Legend is probably the best 4x i've played in a long while. There are some issues with it but my biggest (bad AI) was recently improved with a major patch. Each faction plays fairly differently so no two feel the same. Music is possibly some of the best i've heard in a vidya in a long time.

Create death corridors with slow modules and claymores. Use your heroes as living sentries when you dont have enough dust, not operating for a few turns is better than getting another wave of monsters. Spend all your dust before leaving a floor if a merchant accepts dust, its a great way to get cheap stuff.

There is a cooldown on peace negotiation after you capture a city. Just because cities have lower strength doesn't mean you have to grab them all.
Also there is a warscore mechanic, once it reaches 70+, the civ will sign a peace treaty.

I used to play so many space 4x games trying to find the perfect one and then I found Distant Worlds Universe and I haven't gotten tired of it yet.

Pros:
>complex economy
>many races with unique victory conditions
>private sector (transport freighters, migration) runs itself
>big tech tree
>pre-warp start (if you want
>immigration policies (choose to deport, enslave for an economic boost, or exterminate alien races on your planets)

Cons:
>2d graphics (I like them though, they have a certain charm)
>ship design is just a list of parts, can be difficult

5. I usually play around 7 in the normal version, but apparently CBP messes with difficulty so that Level 1 was the comparatively new Level 4, or at least, that's what they said in the update notes. so I dialed it down a bit.

I'd hate to see what the new level 8 is like, because this was a fucking nightmare by the endgame. Or maybe I just had some really bad luck with the AI and this difficulty isn't as bad as it seems.

You know, Bushido might be a garbage UA, but when the AI gets to pump out units twice as quickly, it's not bad. And by that I mean unbelievably annoying. Like on equal footing, Iklwa is fairly strong, but completely useless to the AI who barely pays any gold to begin with.

>>
how do I not be shit at these kinds of games? I'm always way behind the AI.
>>
>>123620558
I wouldn't say they're quite civ 5 levels of required but they sure are nice to have.
>>
>>123621901
What difficulty do you usually play on, because with anything past 4, the AI begins to get free technologies.
>>
>>123626034
Normal.
>>
>>123626061
Scum it up.
Steal any and all technologies you can. Even if you have the same number or more techs than someone else, chances are, they may know something you don't.
Don't be afraid to move your starting settler during the first turn or two. Settling on hills is good for early production, and settling on resources gives you their yields immediately, though you won't be able to improve them.
I'd recommend a start by building at least one Scout because ruins are the best thing for a budding civ. Heck, I usually build 2.
Population is king. Always go for internal trade routes to pump your cities when possible.
Designate what cities are for what. Usually, I leave my capital for wonders because it tends to have the most production, my second and third city for military production, and the fourth for misc.
Pay civs, especially strong but not too strong warmongering civs, to attack each other. The longer civs squabble, the farther they fall behind.
Even if you have to go out of your way to do it, complete any city state quest you can. Allies giv great benefits.
Barbarian Encampments never spawn where you can see, so a good field of vision with scouts is important. Also, use scouts to spy on enemies.
To help seem like less of a warmongerer to your peers, see if they'd like to participate in wars.
Settle around jungles when you can, but make sure you still have production tiles. Jungles make great money/science tiles in the late game.
Also look for mountains. Observatories are really good.
That's all I really got. Also, don't be afraid to be a piece of shit on people you know are weaker then you, but don't make it a habit unless you're a warlord.
>>
>>123627090
>>123626061
A couple of other scumming tips.
Unless you have MODS that stop this, you can declare war on city-states, and make peace on the same turn. Use this to get free workers if they're close.
It'll make you look bad, but if you can't bribe someone to go to war for you, you can always promise to go to war with them, and do absolutely nothing when it happens but turtle. Better yet, if they go to war prematurely before the 10 turn promise, just refuse when it's supposed to happen, in fact, go to war with them, and turn it into a 2 v 1.
While I'm at it, go to war with losing civs, especially civs with cities that are about to be taken. I remember once, I casually took a city from Denmark, because my Scout was strolling by his territory during an attack.

If I'm not in the mood for weebing it up then I usually play as Rhodesia.
>>
>>123620558
i would buy the classic if you're unsure you would like it
its a good 4x though, so if you're already comparing it to civ, you'll most likely enjoy it for at least several playthroughs, and the dlc will only add to that number of plays

otherwise buy the bundle, its the most any of it has gone on sale, and some of the content in it is only on sale that much bundled, specifically the new two, echoes of auriga and lost tales
>>
Why isn't a Lake in a desert considered flood plain
>>
>>123628792
I use America as a default when testing mods, so I main them by association.
mfw being able to buy opponent tiles in CBP
mfw buying off Great Person Tile improvements, Natural Wonders, and important resources through a combination of forward settling, buying inward, and sending Great Generals into bought land so they can steal even more land.
Manifest Destiny baby.
>>
>>123630517
because lakes dont flood yearly and give the boon of the nile?
flood plain isn't irrigation, its flood plain

tech for expansion approval (useless for cultists) and approval buildings
most likely though since you're cultists, its shitty city layout
generally, you want either a line city (straight city, two tiles wide) or a triangle city (a fucking triangle)
heroes can give it also, but thats not as worthwhile, and i believe assimilating eyeless ones gives 5 per

basically, just build your city better. you can have offshoots to work more/better fidsi tiles, but you NEED (cultist specifically) higher level districts, since theirs can go up to level 3

There is no faction of wandering mages. There's a faction of masochist mages and a faction of wandering merchants, but no combination of the two.

Having played both, what I really like about EL is the clearly distinct variety in the playstyles for each civ, while AOW was more shades of difference.

on higher difficulties, i presume the same stuff would translate, but im not personally sure

the hero is... better than expected since she had piss poor voting. The real boost is that sisters themselves have been buffed, so shes not a blatant waste of money in either role

With the Cult it's all about influence generation. Early game I'll put points into industry and gold for an economy lead, and use my influence to convert a few easily defensible villages. Empire plans and Boosters are always cheap, so no worries there. Since the Cultists only get one city, it's much easier to micromanage your population to suit your current needs.

