You can be all classes in XIV. You have to pick a (combat or magic) class to start, and get that to level ten, then you can join any guild and unlock secondary classes which you change to just by changing the weapon you have equipped.

There are three gathering classes (fishing, mining, and botanist) and a bunch of crafting classes. You level them by harvesting/crafting instead of fighting monsters.

You can be any class at (mostly) any time. There's also class specific quests and stories (yes, even for crafting & gathering).

Any progress though in the main storyline requires a fighting class.

I actually never looked at those weapon's SBs, but you're right, it is good. I'd still prefer a generally usable high MAG weapon, but if it doesn't work out that SB would be a nice compensation. I'm willing to dump 100 Mythril into that banner.

First thing you should do is overview your adventuring primer in the help section of the menu when playing ("-" on numpad, second page).

You'll also want to start the Records of Eminence by going to the Quests section and choosing First Step Forward and talking to the relevant NPC depending on where you are (Rolandienne in Southern San d'Oria (G-10), Isakoth in Bastok Markets (E-11), Fhelm Jobeizat in Windurst Woods (J-10), Eternal Flame in Western Adoulin (H-11) ).

You're first goal is to level and you can do that by choosing RoE Quests for the area you're in as well as looking at books outside and choosing a page.

Once you get a feel of how the game plays, talk to a Gate Guard and get a mission. Missions are how you play the story of the game. This should be enough to get you going.

Does spending mythril after losing a fight completely refresh RW uses or just set them back to what they were at at the start of the stage? She has the highest Mind and she has great default SB, but healing doesn't scale that well with Mind and there are tankier white mages with better unique SBs. She does get the best mileage out of Diaga though, and she's the first white mage to get her MC2 (pretty soon, I might add) so she is a great choice. Because of this she's probably the best white mage if you don't have a character relic for another one though Eiko can be useful if you want Shellga but don't want to use an ability slot on it.

The S-Tier White Mages are Mog, Relm, Aerith, and Y'shtola, the S Tier White Mages. All four of these characters are here because they offer important variety. Relm and Aerith are the only White Mages to have access to Black Magic 3, White Magic 5, and Summon 4+, hitting almost all of the key utility tiers in all three skillsets (missing out on Death, Break only in Black Magic, and Relm misses Odin as well). Mog has Black 3, White 4 (yes, an S Tier White Mage without White 5 access!), Dragoon 2 (not really relevant), and Dancer 5, in addition to excellent defensive stats for a character limited to level 65. Y'shtola has Black 3, Support 4, and White 5. The key thing you'll notice about all four of these White Mages is that they have multiple valuable utility ability sets available to them, while the A Tier White Mages have only one each. That is what sets them above the A Tier White Mages.

Y'shtola is S tier because of stoneskin, not because she can randomly use (backrow staff damage) breakdowns on top of white magic for the 1/1000 fights you somehow can't fit the breakdowns you need on an actual support character. And why does white 5 access come into play at all? The only white 5 ability is holy, which is just a much more expensive and lower-use version of diaga which already hits plenty hard enough. That and the new abyss ability I guess, but that one is so far down the road and its just reraise.

Because he has good stats and a versatile ability- and equipment set. At any rate, hitting damage cap with physical abilities isn't easy and some recent mechanics changes in the Japanese game have made it even more difficult by nerfing buff stacking. Having access to both Steal Power and spellblades allows Bartz to hit damage cap a lot easier than other thieves or support characters.

The thing is that he can do it more consistently than the other characters, what with having great abilities and a wide arrange of weapons. The chances that he'll be able to equip your best weapon for each realm are pretty high. Compare it to Cloud, who can only equip swords, dagger and katanas and can't use self-boosting abilities like Steal Power.

I was wrecking shit with Bartz in the FFV Event with a shitty 6* Hayate Bow at the back row, very few characters can do that.

The gameplay is probably the best part of XIII, though that's not saying much. If they slowed the game down just a bit and removed auto-battle, you'd have a fantastic battle system.

