I'm creating using my daily job income as budget. Yesterday I was making a sort of prediction on how much I'll spend on all sprites.
5 characters, some facial expressions, some objects... U$ 330,00.
Backgrounds: 40,00 each, and there are 13 of them.
My main problem now is music... I have no idea about it...

The winner for this season of excuses is being in a coma for two months despite posting on a fairly frequent basis on their social media.

The most common one is their grandmother dying. The leading cause of death in grandmothers has to be having an artist grandchild at this point. Almost never their grandfather however. It doesn't elicit the same emotional response.
>>
>>124201258
Very rarely do I get an e-mail when it happens saying there was a family emergency and they are going to be late on the commission. Most of the time it is a month after deadline and I'm asking what's going on that the grandmother suddenly died.

I think it's more that the project took so much of their time/lives and was almost like a magnum opus. Now it's probably a pretty steady commercial release vs a really amazing game.

It's probably worth $20. The sakura games and a slew of KN are currently sitting at around 10$.

tl;dr
>The other primary problem I have is so much of my work for BCM is a long way below my current standards and I hate that. Especially since it’s meant to be commercial. Honestly I don’t want to sell it, I feel bad offering this to people when I know it’s not my best, but so much time and work has gone into it, and I’m not the only one involved. Fixing it would only mean years more work, so there is really nothing I can do, but I hate it so much.

>>124231821
What the fuck, are they retarded? Why would they ever willingly admit that the game their working on is low quality to (potential) customers?
>>
>>124232305
I'd prefer they be honest about it than hype it up as something fantastic when it's shit.

It is suicide on their end though.
>>
>>124232450
Then why sell it for 20$ if they know it's shit and tell everyone it's shit? Just seems weird.
>>
>>124232305
>>124231821

That's the artist talking about their work. I honestly don't think there's anything wrong with what she said. She's just being honest and she's right, if she fixes it again she'll likely just improve yet again and be right back where she started.

There's devs knowingly putting out garbage flaming bags of shit for money and the BCM devs are not it.
>>
>>124233086
I don't care. If someone says to me they feel bad about selling something and really don't want to, then put a price on it anyway, that's a sign to me honor their wishes and not pay for it.
>>
>>124233086
>That's the artist talking about their work

Considering it's a visual novel, if the art is bad then the writing has to make up for it. Can you see the writing being worth $20?
>>
>>124233431
Isn't the writer a huge fan of Diabolik shit? And god was that a shitty game, it doesn't really bode well for a writers game when all they like is shitty writing from other shitty games themselves.

Human Exploitation Project here.

I'm adding a ship capacity/type/construction mechanic. Where if you're playing as a smuggler with a wooden boat as a starter, that ship would sink if you put more people in it than stated in the specs.

Might also add religion aspect to it, like if there are Christian refugees on the same ship with Muslims, the more likely they'll get thrown off.

The majority of people posting on this thread? No, because most of them have never finished a game other than maybe a tiny short free project anyway.

Some people? yes.

Plenty of japanese indies look like shit too.

If some guy asked why there were so many shitty BL vns, though, he was probably drunk or thinking about Japanese ones, barely any exist in the evn world so far.

I want to run a kickstarter, but since I'm the project lead and artist asking for money for the art seems wrong... W-would I have to hire another, more professional artist in order to look more professional? I don't want to pocket, say, the 50% of the Kickstarter money for myself. It looks unfair.
>>
>>124314006

See, thinking like this will almost guarantee you find yourself overwhelmed. Can you actually afford to provide the equivalent of 50% of the funds for free?

Just word it like "salaries" or something.
>>
>>124314006
Why do you need money for art if you're the artist? KS is for getting funds you need to make and finish your game. It's not something you do for the hell of it.

You're getting paid for your own time and can use the funds to better the game in a variety of other ways. It is an individual's own decision whether or not they decide to pledge. As long as you're transparent and honest, then nobody should blame you for having a kickstarter.

Honesty and making money don't often go hand in hand however.

I would say music is technically one of the least important things, because bland music still serves its purpose and I've never seen anyone say they wished a VN had better music unless it was total ear rape.