As the game goes on I'll switch more population to influence for converting, and build up at least two mobile armies for holy war purposes. From there on it's war with every other empire, peace is no longer an option. Then just convert infidels to your heart's desire.

That particular game was on Hard, so I can't speak much for higher difficulties. And speaking of Cultists, are these guys cyborgs or what?

Never really, as you've probably noticed if you've paid attention to the quest, most of the Cult Quest text is from the perspective of a convert.

What we can make out it that they are hella stronk and persuasive, but their nature is never really explained beyond "ancient robots with a grudge for their creator."

More enlightening is the faction backstory posts on the amplitude forums, and some of the various diplomacy interaction you can have with them. E.g, the Cultist ambassador mentions the Queen and the Unspoken when you submit treaties.

From what I recall, the Queen is an immensely powerful robot who got stuck in her body during the cataclysm resulting fro mthe war between Concrete and Virtual Endless.

Essentially she was trapped in sensory deprivation for centuries, which drove her utterly and completely mad.

Now her initial purpose was to rule over the other robots, and someho, after centuries of inactivity, she managed to reanimate some of them.
One of those was the Unspoken, who was so attuned to his mistress he, too, turned completely and pyshopathically bonkers.

For some reason, only a few of the other bots were similarly driven into madness, with most of them being relatively sane, although blindly obedient to the will of their Queen, and of the Unspoken, her mouthpiece (or is he really ?)

From the heroes description, you can also find out that mortal convert (I think it's either Exid the Chosen or Andom the Seer) can somehow become robots.

Honestly I'm confused as well.

>>
>>123668291

To complete >>123668215
Every faction wants industry and food (in that order) as a priority, except Broken Lords who don't give a shit about food.

Rivers are nice because they provide natural bonuses in food, and buildings in town can further their usefulness by providing extra resource income per exploited river tile (Dust Dredger from Aquapultruvistics for example).

Anomalies are nice because you get more resources form a single tile. Watch out for those that also have happiness bonuses, those are especially nice.

Following that, sometimes you'll have the choice between more of a single resource. In early game, the priority goes as follow:

Vaulters : Industry>Food=Science>Dust
Broken Lords : Industry>Dust>Science (then transition to dust when you've reacehd Era III and researched both Dust-producing techs)
Ardent Mages : Industry>Science=Dust>Food
Cultists: Industry>Dust=Science>Food
Necrophages: Industry>Food>Dust>Science

I don't have enough playing experience for other factions.

Generally you never want to be really lacking in any resources.

Lack of food will mean you'll start lagging behind after the first 20 turns as your city won't have as many working populations and districts

Lack of industry puts you at a disadvantage from th start as your building aren't up as fast

Lack of Science will seriously hamper you at turn 25-30 as you begin lacking buildings to construct. You don't really give a shit as Necros, mind, as all you really want to do with your cities is shit out necrodrones at a fast pace.

Lack of dust has more impact for some factions and less for other.
It's a death sentence as Broken Lords, as it means your cities don't grow and your troops can't heal.
It's a hamstring for Ardent Mages as your pillars and spells aren't as available, making you miss on table-turning abilities in combat and the significant resource boost of pillars.
>>
>>123670219
cont.

For other factions (except Roving Jews, but I don't have much play experience with them), lack of dust is more of a nuisance, as it means you don't have the means to get extra luxury or strategic resources or to buyout a building in a pinch. In other words, It limits your options, but not as badly as the other resources.

Can AI drakken force me into agreements?
>>
>>123672470
Yes it can.

I actually have a story about that.

I was playing with two of my mates. One of them, playing Vaulters, coveted a region, and was about to settle it.

The turn before he could settle, a drakken settler showed up. Friend spent his few earnings in influence to declare war on him and drive him off his expansion.
The next turn, the AI attacked and destroyed my friend's settler, forced my friend to sign a truce and pay him a tribute in Dust, AND settled the region.
Because going from Truce to War is appallingly expansive, my mate had it all in the way inside his butt, having lost most of his influence, the region he wanted along with its settler, the ability to retake that region in the near future and his dignity.

We laughed on for ten minutes straight.

You start on science terrain, you've got boosted science buildings unlocked from the start. You should be unlocking new tech faster than you can build the improvements.

Could be the Ardent Mages outclassed him, from what he wrote he hasn't had the best start, and that has definitely come and bit him back. No food means his city is probably more shit than the mage's. Broken Lords can be good at science if they have the opportunity to complete their quest early, or simply if the started in a tundra or expanded in a glacial region.

>>123683602
Sounds to me that you got shafted on your start.
I'd advise tinkering with the world generation preset in detail. Putting many rivers and anomalies alleviates the problem, and since most factions on the map get them balance won't be much more of an issue.

For your current game, I don't really know to be honest. Try to recover by exploring ruins in hopes of finding dust, or quests that give you technologies. You should have scouted all the neighboring regions with your starting units by now, so try to expand to the one that looks the most promising for your current situation.

For every races, expanding turn 20 (AFTER setting your empire plan and boosters) is sign of a good and healthy start. You should plan your build order accordingly.

Also, your build order should be something like

Founder's Memorial
Mill Foundry
Public Library/Granary
Borough
Tech I building/settler
Tech I building/unit
Borough

Or something to that effect.
>>
Goddamn he's normally not this expansive

The 3 cities at turn 30 is good but by no means essentials, up to hard AI. It also depends on your start, your first expand, how you're doing score wise and relative to your neighbors.
The only golden rule I follow is
-Start by Mill Foundry
-Expand at Turn 20.

