I didn't see the question last thread. I would have ended the game like this:
Basically Max gets to the point where she's in the nightmare, she leaves the diner after talking to herself, makes her way through memories with Chloe, and then gets to the lighthouse.
At the lighthouse she finds Rachel, clearly controlling the storm and pissed off at Arcadia Bay, glad the town is finally going to get destroyed. Max asks her why she's doing this. Rachel responds with how the town hurt her and Chloe. And how Rachel sent Max the warning to let her know that she should get out of town and also said that if Chloe died in the bathroom she should be happier because she would be with Rachel and William. It devolves into Max and Rachel fighting, accusing each other of hurting Chloe (Rachel lying to her, Max abandoning her for years). Their argument/ fight eventually ends with Max crying and yelling at herself for making so many mistakes.
Rachel realizes she was wrong Max, and can see that Max cares about Chloe, so she decides to give them a chance. Rachel helps Max up, apologizes to her, and says only she can make Chloe happy. They hug and Max wakes up, with Chloe, as the storm dissipates. Leaving the two of them on the cliff during the sunset. Max and Chloe own up to their mistakes and confess their feelings towards each other. They walk down the cliff, holding hands, and from the treeline you see an apparition of Rachel, smiling, before she fades away.
Cut to a montage during the credits of Polaroids showing the damage being repaired in the town, having a funeral for Rachel, Max and Chloe building a relationship, hanging out with their friends, and eventually going to various places on a road trip.

So, serious question here. The game has been over for more than a month now, and most people who still come here seem to be against any future content or a second season. Yes, EP5 didn't live up to what we hoped it would, but 1-4 undoubtedly brought enough of an attachment that we're all still here. I can't fathom people having such a sour taste in their mouth from the ending that they'd never want to experience what made everything leading up to it again, and as much as people are in denial about it, we all know that they're capable of delivering top notch content when they've got the time and budget to deliver it. They wrote themselves into too deep of a story and had to simplify it to keep up with their timeframe, and as a fragile tiny studio they're obligated to defend their product both for their sake and their publishers sake--especially if they ever want to have a chance to get the green light for doing more with this series.

So if you're actually against this series ever continuing, why are you torturing yourself by still coming here?

I'm not against a second season by any means and I think quite a few anons want it as well. The problem is that I've lost a lot of trust and goodwill to Dontnod. Prior to Episode 4 I was keen on a second season because I wanted to see the continuation of a series I've grown to love. Now I want a second season because I'm desperate to play something as good as the first four episodes and to make sure Episode 5 isn't the thing that leaves lasting impressions. At the same time though I view it with suspicion and mistrust (and probably still will throughout the year its episodes are released) because Dontnod have proven that they can't be relied on to create a well-written finale.

I've said from the beginning that the most interesting characters are the males. Max and Chloe are the protagonist and have to be interesting by default, Kate is just a victim who's circumstances far outweigh her personality, and Victoria is probably less plot related than Warren - and if he's "heterosexuality personified" then Vic is "girls can't get along" personified. They put in a negate effort to suggest involvement in the beginning with her defaced Rachel posters, place in the Vortex Club and friendship with Nathan, but she doesn't even qualify as a red herring. And her character is clumsily portrayed despite all her potential, then stuffed in a fridge for the sake of enhancing Jefferson's entirely undeveloped character at the 11th hour, despite having had a pefectly nice resolution to her arc during the party no matter which choice you went with.

I think the blogger is pretty damn harsh in suggesting Nathan was exactly spared, but it's genuinely fucked right the hell up that Chloe's unnecessary death is what it costs for him to get help, despite a lifetime of warning signs.

Also interesting (but not surprising) to hear that every creative on the LiS team was male.

Wut? Did the author even play the same game as me? Because it does literally the exact opposite.

