Had a semi-interesting chat with my gamedev module coordinator. You really could just put any prototype on kickstarter and see some money. Or better, a Patreon so you could just see some money come in, and if you don't succeed, nothing to give back.

>>
>>123402325
>>123402384
>Roguelike is a subgenre of role-playing video games, characterized by procedural generation of game levels, turn-based gameplay, tile-based graphics, permanent death of the player-character, and typically based on a high fantasy narrative setting. Roguelikes descend from the 1980 game Rogue, particularly mirroring Rogue's character- or sprite-based graphics.

nigga even on game update events your game will be at least playtested and bashed by others. the only reason no one played your game so far is because you keep finding reasons to just give up when you should literally just do it.

Visualize you/yourself/your soul or whatever, visualize all the doubts and fears and self pity as another entity,
literally put a bubble around yourself.
You are now perfectly safe and free to do as you wish, unbound by society/norms/self doubt or need of approval/acceptance. You are quite literally free in every way imaginable.
Now make your fucking game. Not for money, not for fame, not for acceptance, but because you want to/feel like it. (and trust me, you feel like it)

The sprites and the majority of the code will be totally non reusable if I'll decide to switch after trying one of them and I really don't want to waste effort on it, especially considering how long it takes for me to make good looking sprites.

Hello everyone!

I've made big improvements in my Sprite Font & handler classes! I abandoned the variables for spacing and kerning, since I will only ever use monospace fonts for dialog/menus and special fonts will only be used for titles so they'll only ever write one line.

The plain black dialogue box and its location/size are just temporary until I design some nice UI components.

from 8 to 12+ hours a day, from monday to saturday, sometimes sunday too, home awaits and elder family member that I have to wash after/care for.
vaguely dev for half an hour~1hr before going to bed. and sometimes half of sunday.

I would gladly trade all of the above for a solid 12 hour shift 5 days a week (having a clockwork time schedule is so much more important than you can possibly imagine), have 2 free days and no one to care for/clean feces after when I get home.

will my game make money/get me to better jobs/etc? that would be nice. do I care what others think of it/my progress? no. do I listen to all of my self doubt and pity? (trust me here I have more than you can possibly imagine) no. I shove it all away, get in my comfy bubble and dev, be it for fun or passion (or both).

do not believe in God if so you choose, do not believe in others that they will love/hate your game. Believe in your self, in your DETERMINATION.

I used to think that the whole "blocking distractions" was nonsense until I started being serious about it, and I've made some serious progress towards actually working and making progress.

Two years ago, I was always never leaving home, stuck in my room, browsing AGDG and doing nothing useful with myself. I had to experiment a lot, but my current progress is as follows:

I have a to-do list, with everything I need to do, however soon or not. I don't make them vague, I make them short and concise. I wouldn't write "make game X", that's not a task. I'd write something like "add position debug text" or something.

I assign these tasks to particular days, and mark at what times I start these tasks and when I plan to finish. Being wrong is ok, it helps you improve on guessing how long a certain task will take you. You just readjust your schedule, try to make as much as you can and move on.

Finally, I started actually blocking fucking distractions. I can have AGDG in a second screen now with no problem, but when I really wanna work with no stopping or distractions I mute my browser, I mute my phone, the only thing there is when I wanna focus is the work I wanna do and some background music that immensely helps me get in flow.

Finally, the hardest thing I had to learn is that all it takes to work and keep going is starting. But that doesn't seem a problem for you, since you only find it hard to keep going.

I want to work on a game for android (or for PC is fine as well). I'm ok with either a framework, library, or engine, don't care...

I want to work on a Linux machine. I only know Sepples and Python (though I want to learn a functional language like Haskell or Clojure, but that might be best left for a different project. Also want to learn JavaScript, which I know very little of). What do you guys recommend?

Ideally, I wanna get started remaking classics for android like space invaders, tetris and shit, but eventually my goal is to become familiar with whatever library, framework, or engine I might use and get something bigger started. Once I have something to show, I could bring in other people (maybe people from work) and make it a complete game out of it.

Sometimes I like to think of ideas for games but I have no technical skill to make them.

My current idea is a Souls-Like Metroidvania with Nidhogg-tier graphics. Or maybe a little better than Nidhogg, more like Duelyst.

Gameplay would be identical to Souls. Up-slot for Spells, down-slot for items, and a left and right equipment slot. Health and Stamina. Fights just like Souls, only you can only move forward and back on a 2D plane.

I think it would be neat.

I'll seriously look into it.

