I don't know that feel. Perhaps you should consider yourself fortunate that people are looking forward to something you're doing. I could disappear right now and none of the communities I visit would notice I was gone. They most likely never noticed I was there in the first place. It's a bad feel.

What would be examples of when branches or loops would be used in a shader?
Why support them if they're not used and just slow the pipeline down?

I don't know anything about shaders but I think those features may be there for the sake of making the language Turing complete.

2. Ping Pong

Yes, I made snake. My post needs a ","
>>
>>123309154

I wish I had a brain.
But yes, I will. My ability to limit my own ambition and scope is not very good.
Neither is my coding hayooooo

I feel like Pong would be easier than Snake. Unless its like PC vs AI Pong.
>>
>>123304609
thats vocaroo im afraid, its cripsy in my tracker
>>
>>123309906
that's actually my fault, completely missed you mentioned you had made snake. But thinking about it again, I think you're right. Snake's "collision" would only be checking for entities in the same cell.

Then again, I jumped straight at continuous methods of movement and coded my own collision detection. Never made a grid-based game, ever.

Hello everyone!

I decided that I didn't like how MonoGame handled Sprite Fonts, so I wrote my own Sprite Font class, made my own Sprite Font and wrote a handler class for them. Now they're much more manageable!!

Writer.Write() makes a cute dialogue box appear and types the text out character-by-character, but if you press space it will automatically finish whatever it was typing. The text box and its position, font, font size, text colour, kerning, spacing between lines, typing speed etc. can all be customized in the Write() method.

I don't have New Lines working yet, though, and I forgot to add spaces to my sprite font, so for now it just produces one long line of uninterrupted text! Oh well, easy stuff to fix.

What do you guys think about this font? I want it to be stylish without being hard to read. I think it might be too weird and I should find something more normal. I might keep this font and use it situationally, and pick a different font for menus and dialogue and stuff.

Also, I got my driver's license today! A little late (19), but, better late than never. Glad I got it before the snow got any heavier!

>>

mostly because there's a subtle line between clean quality vector art and clean beginner/lazy vector art, also masses can't tell the difference/all vector is cheap, and so something texture heavy has more overall value for the masses

People knock XNA, but I enjoy working in it as an environment. Everything makes sense, it does just the right amount of 'helping', it's easy to get running and with MonoGame it's very multi-platform. I've heard people talk about why they dislike it, and I'm sure their criticisms are valid, but for a 2D game with simple graphics it's more than adequate.

MonoGame isn't quite ready, it's missing some features that were pretty standard in XNA (content pipeline is still really unpredictable and their pipeline tool feels like a bit of a hack rather than a real feature), but since I've seen MonoGame come a long way already I don't doubt that they'll sort this out in the future. In the meantime, it's not too hard to add them myself.

In a nutshell, I use it because it works and I already know how to use it. In the future, maybe I'll learn something else.

Progress

Making some progress getting the netcode to work, working in online and syncing everything perfectly is seriously hard, in fact im still having an issue with the player syncronization if the camera is moving, working on getting all the menus and shit to work at the moment, not bad for a couple of weeks work but im a while off yet, still need to do some actual art

Oh im gonna be releasing it for free so when its actually playable and doesnt look like shit il let you guys know

How do I make a tycoon game fun?

The last tycoon game I played was rollercoaster tycoon 2 over 10 years ago
>>
>>123330036
First step, define "fun".

After you fail that (you're going to fail that) you can decide which enjoyable elements of video games you want to maximize for, and it will be lot easier to think about.
>>
>>123330213
>First step, define "fun".
The player wants to keep playing it
>>
>>123330036
For me the biggest source of fun was seeing expansion. If I was building a theme park tycoon, that could be showed with the park expanding, bigger rides, etc. One tycoon game I played was based around selling lemonade. As you progressed through the game, you went from a little stand on the street to an actual store.

That's a 50% margin of error but even at the high end the ratio of work:payoff is pretty low. 4k sales after over two years of development is barely minimum wage for a single developer. If the sales were actually lower or they had more than one person to pay...that's not great.