3 by turn 41, ideally. One every 21 turns - new one just after setting the next empire plan.
But that rate of relentless expansion is only needed for Serious and above difficulty. You can win with a dozen cities with a bit of luck: if they are good regions with lots of anomalies/resources. Then you can just turtle up. Best way to turtle up is to ally with a Drakken - he won't betray you and the dragons make for great meatshields.

robots left over from the endless, most likely to assist in all scientific/construction procedures considering their dependence

basically, the virtual/concrete war happens, and all endless on auriga die. only two powerful robots are spared, the rest shut down/have no orders so powersave/die while defending their concrete masters or from collateral damage

the queen and the unspoken are eventually these two robots, the queen being trapped dead center inside a building at least a hundred feet diameter with no external contact at all, presumably she was the physical ai running an important city/test/massive scientific storage

she gets pissed and crazy because she has no contact for so long, the same happens for the unspoken, because he cannot talk, and is fucking massive, presumably close to in size of a guardian from his few descriptions
i dont believe they mention if their insanity is because of one another, but they both do work together under her order at this point, and he has no way to relay external orders at all

eventually her insanity lets her broadcast her "thoughts" over larger and larger range, her thoughts being her ai processes

this both "wakes up" many undamaged robots, and drives a certain few insane, with part of their ai overwritten with the queens (the basis story of many cult heroes)

they go on a crusade to repair/salvage their fallen comrades while in turn destroying all concrete imagery they find, since those were their abandoned masters
>>
>>123691761
MASSIVEPOST2
they find their numbers two few since they no longer create themselves (just repair/combine broken ones) they turned to native species subjugation
in the beginning they use their religion and force to convert peoples, the faithful being the boring humanoids that look very much like cultists (cyborg questionable but unlikely) theoretically and likely, the veiled figured on the fanatic unit, and the preacher are "humans" (we dont know species)
that along with every single mook shown in the quests. they also convert lesser native species, but the only pictured ones thus far have been human, gauran, and urces

the most concerning part of the cultists has been their evolution over time, specifically in their quest
while they do "peacefully" pacify people to their cults, they are a warlike people, and obviously very capable with their limited numbers, made doubly so by their faction equipment. Their main form of conversion is by using influence, which shows the natives that they actually give better lives, the fact that it isn't actually slavery at all, and a silver robot tongue.
essentially the cultists are a successful and religious robotic version of the mongol empire with the khan's replaced by an immortal queen

as the quest progresses we slowly learn one somewhat upsetting thing though
the queen has learned how to build objects that not only overwrite robot ai, but can overwrite human brain patterns

Most of your defense against espionage comes in the form of buildings. There is a flat rate at which you catch enemy spies whenever they try to sabotage somthing or whatever, which increases due to these buildings, city happiness and the abilities of the governor of the city. It can go up to 100%. You can also attempt to flush a spy out, which decreases the city's production, but doubles the rate at which you catch enemy spies, and can catch inactive spies, too.
I never got too big into espionage, so I mostly only know about how to defend against it.

>>123701761
>What mechanics

>>
>>123701761
He's playing Broken Lords. Much of their gameplay is centered around generating dust.

You eventually come to a point in the game you can afford to buy two populations per turn, and buyout the Borough. Your city basically grows by one district per turn, and you generate more and more dust every turn because of the extra population and tile exploitation. It gets fucking ridiculous. I pretentiously call it the Singularity. It happens for every race, eventually, but the broken lords can have it sooner rather than later.

>>123702832
Get a small force of three stalwarts up, get the quest started. Expand turn 20.
Start with a focus on Industry. If you have the guardian DLC, try to snipe Museum of Auriga for extra dust and science. Industrail megapole is nice but not essential. Also, plan ahead to snitch the Glorious Father on Era IV, for a building giving +100% dust generation on happy cities.

Early game, you plop your third expand not to late (by turn 50 I'd say). Focus on Industry until you have researched :

-Prisoners, Slaves and Volunteers
-Dust Alchemy
-Dust Refinery

and have the mean to reduce industry and/or buyout costs via the empire plan.

Then switch your population to Dust.

The rest of the game is just managing that sweet, sweet Dust until you end up in the Singularity situation I described above. Broken Lords units are fantastic at playing a defensive game, provided you keep up with their equipment and your regions thrive on their own.

I'd wager Drakken can play comfy too, though I haven't tried them.

How to Necrophages?
>>
>>123699787
Cultists are the ultimate comfy.
>>
>>123704982

For resources management

0-Kill shit to get food
1-Generate Industry
2-Shit out necrodrones
3-Shit out boroughs
4-Back to step 1

For Strategy :

1-Locate weakest and/or closest neighbor
2-Throw your troops at his until he doesn't have troops anymore.
3-Steal his cities, eventually kill him.
4-Back to step one

And for Tactics

1-Deploy Necrodrones en masse
2-Overwhelm enemy through number, solid damages and spreading DOTs
3-Repeat if necessary

Having one or two proliferator will tip the balance in your favor by converting his slain troops into chumps you can throw away while your more valuable necrodrones do the real damage.

On paper this sounds simple, but actually executing these rather simple plans does take some skill
>>
Who's the easiest to learn in Endless Legend after Broken Lords?
>>
>>123705735
Cultist has you do a wild goose chase over the entire map, our definition of comfy may vary
>>
>>123706081
I'd say Wild Walkers. Their main gimmicks are seeing the position of other factions' units in the FoW in your regions and any adjacent ones and getting more industry from forest tiles and generally focusing on industry, which it enhances an aspect of the core gameplay instead of revamping it in a major way and/or adding extra fiddly mechanics.

Their faction quest is also possibly the easiest to complete.

>>
>>123740770
move some workers there, research the industry techs earlier.
best case scenario, vaulters settle in large enchanted forests. factions that get +FIDSI to tiles actually weigh the tile type quite a bit more than normal
a nice sized enchanted forest is alot better than a few anomalys here or there

as vaulters, you're generally going to have less/smaller armies, since you dont need much defensive force, so you have free production to go toward buildings. most likely you're either settling wrong, or your tech choices are wrong
>>
How come as cultist it doesnt let you see how much it will take to convert a minor faction

It drive me nuts
>>
>>123740770
I presume you're in the early game? If so, make sure that the first (or possibly second) thing you research is Mill Foundry. That should be the first thing you build in every city past your capital.
Pacify villages. Each village will give you one citizen to play with. Citizens can, of course, be reassigned to emphasize production.
And, of course, when you found a city try to found it nearby a bunch of anomolies. Probably prioritse food, then production, then science. Anything else is nice, but not super necessary.
Remember, as vaulters you can just teleport your armies around, so you don't need as many as other empires.
This probably isn't great advice, but I don't really fully understand the issue.

