>1. I don’t want to play the NG+ version of the DLC, because that’s not the difficulty I played the whole rest of the game in.

>2. I don’t want to start a new game and grind for hours upon hours to get to a level where I can enjoy the DLC

>I don’t see why me playing the DLC I bought with the character I’ve made at the difficulty I’m accustomed to isn’t an option and, moreover, why that isn’t made explicitly clear in the PlayStation Store before purchasing the DLC.

She has hunter bone speed, and she empowers a blade with her blood (specifically a blade not meant for blood empowering). Is her moveset tied to the vilebloods?

If we had a proper timeline of events it'd be a much easier matter to settle. The city is named after the Pthumerian queen and I can't imagine the city being all that young so it's a hell of a lot of time to keep track of distant relatives across. It's just so much easier to link Maria and Cainhurst than it is Maria and Pthumeru, especially given all of the direct mentions of Cainhurst, the undead queen, the Chikage, etc..
>>
Dreams are different planes, or layers of reality. The Hunter's Nightmare is one layer where yharnam intersects, The game world is another, and the world you wake up in the submit to gehrman ending is the third, real layer. You're put under when you receive blood ministration, and wake up in dream-yharnam, where everything's gone haywire from the mensis ritual.

The reason the Good Hunter can't die is because dying in a dream just means waking up, but forgetting the dream. When you die, you wake up in the Hunter's dream, because it's within the hunter's dream that you enter dream yharnam. It's some E.A. Poe dream-within-a-dream shit.
This is why you lose your blood echoes. They're explicitly stated to be the memories, thoughts and feelings of the living that lingers in their blood after death. You lose them when you die because you 'forget' when you're forcefully sent to reawaken in the hunters dream. Submitting to death in the hunter's dream is how you finally wake up and return to the real world.

The whole game is a planar journey through collapsing meta-phenomenological realms of mind. You're compelled to stop the Mensis ritual because it's dangerously degenerating the boundaries between dream and reality. The ending deliberately leaves you wondering how much of what you experienced actually happened in real yharnam, because you can't be sure how much of it was exclusive to the dream.

>"Hunter weapon wielded by Lady Maria of the Astral Clocktower. A trick sword originated in the same country as the Cainhurst Chikage, only this sword feeds not off blood, but instead demands great dexterity. Lady Maria was fond of this aspect of the Rakuyo, as she frowned upon blood blades, despite being a distant relative 1 of the queen. One day, she abandoned her beloved Rakuyo, casting it into a dark well, when she could stomach it no longer."

The more I read it, the more I can see it. The chikage was referenced for its relation to the rakuyo and the example of a blade powered by blood. There is no literal (literal literal, mind you) way to read this as Maria disliking the cainhurst aspect.

Also undead versus undying was pretty damning.

I should look back over some things I take for granted about the lore, when it comes to /bbg/ assumptions are all over the shop.

The DLC is unlocked with the defeat of Vicar Amelia.
That means you can go Cleric Beast(optional) -> Gascoigne->buy 10k key-> Amelia OR Cleric Beast(optional) -> Gascoigne -> Blood-starved Beast -> Amelia

If you're rusty I'd recommend just taking the normal path through as well as hitting up Hemwick before the DLC so you at least have a +6 weapon.

The disdain for blood weapons implies a disdain for Cainhurst, anon.
If she's a distant relative of the queen, then she has royal blood
Royal blood, especially a relative of the vileblood line means strong bloodtinge (see: the noble scion starter class)
Therefore a disdain for blood blades means a disdain for using her royal, cainhurst blood in battle.

She's rejecting who she is and her affiliation with the cainhurst nobles by eschewing the natural gifts of her blood for a pure skill weapon.

You can read it as Maria disliking Cainhurst, or simply Maria disliking the fact that she's of Cainhurst lineage. Choosing to forge her destiny through hard work and ability rather than latent talent of a corrupt and sinister lineage - which, then, makes her involvement with the church and the research hall all the more ironic.

She's shooting with the Evelyn, uses a Blade specifically the opposite of what she despised that her peers are using. In fact, since we have no idea how the Vilebloods fight aside from Chikage and Evelyn and we know they powered up from the same forbidden blood that Queen Analise used to turn into an immortal undead queen trying to bear a child of blood aka Queen Yahrnam, we can assume that they have lesser powers like blood blades.