However, nice music is one of the things that can easily raise a 'good' game to a 'great' game.
>>
>>124409892
I always just assume that people mute the music and listen to their own stuff.

>>124411818
I turn the sound right down since spending so long with music/voices etc gives me headaches, but I still recognise how important music is to the experience when done right. >>
>>124414535
I'll usually play other osts from jvn. Shits a mile better then royalty free shit.
>>
I'd say music is unimportant for selling the VN and bringing in profit. This can of course change as evn become more competitive and people need to stand apart, but for now most people dont even research that you used free stock music versus someone who costs 200$ a minute.

I agree that it can only make a good VN better and shouldn't be totally ignored.
>>
>>124415634
Royalty free doesn't necessarily mean bad. Lots of jap doujin game use stock music too. For example, many people said they liked 100% OJ's OST, but it's mostly royalty free. I also liked the OST of Ballad of an Evening Butterfly and thought it was one of the highlights, but it turns out it was just stock music.

For a not-exactly-but-still-kind-of-related example, Giant Bomb uses royalty free stock music that people genuinely enjoy.

I've been out of the dev game for a little over a year and a half.

Anonymity is great for discussions. You can be brutally honest if necessary, and no repercussions (a.k.a. retaliation) whatsoever will follow. No need to measure words, no need to hide your agenda. You can if you want to, but you don't have to in order to stay a part of a discussion because your views are not standard.

Not really possible. Not all projects are even announced and most projects are stupid things by kids no one cares about, or never going to get past the concept stage, or it's impossible to tell whether they're still being worked on or not because lack of progress updates might mean dead or might mean hiatus or might mean quiet.

I mean, the chocolate cock game might be being worked on somewhere, how would we know?

Missing Star's forums are barren. You could try asking the devs, but it's not looking good. LD was officially put on indefinite hiatus months ago, and the group have released nothing since, so I'd assume they've gone under.

Memviv is dead as hell, which is a shame, judging from what I've seen of at least one of the writers.

Dischan squandered kickstarter money and imploded.

WiP did actually get a demo out, and seems to be progressing. They blog slowly now, but you can check the devs' twitters.

It turns into game of thrones in the sense that everyone acts like idiots for the sake of drama. Think "no way bullying the crown prince will come to bite our asses later haha".

The game is rather heavy in gender stuff too, which makes some of the LIs paths downright infuriating. The protag is for all purposes a genderqueer girl that passes as a man - one of the LIs is gay but you aren't told until pretty far down into his route, so you can't continue romancing him (making all your time put into him a waste).
>>
>>124495584
>The protag is for all purposes a genderqueer girl that passes as a man - one of the LIs is gay but you aren't told until pretty far down into his route, so you can't continue romancing him (making all your time put into him a waste).
I've always thought how in pretending to be the opposite gender storylines, having the LIs actually fall in love with you would be kind of a nightmare because it'd mean they're probably gay.
>>
>>124495584
The plot is also resolved through the most contrieved coincidence ever, but that's less the game's fault and more of a common fantasy trope.
>>
>>124495715
It makes sense for the characters, but as a player it's annoying because the reveal is only obvious on hindsight. And it's only that one LI, so it feels like a punishment for liking him.
>>
>>124494154
I loved Cupid, I actually went back to it as soon as I had a free moment. I still need to go through it a last time, I think, because there was a note saying that once I got all the endings the story of one of the characters was going to be peppered throughout the playthrough. I assume that might explain why I'm missing some of the CGs, even though I got all 4 endings and the bonus one and didn't play the cut-down version.

The one criticism I have for it is that one of the endings (1) is obtained in a very similar way to ending 2, save for a few choices - and you also need to have got ending 2 first. This didn't seem too intuitive to me: firstly, the numbering lead me to believe that ending 1 would be more likely to be obtainable right away rather than not and secondly even though you get hints at the end, I believed that these were pertaining only to the last few choices, while I had to balance the attitude of my character between two attitudes throughout the game.
Having to play it a 6th time to see all the bits for the player character's background doesn't seem like a great idea, either: you have to chase all the other endings (hidden one included) to have it available, so you might have played the VN 6+ times by the time you get to it. I'd have liked a special content separate from the rest, instead, so that I don't have to retread old stuff. Even with skipping, it's got to be a bit annoying.