Is SFML a pain to work with on Linux? I just don't want to work with Visual Studio... Not that I have anything personal against it, but it's just that I enjoy developing on Linux far more than I ever have on Windows.

I now SDL 2.0 is another option for sepples, but I remember using 1.2, and it was VERY barebones. I dicked around a little with SFML a couple of years back, and it just seemed like it would be less painful to use.

I also looked into pygame and ignifuga:

Unity's giving me a strange issue. When I punch this bullet, I have it set to do a single 180 degree rotation. It seems to take 2 frames to turn when I want it to do it instantaneously.

Using either transform.Rotate(0f, 0f, 180f) or manually setting the eulerAngles, it seems to go from 0 degrees, to between 230-250 degrees, then to the final 180. Any clue what it may be?

Post code, for hit detection and rotation.
Also what's wrong with your sprites?
>>
Remember to ONLY use free software to develop your game. Do not give up your rights as a developer to some non-free engine like Unity or UE4.
That means LOVE or Ogre3D.
>>
>>123418703
You mean that weird shifting? It's due to Unity's camera and the sprites not being locked to a solid grid.

Here's the relevant section of code and the only thing that rotates the object:

void OnTriggerEnter2D(Collider2D col){
if (col.gameObject.GetComponent<Attacker>() && lastHitObject != col.gameObject){
lastHitObject = col.gameObject;
rb.velocity = -rb.velocity;
transform.Rotate(0f, 0f, -180f);
}
}

Once it hits an object, it can't be hit by it again, meaning the issue can't be that it's doing multiple rotations from multiple collisions. The player is the only object in the scene capable of colliding with the bullet, and there are no other collisions fucking with it.

why make a dialogue heavy game with an emphasis on humor if you lack the skill or know-how to deliver?
>>
I'm just gonna make my game as offensive as possible. I figure if I can piss everyone off then I won't have to worry about offending anyone since everyone will be offended equally, so then it won't look like I was pandering only to SJWs or MRAs.

I'll give the option to play as an SJW where you physically assault males, and then also have an option to play as an MRA where you physically assault females. And by not including transhumans in the equation I will have succeeded in offending them as well.

Fuck this is the worst time to be trying to make it in the video games industry, everyone wants to be pissed at something. I'd prefer if everyone could just shut the fuck up. I'd shut up too, but everyone else is being so loud about their autism too so it's only fair.

I think the right bandana blue shirt is best, but if you're going to have her against a light background then give her the grey shirt or else it'll look weird.
With the left side bandana one it's kinda hard to seperate where the bandana ends and hair begins, making it so it's hard to tell at first glance. This is just my opinion as I am in no way a professional but with small or simple sprites like these it's a must to be able to tell all important aspects of a characters look immediately, and if you think it's not an important part of her look then it doesn't need to be there.

Fixed some bugs in the collision code causing exploding blocks to explode only very rarely. Now they always explode when they die, even if they get separated from the ship.

Also added a small random delay to block explosions. This makes them staggered, which looks a bit nicer and doesn't slow down any single simulation update as much as it did before.

Won't you be modeling using a character as a base anyway? If you want to use programming then you could put the armor objects center of origin on the point of the bone that it relates to. So for a shoulder pad put it's center so that when you move it in engine to the shoulder bone it'll align up perfectly. I mean you'll probably have to use some programming anyway.

It can be good to understand what made it so popular but if you aren't making a game in the same genre it's not that relevant.

The game doesn't need to have a whole extensive story, but I do like it when games have a bit of lore or a bit of story even if it's not the main focus of the game.
There are plenty of games that are fun completely based on their gameplay, but the lore just adds a bit of fun flavor to the game.

So if you were to make a shoulder pad for your character you could bring in the character. Move the 3d cursor to the shoulder bone and make a new mesh on that point. That way anything you model will be centered on that shoulder bone and you should have no problem placing it in the right place in the engine you use. Just put it as a child of the shoulder bone and it should snap right into place.

if you want to change the origin point go to mesh/transform/origin to geometry

your meshes will rotate properly

actually meant to say object/transform/origin to geometry or whatever setting is best for you

also if you want the 3D cursor to center just around the middle everytime click shift+alt

>>123431235
Will you add mecha to my story?
>>
>>123430663
Look at stories in things YOU really like. Study them. Think about why you like them and how they relate to you and the things you think about.

Add in some personal experience to whatever you make and focus it into themes as you see fit.

In the end, it'll probably be a balancing act depending on the kind of game you make and the way it will deliver its story, but that guy that posted about not knowing how to write a funny script above trying to write a joke was bound to fail at it.