The entire point is that Max starts the game NOT wanting to reach out to other people. She's a shy person who lives in her own comfy little self-isolated cocoon of insecurity, which leads her to be somewhat apathetic about many of her classmates and friends. She doesn't bother to learn their names (what's Juliet's last name?), she doesn't make any attempts to show genuine interest in their hobbies (what is Brooke's drone?) or personal circumstances (Taylor's mother, Stella's family life), she takes people at face value before actually trying to get to know them (eg. Victoria - at the start of the game, Max sees her simply as Queen Bitch of Blackwell, but it's not until she *reaches out* that she learns she's deeper than that, shares a lot of the same insecurities, interests, seems to like Max despite some jealousy, etc ... and we also see that they'd literally be best friends in a timeline where Max was a bit more confident in herself). Max avoids reconnecting with Chloe due to shyness ... but when she does, she finds it's the best friendship she's ever experienced (and a possible romance!) ... and if only she had reconnected sooner she might have been able to prevent her death without causing the storm (plot convenience, and all that).

The point is, the game goes of its way to show us the positives of Max reaching out to people and making a genuine effort. In the course of a few days she manages to make an army of new friends; she learns that everyone else likes her just fine for who she is, she just needs to put herself out there, etc.

How could the author of this piece interpret this part of the narrative literally backwards. There's a reason the first episode was called "chrysalis".

This is why I stopped reading.

Helping Chloe by brining back her father sticks her in a wheelchair, helping Vic by doing literally the only decent thing gets her fucking killed.

Different anon, but I wouldn't say she is punished for reaching out. No matter what you do during the week, the tornado is inevitable. Even if you are the bitchiest and distanced you can be, the "punishment" still comes. Which I'm not sure we are meant to understand as punishment to begin with. However, the effects of reaching out throughout the story are pretty positive. You can get Victoria and Taylor to open up to you, have meaningful conversation with Dana, make David see the wrong in his behaviour without his marriage being ruined, save Kate's life, and so on.

But yeah, the game in the end definitely is "Life is Suffering". Senseless misery, I see no hopeful note in it all, personally. If anything, it gets worse the more you spin it around and examine it. Like the suggestion that Max creates timelines and traps "versions of herself" in them? Yeah, great stuff to hint at, rather than hinting at something hopeful and actually having to do with the character stories.

I don't really think it's gendered though. Just another symptom of how much dontnod fucked literally everyone over.
Jefferson was an undeveloped character, so they had to sacrifice their most interesting female character as a shortcut to making him more threatening. Chloe was written off for most of the episode so they just cut corners and let David be totally redeemed for the mere fact that he's not a murderer despite all his genuine bullshit. Warren's arc is left on the cutting room floor and he's reduced to a stock love interest (which is a sexist archetype that is very unfortunate for his character - so it's not as simple as 'x good y bad').

I don't think it's anywhere near as gendered a problem as the post made it out to be, but it's fair enough worth thinking out loud about.

But dontnod's own (self confessed) pseudo feminism sort of exacerbates this. All the main antagonists and red herrings are males, all the people in there stealth sequence are males. Everyone loves a villain, and these characters are actively investigated making them more intriguing by default.
Victoria is an interesting character, but she's incredibly under utilised, killed off for effect, and Nathan speaks for her in the nightmare stealth sequence rather than simply having her appear.
With all the female threats in Max's life - Vic's talent, Taylor/Courtney's popularity and social climbing, Ms Grants guilt tripping, Joyce's expectations, Rachel's impossible reputation, etc - it's very strange that they reduced that sequence of the nightmare to 'men are scary.'
And this is just one of many (pft, every) examples of how intentionally placing a feminist message in your story can be read as being the total opposite of feminist.

Right. She didn't necessarily do it herself naturally, or even, arguably, for the right reasons. But the point is that she DID do it. She DID learn the lesson; she DID come to understand herself and her classmates/friends beyond some superficial first impression; she DID learn that these are wonderful people who like her for who she is, if only she was to put some more effort in and stop worrying about herself.