On the other hand, the idea of controlling a character who's manipulative with the main character is quite interesting and the writing is quite good. It's in no way the usual "John did this, and that, and then that other thing, and then that other thing." sort of deal. There are descriptions when they help the story, not just so content can be padded. The characters also have their own voice and speak unusually for them at points when you'd expect them to break down or be in any way under duress.
>>
>>124496157
The art is pretty solid, too - the CGs more so than the sprites, I think. The artist didn't waste time trying to render the backgrounds in them just for the sake of it and instead used a fair few effects like gradients or blotches of colour to give a good atmosphere. I'm certainly going to take a bit from her because I think in some cases less is more and this is definitely the VN you want to reference for this, particularly if you're going for a darker atmosphere. There were quite a lot of CGs.
The characters' expressions are mostly spot on. The backgrounds are filtered photos in some cases and drawn in others. I thought these were probably the less appealing aspect of the VN visually, but I still quite appreciated the effort and the interiors look better than the exterior ones.

The UI seemed good to me, though I wish they didn't change the Auto Mode speed label with "Skip Speed", since Skip and Auto really aren't the same thing and this did confuse me at first. I really quite liked the graphics for each chapter title.
>>
>>124495715
>I've always thought how in pretending to be the opposite gender storylines, having the LIs actually fall in love with you would be kind of a nightmare because it'd mean they're probably gay.

Well, a lot of stories play with this sort of thing, that tension is part of the fun for people into the genre.

using "protagonist is girl disguised as guy" for the sake of example, you get:

- the predatory het female who is desperately trying to get the MC into bed and the MC is fending her off
- the sweet het female who falls in love with the MC, and the MC feels pretty bad about leading her on but can't figure out what to do (This character is more likely than the one above to turn out to actually be bi in the end.)
- you could do the same character type with a sweet openly gay guy, because it would play the same tropes of 'This person is into me and I feel bad because I'm misleading them and I don't want to break their heart and oops'
- the straight male character who feels inexplicably drawn to "him" and goes through massive angst about it because "I'm not gay!". The implication is that instinctively they somehow know you're a girl but don't know it consciously so it gives them hives
- The asshole straight male character who feels the same inexplicable attraction to a 'guy', decides it's the MC's fault, and wants to kill/shitbeat them for it. In the hands of a terrible writer, this plotline ends with the asshole discovering the MC is a girl, and then going "Oh, that's okay, then!" and becoming a love interest.
- The straight male best friend of the MC that she falls for, who has no interest in her at all because he thinks she's a he, and may become slightly uncomfortable if he picks up on the MC's interest. Usually becomes the main love interest after a shock gender reveal
- The lech who flirts with the MC when she's a 'guy', making her feel a little uncomfortable, and doesn't care at all when it turns out she's a she. .
>>
>>124496895
The biggest gender trainwreck I ever encountered was a story where two characters who are actually both straight females but passing themselves off as men (one by disguise, one by magic) end up getting interested in each other, because they've both dropped hints that they like men and don't know the other one isn't really. They get drunk and screw, and are then horrified and kill each other / themselves. (Which is sort of stupid, but the story was a horror story overall and everyone was a bit wound up and crazy.)
>>
>>124496895
There's no tension at all for people familiar with the genre because nine times out of ten if they're a love interest, you're going to end up with them.

I didn't even notice the backgrounds. I haven't played this but I like the art style though, a lot. Now I'm going to have to check it out.
>>
>>124497369
That's like saying that there's no tension at all in any dramatic element in a VN ever, because nine times out of ten your love interest won't actually die and a happy end is possible.
>>
>>124499005
That's also true.
>>
>>124499346
It's technically true from one standpoint but meaningless from another. You don't go into Hollywood movies expecting that the hero will actually die and all his efforts will be in vain (in most genres), but you play along with the story and get caught up in the dramatic moments where bad things MIGHT happen, even if you know they probably won't.

