It saw better days, the elite specs make it very unfair if you don't have HoT and even if you do, there are a couple that are way stronger than the rest of them in pvp.
But again, fun is subjective, you may find something that make you have a blast in there, somewhere.

Nowadays most content is designed to be done in parties/large groups. There is stuff to do alone though if you feel like lone wolfing.

Check the server lists, there is a fair bit of servers full/near full, and all of them are active in wvw, but wvw is in a pretty bad spot right now.

The mechanics of PvP are good but Anet has fuck all knowledge of how to make game types interesting.

IF you are alone, PvP is a struggle, most of the PvE game is easy enough to solo

Not really, only in WvW if your unlucky, and even then if a 50 man zerg chased you down they wasted their time and its a small win for you.

Decent gear is fairly cheap. Only the top top stuff is expensive to get.

Finally have 60 tomes again. What class should I tome up to 80 and mess around before I park her next to the flax farm?

I'm currently mostly playing a Rev since HoT, but used to play mainly Ele and Engi. I also have a mesmerslut at 80 as well. I'm mostly a WvWfag, but been enjoying our very limited raid content as of late.

I remember before crafting the exalted armour myself, my character is still wearing it. However when I go in my crafting I only seem to be able to make the masquerade rare stuff and don't seem to be able to find exalted armour there anymore despite still having 400 crafting in tailoring.