Debatable. All we know is that it "punishes" a single thing she did with her powers. But regardless, the above point is still clear. In spite of everything, there are aspects of Max's adventure that act as a positive learning experience. Breaking out of her "chrysalis" is one of them.

Life isn't fair. Not everything is going to go your way. You can either go out and actually try to engage with people - and deal with the occasional shitty situation when it comes up - or you can just retreat to your safe little cocoon and not connect with anyone.

I don't think it's fair to argue that, because a limited few of Max's attempts to reach out to people have negative outcomes (eg. Victoria getting kidnapped/killed), the game is arguing that you shouldn't reach out to people. Warning Victoria about Nathan IS the right thing to do, even if the eventual, unforeseen consequence, is horrible. Overall, Max's attempts at connecting with people have a positive effect. All the negative examples exist as extraordinary situations (the use of literal super powers; and drugging/kidnapping). These provide lessons of their own.

They say the game portrays females as un-companionable, but the main story is about the relationship between two girls strong enough to defy "fate" or physics and transcend time.
They say the female characters lack in richness or agency when the main character is female and decides as some sort of omnipotent being between life and death of everyone. Chloe is the most intricately explored character in the game, she's rich and interesting both as a person and emotionally where there's all kinds of complexity there. Victoria certainly rivals Nathan in that regard, Kate is on par with David in terms of relevance for the plot and for side characters between Taylor, Brooke, Dana, Alyssa there's definitely more depth and substance there than for Luke, Daniel, Hayden & Co. And you mention it yourself; Warren is a caricature. If people want to argue that Kate is "unfairly" one-dimensional, then what does that make Warren? Sure, he had a bit of an arc forming, but then that was just never more than just that initial curve, and his personality is dead flat regardless.

I know you started off saying "Max and Chloe are the protagonist and have to be interesting by default" - but what is it then that "feminists" would want out of a game; that everyone and everything of importance is inherently "female"? I'm not even trying to be contrarian, I just find it interesting that a game that is praised for going with female leads and female stories despite industry pressures gets ranted about being somehow sexist or ridiculing or whatever. Call it what it is: bad writing/execution - but don't, as that other anon I think correctly analyzed, try to gender that argument.

Hey guys just finished Episode 5 and it was terrible more way than terrible. It's shit damn...

Did they say something about Max's powers? Where did she get that powers and how? I want to know because i had to listen Warren's painful dialogue and butthurt reactions for 1 hour. ''Oh Max i know you didn't come for me, for this photo'' This kid saying same shit we've already known. ''Chaos Theory,Butterfly Effect'' Really? Everyone knows that already though. I think many current day writers have completely forgotten why stories are being told in the first place. If you want to tell a tragic story, that's fine, but 2 things are absolutely crucial for a good tragedy. 1: The protagonist needs to be directly responsible for their own suffering and punishment and 2: There needs to be a REAL, concrete message, not some blurry shit like "it's about growing up and you shouldn't let life pass you by and uh, moving forward and don't rely on superpowers or something".

There was no real message behind Max's punishment. There was no real lesson for her to learn, she didn't do anything wrong. In fact, the exact opposite is true, she is being punished for doing the right thing. For saving another person's life when it was in her power to do so.

Well, except for William. Joyce, Grant, the homeless woman - all the "voices of wisdom" are female and they are the few characters that aren't really "grey". Samuel may be a candidate for that in the male camp, but he's at least not as obviously benevolent as those female chars.

I've got no real issues with the suggestion that there is no strong, consistent message behind Max's main "punishment". I agree that this part of the narrative feels pretty weak.

But I think it's a little unfair for people to point to EVERY example of something going unfairly wrong for Max (eg. warning Victoria actually gets her killed) as some sort of antithetical punch in the face. Especially in a game that supposedly wanted to try to keep some grey about it's decisions. I didn't want everything to be an obvious "good" and obvious "bad" choice. I wanted some grey; I wanted some "good" choices to turn out bad and vice versa. This idea promoted in the tumblr blog posted by >>123356609 that, unless you show positive outcomes for every example of Max reaching out to other people, you're promoting her not reaching out ... is just silly. Especially when the vast majority of examples of "Max reaching out" has positive outcomes.

