from my experience it's not worth investing resources into patrols. they will get surrounded and captured since the AI is shallow in the decision making department. eventually they will end up joining the capturing party and then you will have a decently large stack of bandits and militia harassing your villagers.

What i do is drop about 40-80 high level troops from my army after I capture a castle. Then i so the patrol trick. Then I tell theconstable to raise 50 peasants, and in a few days theyll be low tier-mid tier troops to defend your castle. Then, I always have 1)enough time to ride to it 2)the resources to defend it when I get there regardless of whether or not my army consists of 100 peasants

By the time you have lanced a single soldier, circled around, and lanced another I could have killed 10-25 troops on foot. Note that while this webm is on peasants with a good melee weapon + high power strike you can do much the same against normal troops as well. Especially if you are flanking them with OHKOs.

Lancing is very low reward for the commitment. High damage doesn't matter as damage higher than DED doesn't mean jack unless your character has weak power strike and low proficiencies. On a warrior build mounted archery >>>> lancers.

Lancers make competent soldiers. But for avatar its pretty weak mid-end game.

Not really -- Its actually pretty much exactly the same. Mounted Archery is a much safer way to kill such enemies as Demonic Magnus. Rune Bow is extremely good and enemy Demon Chargers are tough enough to survive a lancing.

If anything it is better to just sit out such fights if you are a Lancer as your troops losing their commander + going out of formation isn't worth some random glory kill.

I knocked him out in a single tilt, a few rounds ago, after I waited on one side of the arena for him to finish dispatching the other two opponents. He was thus nearly spent when I finally charged him and smacked him down in one hit. It felt unchivalrous.

In the penultimate round, we were allied, but I knocked out both of our opponents myself. The last one we were both charging at at the same time, from different directions, but I hit him first and took him out. He must have felt like I stole his glory.

Then in the final match, the third time he tilted at me, I did this sort of zig-zag motion as I approached him, then conked him on the head as he missed me with his lance, and ragdolled him from his saddle. He must think I'm a tricky bastard.

The HRE is actually kinda shit in 1257ad. They share borders with a lot of big factions and minor ones, and from my experience tend to have their shit kicked in by a simultaneous assault by the English and French. In one of my games Louis and Henry basically brofisted and bit chunks out of Germany like it was WWII.

Best factions to join are England and France. England especially because it has a shitload of lords and an ocean surrounding it to slow down invaders.

It's a common misunderstanding that weapon master only affects the number of points you can manually allocate to proficiencies and nothing else. The way it actually works is that along with the soft cap, higher weapon master means less experience in combat is needed to gain extra proficiency. Even if they made the same manual allocations, somebody with 10 weapon master would get much higher proficiencies from just combat than somebody with 2.

If anybody's interested in a legit update, I've made some pretty good progress but there's no shortage of headaches. Everything seems to work fine up until there's a reinforcement wave and then it bugs out for reasons yet to be uncovered. Once I get this fixed, I still don't know how to get the troops to look the same in each battle if it's even possible; would be nice to have each particular named unit keep a consistent look but the game just randomly generates faces.

Hey mr. unique troop mod, I thought up a useful feature sort of related to what you were doing. Is there anyway to know which of your troops are doing the killing? We never really liked how players could escape automatically after their imprisonment in “Caribbean!” or M&B games. This is a role-playing game after all, and the player should be in control of his own destiny. Besides, there were other oddities and some illogical things. For example, even after being held captive by forest bandits, players could run away from them with their gold, armor and weapons on hand, losing only some boots and a horse. Or losing a sword and gloves maybe, but keeping the horse.
So if you’re defeated in battle in Blood & Gold, here’s the list of not very pleasant option you will face:
All personal items are taken away by the winning side. This includes armor, weapons, horses and gold on hand (by the way, this is why it’s better to keep your money in bank in Blood & Gold).
You are sold into slavery — to work in a mine or plantations, depending on your luck.
You receive a prisoner robe and some work equipment.
You can try to escape from a mine or plantations, but if you’re caught in the process, guards won’t be too happy about it and will proceed to beat you pretty hard (all the way to lowering your base characteristics, like strength or intellect). So better act careful.
If you’re confident about your charisma, you could try talking other prisoners into rebelling and escaping as a group.
If your escape is successful, then, depending on your charisma and leadership traits, you could form a new troop of runaway slaves which will become another one of your parties.
With this troop you could try robbing caravans, attacking convoys, sell prisoners into slavery, thus taking revenge for your trouble.
If you’re concerned about your lowered intellectual level after taking some beating during your imprisonment, you could visit one of Catholic abbeys. Nuns will do their best to fix you up.