Too many people assume that anything blood is vileblood, when everything is about blood in bloodborne. All vilebloods did was steal a bit of blood that the church/burgerworth didn't like.

The disdain for blood weapons in no way implies a disdain for cainhurst. I can see why you'd think that. I'd think that. I did think that. They use the chikage as an example. But looking back at it, the chikage is there in the description for the rakuyo's sake. Not cainhurst's. They both originated from the same country. Maria frowns upon blood weapons. She'd likely frown upon the bloodletter.

Noble scion is not related to vileblood, at all. There is no real evidence for a vilebloods having more bloodtinge than someone else. Their weapons that are tinge-intensive, chikage and evelyn, are foreign made and not made specially for vilebloods.

>Noble scion is not related to vileblood, at all
Do you really believe this? The only bloodtinge group in the game is old royalty, of course Noble Scion is a reference to them. You really seem to be reaching for some of this.
Evelyn foreign made? Where do you get this from? The description states the Cainhurst style relies more on bloodtinge, so why wouldn't they have more bloodtinge than someone else?
>>
>>124036387
I didn't think so.
>>
>>124036376
Evelyn is not foreign made, and only the Chikage says it's imported. The Evelyn was a standard of the Cainhurst hunter, and the fact that it has an 18 bloodtinge requirement means that the knights, if nothing else, were much more bloodtinge-oriented than the workshop and church hunters.

But imported or not, the Chikage is the standard weapon of the Queen's royal guard. When all of the weapons used by the hunters and guards there are heavily dependent on bloodtinge scaling, we can assume that they were all bloodtinge builds.

Motherfucker lost his goddamn mind when him and his fellow coppers chased a beast to yharnam. After it slaughtered his compatriots and he finally killed it, he ate the entire body. Aside from how the blood altered his physical state, that probably mentally broke him beyond repair. He then turned to hunting since all his friends were gone and he had blood problems so figured he might as well kill beasts some more. He forms the league due to finding parasite inside people that turn them to beasts, perhaps because he ate one he got a very up close understanding of their anatomy. The church don't give a fuck about wolves so they wouldn't care, it sort of makes sense they were always there and Valtr just knows how to get to them. And possibly due to the rune he created to grant the ability to see them.

However going by the description itself, perhaps they were never there. He's just batshit and that rune grants you the idea of vermin existing and your ability to REMOVE them. Either way, you prove to be an admirable confederate and able to handle the league. He leaves his bucket as thanks and a sign of you carrying on the League. Then he drifts to the Hunter's nightmare. So basically he might have never been able to see them, or he became so corrupt himself he couldn't tell the difference and just liked the taste of beast.

Boy this game sure has such wonderful "allies"

The key thing is that the Vilebloods used FORBIDDEN blood and were only referred to as vileblood in the Corruption Rune and Chikage. Corruption Rune says that vileblood, not Cainhurst Knights, hunted for Blood dregs in other hunters for Queen Analise so we can presume it only Queen Analise became Undead only after taking in Forbidden blood.

Also, Old Hunter Yanamura who is also using Chikage (Chikage Yanamura is an unknown person credited in the credits so we can assume he's someone special to the bloodborne team) NEVER uses Bloodmode, presumably because can't.

>Maria frowns upon blood weapons.
She frowns on blood weapons because she dislikes using her own blood, anon. Her own NOBLE blood related to a QUEEN with special blood. It's not a disdain specifically for blood weapons, it;s a disdain for her blood, her lineage. It has nothing to do with the Chikage. She doesn't like relying on the blood that connects her to her origins as a source of strength, which is a pretty clear disdain for those origins. The line about the queen implies Annalise, because she's the big, hot Queen character in the game that happens to have special superblood and command an order of knights that exclusively use blood blades. Considering Maria has actual, literal blood powers and coats her non-blood blade in blood to power it up, it's pretty clear which queen with special superblood she's supposed to be a relative of.

Also, point of fact: Maria uses an Evelyn. You can tell because it has a firing animation entirely unique to it, where you hold it sideways when you shoot.