I think everyone should experience loving someone and being loved back at least once. And then they can realign their emotional needs to not need to rely on any other human being for the rest of their lives if they desire. This is the ideal situation because at least you know what you're giving up and you know if it's right or wrong for you to give it up, and it feels more like a choice and less like you're a loser.

Anon's first pixel art.gif
6KB, 118x104px
So /agdg/

Since I'm a talentless faggot and still want to make games, I've been analyzing what parts make a game appealing to me. Which seems to be:

1.Quality art/style
2.Gameplay
3. Innovation
4. Atmosphere

And of course I'm shit at all of these. But art is certainly the worst. I love pixel art so I downloaded something like 20 different tutorials yesterday and have been slowly reading through them. One common theme I keep seeing is that antialiasing of a sprite is stupidly important to get right since it rounds edges or creates definition on a picture that otherwise has none.

Is this something that just comes with time? Or is there a surefire method not to fuck up?

As for drawing sprites as a whole, I'll remind you I'm shit at drawing. Should I just copy other peoples sprites pixel for pixel for 9000 hours yil something starts to click? Or keep drawing my shitty cat heads until I reach my planar form?
>>
>>123349536
Since art is the most important and gameplay comes second, you should learn how to make mediocre gameplay and then hire an artist to make art instead of making shitty art and shitty gameplay
>>
>>123349536
learn how to draw instead

and there's way faster/easier ways to please yourself if your own happiness is all you care about
>>
>>123349504

>>
>>123349536
Either art or programming it's going to take 5 years to get good at it to the point where people wanna buy your thing. Choose one, ask people for advice on how you should progress (for instance, >>123349639 is right, you should get an idea of the basics first instead of directly going for pixel art) and keep at it for years. The more you do it the faster you'll get there. It's a grind, like an MMO. Put in the time and be constantly self-aware of your current power level, so you never get stuck in one place for too long and you're always looking to improve areas you're lacking.
>>
>>123349614
If I can't make half decent art myself, how will I explain to someone else what I want? Also I'm a tryhard who wants to be good at everything. All of my friends and girlfriend are artists. I need to get gud.
>>
>>123349660
Then why are you complaining about being unhappy when you could just ignore your own happiness and make content for gmod?
>>
>>123349743
My biggest problem with art has always been consistency and not knowing how to improve when I hit a wall. Since I started drawing for real when I was older and compared myself to people who already knew what they were doing. I had no one as bad as me to compete or compare with.

I imagine I can't just keep following tutorials start to finish until I'm good. But I need some way of dealing with walls. Are there any legit helpful art communities for losers like me that aren't filled with furries?
>>
>>123349778
>All of my friends and girlfriend are artists.
Find the cucck among them and have them do art for you for FREE. You can google for existing art to give them an impression of what you want.

Don't do this until you've gotten at least a prototype with gameplay though.

Or will players know everything they need to know from inside the game itself?

The player should be able to learn well enough, we learn all kinds of crazy things for other games, like how many sticks it takes to craft a crate, or which magic type works best against which other magic type. But the game is aimed at hacking game fans, so they shouldn't be too put off.

but yeah, ultimate responsibility is on the dev to make the mechanics understandable and logical, and right now Im not doing a good job of explaining how a network functions in the mechanics. But one of the things I want with the game is for people to learn things, then go out and google them and find out there really IS an nmap tool, and it really DOES let you see what other computers are on your network, etc. I think its a great feeling to have the curtain pulled back and to see that something that seems intimidating and complex is not really so. So hopefully a player will try typing an IP address into their browser some day, for example

Multiple words only make sense when its inherited from some other class like RenderTexture or something.

>>123355196
This could work i suppose. Though Renderable sort of feels like a base abstract class for all renderable objects (kind of like what SFML does), which is not exactly the intention here.

How could one make a first person party turn based game challenging? It seems only Wizardry did it right, and yet I can't grasp what it was exactly. Legend of Grimrock was nice, but the combat wasn't challenging at all. Or I guess, it wasn't tactical besides constantly moving backwards or strafing.

Hey so, hacking is kind of like that popular idea about magic/sorcery/whatever:

You need to figure out other wizard/hacker's true name/identity in order to take them down.

Yes I know this is not a game idea, but I thought I'd share anyhow.

Starting my new game wih a friend at college and a friend who is really far away from us.

