Nah not how it works at all.

It's the target's designation, that is true. However all target designations are alphabetical and given out in order of targets acquired. The first mech your team sees is always A, then the next is B and so on and so forth. There's no "his next mech is AA", AA is just the 27th person who has been targeted.

It's just a sort of handy thing to have to know when a called out target has been killed, if someone were to be there calling targets.

It's a reference to Project Phoenix, the technical readout manual that put out the revised artwork for the unseen after the whole HG legal debacle. Which, you know, PGI has already done with other re-seen for their own "Project Phoenix" including the Locust, Griffin, Shadow Hawk, Wolverine, Thunderbolt, and BattleMaster. The Marauder, Warhammer, Rifleman, and Archer also being in that TRO.

So it's not just PGI believing they're hot shit, the symbolism was already there from the original BT creators, who themselves were just unoriginal enough to use someone else's abysmal designs.

So i decided to try MWO. I played a while last night, compelted the tutorial, and took me 5mil and bought an enf-4p and proceeded to unlock all the basic skills.

I really like this thing. I have nothing to compare it to of course being a newbie, but it seems to have the right mix of firepower durability and speed. I won one game for us by rushing back to base and killing one of the lights capping, and damaging another. And ive done pretty good i think just tagging along and focusing fire on stuff. Ive got it running with 3 medium lasers and pretty heavy armor (front maxed all around, back varying between 10 and 14)

Now ive got a question, im of course looking to go ahead and get two more of these; with the sale on now, should i get the r4(c)? Is it different in any way from the regular 4r other than its 30% more income?

I really like the way these things look, so ill probably get 4 of them. Will going into CW with only 200 tonnes total be seen as a bad thing? I really dont want to play anything but mediums because my OCD, which typically makes me good at what i do in these kinds of games, also is cripplingly restrictive. If i dont keep a focused purpose i lose interest in the game. I became a davion loyalist fitting to my role as an enforcer player.

anyway, tl:dr - new player, is buying a (c) medium worth it and how bad is it to only play mediums and be less than max possible weight for CW?

Welcome newfriend.

The ENF-4P is an excellent medium. That being said, the loadout you have for it is a little strange. 3 medium lasers? The stock build comes with an AC/20. Did you remove that, or just forget to mention it?

Also doing CW undertonned will significantly gimp your performance in that arena. Your enemies will be bringing, for the most part, at least 2 heavy mechs. I bring 3. Bringing 4 mediums, even if you really enjoy them and they're a solid chassis like the enforcer, will give you very poor results compared to another player. I suggest finding a heavy chassis that tickles your autism in a way similar to the Enforcer.

And I'd suggest not buying the (C) variants. IIRC they don't actually give cbill bonuses, just experience bonuses, which are significantly less useful.

I experimented at first with 4 medium lasers but found it too hot. Then i tried 3 and that was working alright, then i saw a build that had moved the ac/20 ammo around to different areas so i did that because i assumed there was a reason for it. Then i saw another build that took the heatsink off. I didnt realize you could run with out one, so i did and added more armor and though its a little hotter now i find it to be just about right.

I view the ac20 as my main weapon. ive got 2 medium lasers on the torso instead of 2 in the arm because i use that arm as a shield

I basically follow bigger things around and shoot ac/20 at things, using laser as heat allows, and then at the right time i break off and flank or rush back to base if needed

There are no heavies as cute as the enf

Because lasers are pinpoint precise and have no travel time, just burn time. This lets you poke at someone instantly, and even if they back out before you finish burning, they still took a % of your damage. In a brawl, their precision means that if you're good and/or have pulse lasers, you can keep target on one component anyway. They also require no ammo, only cooling, which is something every weapon needs anyway.

Autocannons aren't all bad, and the AC/20 is fuckin' great, but between IS quirks, clan laser base stat superiority, and the recent releases, laser vomit are just flat out "in", though ballistics mixed into laser vomit is quite common. See: Medicine Laser and Goose Mad Cat, most ebin jaguar builds

Lasers are only meta if you're packing a bunch of them on a chassis that is quirked well for them, and stacked with Elite efficiencies and modules. Or if you're using them as a stand-off weapon to poke and fade at distance.

In reality, it's not the lasers that are meta, so much as a few select mechs that are meta when used with the right laser builds.