The bare minimum is to just have your actors have some kind of motivation, and a lot of games get by with that.

2 Questions.

1: What type of music is best for devving? I assume something ambient-ish so it doesn't distract.

2:What benefits are there to using Lua or Pascal over C++ or the more commonly used languages? I learned the usual(Python, Java, C++) and was wondering if I should bother learning those others and doing anything in them.

Asking this question again since last time I asked only shitposting ensued without any reasonable answers.

Platformer or topdown for animu roguelite pixelshit? Been pondering for too long without being able to decide and make the game.

My art's way better in flat platformer style so I'd prefer it but I feel like it might limit the gameplay too much.
>>
>>123443129
Top down
Infinitely more enjoyable than platformers
I honestly can't bring myself to play platformers for long periods of time.
Top downs have so much more gameplay possibility and are often neglected.

Remember though, Steam doesn't care if your game is shit. People will still buy 1-2$ games as a joke because they can

How do i get a good battle system in game-maker?
I mean should I just deactivate everything and then create some kind of obj_Battle object that handles everything?

How would I even pass variables into it or figure out scripted stuff like finding out if the player lost or won.

I wish gamemaker had anonymous functions like C++11 does so I could just toss certain game logic around like any other variable or piece of data.

How did undertale do it? It switched to a battle room but how did it go back to the previous room to continue things where it left off or get certain scripted dialog within a battle?

>>123445418
Making hands themselves is pretty easy because you've got a 3D reference right in front of you all the time. Making them in such a way that they can be animated realistically is actually quite difficult. You're going to have to really look at how your hands work anatomically, where the hinges are, etc, when you consider your topo. This is the part you want to pay the most attention to, it's hard to change later on and it'll come back to bite you if you slop it.

As something required for 90% of FPS games I'm sure there will be thousands of hand modelling tutorials out there anon.

Make a flowchart with arrows pointing what ways get you where

Then in your game, assign flags/booleans/some value to each event being completed.

Whenever you get to a point that has multiple choices, check the related values at that point to see what to do next.

You're not going to find a tool for something like that besides something like Lucidchart on google drive, which is just a better Google Drawing

Shoot low always, and when you want to do nice art, do it for important parts of the game.

Heck just try doing the art yourself for a single piece. Then imagine how much time it will take to do that for every area in the game. If it's a really short game though, go for it.

Now that I'm done ( >>123427925 ) anyone have some HOT TIPS for me to be less shit for next time around?

I probably won't pop cash on a decent microphone, and there's not too much I can do with my voice (practicing that was part of the reason I started to do the videos to begin with).
>>
>>123427925

I actually didn't think you did too badly. I'd just recommend breathing into the microphone less.

I'm sorry my game didn't work right.

I'm sure having tons of followers helps, but I've seen people with several thousands of followers flop painfully hard, either they get 3 digit sales figures or they try a kickstarter and don't even get 25% of their goal. That kind of thing.

I guess what I should have said instead is, having friends doesn't mean you'll have sales.
>>
>>123458698
Oh, yeah. I imagine that'd be annoying as hell. Perhaps there's a good solution that doesn't involve buying an expensive mic.
>>

Expect shitposting from people that talk about Unity but don't even have a game.
There are a bunch of official and unofficial tutorials on YT, search for Unreal Engine or Tesladev, probably anything you need you'll find how to make it.

Retarded? Well, one good thing about Unreal is that you don't need programming knowledge to make things work, just watch some tutorials, learn which commands are useful for the things you want to do and if you can't figure out something just search on google for a forum link.

>what kind of product should I expect in the end for my first try?
That depends on your scope.

As with everything, there is a science behind music. The easiest way to learn music is to read up on that science.

However, you could skip that part, and just lay out some MIDI notes on a grid. Experiment your way to a cohesive and catchy melody and progression, then call it a day. As with anything, you'll need to repeat that process for quite some time to become good at it.

Picking up an instrument is also very important, you'll learn way faster, and because music is based on the idea that our imperfect motor controls should be performing it, it will become clear to you why snapping MIDI to a grid makes music sound like a computer made it.

Then you'll need to mix it, this is the most important part, and it comes with its own set of do's and don't's, which you'll need to learn. One thing I hear quite often in indie games is that they've omitted the mixing part, and I cannot stress enough how important mixing is for making a song stick out.

Mixing is making the song sound right. It involves tweaking volumes, panning instruments and various other, more technical things.

