It depends where you get your recruits from.

Village recruits will always end up as Spearmen/Skirmisher

Castle recruits will always end up as Retainers/Mounted Retainers

Town recruits are the best, they have different type of troops depending on the faction of origin.

And don't bother getting those 2 villages at the north, their recruits are shit. I recommend getting Sado and Mii-Dera, they have really decent and efficent infantry.

True there is a penalty, but it also means you can go in with a shield when necessary then twohand when not. Thats the main selling point to me, it saves weight since I don't need to switch weapons to use a shield, or go weaponless to use a shield. There are things in the game called party templates; bandit parties for example have a template consisting of some minimum number to some maximum number of a specific type of bandit and the parties spawn with some random number in between those. With AI lord recruitment, there are party templates called "kingdom reinforcements" that have min and max numbers of various low tier troops and they basically have parties of those spawned and then all of the troops added to their party until they have enough. They don't need to go to villages, they can just chill in a castle or town and it happens automatically. You can check out the kingdom reinforcements if you use Morgh's editor and check out party templates.

There are two reports basically, detailed casualties for names and descriptions of your troops dying and battle highlights for your troops' accomplishments. From the initial casualty report you can go to either (or skip both completely) and from either one you can swap to the other.

How do I do it? I get that I gotta hand out fiefs relatively evenly, but even then some people get pissy quick. I try holding feasts to cheer them up, but the lords who are the angriest don't show up.

Also, how do I get other kings to do trade agreements or non-aggression pacts? I have King Graveth at like 60 relations, and he still refuses all my treaties.

If you're honourable then goodnatured lords will love you forever and you can just give all of the castles and towns to them since they'll never defect. Everybody else is eventually going to despise you and many will defect, there's nothing you can do about it, just give them villages so they can't take anything with them when they go. Don't waste your time trying to keep everybody happy, it's literally not possible.

You can keep a small group of vassals tame if you and them both are very honourable, or if you BUTTER THEM UP (feast) constantly. With a large faction, defections are inevitable.

As for getting foreign lords to do what you want, relation is one factor. Another thing is making sure whoever is doing the talking for your sake has a decent charisma and persuasion skills. It also, obviously, should be a beneficial arrangement.

There's a handful of set personalities. Some are goodnatured, some are fucking assholes ("pitiless" or some shit), some are kinda sneaky ("cunning"?), most are just normal ("martial").

It's not like you have to restrict yourself to 1 fief per lord. There aren't a huge number of them but I usually have each owning like 1 town and 2 castles or more.

There are hints in various conversations, though hopefully you've got high honour in which case you can pick them up as the guys that automatically have good relations with you even if you've barely met them. You get an automatic +1 relations with all goodnatured lords for every 3 honour. If they're ever a dick in conversation then they aren't goodnatured. Look for the ones that say positive things about you letting enemy lords go in battle.

Nah goodnatured lords don't seem to lose relations over fiefs being handed out, so you can be confident that even with you doing nothing to keep them happy they'll just remain happy with you. That's another way you can identify them. If somebody gets mad at you for giving a fief to someone else, that tells you right away not to give them anything more than villages.

Maybe. Indicting lords pisses everyone off so it's generally something you want to avoid; but you definitely want to do it if they might go negative and leave and if your faction is still in early stages and you see it as inevitable, then it might be better to get that out of the way while there aren't too many lords to upset. If you actually have reasonably high relations with them then it can still be manageable; especially if you give them turns at being marshal.

Does anyone know why I am suddenly getting such horrible performance? A year ago, I would get about 130% or so, and the game ran flawless on the highest settings. I only had to lower settings when I increased the battle sizes to higher than 300.
Now I am getting FPS drops down to mid 20s. I tried lowering everything to the bare minimum, but it only increased FPS by about 5.

All my drivers are up to date, integrated graphics are disabled. Only difference between now and before is my OS, I had windows 7 and I upgraded to 8.1.

PC specs are i5 4670k, gtx 770 2gb, 8gb ram.

First : The troops from neutral forts are mainly here as fodder. Except the Sado returnee (upgrade of the exilee) wich is pretty well armored and armed.
Second : In villages you can recruit the lowest troops (spearmen and skrimishers). In Castles and Towns you recruit samurai wich are more powerful and specialized troops.
and Third. Don't bother using the skirmishers from villages, especially bowmen. You can use the Teppos if you play Gekonew but that's it. Hire jizamurai and make them into either archers or gunners.
Upgrade villagers into elite spearmen (depends of their faction); set your gunners/archers; and enjoy pike and shot warfare.

Bows are only useful when wielded either by companions, hatamoto archers or Elite Onnabushis because they get the war yumi and ceremonial arrows. Any unit that do not uses this combination is bullshit.
at your level better use either the Samurai Gunners or the Teppos. (hint : firearms proficiency is not that different between ashigaru teppos and samurai gunners unitl the hatamoto grade)
Also you're free to not use it but here's how I display my troops at every battle : S (spearmen) H (infantry) R (ranged)

that way your spearmen will hold the charging ennemies. Then just tell your infantry to charge the speared ennemies and you've won

Regarding the mod that adds improved animations to spears, ie, upstab, crouch, one handed upstab, pike bracing, will this affect polearms that have both thrust AND swing attacks such as halberds? As we all know, all thrusting weapons from swords and daggers to polearms are completely fucked. Does the mod listed in the op and pastebin ONLY affect spears and pikes or all polearms?