>Claiming that noble scion=vileblood
Nobody ever said that. Is this intentional staw-manning? The point about noble scion is that the class explanation mentions one's pedigree, making the clear implication that innate bloodtinge is lineal (which really should be intuitive since we literally call your familial heritage your 'bloodline' in the first place). People with powerful bloodtinge tend to be nobility, and there's not a whole lot of nobility in the game that we encounter, but the few that we do corroborate this entirely.

Bloodtinge is normally hereditary, which is why Maria, as a relative of some Queen, can coat her weapons, which aren't inherently blood weapons, in blood and use it to strengthen them. It's also why she can make her blood burst into flames and all the other shit she does in the fight.

They're just cosmic parasites. Kos had alien parasites, the old blood has alien parasites. They induce beasthood because they live in and feed on blood, and so gradually reshape their host as they grow in power into a form more efficient at bloodletting, and drive them mad with bloodlust to better feed them. The vermin are in the old blood and likely from whichever great one gave mankind the old blood.

The only thing I think is worse than Dark Souls PVP is how you an only invade most areas if someone has rang either the Beckoning Bell or the Small Sinister Bell, meaning they are either summoning a phantom, or actually want to duel. Either of those is not in the spirit of working through an area back to your blood echoes by yourself, then getting invaded and having to reluctantly duel him to pick them back up. This also means that invaders have less fun invading people who don't want to duel, and don't have phantoms.

>>124040104
There were hints of beasthood having something to do with parasites in the base game. Silverbeasts barfing gross worms at you and headless Bloodletting beast being alive without a head (and eventually revealed to be controlled by a worm) all point to this. Vermin would be these worms.

It's interesting that they use the word "filth" in its description, though. Back in those days, filth meant poop, which is also where you'd normally find worms. What strikes me as odd though is that the silverbeasts are all hollowed out on the inside and even have their ribs sticking out, and how darkbeasts are just bones that don't have any room for worms. I guess in the former case you could say the vermin got too huge and cored out the host and are at the point where they're looking to infect something new, but how the fuck is a darkbeast supposed to be moving when it's just bones?
>>
>>124040391
That's a good point anon. I'm no lore expert but that's what I surmised from the DLC content. Didn't they mention something about 'ashen blood' in loran or something like that? could be two completely different things. maybe loran fucked around with a great one and got cursed too. Or I'm wrong, who knows?
>>124040431
I figured it was the vermin attaching themselves to the mind of the host (seemed to be what was happening with iosfeka) and making hunters to go mad with bloodlust

I also may be completely wrong.
>>
>>124040104
Vermin can be gained by beating non-beast bosses, so there is that.

Vermin are a manifestation of the mind, to allow the witness some form of relief against the threat to their sanity. By imagining the corruption in the blood in this form, it gives them the capacity to 'crush' it, even though this, in effect, achieves nothing.

It is a lie, meant to encourage cooperation in hunting beasts.

I kinda like the idea that the bug in HBLB is a gigantic vermin though

The invasion system is trash and the fact that the game makes spamming healing so easy to do for both sides, combined with damage being so high that 2-3 shotting people is the norm, make it kinda silly. It's twitchy in a bad way and most duels end up being decided by a single laggy roll catch or somebody desperately mashing R1 and getting lucky because escaping a stagger without dying is a crapshoot.

It's mainly the healing and invasion system, though.

>>124041108
They still play up that "humans are the real beasts" thing, the vermin are just the lore explanation for how it happens.

I mean, the fact that people made a fucking religion out of injecting themselves with blood infested with centipede-like parasites so vile they're called 'filth' that transform them into horrible cannibalistic monsters says a lot about the yharnamites.
>>
>>124041425

>>

I probably made that connection because the same type of beasts are in loran and old yharnam
the chalice mentions something about "trace remains of medical practices" that were either to control the scourge of the beast or maybe even cause the outbreak
I'm not really sure what to make of it.
>>124041468
Right, which means it's a real ability you can gain or lose, rather than calling it a hallucination or fantasy, it's more of an ability, which makes me think they're very real
or i'm just diving too much into the semantics of it all. usually when an NPC has maniacal laughter after their dialogue something more sinister is going on there but i'm not sure what, if anything.

