If you get enough penguin matches stocked up to buy a unique combine, that means you get two combines for 50 stones.
You can stack up way more than enough matches plus buy more while you do them.
So 50 stones gets you enough gold to combine multiple uniques. That's a better deal than just buying a unique with 600.

My point is, at the later ranks, the margin of time it takes to rank up is a larger span of time, meaning you've had more time to invest in your team than the people you should theoretically be playing against.

No, the issue is that at high ranks you're still going to meet people who massively outclass you even if you've been playing efficiently. The buffs are there to make it so you stand a chance when those times happen and you dont get your streak cockblocked by a mega whale. The new buff system is specifically set up so that if you come across those stronger teams and whales you're garunteed to lose your streak instead of having a chance of actually continuing to farm gp.

You don't have to be new to be fucked over by rng. Even with colo and league, it's still hard to get enough dstones for even one legend.

Between rainbow teams and thunder teams, Jury is probably the most common cm I see next to Meta.
As for scariest, probably Lynia/Jury/Bell/Hilde, Bell/Jury/Cynthia/Hilde, or Lynia/Bell/Cynthia/Hilde.
Something to that effect. Either way, thunder is the scariest mid by a longshot.