This also means that they often require considerably less skill to use, and decent laser boats can be a crutch to newbies, and a deadly cudgel to experienced players.

The reason i like this game is it lets me instantly get fanatical about my faction. I know shit about battletech other than watching some cartoons, i always played earthsieges, not mechwarrior, but the fact that clans have the high tech lasers makes me dislike them and fall right into a fanatical davion projectile weapon mindset.

You see, kinetic energy is the best energy. When all else fails you hit something with a rock, and all the fancy lased photons or nutrino particle beams or plasma weapons guided by a channel of ionised crap, nothing matches a solid kinetic impactor. It doesnt lose potency over distance due to impossible to maintain beam focus, its only going to slow down in atmosphere, and the thing about atmosphere is that anything with it is only going to accelerate the projectile faster towards it thanks to gravity. The mass driver is the most perfect and brutal of all weapons, and thats why projectiles are a best, and the bigger the a bester.

Im also suspicious of these xl engines people keep talking about. They probably work well because lasers let you turn and get damage distributed.

I bought a firebrand since due to 50% off i figured i should buy something with a credit income. it can dual ac20.

I think im never going to drive anything that cant use at least one ac20 unless im using it to unlock skills.

I still don't understand why a large pulse laser, the most powerful laser weapon available, is still lighter than an AC/5 autocannon weapon mount. Not to mention you still require several tons of ammunition to get something out of it.

The more powerful ballistic weapons like the AC/20 and AC/10 are also shorter range than most medium lasers, so it wouldn't be that bad it their weight was cut to something like 10 tons for AC20, 5 tons for AC10, 3 tons for AC5, 1.5 tons for AC2.

Sorry but PPCs are objectively the best weapons in the MW franchise and all other choices are for fuckbois except SRMs and RACs.

XL engines are quite nice. They can be protected through twisting no matter what you're up against. Lasers you can distribute the damage, while projectile weapons you can tank on another body part with good timing.

If you like the AC20 you might consider saving MC to get a Yen lo Wang someday, it's basically just the fastest viable AC20 mech you can run and is bretty fun if you're head over heels in love with the weapon.

I should hope you've played the HBK-4G too, it's probably the best performing AC20 in the game.

Because looking at the nova and the new changes, the thing literally has to gimp itself with sub-par weaponry to compensate for it's awful survival prospects. It is also now reduced to a two-build bitch. Either you got 12x c-ER small laser + 4x machineguns for a short range brawler that overheats on any normal map and you die, or you go 2x ER PPCs for a poptart wannabe sniper that gets violently assraped by a 20-ton light that gets close.

The summoner is forced into the awful ER PPC sniper build or the fucktarded SRM/ streak shotgun build that doesn't kill anything. Getting 4x lasers on the thing means you'll have to be jumping from rooftop to rooftop, but most maps don't have any terrain that allows you to flank. So the summoner is fucked six ways from sunday.

Top speed goes to 58kph. So this means you'll still have 17,5 tons to spend for double heatsinks and jumpjets and extra ammunition. Could even upgrade the SRMs to artemis ones, or go straight for Streak SRM6's.


That fucking mech outclasses the cum gargler and the gimp electrocutioner by miles.

Because it generates no heat, and with the old weapon cooldown module and skill, you could lower it's cooldown of 4 to 3.2 seconds. That enabled the gun to be part of a lot of laser vomit builds that would overheat with an equal amount of laser weapons in it's stead.

Generally this was adopted because, hey, 15 damage every 4 seconds that doesn't add to the ridiculous heat generation clan mechs do (because ballistic weapons are a piece of shit, pod space on clan mechs is highly limited, and most of them are majority energy hardpoints.) and it was used in close combat pretty damn extensively. Like, it was better than an AC/20 in all aspects except face kissing range burst damage. Some clan mechs have like, no other option but to spam lasers and overheat in a second, or laser+gauss for a more heat efficient solution.

See here's the thing. The less damage you deal to kill a mech, the better you are as a pilot and the better your mech is as a mech. So to say that a mech is good because it dealt a lot of damage, is retarded.

Someone who only scores 4 cockpit headshots and doesn't break 200 damage, is much better than someone who gets 4 kills with 1200 damage.

