Ah, so now we went from "rapier is the best starting weapon damage wise" to "uh, quarterstaff is good but it's not actually good". Okay. Except not okay. You can't really rely on getting a pre-temple upgrade even when using maces and flails, and quarterstaff is the best weapon out of the ones you can start with. So, if you care about winrate, it's a good choice. If you care about turncount, you'll probably take axes because muh cleave. If you don't care about both you just pick whichever you think is cooler and none of the above matters to you.

So stop pretending that quarterstaff is a bad choice. It's a fine choice, and it's the best choice from the early game survivability perspective.

Is this good enough that leveling Slings would be wise? I'm a MuFE, and haven't put any EXP into non-magic skills so far. I haven't memorized my entire starting book yet, but everything is <10% chance of failure excepting Sticky Flame (17%) and Fireball (45%). Even with 0 skill in Slings, this is extremely effective (takes down orcs in two turns, and ogres in 3-5), but I'd like to take it to at least 1 aut per attack, instead of the 1.2 it currently is.
The alternative is a staff of power I've found.