Basically, sounds sound like shit. They're not really pleasant to listen too. When you listen to some artist, their voice is usually subtly altered in many ways. 99% of the time, the voice is equalized, removing frequencies that might clash with the guitar, making the sound muddy, or maybe the artists high range sounds great, so we'll want to boost that. The guitars might want to be separated in the stereospace, and this clears up some space for the vocals to shine more, or maybe our drums can now be louder without obfuscating the vocals. This is a very technical process, but it does allow for creativity at the same time.

Then maybe we want that MIDI choir to sound like it is in a church, if we add some reverb, we can obtain that effect. This also has the bonus of making our MIDI choir sound more realistic. Maybe even go crazy and add a chorus to the choir, making it sound like even more people are in it. If we want some freaky effect, we can automate that choir to pan across the stereospace every quarter note. This is the creative side of mixing, and it is gives music the finishing touch.

Music is a 3D model, and mixing is the texture, kind of; I was never good at analogies.

Dave Pensado is an interesting character, his mixing is top notch, and he's more than willing to share his knowledge.

hump a song with your microphone, convert it to midi using melodyne, then copy that melody into FL studio and fit it to a chord progression and scale.

Not him, but personally I don't really care if my music is good especially this early in development. I'm this close to turning 'Mary had a little lamb' into some generic remix just to get it over with. Just add a modern beat or whatever the term is sounds 'cool'. We're fucking amateurs, not pros. If you're a pro then why are you wasting time here. Go hang out with other pros and challenge yourself instead of pretending to be a mentor to babbies.

I'm not gonna waste time learning something I don't care about. I listen to music through shitty 99 cent headphones that break every 2 or 3 months, but as long as the tune is catchy enough, I don't need some crystal clear thousand-euro speakers or 50 lb subwoofers just to listen to a song that I'm going to forget about after playing it over for 6 or 7 times on youtube.

Just like how some of you don't give a shit about learning how to art or learning how to program 'properly', some of us don't give a shit about learning how to music properly. Try to look at it from another perspective and maybe it will be easier for you to understand.

For floats, you should always compare floats using a ±epsilon of either value
If "a" is within a epsilon(b) distance of "b", then "a" and "b" are equal
To be honest, I always use class wrappers for my floats so I can overload the comparison operators to account for that automatically. In C++ you can even use user-defined litterals to make it as easy to use as regular floats

I kinda wanna make a 3D mech game but I don't know the first thing about making 3D games, only 2D.

Where should I start to learn about skeletal animation and all that? I assume that's what I'll need to learn to get started with 3D

That perspective looks weird to me. Besides it's best to have your own art if you plan on releasing the game. You can use those tiles while making the actual game, but get some real art before releasing.

I don't have a problem with the tile perspective as such but I'm confused by the layout, those are supposed to be lower floors right?

I think it might look less weird if you made it a wide flat building and had everything on the same floor rather than a tall one, the (elevator?) just doesn't pull it together.

I've written several programs that do numerical stuff (also a bit of cryptography) in sepples. Most of the real software I've built, though, was at work in Python + Flask (or Django).

I wanna practice more sepples, though. Recommend a framework (engines and libraries are fine too, I guess) that's similar to Flask in how easy it is to get into while still not holding your hand TOO much and how much documentation there is, but for games and C++, please. It seems that most are either full-on engines (and the good ones aren't entirely free, like UE4), or libraries like Ogre3d. Also, doesn't have to be full 3D (it can be 2D as long as you can use opengl)... I really don't care... I'd prefer if it's not too painful to port to mobile platforms, but don't care too much about that.

Any kind of comparison can have floating errors

Just yesterday I was doing a line segment / box collision where I tested against every plane of the box, then I tested if the collision was within the bounds of the box (because planes are usually infinite, but not when they're the face of a box).
The face the line collided with was on x = 7.0, the collision was detected at 7.000000002, then when I tested "if collision.x <= box.max_x", it returned false and rejected the collision.
I added some epsilon here and there and everything turned out right. Well, if you do what I do you shouldn't forget to adjust the collision point to bring it back on the edge of the box.

PhotonNetwork.playerList.Length; is a string of all the different players in the room, im trying to that but with a different script which separates the players into different teams by another string, so what im trying to do is count every player in the foreach statement, in a way that will keep track if a player joins or leaves the room, hope thats a bit clearer because its seriously confusing to me

hi. I've never posted in this thread before, so I apologize if I sound like a dumb shitter.