We've actually never done a program of this scale before. Our aim is to implement the main game system (Bullet-Hell, that is) before building the world we want to create. We're using SDL and I'm still kinda not at ease with the functions themselves.

Any advice on how to approach this? We have two programmers (My far-away friend and me) and someone who can also program, but is more willing to invest himself into dialogs.

I am extremely intelligent and have great taste in video games.

All games I own are highly acclaimed video games.

Everytime I try to play a shitty game, and fool myself "Yeah i like this game, alot of people like it!" I have a second nature respond and know its shit.

Everyone talked about Assassins creed being good, I pretended to like the game, but its shit and now everyone knows its shit.

Same with obsidian company filled with women talking about their emotions while the white privilaged code monkeys are conveniently swept into basements with dirt floor told to shut up and keep making funny "interesting" gaypanderfluid mustaschio men on the female queens requests.

Basicly, I'm better than most people at everything, I have excellent taste in movies, I'm just more intelligent than majority of people.

Which brings me to my point, I got 3 notepads of written ideas for a game I want to develope, but I dont know how to program.

I'm looking for a good beta to whatever I tell them, they must be reliable, I can pay for their ramen noodles, and small part of their rent, they will do alot of work, but they will not be entitled to 25% of my company or something like that even though it's kinda independent company, we wont make the mistake of notch who gave millions to workers because they were "buddies".

And the developer have to be good at programming, yet not grow a big head, or leak information, and be hold into a legal document so he can't steal my great game with the ideas, just because he thinks he is super important for being the only one knowing how to program.

I'm more than just an Idea guy, I'm the boss, ceo and leader, it doesnt matter if I cant program I*M in charge, also I can do basic mapdesign but still need to keep the programmer in his truthful subservient position without growing cocky or try to sabotage MY GAME, its not yours, you are not entitled to a big chunk, I can give you some rent money and food money but thats it, and I call the shots.

Game Maker obviously.

Sure, RPG Maker is all set up exactly for what you want, but that means it's set up exactly for what you want. What happens when what you want changes? You're going to have to redo all those scripts with Ruby.

Guys, I'd really appreciate some help this time. I thought this was bug proof, but it's giving me problems.

This is how I handle ball collision against a brick in a simple Breakout game.

>detect collision against BRICK
>check if collision point is inside inner collider (red ones)
>force a certain normal for reflection, depending on the inner collider

This shit is buggy as fuck, though.

Do you have any suggestions of how I could do this differently?

I cannot rely on Unity physics because it's too realistic and random.
>>
>>123365702

What about literal hand holding? Getting around a station or ship in microgravity seems nightmarish without grabbing onto handholds.

>>
>>123366069
Too random. If the ball goes against a corner, it shoots horizontally with a fucked up speed. I really need to force normals.
>>
>>123365987
>>What about literal hand holding? Getting around a station or ship i
Yes there will be couple of "missions" involving this.
As for the ship driving i will add some computer controlled movements where the player will have the option (but not he forced to) let the computer stabilize the ship for him on the desired course
>>
>>123366120
var flatNormal;
if(collision.Contacts[0].normal.x > collision.Contacts[0].normal.y)
flatNormal = Vector3.Scale(collision.Contacts[0].normal, Vector3.right).normalized;
else
flatNormal = Vector3.Scale(collision.Contacts[0].normal, Vector3.up).normalized;
>>

>>
>>123366538

It's probably worth pirating for that.

The quick rundown is that you've got an analog throttle control (thrust+ and thrust-) for the main thrusters and then yaw/pitch/roll, with a variety of stabilization modes, plus a mode where you instead thrust in the three axes.

The different stabilization modes are what's actually important, basically automatically orienting the ship in the direction of travel or opposite it or in various directions relative to the orbital plane you're currently on.

Normal stabilization too, of course, but the automatic orientation (so you can speed up / slow down properly) is what's actually useful, along with the orbital stuff and seeing visual lines of where you're going.
>>
>>123366767
>utomatically orienting the ship in the direction of travel or opposite it or in various directions relative to the orbital plane you're currently on.
i'm actually already planning on this, that is what i meant by the hand holding computer assists with piloting
I tried to use an xbox controller and the driving is actually much more comfy with it

Genuinely curious since many indie games fail to include some sort of multiplayer or coop mode over the internet and only have LAN capabilities, or they're extremely sub par like Risk of Rain

There's angles to think about in Asteroids. Space invaders just go back and forth.