Meanwhile the dosh lords are complaining to me about ongoing pillaging.

I'm still in the second era, so i'm not sure if the AI is just cheating, or if they understand that it has to be me since none of the other factions can get privateers until era 4
>>
>>123741780
most likely the former then, cheating or possibly a bug
iirc, cultists that use privateers to raze a city dont get stockpiles, so theoretically, the reason the ai knows you're doing it, is because you're actually siphoning off the reward and they can "see" who is taking it
but that would be a bullshit reason, and i more presume bug, oversight, or cheating

play a game or two, on an easier difficulty, with 4-6 players on a lesser number of continents map
the tutorial leaves out ALOT of small stuff you'll have to end up just learning by playing, especially tech based things
theres two choices for "beginning" player factions
Vaulters = easy because you easily get a tech advantage, they better defend with lesser armies, and they can eventually ignore the big negative of winter
Wild Walkers = easy story quest victory, no spoilers but a few of their goals are just basic "you would do this while playing", that and they have a large production boost, so while you might not be ahead in tech, you can build what you research, or army up MUCH faster than other races

id say vaulters, but thats just because their units are less squishy

play one of them once, and you're going to end up answering alot of your own questions, even if you lose

So I never played Civ IV since my brothers and others who played it at the time told me it was shit and the worst Civ. I had played Civ I, II, and III before, then stopped playing for a long gap before getting V, but I'm kind of tired of V right now. Anyway, nowadays I've seen a few people who not only like IV, but say it's the best one, which is the exact opposite of what I had heard before. It's on sale now for like 5 bucks. Is Civ IV worth 5 bucks to get and try out if I've already played V a lot?

They could make an organic civ. Like they could make one that uses food production to "grow" new buildings. Like they build using biomass or something.

I think Automatons and Sowers using industry to grow population, and not needing food, since they're robots, and need to build new robots, would be an interesting change.

Unfortunately, the most vocal detractors of that game are family, so I can't break contact. I should have known though, since I'm pretty sure they have shit taste in vidya (They wrote Super Mario Galaxy off as awful, worst mario game ever shit just from the first level).

Different than Civ V, they're both good games, but Civ V compared to Civ IV feels like a Catan-style boardgame compared to actual 4X. Not to mention the specturm of mods, some of which remove shit that made the original flawed, most of which add a lot.

Should have read that quest text. the narrator, a authority figure in the Broken Lords hierarchy, hates the figurative guts of Martin Ildan de Suluzzo, and the whole scheme is designed to get rid of him.

Speaking of that, am I the only one who found that quests were a fantastic addition of EL and should be expanded upon ?

God, a hybrid between EL's quest system and Total War Attila's politics, on top of everything already present in EL, would be the tightest shit.

This is why I don't reccomend the Dosh Lords as a first faction to try out to peple. Well that and the fact that they pretty much ignore two segments of FIDSI management.
You'll either lvoe or hate how they play and if you lvoe it, the other factions tend to feel less enjoyable afterwards.

That said, I'm off to play some custom Lords now.

Bought the Endless Collection last night for 33 corollaries. No buyer's remorse yet, have 6 hours logged in endless legend. Had to cut myself off a minute ago because I have homework and shit I need to do.

Holy shit, endless legend is great. I'm having a ton of fun in it, more so than Civ 5.

First game right now, wild walkers, endless mode. 200 turns in. Have the west coast of a huge continent covered, so that's around 4 regions total. Subjugated all of the natives and assimilated some nigger dwarves in my homeland into my armies.

This game is awesome. Holy shit. Anyone on the fence should definitely purchase it. It's certainly worth it.
>>
>>123794312
Ouch, that's a stinker.

Well, guess you'll remember it for your next games.

But if you're at the point where your heroes can negate winter effects, you shouldn't be too far from singularity and it shouldn't matter that much.

>>123794301
I enjoy Dosh Lords for being easy and comfy to play, as well as competitive, but I still enjoy other factions for their unique mechanics.

Ardent Mages, for one, have really neat mechanics that take a bit of guile to get a grip of, and, holy shit, the battles

They're so TACTICAL.

That sounds like it would get pretty obnoxious towards the end, when you have a whole bunch of cities.

It could work on an unsustainable farming thing or something, it slowly drains the productivity of the tiles you exploit, then those tiles need time to naturally recover on their own, which means moving the city so it no longer exploits those tiles.

Maybe a technology could give better farming techniques or whatever to lessen this effect.

Roving Clans should have a way to move around boroughs without packing the whole city up.

Mored FIDS but most importantly a leveled up district produces bonus Approval. Level up enough districts and any city hits max Approval = loads of FIDS bonuses.

The economy game slows down but combat stays the same, particularly strategic resources come in slower, making well equipped armies rarer, and giving you an incentive to keep your good units alive since you cant keep pumping them out.

Early on whenever you don't have a more pressing city/region improvement to build and don't dip below content approval as a result of the new borough.
Much the same later on, squeeze one into the construction queue whenever you can, by then the approval shouldn't be a concern thanks to the city improvements and luxury boosters unless you built a conga line of boroughs.

Besides the raised FIDS yield and the eventual net gain in approval, leveled up borough tiles also get bonuses hefty from some of the later era city improvements.

I'm getting really wary of playing now since I don't know how impactful Guardians is (people tell me it's downright bad, others that it's not much) and Shadows (everyone tells me it's excellent but I'm really wary at the espionage mechanic being just another layer of artificial difficulty adding a new way for the AI to wreck me).

And now Divinity Dragon Commander is on sale and I'm really considering refunding Shadows to get the dosh to buy it

So what I'm saying is, can anyone spoonfeed me some details about the EL DLC and their impact?

So far I think I'm doing pretty well, my ship fleets are nice and powerful, my tech is coming along nicely and all that. Just got a couple questions.

1: What are the color-coded circles around stars and why are the enemy circles so much bigger than mine?
2: Are the heroes worth the dust per turn? They provide decent enough bonuses for fledgling colonies, but they don't seem to be too useful in the long-term.