I'm a writer, and a buddy of mine was thinking about making a text-based h-game while the iron is hot in the porn market. Of course, I was absolute rubbish at programming back in my high school programming class, and he is pretty inept at it as well. I was thinking of maybe using Tyranobuilder since it seems pretty easy, while he was considering Twine (which honestly seems rather primitive these days). However, both of them don't seem to be too useful if we ever want to implement a combat system that isn't just ATTACK DEFEND RUN (although Tyrano does support java).

So, what you guys suggest we do? Is there an engine out there other than RPG Maker that could easily support turn-based combat? I've tried talking to coders that I'm friends with to see if anyone wants to help, but we haven't had much luck. I don't really want to start a project like this until we have a groundwork we can actually build upon.

Its just a pet project, im actually working on a 2d platformer and i came up with a mechanic which i thought id make into its own game, im actually surprisingly close to actually finishing the game mechanically since most of the Photon demos covered the basics and ive been able to alter the rest, but some of the shit is mindbogglingly confusing, all i really need to do is figure out how to get an Integer from the PhotonNetwork script of the players in each team and i can use that to instantiate the players and start the round, thats more or less it really, though i guess you are right in that il only be able to have 20 people in the game at a time unless i fork out 96 dolarydoos

Still it is only a pet project, the platformer im working on (the skeleton one) got way too big and i kinda realised i wouldnt finish it anytime soon so i thought id learn how to do some other stuff and maybe release a small multiplayer game, be honest after i finish this i cant see myself doing a multiplayer again its a complete nightmare of problems

oh no i can already do the event thing, its

public void OnPhotonPlayerConnected(PhotonPlayer player)
{
Debug.Log("OnPhotonPlayerConnected: " + player);
}

for a player entering, but i can already count the ammount of players in the room, what i need to do is have each player join a team which there is already a script for, it writes it as a hashable to the PhotonNetwork or something, and when a player has joined either team 1 or 2 it registers and increases an integer, then i can make sure only a certain ammount of players can join each team and make the manager instantiate each player in its starting location

Fuck's sake. The bar is this low for making games, now?
>>
>>123474882
I suppose. I mean, it doesn't need to have combat. We could swing it as more of a CYOA VN if we can't find the means to make something more complex.
>>123474692
Is it now? I've written quite a few short stories before, so I thought a text-heavy game would be something I could actually contribute to a bit better than other genres.
>>
>>123475098
oh no no no, he actually needs an AbstractPlayerTeamGroupArrayBeanFactory and that behaves like a Set and then use BTree lookups for join/leave and then implement a Vector.length method
>>
>>123475098
You dont think i tried that? each script has an ownership variable in the PhotonNetwork, basically the server master or the player who enters first is the only one who can change the variables in the script, you can take control of a script using TransferOwnership(PhotonNetwork.player.ID); but that has to access another script so if the variable you want to change is in the next line then it doesnt always register because the player.ID might not have changed in time

and like i said i already can detect how many players are in a room i dont need an increment/decrement

>Winning will get you to fuck them, losing is getting raped by them

I know this has probably been asked before and I'm sorry if I'm missing something from the OP, but is there any lengthy recommended reading material? I checked the OP, but I'm more interested in reading material that is more lengthy and in depth, rather than just a few short links.

In particular, is there anything focused on game development using the Unreal Engine and their scripting language? While I have been able to do a few things, I feel like I'm seriously hurting myself by just jumping into it, when there may be something out there that may help me clear up my confusion. I looked through the documentation on their website, but the stuff there seems like more of a reference than anything else.

I recall a book on on game development through C++ being posted a while back, but I don't have it anymore. It was referred to as something that "every person seriously interested in game development has used" or something along those lines.

I'm gonna do it boys. I've decided to start working on an android game. Board game RPG / waifu collecting game most likely.

What advice would you have? I've got a bit of experience with programming - over the last 7 years I have take a few entry-to-intermediate level courses in Java, C++ and Python. I've got a solid concept for what I want my game to look like. The only problem I've got at the moment is I don't have advanced knowledge base or real artistic skill.

I hope you're going for the asian market and have access to a publisher in China and Korea

advice? Maybe you shouldn't make a Board game RPG / waifu collecting game.

But that's none of my business.

What mobile game would you make?
>>

What a loaded question
>>

I have no idea, anon. I would take the time to think of something that I thought was good.

I can't now, I'm too wrapped up in a serious PC game.

Maybe I'm wrong, if you thought about a really good concept that works really well in mobile, go for it. You have to make hard decision, in this sort of thing.

The best advice I can give you is to not make a mobile game. It is incredibly hard to get your game visibility on mobile and even more so if you don't have any previously successful titles or a huge publisher behind you.
