80s and early 90s." See how weird it is to say "racing game inspired by the games". Also, late 80s and early 90s is too specific. Just say 90s. Ur market is not people who played games in the 80s.

- "It's built on a custom game engine" No one cares! Talk about the experience of playing, not weird nerdy shit that is not relevant to the player

- "authentic retro feel " for my taste, pushing the retro rhetoric too much is no good. Let the visuals do the talking there, they do a fine job on their own. When you go on about retro it seems a little desperate.

- "unique graphics" the looks is clearly an homage to previous games, so saying this is kind of bullshit. Feels like corporate copywriting.

- "result is a challenging and exciting experience." feels a bit too much like copywriting again. just explain what the game is, dont start telling people what kind of experience theyre going to be having. Youre not some pitchman, you need to let the video of the game do the talking

I'm pretty happy with how it looks up till now.

It's a game about drilling ice. The ice points you obtain will let you learn new drilling techniques such as drill barrier, drill rain, homing drill, drill sommon, drill metamorphosis, oh and there's gonna be enemies that spawn stronger the longer the game goes on.

It's about surviving the enemies that will attack you. You need xp to learn a few random tricks to deal with them. Eventually you'll hit level max and know every techniques. That's when the boss monsters will attack you. I'm kinda coming up with it all as I go, but the more I progress the clearer is the idea I'm getting of the final game. There'll be an hint of Megaman as some enemies are weaker/can be disabled by certain techniques, and where you'll have to remember some attack patterns.

I've played a lot of spelunky lately so I've thought of giving the player 4hp for the entire game.

I just realized this method is completed underrated. 3D models to animated sprites. I'm a huge fan of Dungeon Keeper 1 and Abe's Oddworld's graphics. I think they're both top notch in atmosphere, along with Diablo 2.

I also happen to think Donkey Kong Country 2 looks amazing. I know there are those who thinks it looks garbage...

A bit of progress on a jam game I'm working on. I'm not really feeling this project though, having a hard time balancing it all out. I think I want to do a platformer instead.

There's four enemy types, people that rush you, people that shoot you, mines and snipers, which are really just moving mines. I haven't started yet, but I intend to add frightened children running around, who'll need saving, like the family from Robotron.

I 3d scanned a wall and then baked the normals onto a flat plane, along with occlusion and diffuse.

Most often people just take the diffuse map of a photo and use some processing to make a depth map from it, which is rarely accurate. This one is perfectly accurate.

Depends if it's throw or drop. I guess for an actual throw i'd disable spell casting while holding an item. tapping lmb would drop it, holding lmb would charge it up and then throw on release. Then lmb again would cast spell as usual.

Because sculpting is monotone as fuck.

I already know some unwrapping and remeshing but I'm not the greatest artist at sculpting.

Scanning provides organic results that you could never really get from creating something by hand, now if only i could use scans to create modular/tileable environments.
The problem so far is that all the things i scan are kinda hard to use in a scene.

Not necessarily DnD ones (featherfall was just an easy test for the system and pretty useful for broomflying) but yeah, lots of different spells. I've got a tentative list of ~25 that I'm pretty sure I like, but I've got more than enough input space for the rest.

I think I might have item holding blocking casting but have a button for "tucking away" an item under your arm or whatever, so you can dive to grab something -> tuck it -> cast featherfall to save both of you. Or something like that, at least.

Yeah, if it was me i'd definitely disable casting while holding something, according to d&d rules, since the hand is usually for holding ingredients for the spell or waving your hands around.

Of course most d&d spells are way too scope to qualify for a game, especially since like 1/3 of them are roleplaying spells and another 1/3 affect "AI", which would be very hard to implement.

I did think about implementing a pocket dimension spell, it'd be a recreation of potal's mechanics.

Depends on the room and the voice. A good condensor micropohone in a somewhat neutral acoustic space should be enough for a low-budget indie game.
Good condensors are a bit pricey and harded to use though, so a dynamic might be more up your alley. If you want something that is a lot of bang for your buck, I'd recommend the Shure SM57 or 58 (Only difference is that 58 has a built in pop-filter, more of a live performance version.)
It's not the greatest thing ever, but it is versatile as fuck. Popular among both amateurs and proffesionals.

VoIP headset/desktop microphones is a big no-no. Also, remember pop-filters.