>>124499005

>>124543043

That's what writers are for.
>>
>>124543270
Not really. There's tons of kids just making evn's for fun and don't really care about quality. You think AJ Tilley gives a shit about quality?
>>
>>124543631
Not even he would openly say "I don't care about the game". No dev would. It is just such a worthless statement.
>>
>>124543043

lmao, when did I say anything about other devs? It's entirely possible for a game to not meet your OWN standards. From day one I said that the game started as a self-indulgent project, so I wouldn't deliver something that I wouldn't play myself.

For example, if I suddenly got fed up with the game and decided to just wrap it up and release it to be done with it, I would consider it to be half-assed.

>>
>>124544134
Self-crticism isn't a bad thing. People are always changing. You should be able to look back on your game and say "Yeah, I would have done that differently" or "Maybe I should have done this instead."

Acknowledging your work isn't perfect is the first step to improving.
>>
>>124544392
Why so salty? Not that anon, but it is a pretty vapid thing to say.

>>
>>124544849
Apparently the concept of multitasking is foreign to you. That's okay, you'll learn one day.

>>124545068
Acknowledging your work isn't perfect and correcting it is an important thing. Doing that in public is a good way to get critics who will never forget it.
>>
>>124545068
There's a difference between self criticism and flat out saying "I don't want to charge people money for this" and then doing it anyway.
>>
>>124545324
The longer you work on your game the more flaws you will see by the time it is finished. You have to be incredibly blinded by your own life to think your game is perfect when you release it.

There is nothing wrong with releasing a game you think isn't perfect.

It's poor advertising to publicly admit the failings before the game's even out though.
>>
>>124543498
What's funny is that
>I'm not delivering a half-assed game
is what every half-assed amateur dev says before they actually make a game. Unfortunately, It's also a classic sign the dev doesn't know what they're doing.
>>
Then don't buy it...

Fuck people are paying 10$ for ajtilley games and time tenshi.
>>
>>124546235
Dude fuck off, they're charging money for a game that they admit isn't worth the money. This isn't only about bad business, it's just a dumb and shitty thing to do, especially to their fans/people who may have been looking forward to the game.
>>
>>124546235
There is everything wrong with selling people a game you admit is not worth their money.
>>
>>124546460
AJTilley and the like are basically retards who are lucky enough to have money to commission the assets and writing for the games they want to make. They don't realize they're shit and appeal to the lowest common denominator because they're of the same mindset. Kinda like subpar furry artists who charge a pretty penny for a commission.

Now, realizing you're shit, saying you're shit, apologizing that you're shit and then putting a price tag on your game is a whole different story.
>>
>>124547141
>Now, realizing you're shit, saying you're shit, apologizing that you're shit and then putting a price tag on your game is a whole different story.

Isn't it more polite to be upfront about your weaknesses?

"I think this furry porn I have drawn is shit. I don't think it's worth money. But if you want to pay me for it, okay."

>>
>>124547689
No salt here, friend. It's an unwritten law of dev.
>>
>>124547468
Honestly? Depends on who said it was shit and how and what I know about them.

There's a famous british company in the past that absolutely nosedived, whole company bankrupt in very little time, because their CEO was caught on camera saying their products were shit and their customers were stupid.

If a clothing store manager hands me an off-the-rack shirt and says "It's shit, it'll fall apart" then no, I won't buy it.

If a creative type hedges nervously and says "Oh, god, don't watch that movie I starred in, it's awful" I will likely disregard that as them being insecure, fishing for compliments, or not necessarily having the same taste I do. I'll make up my own mind.
>>
>>124547983
Absolutely not. It is offputting to hear a dev say they know it's bad, feel bad about charging and do not want to sell it, but ask for money anyway. It's completely disingenuous and honestly kind of disgusting.

Spending five years in development, a team who were clearly passionate, throwing out work they weren't happy with, an internal feedback system which ensured (by and large) that only good work made it through, and being unafraid to tackle a difficult premise. Five free artists would have also been extremely handy.

Having an unbelievably good director and one enormously talented writer also took it from being okay to very good.