There are some correlations with the best mechs in the game. Typically in terms of weight efficiency. How much spare tonnage you have in relation to how much tonnage you're bringing. Mechs like the Dire Wolf and Timber Wolf share these qualities, they bring a lot of firepower compared to other mechs of the same weight. Of course, quirks make a few exceptions (blackjack 1X, blunderbolt 5SS) as well as specifically high-mounted weapon hard-points.

Anyway, back to point:

I still stand by the fact that most of the clan wins in CW come from the fact that IS players run shit decks, or are highly disorganized. Individually, a Thunderbolt with a close range wub build or several large lasers will fucking rape another heavy clan mech easy, it's just that most clan matches I play in I see someone telling people to focus fire even if it means "killstealing," to help their nearby buddies.

At least, that's my experience while with the jade turkeys. People spamming all their shit in to the same targets as their two or three others clan teammates, quickly taking shit down.

It might turn problematic if PGI keep buffing IS with more overall health quirks and weapon quirks to compensate for the fact that the average IS pubbie is running an unoptimized hunk of junk and trying to solo through a killing field alone.

Not a whole lot of changes, it's really similar to what I ran in MW4 for the Marauder. I'll leave the 5D and 5M for the cuhrazy meta laser boat builds that'll probably come around but for the 3R I wanted something more respectable.

I will predict the Warhammer quirks.

Three premises:
a) The mech is supposed to be poorly armored in exchange for a large and varied array of weapons, at least lore-wise.
b) Many IS mechs in MWO at the moment are getting a lot of massive mobility quirks, particularly the Marauder which this thing will be hot on the heels of.
c) The WHM is PPC-centric mech, just like the MAD except with a missile pod instead of an autocannon.

Therefore, the only remaining quirk niche left for the Whammy is firepower. Giving additional armor or structure quirks steps on the entire point of the mech being more fragile than average and is just so tripe when so many mechs have the same thing. Giving it a primary focus on mobility is a bit too redundant in the face of so many speedy twitchy mechs, and I think such quirks is less fitting for a humanoid mech as opposed to a chicken walker. They did nerf clan heatsinks. Specifically Clan double heatsink heat capacity. This means where clans could alpha poke a lot before, now most laser vomit builds will be on the verge of, if not outright overheat from a single alpha. They "buffed" heat dissipation rate on clan double heatsinks by 0.1, from 1.4 to 1.5. You won't notice the difference unless you're running a below 1 score on heat mitigation, and even then it's not going to stop you from overheating from a single alpha. This just means you'll get to shoot smaller groups more often... which is now impossible to do, as clans lost any form of acceleration and deceleration capability, and do not have the downright +health quirks most IS mechs just received in spades.

This wouldn't be that bad, if most clan mech hardpoints weren't energy based, and most clan mechs didn't have so much extra stuff that you can't get rid of or mandatory upgrades that aren't simply possible. Endo-steel on a lot of the clan mechs is missing, if PGI gave players the ability to put on endo steel, most clan mechs would get a whole lot more build viability. You'd probably see a lot of SRM/ laser or laser/ AC builds, instead of the current "ALL LASER ALL THE TIME" you do now.

Well, ballistic weapons weighing way too much to begin with is it's own set of problems.

I'd honestly cut ballistic weapon weights down by like 40-50% across the board. Like, AC2 could weigh 4 (c-AC2 3) tons which would enable players to take 2 tons of ammunition for the same weight as before.

AC5 could be 5 tons, UAC5 6 tons, LBX10 7 tons, AC10 8 tons, AC20 12 tons, Gauss Rifle 12 tons (with the latest cooldown increase it's okay to weigh the same as an AC20). Machine guns are just appropriately weighed, they just need other fixed to make them viable.

Most players play IS. Cheaper mechs, and now just as efficient as the ludicrously costly clan mechs.

This creates the population imbalance where there's twice or even thrice the number of IS players attacking/ defending a planet than there are clan defenders/ attackers. Thus you get 10 minute wait times to kill an objective in 5 minutes only to get like 200-300k cbills and a few loyalty points.

Almost definitely. To be fair it was a completely one-sided stomp the first time, the IS never stood a chance. I'll be interested to see how it plays out.

Honestly I'm somewhat hype, these big CW events always make me wish this game wasn't shit. When Black Knights came out I had planned to try and raise Kong to take back Connaught but that fell through for obvious reasons. As much as I'd love to try and secure a place on the leaderboards for us I don't think we've got enough good players that care anymore.