>>
>>123371863
>cooperative Netplay
Doable, just read up alot how to build such a system. Make everything ready for online from the get go. Don't make a singleplayer first and then try to convert it to a multiplayer.
>200~ unique, not recolored monster sprites
Make 5 for dev purposes. If you get further along make another 10. Don't set your goal to 200 or you'll just be overwhelmed and disappointed.
>8 playable unique characters with varied movesets
Start with 3 unique characters. Add more if you get far enough in the game that everything else starts to be near done and still feel like adding characters.
>16 environments
Cut it down to 5 or less, start with just 1 for dev purposes. Again add more if you feel like it.
>32 bosses
5 or less and the same yadayada
>48 songs (1 per boss, 1 per environment)
If you're not making songs yourself then you shouldn't consern yourself with them early on. Think about sounds when you're further into development.

For anyone making their first game: SCOPE is the keyword for fucking everything. Overwhelming yourself with too big of a scope will just kill your motivation and the project.

You don't have options, you need to get a real artist or people won't even play your game for free (which is fine if you don't care). You can practice art and get better, or find an artist to work with (either pay them or somebody that likes working with you).

Even doing minimalism well takes an artist's sense of aesthetic. And in [Current Year] everyone is making games so your minimalist programmer art game is going to get zero attention.

Alrighty, i added first maneuver which the player can trigger via hotkey and then the ship ai executes it. When the ship is spinning in any way, this maneuver will completely stop the spinning. Very useful after collisions or some crazy flying where you are basically rotating all over the place.
The next maneuver will be speed stop, to stop the ship movement in space and later on i will also add some cool maneuvers for use in fights and such.

So in the end you're going to end up with these "maneuvers" that basically fire up the correct engines based on your orientation to go in the direction you want it to go? Why have this system in the first place then, if players can just use automated maneuvers?

unitfag, how can I increase an integer in a foreach statement, like say i have 2 players in game how can i have it have an integer of two, i have this at the moment

foreach (var Team1Players in PunTeams.PlayersPerTeam[PunTeams.Team.TEAM1])
{
Team1Count +=1;
}

but it just adds one every single frame, how do i write it so it adds one for every player in the foreach statement

Late 80's/Early 90's:
>coding from scratch
>everything has to be manually done
>extremely limited hardware
>very small audience since few people are interested in computer games

Result: Many classic games that continue to inspire people to this day, genres are invented, imagination runs wild, a lot of thought and love goes into nearly every game

Today:
>Unity/UE4/GameMaker does literally 90% of the work for you
>You can use a babby language like C# or Java, and computers are so fast it doesn't even matter how poorly you code
>Hardware is so powerful, your phone is immeasurably stronger than high end machines were 20 years ago
>Potential audience is massive

Result: A few meme games, an Earthbound rip off for millenials, 30,000 pixel platformers, and a genderqueer text experiment that examines patriarchal oppression in a termite colony

As a community, we've got to do better.
>>
>>123382569

>and though engines may have specific strengths or weaknesses, they are very rarely what reviewers or consumers would think. (Hint: it rarely has anything to do with graphics.)

This isn't really true. Unity's a black box proprietary engine, and until Unity 5 it didn't even have PBR or a halfway decent GI solution. The reason Unity games made on <5 all use stylized graphics is because Unity <5 had inadequate technology for making realistic looking games. Look also at Creation that Fallout 4 runs on. The modified Gamebryo base supports volumetric lighting and PBR, but doesn't support baked shadow maps. That's why all of the interiors in Fallout 4 look weird as hell - nothing has shadows. This wasn't an artistic choice of the Fallout team, but rather a limitation of their engine that they had to work around (probably resulting in the more stylized graphics Fallout 4 uses).

I mean sure, when you're comparing CryEngine and UE4 the quality of the game's graphics are up to the developer. But engines with graphical limitations exist and are everywhere.

Hey /agdg/.

