The Avar Tribesmen are such a fantastic unit. I mean, they can out-skirmish dedicated archers, they can outfight tier 1 infantry or hold their own against tier 2 infantry, AND they can do it with minimal casualties thanks to their ridiculous amounts of armor. My general strategy has been to use a group of levy spears in shield-wall as the base of my formation, then to form my tribesmen in blocks on their flanks. When the enemy advances, my tribesmen fill them with arrows, my spears advance to fix them, and then the tribesmen move around the enemy's flanks to fire into the rear of their formation, followed by a charge with their spears. I've annihilated the Lombards with this.

To the other Asturias players - what kind of template do you use for your armies?

I'm running 4 armored swordsmen, 4 spearmen, 4 ambushers, 6 cav, and an onager. Swordsmen for a good central anvil and for assaulting cities, spearmen for spearwall-capable units to break cav charges along my flanks, and ambushers for that initial skirmisher volley without being totally fucking useless once their ammo runs out.

I've found that longbowmen also work pretty well, since they do a little more damage and have the added advantage of having significantly greater range than either crossbows or horse archers. Plus, they've got lower upkeep than crossbowmen, if memory serves.

Do remember that it is two tribes fighting as one at the start of the campaign. So that is two armies per faction which is somewhat understandable. I always play the battles unless its an easy siege of some nowhere settlement. Though I cannot stand the fact that units route way too fast. Its my biggest problem with Attila, moral is a crap shoot for even elite units. But it appears most people like it this way, I don't understand why people want units to lose like 30 guys, run away, and then reform. Id rather have them stay stuck in until they get down to 30 guys and then route.

Maybe its just my personal experience, but units route way way to fast for me to properly enjoy Atilla. Which is a shame because I do want to enjoy it.

Age of Charlemagne is closer to Rise of the Samurai. More condensed, less unit variety and the units themselves are weaker than their base game counterparts.

Don't know what to think of it yet. The early game is peasants fighting peasants so maybe it will get better as I unlock more unit upgrades.

Pretty underwhelmed with the kingdom mechanics. The bonuses you get are the same regardless of faction. Would have been nice to unlock some new faction specific units once you unite your kingdom.