Simon specifically tells you when he dies "This place is the source of the Hunter's Nightmare" and then asks you to end the curse of your forefathers. Kos' curse is the Nightmare. Healspam is more restricted in BB than it ever was in any of the Souls games. Demon's Souls let you carry 99 of two different 100% healing items with no noticeable downside, Dark Souls had Estus, 99 Divine Blessings, 99 Humanity, 99 Twin Humanities, and 99 Elizabeth's Mushrooms, and I'm not even going to get started on the nonsense in Dark Souls 2.

Bloodborne lets you have 20 vials (32 if you're retarded and stacking runes), 1 Iosefka's blood, 1 of either Adella's or Arianna's blood, and now 1 Adeline blood. And nothing else.

The problem with healing in BB is that it's so fast, both in activation and recovery. Parrying healers is completely unreliable online, as half the time they'll stutter a bit to the left and your non-tracking bullet will whiff right past, and you still have to be incredibly predictive to catch them, which usually still lets them get the heal off.

You have more healing assets in darksouls 1, but they're all fairly punishable. In dark souls 2, they're even slower and the heal isn't instant so it won't save you from a backstab punish or a combo.

It's honestly cancer in every single game, but BB's healing is DeS-tier straight bullshit.
>>
>>124041795
Blood Dregs, which are in all likelihood the invisible semen of a formless god, and grant Insight, are not obviously concrete objects either like a piece of toast or something. Vermin ruined bloodborne lore. They were so close to perfection but fucked it up in a pre patch.

I think that the vermin are just things that happen to show up in blood or entirely made up and Valtr wants to think he's a good person so he just decides to blame it all on them. Them actually being literally the cause of every fucking problem is so fucking stupid. Everything Valtr says to you should be a red flag. "The evil vermin are the root of all the world's problems! Kill them and now you're a hero! SO GO OUT AND RIP AND TEAR KILL THE DEFILED SCUM"

I'll say it again: it is a 100% red herring. It is a trap for people to think they have a grasp on the curse as some kind of specific, mechanistic plot element.

"Parasitic life forms cause a physical transformation in the host because of their life cycle."
"How did the host contract these parasites?"
"An eldritch curse."

it doesn't actually explain anything

Being able to parry heals is more than the Souls games get, though. In DaS1&2, you get Lloyd's Talismans and those only block Estus healing. In Bloodborne, Numbing Mist blocks all types of vials and the only thing it won't block is Choir Bell, and then on top of that they get to parry healing attempts for the chance at a free critical attack without the person getting to heal beforehand.

Consider: In DaS1/2, it's possible to stack poise and heal through pretty much anything, and lag can mean you sometimes heal even before a backstab can interrupt you. In BB, it's possible to straight deny the heal. Lag fucks all the games over equally, but BB still restricts healing the most and gives a better tool to punish healing.

>>
>>124042856
The game just says the League believes Vermin to be the root of human impurity. I don't know what kind of mental gymnastics are you Anons doing to make it seem like they're BB's midichlorians causing the beast scourge.
>>
>>124042907
Results of shitty translation. In japanese, the note says it keeps their unseen masters hidden away, which would make it out to be the Amygdalas. You know, the ones who are suddenly not invisible after you kill Rom.
>>
>>124042937
It definitely impacts the lore in that the lunar symbolism has lost all meaning now. And all of those notes indicating the Moon Presence's nearness was the cause are meaningless. Why do I want to stop the Mensis ritual if it's not causing the scourge of beasts by reeling in the Moon Presence?
>>
>>124042359
Because the idea that 'the old blood eventually turns people into beasts because it's ancient eldritch godblood' was too abstract for some people and it was honestly a mediocre contrivance because, without an identity of the old one that's the source of the old blood or their motivation, the fact that their blood just happens to mutate people into horrific, bloodthirsty, predatory beastmonsters just seems like a contrivance. Like, Lovecraftian Old Ones -> werewolves just isn't a strong connection on its own, and when you consider the fact that the Great Ones in BB aren't indifferent to humans at all like lovecrafyian ones, and are actually sympathetic to them and willing to interact with and help humanity, the idea that one unidentified great one's blood transforms people into werewolves for some unexplained reason just isn't compelling.

Parasites fit within the themes of the game and falls squarely in both the cosmic horror and gothic horror umbrellas that BB is dancing between. It gives a reason for the beast plague that still connects it to the old ones and doesn't seem anywhere near as loose, vacuous, meaningless or downright contradictory of a connection as the original was.