I understand why there's backlash toward a lot of the over-the-top wanking about how great KS was, but saying these aren't true is either ignorance or just hate for the sake of hate. Aura's writing is good, and not just by EVN standards. He has a grasp of symbolism, prose, and character which far outstrips any other writer on the scene that I've seen or worked with. Delta's direction was also creative, and frequently utilised the limited assets in ways most projects don't. Sure, large chunks of KS were mediocre, but to act as if there's nothing praise-worthy about it is silly.

Aura's writing is a large reason why I hated Rin's route. I found it to be filled with pretentious, pseudo-philosophical jargon that proved to me that no matter how well versed your vocabulary is, or how eloquently you try to formulate your sentences, it does not make you a good storyteller.
He drones on, meanders and plods his way through the route and has no idea how to make any of the characters or their relationships believable. Not to mention the complete lack of any sort of buildup, climax or meaning.

Personally, the way he writes just makes me cringe.

>>
>>124571464
You know, I've never really thought about it since we all usually reach for it, but what is the gap between JVN and EVN? It's obviously big, but how big and what encompasses it?
>>
>>124570945

That's interesting - I suppose that's a difference of opinion. I felt most of the philosophy was a relatively straightforward examination of why we make art and what art is. I guess one man's philosophy is another's pseudo-philosophy, so I can't fault you for that, but I'd be curious to hear which parts you thought stuck out.

I also thought the characters were quite believable - Hisao behaved with reasonable levels of frustration, Nomiya was trying to do what he thought was best without understanding why it was the wrong way to go about it, and Sae was pretty straightforward. Rin herself was the obvious outlier. I was personally willing to forgive that, but I suppose I can't deny that she wasn't particularly realistic. Regardless, based on her characterisation, I felt as though her actions were internally consistent.

I quite like the way he writes, but again, that's personal preference.

UAB was largely the work of one guy, had no outside funding, released for free and is one of the best EVNs. Budget isn't everything.
>>
>>124573380

Except "One of the best EVNs" isn't very impressive, because most EVNs are crippled by hideous art, incompetent writing, free music, and crude direction. Every so often, someone does manage to put out a good one, but that's in spite of the handicaps. We have no long term dedicated studios capable of releasing sequential good products, which would certainly be assisted with a budget.

However, an even bigger frustration for me was the nature of Hisao's and Rin's relationship. The plot, if you could call it that, was virtually non-existent, and the characters forced. Rin and Hisao felt mashed together simply because that's what the VN was supposed to do.
Hisao essentially boiled down to a creepy stalking asshole in his nonsensical pursuit of Rin, someone, if I remember correctly, he readily admits to not even knowing why he bothers with. He joins her art club just to give up on it shortly after, forces her into something she never wanted to do or was comfortable with, repeatedly encroaches her personal space despite her asking him for time alone so she can do what he pressured her into, sits back and watches her get torn to shreds when she quits and falls apart, and then ignores her for several weeks afterwards. Naturally this all culminates into them wanting nothing to do with each oth- wait no here comes a sopping wet Rin and they're shagging in his dorm room. Now that these two lovebirds have finally had sex, a few minutes later everything is suddenly right with the world and the route ends.

I felt Rin's route tried to pepper you with emotions, but at the cost of coherency and any sort of true meaning. Simply put, it appealed to the heart at the expense of the mind. I would've been able to look past Aura's style had it not been for any of that.

This post is interesting as it shows the growth that the vn industry has gone through from where it used to be. The industry was just where the EVN industry essentially was, but unlike the evn industry, they built themselves up through hard work. This allowed them to move on even without a large budget. Eventually, they just got so big that the money came rolling in if they were popular enough with the readers. That demonstrates that evn developers just need to be consistent in how they work and by showing what they're capable of, there should be a growth.
>>
>>124574274
I feel like people who use budget as a "solution", might be overshooting their ideas. If you can't do it within a reasonable funding, then the delays will roll in and your audience loses faith with each one. It's kind of why KS is frowned upon isn't it?
>>

The plot was quitey straightforward - it was both how they came to be a couple, and Rin's struggles with her art.

His giving up the art club was also straightforward - he wanted to try taking up a hobby, and also to understand Rin. But his heart was never really in it, and so, once she's gone, he has little reason to stay.

