Obsidian is extremely honest about the flaws in their games and talk about that while Bethesda goes full denial and only praises, only say good things about their games as if they have no flaws.

He was a father and some gang assholes he got tied up with killed his daughter. He didn't want another parent to live with that hopelessness so he shoots your spouse, but he can't shoot you because the Institute told him you had to be saved as a backup in case something went wrong with Shaun. The fact that it's the player character he has to spare and not the one holding the baby is just convenient coincidence. This is explained pretty extensively, it's the whole point of the quest where you journey through Frosted Flakes' memories.

If you love the Post apoc, you should seemingly like the movie Series it is mostly based on. I can hardly think of much else that draws as much influence on the Series. Boy and His Dog is the only one that can be a close second.

I actually really liked KOTOR2, a bit more than 1, though only after the unofficial restoration patch thing, because that does a good job improving the experience. Overall, I think it's my personal favorite of the two, but KOTOR 1 was better in terms of having a finished fucking story. I just wish that Bioware hadn't turned the series into an MMO. Sure, I've heard SWTOR's individual class stories can be pretty good, but they could have done so much better with a singleplayer experience, I think.

Also, it really just gets to me that The Institute has the capability to do stuff like give Father a synth body, so they can live on, in a sense, but just doesn't I guess it all comes down to them not seeing these fully-functioning AIs as sentient. For a bunch of brilliant scientists, they sure have are kind of stupid, at least in terms of their goals and beliefs.
