I don't understand why there are so many settlements when artillery ranges are pretty far.

For example, artillery from Sanctuary can hit targets up to the Corvega plant/Lexington but can't reach the vicinity of Graygarden and Outpost Zimonja. Likewise, artillery from the Castle can reach Bunker Hill and basically the entire Diamond City/Goodneighbor area.

I would be fine with the real-time dialog they have in FO4 if it didn't lead to shit like quest givers walking away while they're in the middle of their spiel. Honestly though, it's not used well. There's no response to interactions being interrupted. There's rarely situations where you're talking to more than one person. Frozen in time, one on one conversation is fine.

Probably just trying to fit everything into a 4-choice dialogue wheel. A (slightly) more generous interpretation would be that they wanted to avoid the appearance of a "right" way to play. In previous fallouts (especially NV) I tried to spec early for skill checks in every playthrough after the first, because I'm a powergaming shitlord. I like that there isn't an incentive to do that anymore, but fuck a dialogue wheel.

I've killed swan on my current lone rifleman playthrough in the upper teens with only a little difficulty, how hard would it be to get his weapon early? Granted I'd have to make it there, probably just sneak my way past all the ghouls and shit.

I feel like the concept of a right way to play is pretty much just for powergaming shitlords. But you're right, Bethesda probably wanted the idea of people just being able to do all quests no matter what. Honestly, New Vegas still gave you plenty of ways to do a quest. Maybe your lack of repair would mean no robot friend or your lack of science meant you couldn't find the best outcome but your security meant you could avoid a tunnel of deathclaws.

Pretty much. Bethesda pretty much gutted even more of the rpg elements while improving a lot of the other gameplay elements. Writing is better in some parts(companions) but dull in others, even more so than 3. If we got that New Vegas treatment we'd be looking at an instant GOTY.

Go quest for the railroad til you unlock armored clothing. Then buy shipments of ballistic fiber from KLEO in Goodneighbor.

About how many quests in do you have to do for them?