Except that you obliterate the "cause" when you go back in time and save William. There'd be an entirely different "cause" then at an entirely different point in the time line. But the "effects" remain identical - they don't start earlier (in spite of the "cause" being moved back by years), they don't change in magnitude (in spite of the number of time interventions being drastically lower in the AU as the Max there never discovers her powers, and the extent of changes is enormously higher - since the original change occurred far earlier).

Overall it doesn't seem like the supposed cause and effect are very well correlated.

Then again we are dealing with the dipshits who thought sodium and potassium have different chemical reactions when they're both in the same chemical group.

Yeah that's the other problem about the story.In Episode 4 we saved William but we never saved Chloe in the bathroom. But actually we used our power to save William.To game's logic if we saved William and if we used our power storm has to hit the town before five years.

Well, yeah, I agree with you there, that is indeed stupid. Unfair and unforeseen shit happening that the protagonist then has to deal with is part of what makes any story interesting. My point is that in the end of that story, you need a fair conclusion based on the message you want to convey, if you want a satisfying ending that doesn't leave the audience frustrated as fuck. That is even more important if you want a sad ending for your story.

They also really messed up the whole butterfly effect idea when Max goes back in time once again to let William die, but then does something very differently from the original timeline, by giving Chloe a heartfelt, almost hysterical speech. Imagine how strange it must have been for Chloe that right after this weird conversation with Max where she is clearly implying something terrible might happen soon, her father gets into an accident and dies.

A seemingly small change like that should have had major consequences if they had stayed true to the whole butterfly effect concept they were trying to push with episode 4.

Victoria being killed is brought up because it's a particularly dumb example. Jefferson tells Max he plans on pinning all the crimes on Nathan.

Yet he grabbed Victoria basically because she told him she's worried about Nathan. The smart move would be to say "oh yes, I'm worried about him too. Maybe you should go down to the police right now and tell them that", while stroking your goatie like any intelligent villain would.

Also, Victoria apparently thinks the best person to go to for help is the guy she tried to blackmail with the threat of a rape complaint a day earlier. Not , say, the bouncers at the party, who are all basically under her control.

I finally started jacking off again after the almost three weeks since I finished the game.

I haven't felt this weird and dirty about it since I was 12. Fuck episode 5 and fuck the ending and what it did to me, I'm fucking 25 years old I shouldn't get this emotional over a story to the point where I'm either absolutely livid or completely empty for a month. I feel fucking pathetic.

At least things are going back to normal, I even visited sad panda today...

I don't really get why Butterfly Effect and Chaos Theory even where suggested as being such integral elements of the game. I mean, they just aren't. It looks like they just serve to attract a sci-fi audience and get talk going in that direction, when the game itself with the spirit doe roaming around, prophetic visions, surprise-eclipse and double moons certainly does not make a point of being scientifically ambitious. With the butterfly imagery and literally calling an episode "Chaos Theory" I just think those concepts get a type of validity in the context of the story that the story itself doesn't ever really entertain. It would have been more fitting if bringing that stuff up was limited to Max and Chloe. Because that would also help to highlight the idea that they are in the end wrong about the cause of the storm. What's more likely, that some girl's unfortunate death causes a storm or that it has something to do with random solar eclipses and double moons? Of course, her death could have to do with those too - but then it would become part of that side of the plot, i. e. all this shit is magic anyway.

This is pretty true. It's a valid interpretation/view of LiS and has plenty of textual context for it. I think in reality, the writing was just absolutely horrid overall and everyone suffered as a result, but they definitely aren't wrong. It's surely not what they had in mind when making this game, but it can come across this way. Thing with feminism is that it's never just black and white, so while I agree with this post, I also think LiS did some things right in regards to feminism.

Ultimately, the plot writing was just shit and the character writing suffered massively from that.