Lots of news to cover, lots of posts and images, I've tried to cut it into 4 posts for conveniences sake but I'll be posting more today, asking questions, taking requests/dares, etc.


The Kingdom of Swadia is on it's last knees. With an army of 1500 strong, the Vaegir marshal has been burning through a path of destruction and solidifying themselves as a military power.

This is perfect. Now that I have become marshal, I have a new big bad to convince the king to go to war with. My excellent relations with other lords and king graveth himself comes heavily into play here. With a big war and tons of territory being attacked, my controversy and fief limit are both reaching critical mass.
Fear not, swadians. King Harlaus was a fool and a failure. Swadia will not be gone for long...

Well this is not what I wanted.

I was hoping the Vaegirs would spread out and begin wrecking havoc across the kingdom of rhodoks, but instead they marshal their entire force and attack Dhirim. I have no time to gather the armies together, I must ride to defend it myself.

The fighting is bloody and fierce, but by gathering my troops into a chokepoint near the back and letting them funnel into sharpshooter fire, I manage to fend off the first assault. Their army is still massive, so they prepare another. They assault again, and are pushed back. Finally, King Graveth arrives along with 3 other rhodok nobles, and the Vaegirs break the siege just before the third assault. I scare away each lord individually, and begin systematically eliminating them one by one.

The fighting is fierce, and my army grows smaller with every battle. It is compromised almost entirely of sharpshooters and sergeants, and they perform admirably against the large contingent of mostly horsefuckers. Most of the lords are captured and the rest flee from my might.

Soon after the battle, Alburq castle is lost. It was a lost cause anyway, shame I lost some 80 elite units garrisoned there. I sally forth and begin conquering castles. Ibedeles, Yruma, Ryindar, etc destroying Vaegir armies left and right.

seeing the complete fiasco and fraud that Fallout 4 was, butchering everything that ever made a Fallout series game a motherfucking fallout, the same happened to Dark Souls 2. In the meantime I'll try to think of autistically complicated solutions such as prefab faces that are "helmets" for recruits and eventually made unnecessary due to helmets... that could be helped by "racializing" all the factions to a larger extent so that all Khergits look Mongloid, Sarranids North African, etc.

Is there a tag that companions have that saves their face? I poked around the module system to add a faction before and once tried to make lord personalities have more of an impact on conversation choices but beyond that I'm clueless.

Heroes only have one face code so their face just never changes. Regular troops differ from hero troops in that they aren't so much one troop but a troop template from which agents are created and they have 2 face codes between which each agent's face is randomly chosen.

If you aren't terrible you will level far more rapidly than your companions. This means that you will be able to apply trainer to elite troops more rapidly and your companions will constantly benefit from this. This is especially significant as INT companions level the slowest. This also means that your trainer will stack to train your elites much more rapidly once your INT companions finally do hit the elite threshold.

The only thing that matters is heavy infantry/cavalry. This is exactly why the romans killed everything that went up against them: they had heavy armored shock troops – the legionaries – that could just smash through literally any enemy formation. The same principle holds in Mount And Blade.

That is completely false, the Mongols used heavy cavalry as well as mounted archers. Talking historically they didn't use mounted units for a siege, they used siege engines alongside other tactics like attacking outlying settlements making them take refuge in the target city straining its food stores so if the stonethrowers didn't break down the walls, the residents would throw open the gates out of starving.

Mountain Blade wise yeah, they're not very good in sieges versus dedicated archer units since their bows have to be usable for horseback. Not that Knights are much better compared to dedicated infantry in sieges either.

If you'll look over my posts, you'll see I never said the mongols didn't use heavy cavalry. I merely said that, A, the horse archers were the main reason why the mongols were so successful, B, on their own without heavy cavalry support, horse archers are vulnerable to enemy heavy cavalry, and C, if you specialize in horse archers, with heavy cavalry only as support, then you will not be able to do classic sieges, as Mount And Blade requires in order to take castles.