I had a thought that Venice, to make them a little stronger in Multiplayer and in the hands of the AI, could be given something like the ability to buy settlers, but only buy them, and in increasing amounts. And maybe only settling puppeted cities, sort keep in line with a trading colony and being thematically appropriate

Like the first settler would be the standard 500, but the next would cost 750, the next 1000 and so on.

My thought being that they'd still be restricted in terms of city number relative to other Civs, but still able to remain competetive as opposed to their usual "conquered by other players/AI" they normally suffer.

It'd also allow a Venice player a bit more flexibility, so that when you get your first free MoV, should CS nearby be too distant, or too crap, or undesireable for whatever reason, you could pop your MoV for Influence, and then use the gold to buy a settler.

Civ 5 is so easy, like once you hit medieval you can basically build every wonder before the AI, I mean you miss a few early like the great library

I'll probably have to move the artificial difficulty up to like prince just for a challenge
>>
So I bought endless legend and am a bit disappointed in their combat system, was expecting something a little more different. Does it get better the longer you play or get more different than civ as you go? Also can you only win through your race's quest?

I've been getting back into Civ V as of late, and since Brave New World it really feels like a game where you can dominate the first 90% and then totally and irredeemably fuck up in the final 30 minutes

>Be Babylonia, going for sci victory
>Completely dominate scientifically; 7+ academies, university with 15+ adjacent jungle tiles, every science-boosting building and social policy possible within reason, every science-boosting wonder, constantly doing research agreements with the neighboring cavemen
>Set my spy to capital city and buy anti-spy buildings to assfuck peons who try to steal from me

If you're looking for more depth from the combat do a couple of things:

1) Play on a harder difficulty. This will make the AI harder to defeat and you'll need to spec your units more carefully and do more manual battles the higher you go

2) Play the Ardent Mages, the only race with the ability to cast spells during combat, which makes it more engaging than just watching units hit each other.

3) Also if you haven't already go into the game creation settings and find battle speed and set it to fast or higher. Makes animations take less than an eternity to play out.

Concerning victory conditions, there's 9 of them:

Score: After a set number of turns (depending on game speed 200-600) empire with highest score wins.

Expansion: Control 80% of the planet or more.

Elimination: Destroy all other empires.

Supremacy: Control the capital city of every empire in the game

Economic: Produce a grand total of "x" amount of dust over the course of the game.

Scientific: Research any 5 of the 6 techs in the final era.

Wonder: Build the Temple of the Earth's core.

Quest: Complete your faction questline.

Diplomatic: Generate "x" diplomatic points over the course of the game.
>>
>>123844413

Don't think so, since the only way to trade cities is to demand them from an empire in exchange for a truce.

If I recall there is a mod around which lets you trade cities whenever, although the AI is obviously very reluctant to let go of them.

this is all stereotypical obviously but

if you want a unit with high defenses, you get an infantry
if you want a unit with high damage, you get a range

theres not much that the current cavalry do, that isn't done better by another unit. that being said all of the minor faction cavalry have pretty boss assimilation bonuses

Try to get the Call of Duty audience.

Remove tech progression and make the game start at the modern era.
The only map available is Earth
You can only play as the country you live in (wouldn't want to confuse foreign people with foreign names and military units)
Remove Expansion, Exploitation and Exploration, rename the genre "x".
The only victory condition is domination.
Remove all strategy from warfare (no combat bonuses from terrain or flanking, no great generals, all units deal equal amount of damage)
Remove happiness, food, gold, culture, faith, production and science
All units have the same amount of turns for build time, and no resources are required
Remove wonders and city/tile improvements

I could go on, but this has dragged long enough.

You generate political capital from others making deal with you and from buildings, and you can spend it on making deals with others. Deals are generally agreements that boost some of your stats (production of satellites or something). You can also use the political capital to pursue a sort of 'government' tree which is seperate from your social policies.
Resource trading between empires is done via trade routes and you can see the resources that you'd trade away and gain when you form the route.

The only thing that bugs me is that you can't control what you get when the enemy surrenders in a war (how well you did in a war determines how many cities will be surrendered in the peace talks; you can't set your own terms).

I honestly prefer it to vanilla diplomacy overall.
>>
>>123845834

>Don't think so, since the only way to trade cities is to demand them from an empire in exchange for a truce.

That can't be true, can it? I'm in vanilla BNW on latest patch, and I've managed to buy cities from other civs during peacetime. Demands for even small cities are usually pretty ridiculous though.
>>
>>123850690
I don't think they were talking about Civ 5, but to answer your question, AI is super stingy about cities outside of warfare. I've only once ever bought a city in peace, and that was for like 8000 gold for a pop 1 city settled the last turn
>>
So since everyone talks about how great the broken lords are in EL, should I wait before trying them in case I like them too much and don't want to play someone else?
>>
What do I need to be doing to succeed on endless difficulty EL?

Only thing I can do consistently on it is Walker Wonder victory. I managed a military victory once, but I think that was mostly luck since even with similar strength armies at a similar time (6 T2 Strategic units by around T38-45) most of the time the AI still seems to have better stats and equal or greater unit numbers.

On Endless do science and economic victory types tend to require conquering 1-2 AI first to get ahead, or is 4-5 cities fine?

>>123853647

Civilization 2 already had a male and a female version for each Civ, even with fictional characters (Shakala is the female leader of the Zulus), so doing that isn’t something new nor exclusive to BE in the Civilization franchise. Firaxis is pretty open about how they care about diversity and they also used it as a rule in Civ V (half of G&K leaders are female) and in Xcom. In Xcom 2 even the new basic enemies that are “humans” will have both male and female versions of them, they made sure the new characters have a diversity in race and nationality (after all, it’s a global effort) and even the aliens get their fair share of females (the berseker is female and the snake like enemy that I forgot the name).

Since BE have fictional leaders and didn’t have historical barrier limiting the amount of possible female leaders, they decided to go with a 50% rule, which also make sense since each day we have more woman in leadership positions, a diverse future in this sense just reflect where things are going.