He bothers with her because he obviously has a crush on her. He's an idiot, but his actions make sense - he sees she's good at art, so thinks she should take the opportunity to be an artist (without taking the time to appreciate why she doesn't want to). He later wants to see her, so he does, even knowing she said not to. He feels he's getting mixed signals after she lets him finger her, but later tells him to go to hell. Basically, Hisao completely misunderstands Rin, and she can't communicate well enough to solve the misunderstanding. I agree Hisao's a moron, but he's eighteen, and inexperienced. His actions do make sense from his perspective.

I also disagree that it had no meaning - the route obviously centres on the theme of art and how it works as a metaphor for understanding humans. It also looks at the subject of change, symbolised by the dandlion field. It also did invite the readert to consider what art is and why we make it, and even has several characters offer different perspectives on the issue.

Again, I suppose we'll have to agree to disagree, but I think it's far more consistent and meaningful than you give it credit for.

The EVN "industry" is building itself up now - standards are exponentially higher than the were five years ago. I think EVNs are building themselves up too, and the number of EVNs now on Steam shows they are steadily moving into the mainstream. I think they'll get there eventually, bu there's a ways to go.

>>124574914

It isn't a solution to a proect being bad, but it will help your project be great. Your project will simply not look as good without very good artists, and the easiest way to get them is money. Most better musicians also charge, as do writers. You aren't guaranteed to have a good project just because you have money, but it helps.

>I feel like people who use budget as a "solution", might be overshooting their ideas.
Budget isn't a solution.
That's not what it means to say that budget is key to the massive gap between JVNs and EVNs.
Budget is relevant because on one side you have an actual fucking industry with people making a living, working on multiple projects, experience and tips being handed down, training from someone who knows what they're doing, not having to put your game on hold for five years while you focus on your Real Job, etc, etc, etc.

Of course it's possible for a wunderkind to make a great game on their own. It's just not likely, and one person succeeding on their own does nothing to improve the overall state of the 'scene'.

By my standards, it depends on how prominent those elements are. You might be wandering into adventure game territory, you might be clearly at a hybrid level that would be 'adventure' in Japan but not quite in the West, or you might have put some cosmetic silliness on top of a VN.
>>
>>124575178

Ultimately, "VN" is a pretty arbitrary term. No doubt it'll continue to evolve.
>>
>>124576290
VN is just as broad as the term video games is nowadays.
>>
>>124576290
It's really not. The only reason people are confused is because they haven't actually played many. Like that guy earlier who was baffled at the thought of a dialogue only VN.

My point still stands that Hisao gave up on everything, especially when Rin needed him the most and that that should not have led to them completely randomly having sex, after not even seeing or talking to each other for weeks, and Rin confessing her love afterwards. Whether or not he found his actions to make sense from his point of view has no bearing on the real nature of their relationship. He constantly imposed himself upon her for no reason aside from the player clicking the choices that lead to that outcome before giving up on her when she fell apart and would have needed his support most. You call it a crush, but from my end he was simply being selfish, forceful, and creepy, in part to him having no discernible reason for his feelings and openly admitting he doesn't know why he bothers. Even if his feelings were genuine, he had no respect for Rin or what she did and she had absolutely no reason to give a damn about him considering what he was constantly putting her through.

As for Rin herself and the whole meaning of art, I felt like a lot of that was just Aura prattling on. Maybe the deeper meaning was lost on me, or maybe it wasn't, but it didn't stand out enough for me to remember.
>>
Do you guys just use renpy's language or actually use python?
>>
>>124577086

I thought it was pretty clear they each had crushes on each other. They had their big fight, reconciled more or less, didn't see each other for a time afterwards, during which they both clearly got themselves sorted out, then they slept together.

He never openly says "I have a crush on this girl" but it's clear that he does. The choice to get onto the route - "I just can't leave her alone" - makes that fairly clear. Her kissing him while high, and her line when she's finished painting ("I need you") make it clear she also has feelings for him.

It's also not that he had no respect for Rin, it's just that he failed to understand her - he thought she should paint because she was good at it and seemed to enjoy it, without considering whether it was the best thing for her. After seeing the state she was in while doing it, it's also not surprising that he wanted to stop by and keep tabs on her. The fact he asks her out at this point also makes his feelings for her quite obvious.