Horse Archers + Archers are actually a very effective army composition in M&B. The Noldor and Ravenstern of POP for example absolutely destroy with this army composition.

Ranged troops tend to excel more in offensive sieges than defensive sieges. Mounted Archers; like heavy cavalry, still can function as archers in sieges. For balance mounted archers are inferior to dedicated archers in (most) mods but the same applies to heavy cavalry to heavy infantry as well.

Really sounds like you need to play more mods. Guessing you would love Swedish Mayo in particular.

The sharpshooter. For everything.
The swadian knight, for slaughtering armies 5 times my size in total war style cycle charges.
The sergeant, for holding a defensive line on the field and defending castles.
The huscarl, for taking castles and being second best to the sergeant at everything else. Those throwing axes do wonders in sieges. I made sure to stock up on them, even a small force can be the crucial difference maker in a siege. Huscarls/sharpshooters is the real fucking business.

Otherwise, i cannot deny what anon says. I only ever use about 30 knights at a time, but when i pull out a 100+ army of nothing but knights, get out of my way. Rhodok or not, im slaughtering whatever the fuck is in my way. I dont think the AI has any concept of how to deal with it. Its just a wall of blue text and then "you are victorious! 350 enemy casualties" or some shit, 2 minutes later. All you have to do is avoid their spawn and pull back to do cycle charges. Youll take a couple casualties from enemy heavy cav and the rare dumbass that gets bogged down in the enemy spawn mosh pit, ut ultimately it will rarely outright fail. Normally ill run with a 33/33/33 balance of sergeants, sharpshooters, and cav, and i pick up huscarls when I siege.


The mamuks are probably just as good as the swadian knights and the vaegir knights are a clear third, but I havent found use for anything else. Archers seem innately inferior to crossbows and crossbow units have shields and hammers. Horse archery seems OP as a personal skill but dogshit when actually massed in this game because heavy cavalry tears the AI up.

The romans smashed when they needed to smash and turrled up when they needed to hold. They could do anything they needed. They were not limited to a rulebook, their tactics and equipment evolved with each new encounter. Im playing native Warband right now and wanted to see how does the deal with marriage for female characters looks like, but when I did and wanted to load previous save, turned out that game already saved game on that slot, right after marriage ceremony.

Previous save is around 120 days before that happened.

Actually, I'm just a lowly int build. I just ride around giving battle commands without actually engaging anybody myself. On those rare occasions when I do join in combat, I just sort of sit back and fling arrows at the enemy. (I'm not a complete pleb, though. I at least go for headshots.)

No, the reason why we don't speak Mongolian is because they were incapable of effectively besieging European Castles, which are far stronger than fortresses found in the east and the Europeans being extremely skilled in the art of siege warfare as all combat in the 12th century revolved around the siege. Fortresses like the Krak des Chevaliers were considered fucking invincible, and Mongols could not afford to grind away their resources against pointless, endless sieges. Medieval Europe was ludicrously fortified compared to medieval China and Russia, IIRC the Norman Kings alone constructed thousands of castles themselves, with other kings such as Bela IV of Hungary also going on a castle building spree.

Additionally, any Mongol campaign into Europe was fucking suicide, they simply didn't have the logistic train to support the hundreds of thousands of troops that would be needed to push through Hungary, Poland, and the Holy Roman Empire in back-to-back siege warfare. Morale would have abandoned their forces early on, and eventually their food would have ran out.

Sieges often last for months or even years, especially European ones. Food would dry up quickly, and European peasants would prefer to burn their fields and hide in their Lord's castle then let it fall into the hands of heathens. Plus a serious Mongol invasion instead of the singular assault in Hungary would merely unite Christendom against a great new foe. Central Europe was actually bracing against the Mongols, but Bela IV ended up bleeding them dry by himself.

In my roleplay king harlaus was killed by the vaegirs and I took his place, renamed my lands "Kingdom of Swadia" and changed my culture to swadian, now so far 3 swadian lords have defected to me becauae cultural similarities, meaning I basically conspired to have harlaus meet his end so that I could be king of the plains.

He never rode with enough knights to justify his position as king of swadia anyway. My tiny 115 man army is more terrifying than harlaus ever was. Half the time i show up to a sieged castle and multiple lords will run away from me.

Get your king killed anon its super fun!