If you don’t like this, do yourself a favor and stop playing Firaxis games because diversity is a thing they value and there’s nothing wrong with that. Exactly how having female leaders is a bad thing? In historical Civ you still can argue that there isn’t as much female leaders in history as there’s male but in a fictional game set in the future, why not? Even if they have a cool idea for a female leader that will leave the game with more female than male, why they shouldn’t go with it? It’s that hard to play as a female, do you feel less male when you do it?

It’s Firaxis decision, it’s their product, it’s a story they are telling. If they think diversity is something that fit in their games they should go for it and so they did, we decide if we gonna buy it or not.

I've got no problem with the idea of female heads of state depicted in civ games in the modern ages and after because that really happens. What I don't really like is being expected to believe that there would be many women in a combat role fighting against the greatest threat mankind has ever faced in its history; fucking ayys.

It's different for aliens though, we can't say how strong a female berserker should be, that is genuinely entirely up to firaxis. There are many examples of females in the animal kingdom that are sometimes insanely more physically powerful that their male counterparts.

The thing is we know this isn't true for humans, women almost invariably pale in comparison to men in their combat ability and physical strength. We know their minds just aren't wired for combat, they panic easily and get extremely emotional. This is just in examples when women have been in fights with/around men, how can I be expected to believe a woman wouldn't absolutely lose the fucking plot at the sight of a sectopod or a mechtoid? You could argue points like "oh what about those famous female russian ww2 snipers" but that doesn't change much. Think about it, being a sniper, ideally you'd never be seen and you would be FAR away from targets, you never heard of any female russian soldiers being successful on the actual frontline in close quarters urban combat. That's where combat ability really counts, being able to perform under pressure in ranges where you can see the whites of their eyes and not through a scope.

>>
Are you honestly saying that somehow their decision to make 50% of the leaders female is connect to gameplay issues? That’s your point, really? How? Is it more expensive to make female leaders? Does it take more time than males? Do you think they sit all day during production thinking about diversity and forgot to work in the game? This is the same kind of “argument” that Sarkeesian would do, trying to put blame where there’s none and link things that have nothing to do with each other.

Civ 2 didn’t have unique animations for each leader nor was voiced, so it was a lot cheaper to do as many leaders as they wanted per civilization. Now there’s a considerable cost attached to each leader they design. Making 2 leaders for each civilization would double the cost so it probably will never happen. Also, I doubt most Civ fans or even Firaxis would want fictional leaders on the historical civ, I doubt anyone miss “Shakala”, so it would be kind of a dumb move to try to have a male and a female for each civ again, there’s a reason they dropped it in the first place.

You’re assuming that Firaxis have this police because someone pushed their agenda on them, which is very unlikely considering that Firaxis policy on diversity is older than all this BS that we see now with feminazis vs gamergates. Also, I don’t see difference between Feminists forcing their agenda on a studio and gaters forcing their own agenda. Feminists want more diversity, gaters don’t want it, both are trying to force the studio to fall under their own world view. What you are asking for isn’t different from what people like Sarkeesian ask for, you just happen to follow a different world view but are doing the exactly same thing, pushing agenda.

If other empires are being cunts and keep trashing your villages, then yes, leave them there for defense.

If you're going on the offensive, either send all your converts en masse to fight in the holy war, or sell them if you need a quick dust fix.

Overall your city looks fine I guess. Just keep converting but don't rely on converted units to do all the heavy lifting. They're kitted out with iron and can't be retrofitted into anything better, so get your capital to start training up some royal legionnaires to bring the pain.

I was ultra hyped for Beyond Earth, pirated it as soon as possible, and prepared to marathon it.

At first it seemed great, and my only problem was that I didnt know what the techs do, its not like in Civ5 where it all makes sense, you can tell what The Wheel or Horseback Riding would do and which comes first.
Fine, the AI is passive, the game is easy, I am not used to the buildings and techs, its cool. Enough training, lets quit and try a real game.

Second time, up the difficulty, lets go! Oh, I get the same choices and quests. The same decisions, and they are still stupidly one sides.
Of course I want aliens to not hurt my caravans, why would I ever pick the other one?
Techs still confusing and there is still no clear reason to pick one over the other, just randomly click stuff.
AI still doesnt challenge me, doesnt appear to want to win, just to exist.

Quit that game too, so much for marathon, go to bed.
The next morning start a third game, play some, quit it.
A week later start a multiplayer game, play some, talk about how shit it is, quit it.

>women in fighter planes, bombers, marksmen, field medic
Again those are ways of contributing to combat without actually being in close range to the enemy, those are very impersonal ways of fighting in a war. What I'm saying is that it's infantry that can perform under pressure and engage an enemy that wins wars, and the war winners are almost always men. Women engaging in direct combat is extremely rare in reality.

>its been a long time since war was about decapitating people, chopping off arms and brute forcing yourself upon the enemy.
Not really, if anything war is more frightening and violent than it has ever been. Soldiers are still using house to house clearing tactics from world war 2 in some parts of the world as mortars and 500lb bombs are being dropped around them. It is extremely rare to see a female combatant in these sort of situations. Things would be even more dire if it were a technologically advanced race of aliens bombarding the entire planet.

That's everything wrong with the market for this generation. Companies just make squeals of a good game/movie etc. and expect it to sell well based solely on the nostalgia and hype factor. Inadvertently it means that they're either too lazy to innovate, or afraid to do so because it might alienate the old fan base, resulting in bad sequels that kill off the franchise. It happened to SMAC (if you count BE as the supposed sequel), Starcraft II, Diablo III, the new Halos, and arguably FO4. I'm willing to bet that Galactic Battlefront II will go through the same fate.

Cities can only be infiltrated if the enemy has vision over it (this goes both ways if you're trying to plant spies in enemy cities). The best way to avoid that is to close off your borders to all neighboring factions. You'll also want to upgrade your watch towers and/or get detection towards the later stages of the game when stealthed units become available.

Prevention is the best cure. If enemy spies are already in your city though, you'll have to do as >>123860834 suggested.

How much have the expansions changed EL? As in, is it still almost always the best to build two tile wide lanes as cities? Because that was really fucking up my enjoyment of the game.
>>
>>123877613
Triangles as seen here are actually slightly more efficient
>>123812586
While a shitty looking lane city will always have 4 level 1 districts, a triangle will only have 3.
>>
>>123877613
>As in, is it still almost always the best to build two tile wide lanes as cities
Why would this be the case? How do you even get to the conclusion that this is the best in the first place?