The story is kinda mediocre. Most of the cast just isn't interesting. Fang and Sazh are cool. The rest are pretty boring, and every word out of Hope's mouth makes me want to strangle the little bastard.

Really, all they would have had to do to salvage the game was make that moment where the game actually opens up and you can do shit and choose who your party is happen much, much sooner.

When I got to that point, I was actually having fun, and the battle system finally opened up, as you could strategize and shit.

See the problem with the system is that it makes the player feel like it is somewhat deep and their choices are impactful, but its really very shallow.

The most the player is ever involved is switching paradigms (at the right times) and while that has its merits, it doesn't save the system. Auto battle, as shitty as it seems, is a necessary evil. It blinds the player from the reality that their inputs literally don't matter. You find the weakness of the enemy, and exploit it - no amount of user inputs of skills in a particular order or timing will make any kind of difference. Auto battle once weaknesses are discovered is 95% as effective as any manual input, and that's where the system falls flat.

Its literally all about setting up and switching to the right paradigms at the right times.

You really need to clean up the XIV section because it has only gotten one expansion so far. It would be much more accurate to say that it gets content patches often, or at least it did. This guide also needs more information on XI. Also, mentioning the 3D remake of IV would be nice to have for those that want 3D models and voice acting. VIII also has a PC port.

Yes, that's the entire problem with auto-battle. It's too good.

I feel like auto-battle was put in so that players could keep up with the pace of battles, as they want battles to be intense and fast paced.

They either needed to slow things down, or reduce the number of characters you control so you can actually keep up. Which XIII-2 and LR did, but they had their own problems.

I think it's pretty clear they want more action oriented gameplay, and the series has been going that direction even going all the way back to the ATB system. It's just that you can't have fast paced gameplay and also control a party of characters.

The biggest issue in most FF games is actually not the battle system, but the enemies.

They usually allow for all sorts of strategy, but it's meaningless when most enemies can just be killed by basic attacks and you have bosses that are immune to status effects, so it just comes down to spamming whatever and then healing when it does it's big fuck off reduce to 1HP attack.

FF's idea of difficulty in general has always been monsters that resist everything and just do huge damage.

I loved the drop-in-drop-out party system it had, but it could have used a better way to distribute experience since I just never used some party members like Klifford the Big Blue Dog. That's another thing I do not like about the newer FF games: computer-controlled party members. I want to have total control of my party and not have the game play itself for me. If people enjoy it, that's fine, but it's not what I like. Fortunately, the newer games have kind of forced me into looking at other JRPGs to get my fix, so it was overall a good thing for me that FF has changed. Still, I would like the games to once again be more in line with what I like one of these days.

Well, that's why I like XII as an exception. It's computer controlled, but you have direct influence over them. If you win, it's because of you, not the AI. The AI by itself is actually very poor in that game, and I felt like it was done so intentionally.

And as I mentioned before, this was just another step to Square making FF more fast paced and action oriented and trying to work out how best to do that.

Personally, I feel like JRPGs are still stuck in the past, and I appreciate the fact that FF has been trying new things. I think we need to move beyond the "enemies line up on this side of the screen, player characters line up on the other side, then take turns attacking each" style of game.

Either that or actually do something to make it interesting and do something that hasn't been done before.

I felt the same, I guess that's why I enjoyed it. Despite XIV being more piss easy than XI, there's positioning knowledge needed in a lot of battles in FF. Knowing when to defeat a monster and where. T9 comes to mind.

Which is why I said that they should just rip off Grandia's battle system completely since FFX-2 and XIII were just gimped versions of it without the movement option and the ability to push enemies back on the timeline for turns. Dammit, why can't more JRPGs just be clones of Grandia? It had the best combat system and it still holds up to this day. It was the perfect evolution of the ATB system, but FF for some reason won't accept take it for themselves. It's not like Grandia is still getting games to this day, so no one would call them out for it.