As a student, i could do my exams with my current personal project. What are your opinions on this?

>pic related
>>
>>123395487
I should have phrased it better. HP is well, HP. Attack is the damage done (before reduction), defense reduces incoming damage by def*2 and agility increases critical hit chance (I roll a random integer between 1 and 100, then check if it's lower than AGI*2)
My question is: how should the enemy stats compare to player's stats? What's the adequate increment a weapon or armor should bring? Should I use small, or big numbers for stats? For example, the starting sword has +2 to attack, and the final one +10 (and a secret one that brings +15). Would you consider this satisfying? Keep in mind that, at the moment, the only way to increase stats is through equipment

>>
>>123395919
Thank you for clarifying.
I feel that you are going about this the wrong way. Instead of starting with the statistics and trying to derive the game from them you should imagine how you'd like the game to play and create rules which give you the desired result. When you know how the game is supposed to play out, how many attacks a given enemy is supposed to die to on average, the stats will come into place.

Remember, More Is Not Better. Use as few elements as you need to achieve the desired result.

Alright, I'll think about it. I still have school on 14th so I can probably do 3 days maximum anyway.
>>
>>123296090
Threads have now started to last 24 fucking hours.
>it's j-just the holidays
Yeah nah. This is what happens when you start running off every yesdev like Arikado.
>>
>>123399486
You could start right now too. It really doesn't matter, this isn't as strict as other jams.
>>
>>123399514
animeshitposters with no progress are triggered by actual devs
>>
>>123399514
The blogposting doesn't help either. Everyone is so slow to recognize blogposts as shitposts for some reason. Just a sad General altogether.
>>
>>123400135
This is true but agdg as a community has failed to clean itself up with or without yesdevs. When shitposters were attacking Arikado for instance they should have been reported but the tolerance for bullying and shitposting here is through the roof. It's not even worth scrolling through these threads trying to catch up anymore because it's just aimless chatter as usual.

Thanks shitposters.
>>
>>123400354
>When shitposters were attacking Arikado for instance they should have been reported but the tolerance for bullying and shitposting here is through the roof.
They might have been. It's not like they're breaking any rules.
>>
>>123400354
So because the mods don't delete bullying it's the /agdg/ community's fault?
What are we supposed to do when the shitposters don't get banned or deleted? The only thing we can do is stop giving them the attention that they crave
>>
>>123400354
I stopped bothering asking /agdg/ for design advice because almost everyone here genuinely believe that design isn't even a thing you need to study or seriously consider. As is this thread can't be anything but tech support and chatter.

Strategies to keep Lets Players off my game?

>use Prince songs for the soundtrack
>give my game an unsearchable title like "Free Online Game"
>unlimited DMCA takedowns
>make a game so unremarkable that no one will bother LPing it

>it's not breaking the rules
And someone posting a picture of a book for C programming is breaking the rules? Meanwhile we get dozens of strawpolls about namefag drama and just completely brainless shit getting spammed here all the time. I'm not one of those faggots who says "AGDG is dead" but this really is pathetic. 24 hour threads and all the yesdevs are gone. This community has been fucked up the ass for too long now it seems to have developed a prison bitch mentality for shitposters and even more disturbing is how many yesdevs have been actively driven out.

24 hour threads. Yesdevs get nothing but shit or minimal feedback. Shitposters consider themselves famous members of the community now.

There is no reason to stay here. Enjoy your next anime thread.
>>
>>123400354
>being a thin skin dev apologist
If you can't handle a bit of shitposting you don't really belong here.

The fact that you called him Arikado and not ___dev is another sign
>>
>>123400670
agdg has self policed itself in strange ways
>>
>>123400787
>And someone posting a picture of a book for C programming is breaking the rules?
No, what are you implying?

>There is no reason to stay here. Enjoy your next anime thread.