City building mechanics haven't changed. Triangles remain optimal if you're only concerned about district levels and not covering resources/anomalies/working around ruins.
>>
>>123878076
It was certainly true a few months ago, which is why I'm asking.
>>
>>123878250
It wasn't true a year ago when I first started playing, man, and it hasn't been true for any point between then. Triangles > lanes.
>>
>>123878608
You don't get it; it isn't about the shape you fucking sperg. It's about the fact that there's a definite most optimal way to build shit. That sucks for 4x games, because they are supposed to be randomized and different each playthrough. If you build all of your cities in the same shape it takes one aspect of variance and change and effectively makes it a static part of gameplay.

I don't fucking care if it's triangles, lanes, stars or a luffa sponge you mongoid.

No, if you don't explain what you're annoyed about, I most certainly won't get it. This is true of most conversation, Anon: you must have common difficulties with it given how it frustrated it seems to have made you.

Sticking to shapes remains important, but primarily for the happiness boost. You can work around it by focusing on techs that give alternate ways to raise that, but district planning remains the chief way.
>>
>>123878860
You'd be surprised how stagnant and static district building is IRL, but just like IRL, in-game you can't always make the most optimal pattern and must create something else to match the situation.
>>
Are there any techs in endless legend that look good on paper but are actually shit?
I usually don't take armor or weapon techs, the one that lets you parley and the marketplace. I get it lets you get more heroes, but I never seem to have enough dust anyways.
>>
>>123880852
>I usually don't take armor or weapon techs
Good choice, the first era ones are awful and you can trade the other with the AI for nothing
>the one that lets you parley and the marketplace.
Oh shit nigger what are you doing. Parley is fucking great so you can pacify your whole region in one go instead of wasting dust/industry on rebuilding villages or bribing minor factions. And heroes are fucking important, you need at least one for your army and one for your biggest city, the more the better.
>>
>>123881086
I like how endless legend has a lot of strategy and doesn't hold your hand, atleast compared to civ, but fuck, I feel like I'm drowning sometimes. Even the Vaulters give me a headache, so that just leaves me the wild walkers.

Move City is good. It allows you to get resources without creating a new city when you find a more suitable place.

It also saves you from having a common frontier.
Too bad their units are f-tier so expect to get your shit pushed in when war eventually breaks out.
>>
>>123882217

Are the drakken and broken lords considered "turtling" factions? I like their early, strong infantry units, but the lack of a faction ranged unit kinda turns me off.

The Ardent Mages, and I suppose the Necrophages as well, have armies that are too balanced I'd say. I get that they're kinda fragile, so are the mages meant to be a glass cannon or what?
>>
>>123882581
>so are the mages meant to be a glass cannon

Yes because they can pretty much kill anything effortlessly.
>>
>>123882709
So by the late game, would it be better to assimilate a group that gives me a strong frontline unit, or take some armor techs that make the warlocks last longer? I don't see the zealots ever being anything less than amazing really.
>>
>>123882542

>>123882542
Broken Lords are one of the most premier rush factions. Their metagame strategy is getting a couple Bishops, tier 2 weapons and the 6 army size tech and steamrolling. This is because they can amplify their start by buying Population faster than Food can ever go and they generate a fuckton of Dust naturally to typically rush buy one or two tier 1 buildings and get to training a few troops where other factions can not. If you start immediately next to a neighbor a hero + 4 troops + their free tier 1 tech armor could wipe an early AI with a good start.
>>
How is EL for a casual Civ player?
>>
>>123885530
Fresh.
You can play it casually, but if you don't do the tutorial, you might feel overwhelmed as fuck.
>>
>>123880852
First era weapons and armour can be useful if you want to rush your enemies. I've used them to quickly clear a continent before because the AI had its armies sent far away and the difference in power was enough to shift it in my favor.

>>123882581
Broken Lords' Dust Mage functions as a pseudo range unit. It's lying when it calls it support.

I'd go for Vaulters as best for turtling due to teleportation. Makes your home army far cheaper because you don't have to have one on each frontier.

>Guardians
The namesake is actually quite useless. I play on Serious and I think I've seen the AI build a Guardian once. Guardians themselves are fun and I think that they are a little undertested on the player side of strategies. There might be something there left unexplored in build orders. Aggressive factions/strategies often end the game in Age 3, and that's when the first Guardian is unlocked.

However, Guardians adds Era Wonders and global 'achievements' to each era which feel like core gameplay that was missing in the first. Legendary Deeds and Wonders are imo the best part of Guardians and worth a buy (on sale).

>Shadows
The new faction is fun as fuck and very underdog-ish. That being said I haven't seen a different faction use Spies but then again I haven't played too much yet since its release. I also haven't seen a Forgotten AI be a frontrunner yet (but once again low sample size). In the recent games I played Spying was often untouched. You often need spare heroes to spy and that sort of wealth doesn't often show up in Age 2-3 when you still could benefit from a general or more governors. That being said Espionage also feels like untested territory and maybe there is something there as I've never tried to spy with a non-Forgotten hero.

Pillage, however, is really cool mechanic and almost a must-have Tech for warmongers. It also gives the AI neutral armies and AIs themselves some bite.
>>
>>123888383
roving clan's unique things are a little boring and useless against the ai, so you're not really learning any new mechanics at all, you couldn't learn with another faction

and forgotten have the same problem broken lords have, they completely ignore one mechanic and replace it with another. Which is also not good for learning the game, just good for learning forgotten play

the ai is alot better now, its still a little retarded somtimes, but each faction acts different now, and is "in character" for their species

at its current price, id say its worth it for just against the ai. they have a good world built, and if you end up liking the lore, theres a story for each faction, along with alot of smaller blurbs here and there
iv got an insane civ5 playtime, and would say i like it more than EL overall, but EL looks better, and iv ended up playing each faction multiple times each. at the very least, you'd get one playthrough with every single faction out of it, even if its just for their story

get the vanilla game if you're really really unsure, but pretty much all of their dlc has been worth it, so the pack is a good thing

The only way you can stack too much is if you can no longer afford the strategics/industry/dust required to pump out ships at a reasonable pace. Tonnage is just there to put a limit on how strong your ships can be.