And even after she messaged him back opening her heart and saying she didn't understand where all this hate was coming from and all that she wanted was to post cool videos of a game she loved and used as an escape from reality, he told her he wished that she would end up killing herself and that she was a worthless piece of shit, so the girl immediately closed her online accounts of everything and completely disappeared (possibly suicided)?

Can't think of a worse individual than this Kobra guy. So utterly driven by jealousy and an untamed wish to be recognized. I can only imagine how miserable he must be IRL to try and fail to become "important" in a niche community with each passing year.

If it's either of those than that means the whole point of the game is fucking retarded.

The night of hunt is a thing because the moon gets closer to the earth because of the ritual and the moon presence. The night is long because of this ritual. This night is when beasts come out, they don't come out any other night. So where do weird parasitic shits fit in? Where does loran fit in? It's all so much more confusing and is seeming to fall into itself.

I'm with the red herring anon.
>>
>>124043081
To take your post a little further:

I personally like the vermin thing because it brings up an idea people often gloss over when talking about aliens, otherworldly shit, or other inhuman things, and that'd be diseases. When the European colonists came to the Americas, the diseases they didn't even know they had decimated the fucking continent. And when the Great Ones visited Yharnam and tried to help the people there, the people ended up getting sick off alien parasites, which is exactly what you'd think would happen when you swap body fluids with something from an entirely different ecosystem.
>>
>>124042907
The Amygdalas. The Mensis school worships them as gods and follows their guidance, but they're hidden from sight until you kill CD-Rom.
>>
>>124043051
why would the moon or moon presence be causing the source of the beasts in the first place? it just wants a surrogate child, unless you're suggesting the entire beast scourge is an elaborate plan to get one. i assume because the last time a large group of people fucked around with a great one they got hit with vermin, so you want to stop that ritual before another great one decides to rain down famine and pestilence on you and your people

Honestly, the moment I read their info I was skeptic. Valtr is an absolute madman who can't even see vermin anymore, and their description lends them a "may-or-may not be real" air. I mean, it's a centipede crawling out of blood, that's some Lynchian shit right there. Also you can only see them if you "choose to see them".

All in all, nice addition, centipede lends creepy symbolism to old blood as a sort of invasive, creeping, crawling, parasite but they also may or may not be a product of your delusional, blood-addled brain.

One is Mergo's and one is the prostitute's child.
There's no explanation for the hunter's workshop one and no hints as to an origin.
The last comes from fake Iosefka but it's unclear as to whether she's managed to become pregnant with a great one and you literally remove the umbilical cord of her dead, unborn fetus directly from her necrotic womb, or if she simply had it on her person because she had used it to become whatever revelation she's enraptured by when you find her.

I think you can probably infer the hunter's workshop cord is the orphan's, or else it would have to be maria's

>>124043081
>without an identity of the old one that's the source of the old blood or their motivation, the fact that their blood just happens to mutate people into horrific, bloodthirsty, predatory beastmonsters just seems like a contrivance
it's the moon presence. he's literally a moon god in a werewolf game, he's the blood moon and the blood moon is specifically blamed for turning people into beasts. he's the only great one with a dark-red blood theme, he shares common model details with the more advanced werewolves, and the one thing that's consistent about blood in this game is that it transforms you into a being "like" the great one it came from. he growls and walks on all fours

i know this theory has never caught on but as far as i'm concerned it's really not abstract. parasites don't even explain anything -- the other parasites (kos parasites) specifically *came from* a specific great one's body (kos). so which great one do the vermin come from? it's no different from asking where the old blood comes from, it doesn't resolve that question at all

No, the cord belongs to whatever was offered up to MP, in order to beckon it. It couldn't have been the Orphan's, that is for sure.
>>
>>124043081
MP crawls around on 4 legs like werewolves and has an exposed cavity as well. It's pretty much the final form for beasthood.

>>124043375
Beasthood is a side effect of the MP's descent. Remember that the more Insight you have, the less beasthood you can attain.

The nature of Insight is explained in the 3rd Brain fluid description
>We fail to realize our own latent potential, until the moment it is lost, and we sense its absence. Ironically, this is the very nature of insight, like the moment one licks one's own blood, only to be startled by its sweetness

Beasthood is what happened when we deny the MP's attempt at adoption. Once you achieve the 999 insight you need to attain your true potential, you become a slug.

