The buttons block the blue spike blocks, so do the 2 short ones on the outside you can touch and dive out of, then do the inner one, which will turn them off before you take damage.

I had an amazing Lost build and was ready to fuck Mega Satan but picked up fruitcake on my huge +damage, Polyphemus+ Proptosis +lump of coal run and I went into a room with 3 Dingles, I JUST FUCKING HAPPENED TO GET EXPLOSIVO out of all the other options, The tear literally covered the entire screen, couldn't see anything, and got charged to death
Wretched item I won't be picking up again for a long time.

For the longest time, I just had Jera and Perthro unlocked (this was before I got the D6 so it was handier back then). I'd say that's an even better state to be in, and maybe Algiz if you're having trouble with The Lost. For completion's sake I've been going back and doing all the challenges so my glory days are coming to a close, but I'm definitely saving the less useful runes for last.

On a side note, how the fuck am I supposed to do Family Man? Do I hold R until a curse room gives me Incubus or what? I really can't think of any one item to reset for that could make that run any less hell.

I just don't enjoy it.
By the time I'm capable of reaching Ultra Greed I'm usually stupidly overpowered, and if I'm not when I reach Hush, I just don't fight him.
But slogging through these long-ass grindy fights are speed bumps in what's otherwise a really fun playthrough, and it feels like a waste of all the neat items I've got.

Slamming megasatan into the ground is fun when you have tough runs to compare it to, but there are no highs for the lows of Ultra Greed/Hush to contrast with. They're all lows.

health scaling is a tool that should be used to soften the punishment for having low damage not to arbitrarily lower the bonuses conveyed by an increased damage stat; it subverts the entire purpose of a damage stat in the first place if the fight is always going to take ~5 minutes unless you have an additional source of damage the game cant scale for like the shears or bumbo

Number Two was one of the first Afterbirth items I found and it nearly made me uninstall the fucking game when I died to it. As if Edmund's Freudian obsession with all things fecal wasn't enough to make me hate the item, I'm not fond of spawning dangerous things under me that I can't control. As if infinite bombs were even remotely useful - I never need more than eight or so per run, max - I'd much rather have a Fetus item or just fucking Pyro.

explosive diarrhea -is- a good pill when you know it's explosive diarrhea, since then it's a free 5 or so bombs (which can fucking wreck some bosses, and most enemies)
since it's a pill, this also means that it's easy to control: you pop it whenever you want, and drop it if you don't want it. since it's got some actual situational use, this means that it can be worth keeping around and using
as opposed to paralysis, for example - you never really want to be frozen in place and defenseless for a few seconds.

number 2 is shit since you don't really control when it happens, and 'just stop firing' isn't an option when you have any tech or charged item like brimstone, or in any boss fight (or any fight at all, really)
plus number 2 just offers another fucking distraction from the amount of shit that can happen on-screen already, as well as randomly adding a danger zone right on your position (which, again, is horrible for boss-fights, especially 'bullethells' like hush, isaac and ???)