As for weapons, it's all rock paper scissors. I haven't played it in a while but I think Beam > Rockets > Kinetic > Beams?

That's probably completely wrong, but do some tooltip reading in-game and you should be able to figure it out. Everything has a direct counter to it, so check what weapons your enemy is putting on their ships and build whatever counters it.

Just tried picking up EL, and holy shit, do I have a lot to learn still. Really stunted myself a few times by not researching what seem to be required techs. Not sure how to really balance some of the dust/food/industry/science techs with the military and misc ones.
I feel like I'm chronically short on dust, and not only that, but my income fluctuates constantly; too much for me to account for.

One question, I was under the impression from the thread that there was no penalty to playing both tall and wide...but after shitting out 5 cities I realized that approval is affected by expansion. Is expansion the same as number of cities, or is it some kind of timer?

>>
>>123937127
Guardians aren't as cost-efficient as an army of regular units, but you get multiple units worth of effectiveness from a single reinforcement. Without the support general skill, you only get 2 reinforcements per turn and having one or both of those be guardians instead of regular units is quite strong.

Also, Skoros can heal an army to full, outside of combat, every few turns which is pretty nice.

they've essentially virtualized themselves, without knowing how nor how to control it, thus they're stuck in their suits until they can find a way to reverse the process, or gain more control over their new forms
>>
>>123944986
oh, and i would note i say "more lore" because theres two things that point to them being humanoid vs human
one is a picture of a pre cursed knight, kneeling before some sort of noble woman who seems reddish skinned, and her head looks somwhat reptilian
note that no skin on all of the knights pictured is shown, and she is barely visable

the other is hints along their story, its implying they are readily consuming humans that they easily obtained
some people believe that means the non noble of their faction, others think it just means the normal everyday non factioned humans that live on the planet, of which there are MANY, sisters of mercy being one of the larger groups

also note that for the most part, their armor is gender neutral, so the fact that that humanoid reptile woman wasn't armored, doesn't say much one way or another, just that she wasn't military

- Environment (Global Warming/Ice Age/etc): The previous entries did this already, with Civ V model it could be fun.

- Culture & Migrations: Your citizens don't have to take your shit, they migrate to other cities if unhappy or they want to culturally enrich them.

>Allied Victory: Everyone allied with the victor win. You can actually diplo your way to victory.
Would need to adjust how easy it is for someone weak to be friends with someone strong. Make the strong more willing to demand stuff from the weak, and punish them for not complying.
>MAD: You can't just spam nukes, too much of them and it's Game Over for everyone.
Dont like this one, you should combine it with...
>Environment (Global Warming/Ice Age/etc): The previous entries did this already, with Civ V model it could be fun.
Using too many nukes fucking up the climate would be great. You can have plains turn to deserts, all the grassland to tundra, tundra to snow, etc. Would need to tweak things so the game isnt over very soon after nuclear energy is discovered, like it is today, so this can actually be a thread.
>Culture & Migrations: Your citizens don't have to take your shit, they migrate to other cities if unhappy or they want to culturally enrich them.
I was so disappointed they didnt implement this. Unhappy cities shouldnt grow slower, instead they should just straight up have 1 citizen leave and go to the nearest happy city. This also gives another function to open borders, for example, and another strategy to play the game with, as well as making one-city-challenge more interesting.

The biggest thing for me, although I know its not happening, would be more unit trees.

>The biggest thing for me, although I know its not happening, would be more unit trees.

You should have four domains of units:
>infantry - the main bulk of your army, with promotions for fighting in X terrain.
>cavalry - faster and more expensive than infantry, with promotions for pillaging and flanking.
>ships - water units with promotions for mobility and healing.
>planes - cant see how these would exist in early game to be fair.
>siege - anti-city units with promotions against cities and fortified units.

All four of those domains should have 3 roles of units in them:
>scout - fast and weak, promotions for mobility, sight and fighting barbarians.
>heavy - slow and strong, the main unit for fighting, promotions for defense and raw strength.
>light - slow and weak, but ranged, a support unit, promotions for range and to deal extra damage against X domain.

And the idea is that if you take any X unit, you can upgrade it from turn 1 to turn 999, and it will still be a heavy infantry unit, or a light cavalry unit. It wont leave its domain and role, and wont lose its promotions like it sometimes happens in Civ5.
Just cant think of a way to handle planes, and the anti-aircraft promotions units should be able to get. Planes and mobile anti-air units would just have to be the exception, I guess. Any ideas?

I bought it earlier today and I've been playing it. Only got about 7 or so hours so far, but I'm liking it a lot. The setting is really nice, really Slavic.

I feel like the UI is a little clunky and could do with some more polish, but the core game mechanics are really good. A lot of people might be turned off by some of the rather unfair RNG, but I think that it works. It feels more like a Rogue-lite 4X game than something like Civ 5 or Endless Legend.

I think the replayability is gonna be pretty good because there's a decent selection of God's to choose between, and I'm not sure how easy it's going to be to secure my first win.

My suggestion is to give it a try, it's only $15. You've got 2 hours to get a refund, I think that if you're not getting into it by then, it's probably not for you.

I tried like five times, then took some time off to play other games, then played some random maps, then randoms on hard... Goblin swarm darters FTW.

The trick seems to be find your race's good unit and spam it as hard as possible... Yeti in case of that one mission.
>>
>>123965598
I think AoW3 was just poorly balanced in the unit department.
Initially, just swarming cheap units was too strong, and after patches, just building tough units is too strong.
And there arent enough buildings to build, so you do end up making units for the sake of having something in production very fast.

Feels like there should have been more techning to do, its honestly Heroes III tier city building.

It's probably the most praised song in video game history, you are a fool if you don't consider it when you think of soundtracks in 4x games.

I really appreciate how some of the tracks are remixes of endless space ones

and I could swear I heard the force theme in there