There's no contradiction there. The power of the great ones influences the vermin, because they're a parasite that lives in the blood of great ones. The moon descending drives them into a frenzy and accentuates the beastmaking process.

The issue is that if it was the blood itself, then the blood must have a will that is, for some reason, malicious towards humans. Parasites are indifferent. There's no malice, they exploit mankind and twist them into horrible monsters because that's simply how they live. It's cosmic indifferentism, which is a core theme to lovecraftian work. Mankind sought to use the blood for their benefit and instead the vermin use mankind to theirs. It's actually really elegant irony. You don't need to ask for the identity of the great one that the vermin came from because it doesn't matter, they don;t represent the will of their origin, they only represent a darwinist will to live and sustain themselves. If the blood caused beasthood on its own then the blood would have some kind of will, which would tie it back to its supposedly sympathetic owner.

Level 98
VIT 50
END 15
STR 16

BLT 5
ARC 50

Is this viable? Will the 15 END fuck me if I use appropriate runes?

Didn't someone just tell you why that wasn't the case? If Loran had beasts and sank into the sands long before Yharnam existed, and Byrgenwerth is the one that fucked with the Fishing Hamlet, then obviously beasts can't be the Orphan's curse. It's probably just the hunters being trapped forever in a nightmare, which is pretty horrific as far as eternal fates go.

>If the blood caused beasthood on its own then the blood would have some kind of will
how does that follow at all? radiation causes cancer, does that mean radiation has the will to cause cancer? toxins cause poisoning, do toxins have willpower?

the most consistent fiction in the game is that people consume eldritch biomes with the expectation that they will be transformed by it, mentally or in the case of e.g. the ayys physically. entire characters and areas are devoted to researching this transformative aspect. i don't see how it follows that the blood must be like, somehow conscious in its desire to transform people. that's weird

Nah he's actually pretty decent

>>124044457
You're missing another possibility, one that's hinted at a couple of times in the base game's lore (namely the metamorphosis runes): that the blood simply gives mankind the ability to change, but that our tendency towards base behavior causes us to change into beasts more often than not.

Although, that explanation isn't really sufficient considering there only seem to be two or three different classes of creatures people turn into, those being beasts, kin, and vilebloods. And if the vilebloods turned into those due to the type of blood they had, it raises questions about the other types too. Vermin are the only explanation that works, really.

the game has a very consistent use of color to indicate different eldritch biomes. i don't think there's a drop of red like, anywhere in fishing hamlet. the fishing hamlet parasites are kin of kos, and at best i think the association with "vermin" is the entire crux of the red herring

come to think of it, valtr was an old hunter, right? does his obsession with "crushing vermin" reflect the history of the old hunters in the fishing hamlet? he ends up in the nightmare

This. There is zero evidence connecting Kos to the vermin. The 'curse' is the Hunter's Nightmare.
>>
>>124045095
I gotcha, bro. I should've been clearer that the hunter tools would help PvE and gem farming. So it doesn't matter that I don't take it higher than 50 if this is a PvP build.

So this seems like a versatile arcane build, right? I plan to take Kos, Whirligig, and Ludwig to +10. The lack of END hurts, but the difference between 15 and 30 END is only 33%, which can be fixed by using runes.

>"Runesmith Caryll describes the "Beast" as a horrific and unwelcome instinct deep within the hearts of men, while "Clawmark" is an alluring invitation to accept this very nature."

People are already beasts, the moon shit and blood just amplifies it.
>>
>>124045040
That works better as a metaphor than an actual explanation. When you really think about it, none of the named beasts you face in the game are guiltless. They're all humans that in some way or form were monstrous, without even needing to be monsters. It makes the narrative work as a sort of jeremiad where the sinful city of yharnam faces annihilation at the hands of its own people, because their true nature is revealed all at once, teased out as the consequence of a ritual that's prepared to sacrifice the entire city just to satisfy the curiosity of an elite few.