>>
>>123400670
You're going to stop asking for design advice because a few shitposters made you upset?
>>
What do you guys want people to post?
>>
>>123400787
>>123399514
This is why we need a /agdg/ board.
Right now we're a bunch of people forced to share a small ass room.
If we had a board, we could have another room to go to if someone starts getting annoying.
>>
>>123400847
This little faggot right here is 100% the problem.
>>
fuck off arikado nobody even knows who you are you sorry faggot
>>
>>123400781
Why do you not want free marketing? Over at Gamasutra devs are trying to figure out how to bait tubeworms into streaming their game so that they can save money on advertising. You can hate lets players and still use them for your own benefit.
>>
>>123401064

It already exists. It's 8ch's /agdg/, and no one uses it.
>>
>>123401053
Look how busy the thread is now, clearly this is high quality posting

>>123400990
I'm pointing out that innocent posts get deleted while ravenous cum drenched shitposts are left up all the time. It's the shitposters who report things they want to see removed, the average reader of agdg doesn't care enough about this board anymore to report anything and there's a reason for that.
>>
>>123401258
dont try to force humor, it will never work
go through your day and note down things you think are funny, it could be something stupid someone posts on 4chan, something stupid you saw someone do etc.
then work those things or similar ideas into your world as naturally as you can
>>
>>123401258
please don't force it
>>
>>123401025
It's not a few shitposters. I've tried this multiple times over the years. Design posts get very few responses. The few responses they do get are often inane. The kind you'd expect to hear from a gamer, not a developer.
>>
>>123401064
Good luck getting yourselves a whole board when you can't even manage more than 1 General thread every 24 hours. This thread here has been alive for over 26 hours. In the past few days threads have been drawling on for ages even with shitposters at full throttle.

Why am I even posting about it? I don't give a shit about any of you anyway.
>>
>people complaining about /agdg/
Have you people ever looked at /r/gamedev? That place is 90% shilling, postmortems, "how do I not fail", and "look at my tutorial I made" threads.
Not to mention plenty of actual discussion threads are deleted if it's too narrow or doesn't garner enough discussion.

I'd take the slow /agdg/ over /r/gamedev any day. At least we can talk openly about gamedev.
>>
>>123363294

I hate to break it to you but we are mostly gamers that want to make games. We aren't professional developers with amazing design ideas.

>>123401602
yeah its mostly shit but it still has more worthwhile reading material than this dump
>>
>>123401540
That's because this thread's behavior is chasing people away. If there were a more welcoming space more devs would come here.

Just look at /v/, the gamedev threads there have a lot of people who refuse to come post here and for a reason.
>>
>>123401768
I am
>>
>>123401602

/r/gamedev is like that by design. There's so many people trying to show off their games that they get corralled to "Feedback Friday" and "Screenshot Saturday" threads.

Apparently too much progress is a bad thing.

>/r/gamedev
At least they don't have cancer faggots actively trying to scare away every dev who makes them feel insecure about themselves. And I know for a fact blogposting about their personal problems and mental issues and failures in life is not accepted there like it is here.

So many of the shitposters here telling others to kill themselves are individuals who are literally in danger of committing suicide themselves that's how low their self esteem and mental state is.
>>
>>123399514
What happened to Arikado?
>>
>>123401806
>That's because this thread's behavior is chasing people away.
Exactly. I don't think it's something that can be fixed. There was a spirit about agdg that was here when I first became a regular that was slowly choked to death by ravenous little faggots who think the "culture" here is about shitposting and shaming everyone into having certain identities like this little shit fag >>123400847
who STILL won't leave. One or two mentally ill shitposters really has proven enough to cripple this place.
>>
>>123402025

samefag here
I am making a game with websockets. I wish there were more, I've started this in 2014 and still all I see is browserquest and that game from xkcd...
>>
>>123402025
Fagbreath and others were threatened by his game because he was making more progress than them at a faster rate so they desperately searched for something to troll him about like a placeholder graphic and just harassed the fuck out of him using memes and strawpolls until he finally left. These are the same faggots (or same faggot) who rants about devs like yanderedev using "premade Unity assets". They always find something about a yesdevs game to shitpost about and they don't stop until that yesdev leaves. I don't know if it's possible to stop them or save this place for this reason.
>>
>>123399514

>>123402025
People like this: >>123402341
kept shitposting about how he used a sprite from Cave Story as a placeholder.
He has long since removed that sprite and made his own, but every progress post he made would have nothing but bullying about how he's a thief.
>>

Could never and will never make anything of himself so he just sits around pissing his diapers about yesdevs all day.