They're tanky as fuck and can be built tons of different ways. You can put ranged focused ERLL builds on the 5M, hell you can put a brace of 3 large lasers on almost all of them and corner peak with them. With standards they just don't die, I expect they'll be very effective first wave mechs. They're a little slower than Thunderbolts and Timber Wolves, though, but they also almost all can take JJs which is pretty useful in CW.

You can take 2 Marauders and still have 100t to work with is really the nice thing. 2 Marauders and 2 Cents will probably get seen a lot this weekend I bet, but really there's a lot of decent options in there like Blackjack and Shadowhawk or Firestarter/Raven and Thunderbolt.

Personally I'll use 2 Marauders and 2 Crabs and I'm sure it'll be fine, the key's just having people.

Anybody know anything about game sound files?

I'm attempting to replace the main menu and map intro themes with music from MW4 Mercenaries. My initial attempt at a mod failed so I checked out the already made MW2 sound mod and tried to replicate what they did with my OGG files and the game still refuses to load them.

They're identical to the original files, 16 bit, 44100hz, and 224kbps bitrate, only length is different but looking at the MW2 mod that shouldn't even matter.

When the AS-7S(L) came out Kong was incredibly hype because it appeared for all intents and purposes to be a vorpal +1 DDC. You literally build it the same way, except you exchange ECM for another SRM6 launcher. It turns out it was actually unwieldy and difficult to use so we discarded it almost totally, but with the new quirks (specifically the -10% missile heat quirk and the structure buffs) it is actually worth using.

So an AC/20, SRM6x4, 2 medium lasers, and the biggest standard engine you can fit. I think I use a 320, but it depends on your taste.

IS Large pulses have a max range of 730m. Clan large pulses have a max range of 1200m. IS LPL have full damage range at 365m. Clan LPL is at 600m.

You are literally doing max damage at 600 meters where IS large pulses are doing somewhere around 3-4 damage a volley to you at your max range.

The Goose is pretty overnerfed, the DPS has bottomed out hard on it and it's pretty hard to justify it on any of my old builds now.

Not that I had it on many but still, there's not much in the way of replacement. The ML + Goose combo particularly is a tough sell now since it doesn't function in any regard as a brawling weapon anymore.

If you're so stoneheaded and dead set on trying to brawl with less weapons than your opponent is bringing while ignoring the weapons defining trait, then you could learn to flank your target.

Stripping the stock weapons, external double heatsinks, and with the XL360, you have 39,25 tons to reallocate.

Saving 1,25 tons for any armour that was skimmed from the frame to achieve stock loadout, I'm thinking of the following: 3x cLPLs, cUAC/10 with 3 tons ammo, 3xSRM4s with 2 tons ammo. This ends up with a total of 36 tons of weight for weapons systems, with an alpha strike damage of 73.

The previous loadout runs rather hot if you fire all of them continuously, so if you want to improve heat efficiency you can remove the SRMs and get extra 5 tons to reallocate into double heatsinks or extra UAC10 ammo at your discretion.

All in all, the Orion IIC is looking like it might shape up to be a rather nice mech. Certainly leagues better than the IS version.

Blackjacks went from meme mech tier to rapist dog tier overnight, literally gained 6 inches of flaccid penis girth for no reason. Start there if you want to have fun in a medium mech. Most other memeium mechs are where they used to be with the exception of Shadowhawks which all gained really good quirks when they used to have essentially none.

Atlai are still meme tier but are somewhat useable at least with the new weapon quirks, the issue of course is that they're still just bait for long range harassment and you can't really do anything about it. Other IS assaults got some good stuff, Awesomes are incredible and PGI apparently decided that Victors have been punished enough for their ancient transgressions and gave them some good stuff.

Anything that had insane fire rate quirks is now shit. Greg claims the dragon is still worthwhile but I think he's just biased.