I guess the only issue with that sort of interpretation is the fact that the game focuses almost exclusively on the evils of the church and mensis and the everyday people's evils are put to the wayside, despite being the overwhelming majority of beastly enemies you face.

who implied that the old blood causes any transformation other than beast transformation? people take it for healing and if they take too much, they transform, hence fear the old blood, fear the hunger for old blood, etc.

all the other transformations are caused by other biomes, e.g. the choir experimenting with ebrietas and creating brainsuckers (that physically resemble ebrietas), or kos parasites turning people into Deep Ones like kos

There's nothing wrong with those enemy's hitboxes. Their tracking is insane but that's the fucking point. It's the entire concept behind their design. Reminder: beasthunter and kinhunter gems.

The insect men in Byrgenwerth count as kin, as do the brainsuckers. They don't count as beasts. Snakes in Forbidden Woods don't count as anything at all, and I'm actually kind of disappointed the DLC didn't explain what the fuck is up with that shit because nothing does.

As for insight, take a look at the attached picture and keep the description for the Milkweed rune in mind.

>>124045723
Yes, that's exactly the point I was trying to make with that post. The question is why does old blood cause beast transformation, why would whatever the Choir is doing cause kin transformation, and why do Cainhurst Vilebloods turn into a different type of monster entirely? (On that note, don't most of the Kos things count as kin? They're obviously related if the Kos Parasite interacts with the phantasms in kinmode the way it does.)

You're saying that different blood types cause different transformations, related to the Great One they come from. Obviously, the correct answer is not that people turn into beasts just because they act like beasts, but that it must be something within the blood itself that makes people turn into beasts.

Cosmic horror is technically a type of fantasy, but in the same way that sci-fi is a type of fantasy. We know it isn't real, but for the sake of the genre there needs to be some kind of reasoning behind it. It takes a bit of getting used to, I literally just started by BoM playthrough today and took a break after killing Amelia. It's definitely harder than other weapons but it doesn't feel particularly bad. For normal mobs, try to take advantage of the full moveset as its incredibly useful and versatile. Obviously, just mashing R1 doesn't net good results as you empty an entire stamina bar to kill something. For bosses, use the R1s for safe damage as their recovery is completely fucking nil, and exploit openings with R2s. I usually go in to punish any opening and as soon as I see the boss isn't immediately going to thrash like an autistic child, I combo to an R and then back off or L2 away.

Stack END and get used to taking the hit and run approach as opposed to head-on brute force. I'm sure the damage output will get better at a higher upgrade level, since so much of its AR is in that scaling that doesn't get good until later, as well as gems.

I might actually bother to go chalice spelunking once I hit +6 and try to find some decent mid-tier flat gems to help carry me through the game.

>Cosmic horror is technically a type of fantasy, but in the same way that sci-fi is a type of fantasy. We know it isn't real, but for the sake of the genre there needs to be some kind of reasoning behind it.
this is a game where you travel through nightmares, acquire a metaphorical skull, and a long-dead man opens a door for you after you speak with him. it's really not "in the same way as sci-fi", and if anything this emphasizes how arbitrary the cut-off point for "reasoning" is in science fiction (blood is too mystical for monstrous transformation, but parasites are good enough)

at the best if we assume valtr is right about the existence of vermin they're a pointless detail. when people use them as evidence that kos caused the beast plague or w/e they are like, 3 levels of speculation removed from what we definitely know

Cosmic horror, in the lovecraftian sense, is literally science fiction. It's rooted primarily in the emerging scientific, philosophical and anthropological concepts of his era and speculates as to the nature of the universe were those concepts to be taken to a logical extreme.

The fish dude at the entrance to the hamlet seems to imply as much. Probably a specific subset of the great ones (Kos and whatnot) since we know other great ones do have blood.
>>
>>124047730
Highly speculative. Yes, Laurence had to have beckoned the moon presence from somewhere, and the Nightmare is as good a guess as any since that's apparently where a bunch of Great Ones come from. However, the strange, punched-out appearance of the moon in the DLC is in fact just clouds, and they disappear when you kill Orphan's ghost and reveal a regular old moon. That punched-out appearance does perfectly resemble the blood-drunk hunter's eye however, and is likely a reference to that given the description on the blood-drunk hunter's eye.