Ultimately, all writing can be summed up as "prattling on." I found it to be well thought out enough to be interesting. You may not have found so, but to say it isn't there, or that there's no theme is demonstratably wrong.
>>
>>124577387
Anyone who isn't using at least some python is either making a very simple game or shooting themselves in the foot
>>
>>124577595
You could say it's obvious they had a crush on each other. After all, they slept with each other and confessed. My issue is not necessarily that they said or did any of those things, but why. Considering how they both acted with each other a lot of the time, the romance between the two felt unbelievably awkward and forced to me. I would also still have to say how Hisao treated Rin was childish and disrespectful, regardless of his intentions or her lack of sense, but it doesn't appear we're going to be agreeing on either of our stances.

You missed what I meant by that sentence. I felt it was "Aura prattling on", not the story, not the characters, but him specifically. He failed to make me feel like any of that was coming from the characters or plot. Nothing about it felt natural to me, and thus it felt hollow and forgettable.

Honestly though, this is all coming from someone who read the VN eons ago right after it came out, so I'm hardly an expert at this point. I don't think either of us is going to get much of anything out of continuing and these posts are too long winded to be using as bumps.

I see where you're coming from, but honestly I didn't mind it so much to say something like >>124543043 .
I see it the same way as devs saying things like "NON CLICHE" "UNLIKE OTHER VNS..." or "HIGHER STANDARDS". They look like twats but their work will speak for itself afterwards anyway.
Take that one VN, Because We're Here. They tried so hard to be UNLIKE THE OTHER VNS and UNLIKE OTHER OTOMES, but it ended up being unfunny, cringey, and badly written just because they tried so hard to prove that one point.
So yeah, I think it's important to realize the difference between bad PR and making your VN based on how you want PR to view it.
>>
>>124604432
It still sounds pretty cringey to me. Different words, same sentiment. It's not something somebody who actually delivers ever says.
>>

>It's not something somebody who actually delivers ever says.

That's overstating. It's something that many people who actually deliver say and then feel slightly guilty about later (if they have any self-reflection) or swear that the NEXT time they really, really mean it (because of course the first one ended up kind of half-assed, and the next one probably will too)

Inevitably compromises will be made in order to get a product out the door.
>>
>>124605968
Yes, I did overstate. You are correct. Someone who says this can possibly deliver, but the point is, it WILL be half-assed.

Let's make this real simple: whenever someone compares their VNs to others in a pitch, comment or anything, it's the same as a girl saying "teehee im so unlike the other girls, unique and cool because I'm very vocal about liking things commonly associated with boys for the attention those boys give me in return for the often feigned interest".

Rule of thumb: people don't care what other products are like in comparison, they just want to hear about what yours sounds like.

Also, shoutout to the many unfitting, exagerated adjectives people use to describe their stuff. No, your chinese cartoon flipbook isn't "thought-provoking" or "earth-shattering" because you get to parrot your politics at strawmen portrayed as having no valid point whatsoever.

>I don't think anyone would not buy a game that looks great because of a lack of misplaced words.
This sentence is a bit tortured, but if I understand what you're trying to say

No one who is interested in your game is going to refuse to buy your game specifically because it doesn't make overblown advertising claims.

However, bullshit talking points lead to increased buzz, leads to more people finding out your game exists and being interested in buying it.

Yurirei somewhat accidentally picked up the media tagline of being the "first uncensored eroge on Steam", which got tons of people talking about the game beyond the circle of yuri fans who were already going to buy it anyway. And for that matter, even many yuri fans were suddenly a lot more excited about the game when they were told it was a breakthrough in uncensored eroge.
>>

>>
>>124612681
>If they claim to have a feature and don't, they get bad reviews and word spreads.

People routinely claim their game is the first X when it is not the first X and that claim gets repeated endlessly and no, it does not lead to bad reviews. Because the average player cannot TELL that this is not true.

It's quite different if you tell people your game does something it obvously doesn't do (Although you can get away with it for a long time in Early Access by promising that the feature will come later.) But if your claim is nebulous and cannot be disproven or requires work to disprove, it's a different story.