IS heavies in general are all a lot tougher now. Catapults have a total of 40 extra health on their ears, for example.

they are both mech games, its a knockoff in that sense, but we are talking about the setting/story of the universe.

as far as potential for the setting, the starsiege universe has much more potential variety in mech design because they have two completly different things. clan and is mechs are going to be much more similar to each other design wise than human and cybrid hercs simply because the machines dont really need cockpits or lifesupport systems.

the overall setting of complete struggle is more interesting than mechwarriors 'and then there was this war here, and then this faction vanished, but parts of it remain, and then there was another war, and then a peace treaty, and...'

boring. they even threw away potential, they could have done more with the clans, isolation and purpose could have changed them much more than it did. They are basically just 'different humans'. They could have gone all crazy with the eugenics thing and started genetic manipulation and biotech and make living mechs that their warriors directly interfaced with or something with brain tenticals or whatever.

Then think of the possibilities, biologic mecs, with limited self healing but extra vulnurability to certain kinds of weapon, could have been much more dynamic (starsiege did this by radiation weapons that were effective against humans if you target the cockpit for example, but this could have been taken to even bigger extreems)

Its just bland. The setting reminds me of what it is i guess, shitty 80s sci-fi.

speaking of all this though, why dont we have awesome starsiege/tribes style quick chats? Why doesnt EVERY game have them?

Because the worst setting won the war back in the 80s and 90s.

Just going to have to accept that. The objectively worst setting with the worst ruleset ended up the 'popular' one. Stompy robots is niche enough that this killed off any chance of getting better games and story.

i originally posted in response to a post that brought up that nobody cared about mw lore and setting with a complaint that the worse lore and setting won (the reason why nobody cares about it is because it sucks)

actual game mechanics are not relevant to the discussion because game mechanics can change as an IP evolves.

we could be playing the exact same game but with a better setting, that gives even more lore basis for even more unique different kinds of things to be created for the game of the present and the future.

I'm telling you why it's the more well known one though, and that's because the games were more appealing from a game aspect. The franchise blossomed. Most people who know MW still don't know the fucking lore. Earthsiege's lore died when Tribes came about.

Mechwarrior's setting remained because it had so much to draw from but that doesn't mean it was ever a draw. The choice was never between the two settings, it was between two games, and the game won out with the worse setting because it was a better game.

i also dont agree mw was a better game. starsiege had tanks and more interesting support weapons. You could say mw had better customization, but thats not really gameplay, well, depending on what you count as gameplay (i guess clicking a button in a game could, technically, count as gameplay)

At the end of the day though starsieges master server is still up and running, whereas MW has this.

What killed starsiege was vivendi universal.

tribes 1 was a side project of the main earth/starsiege line (its set in the distant future, the tribes are the descendants of the people who escaped on the dies irae and found themselves in some far off distant part of the universe. Ive only got a rough idea of the lore during the tribes era so i dont know the exact order of things, but i recall that something happened that made them obsolete after it was demonstrated that infantry could beat them (probably due to jetpacks and personal shields and stuff)

The story was that the tribes don't have enough HERCs to consider fielding them in every single battle. They're only reserved for major conflicts, and even then used as a supporting firebase.

Producing power armour and training people to practically live in them was cheaper than using HERCs that were several generations old (like using IS mechs, but equipping troops with clan elemental armor) so they never really bothered forming a HERC industry.

That, and, Tribal society evolved towards highly rules-intensive combat that borders on ritualistic rather than open conflict, so they evolved into the mindset that dropping a HERC onto a distant outpost you and your enemy agreed to fight at to decide a conquests outcome is dishonorable, and has diminishing returns because of such few targets.

Highlander is the worst of the three right now. It's hardpoints are pretty much the exact same as the zeus, it's just bigger tonnage and size wise and has access to jumpjets. Gauss rifle, large/ ER large lasers. Sometimes you can squeeze in 2 or 3 SRM4's for some short range punch, but not often. The Highlander used to be the poptart king, jumpjetting over terrain to shoot off PPCs and it's gauss then falling behind cover again.

Awesome is commonly seen in two setups: Large lasers, or PPCs. A third, more rare setup is an LRM boat.

Zeus is a lighter highlander that can't jump, but it's smaller so you can abuse more terrain. Builds are commonly about 2-3 large lasers, gauss rifle or 2x AC5's and, depending on variant, 3x SRM6's. You could even put 3x LRM5's or LRM10's in the couple variants that have multiple missile hardpoints in that arm.

Misery all they way baby!

If you don't mind being slow as fuck, the Misery is the way to go. It is absolutely my favorite mech to use. It's fun, satisfying, universally practical, and has the best survivability I've seen from any mech.