The only things we know for certain:

1. Kos washes up on shore
2. Villagers start to worship her and change
3. Healing Church shows up and starts forcefully opening up the skulls of the villagers
4. Maria, Gherman, Ludwig, Laurence were all part of the village expedition
5. Maria becomes Researches Hall overseer, later kills herself
6. Kos curses the Hunters for what they did in the village trapping them in the Nightmare
7. Maria becomes the guardian of the Fishing Hamlet, she wants the Nightmare to continue, it's her form of atonement

Everything else is speculation

The line between man and beast is blurred. Becoming an bloodthirsty animal and a raving lunatic murdering innocents to try and find eyes inside their skulls really isn't too different. Does any want think that the DLC is a bit narmy after Ludwig? You have an insane asylum with Bobblehead Paitents and Plip plops.

Then you reach innsmouth and you fight cute waddling Murlock people trying to skewer you with spears twice the length of their body that they can barely wield or a funny frantic chopping and gardening tools. Worst is that they go "Gargle gargle blop blop" when they die in the words of my sister. And then I saw the fish dogs and I burst out laughing

It's a shame we don't get to contact Kos. I am assuming Micolash has some knowledge of what went on, obviously. Maria doesn't want you to find the village; there's no way she would know that killing the Orphan would stop the curse or it even existed since it's literally crawled out of the Corpse when you went there.

Most likely the reason why it did so is because the slug ladies prayed to it hard enough for it to come out and stop your rampage through the village.

Gascoigne because this is my first souls game and I had no idea how to parry and visceral. Motherfucker was awful. >>
>>124049015
My first playthrough was post-dlc release and Ludwig was honestly the most trouble for me. It took him on at a low level and his second form could one-shot me. I went through so many tries I was eventually popping beast blood pellets and blowing up the first phase in about 30 seconds just from the sheer amount of practice I'd had.

All of the dlc bosses were challenging (aside from the failures), but Ludwig was the boss that forced me to git gud, and the skills I developed fighting him for 2 hours carried over and made Maria and the orphan pretty straightforward and quick victories by comparison.

The main game was a bit of a joke. The only boss I died to was Gascoigne while I was learning to parry. The DLC did a much better job of balancing boss HP and damage output and made the fights more rewarding as a result.

Is the Hunter's Nightmare actually sucking in "current" hunters besides the player character though?

It seems the only ones in it were the Old Hunters who were around during the time of Gehramn, Ludwig, Maria, etc

So nobody is actually bearing the curse of their forefathers....because it's the forefathers who are bearing that curse and suffering in the nightmare anyway.

I like the little story that his gear and weapon tell you about him.

The Bowblade says;
>But aside from a few close friends, Simon was scoffed at for his choice of arms, for who would dare face the beasts with a measly bow?

But the Harrowed set says;
>Certain Church hunters obfuscate their identities and slip into the nooks and crannies of the city. This is the garb that allows these harrowed individuals to go unnoticed.
>These hunters are keen to early signs of the scourge, serving as a first line of defense against its outbreak. Or perhaps, when the time is right, they find signs of the scourge where there are none. It just goes to show, the corner beggar is not always who he seems.

So you can really imagine Simon scoffing right back at all those other ignorant sluts; a silent sniping tool is the perfect weapon for someone who wants to go unnoticed and eliminate threats before they can manifest. Simon didn't hate firearms arbitrarily, he hated them because they're loud. He was the opposite of a Powderkeg.

Also, the Suspicious Beggar wears part of the harrowed set, and the description mentions beggars; does this suggest that Abhorrent was once a hunter?

Kinda puts a different spin on "Rancid beasts, every last one of ->us<-."

This is quite brilliant to be honest, kinsman, and it really makes sense. The suspicious beggar epiphany is very interesting.

In the Cathedral Ward, by the one unique giant guy that has the ball on a chain as a weapon there's a stairway down to a chest with a shitty gem and a locked door beside it. I have never managed to find a key or any way to open that door. How do you open it? What's on the other side?

As long as you don't go up and fight him, I think, yes. If you're worried you can run past. I just ran past, ran past all the dogmen and opened the shortcuts.

I can't believe he one-shotted me man.

What the fuck was that shit.

Every time I try to give the second brain fluid to Saint Adeline she just tells me that too much blood is greedy. I've already killed the Living Failures and have reloaded the area. Is there something I'm missing?

vermin don't even actually exist, they are a shared delusion by the league of pure aryans that bad things are happening because of filthy jew doctors, half negro beasts and slav slugs