By default you'd have to manually flag weapons yourself with morghs
You do have to choose between upstab or overswing though, but you generally decide depending on the weapon (ie you'd always put upstab on a spear but not a long axe, but maybe a halberd depending on the weapon)

A general rule of thumb is that if it has a straight point then it has upstab, and poke oriented no shield polearms can be braced, and polearms usable with shields will probably have 1h upstab and upstab

If you're doing it yourself I'd advise giving shorter polearms overswing and longer ones upstab unless they aren't really thrust focused

The VC submod is in the OP and has all that, the spears also have sideswings for low cutting damage due to an odd quirck in VC where the AI won't upstab unless the weapon has sideswings

The big number is total garrison, and it's about 50/50 spears/crossbows, so they'd support the shield wall. Hopefully I can ride to defend most of these castles, but you never know how many wars you'll be in.

I'm doing three things(diplomacy) in repetitive runs around Calradia

1)enlisting large patrols/sending them back to reinforce

pretty easy to test the distinction between no bonus damage on arrows and bonus damage on arrows if you just mess around with morgh's, it's pretty big

Nobunaga wasn't truly a pure Westaboo but simply an eccentric that loved foreign cultures in general. Under Hideyoshi they stopped using Ironclad warships (which caused their navy to get REKT by Korea) and Hideyoshi hypocritically enforced the caste system once again. Under later generations of the Tokugawa Japan ended up becoming completely isolationist.

Nobunaga was great and deserves all the praise.

I think people hear "monks" and assume they were pacifists or something. The Ikko-Ikki would openly plot political assassinations, military campaigns, and offer havens to criminals that they would later militarize for their own ends. They even caused problems for Uesugi Kenshin whom was perhaps one of the few truly pious Budhhists of that era.

Battle sizes at 150. I tried playing with 300, game literally ran at 1-5 fps.
Temps are CPU at 42c and GPU at 38c, using 23% power.

It is, yeah. I think that's the issue as the dory does more damage with the upstab. It still does less than with normal stab and often does 0 damage, but then so does the normal stab when it plinks off of guys too close.

At least they should. I only last really tested this in Floris when I found out if you level up over 63 you go up to like 65,000 something.

The problem is that they are considerably harder to mass produce, which is why I've elected to focus infantry recruitment on the Nords and crossbow recruitment on the Rhodok recruits

The reasoning being that their line of progression doesn't get shields until Sergeant, meaning they are an extremely vulnerable infantry force for the majority of their lifespan, and in recruitment armies you'll usually have a bulk of veteran spears waiting to upgrade to Sergeant, and they're prone to die in large numbers. Nord veterans on the other hand have shields and a throwing axe, so they're a more-than-capable shield wall that takes minimal causalities and gets plenty of experience.

I'd say I probably have 50 sergeants spread around, and probably another 1000 spears that have the potential to become them, but I'd rather spend the time on a sharpshooter/huscarl combo

My companion investment was uniformed and I only recently started leveling trainer highly, this is my first file after all and I just stuck with it. That being said, no matter what your trainer is, it's always efficient to drop off your huscarls/sergeants somewhere as soon as possible and pick up more recruits, so no matter what you will always have veteran spears in your army, which notoriously die because they don't have shields and take axes to the face.

Swadia got their shit royally pushed in, and that was back when I was a merc defending their dwindling domain. They were down to a single castle, and Graveth's indecisiveness was the only reason they even still exist. I personally made a late effort to keep them alive, just because I've always planned on rebelling but it's never been the right time because my settlements were so poorly defended.

No longer, anything I can't ride to will hold out long enough to ride to, and even if I don't have a proper army with me, (a huscarl wall/me with a polearm + with crossbows)x Every castle/town = almost perfect defense.

I am married to his daughter, maybe that bond will hold through kings and politics.

I reach Klargus, who is his posse of lords. They could be my posse with ease due to their friendship and respect for me, but we're on campaign and so they'll only follow the marshal

Graveth might be King, but his efforts have always been focused on feasting and awarding himself with territory he didn't conquer; all know the true power of Rhodoks: Count Klargus the Marshall, and Lord Jerv of Swadia,

I arrive with some 70 Nord Veterans and my band of noble cavalry. This means that my first engagement will be composed entire of infantry, and I'll take casualties. This is intended, as I'm trying to get as many huscarls as possible right now.

Count Klargus is heading East to deal with our new wars. No doubt he will conquer whatever he puts his sights on. I'm instructed to scout the area, from Tihr to Odasan. Fucking hassle, but I agree and head west towards Tihr alone while Klargus and the rape brigade head East.

Upon arriving at Tihr, King Ragnar sallies forth from the town to confront me. I could easily maneuver around his bloated army of fresh troops, but honor demands I engage.

The first engagement is bloody on both sides. With cavalry support, my band of nord veterans hold firm while I desperately slash at dozens of archers. Half of my original line melts but I manage to rally them and push them back with the help of reinforcements.

The second round goes much more smoothly with my cavalry now supporting me after my veterans were cut down somewhat. They did their part, and got plenty of experience.

The third round is basically a mop up.

Because I intend to rebel, and my honor must be maintained in order to attract lords, I allow King Ragnar to go. It was good fun for both of us, was nordic/10 would do again some time.

28 huscarls born from that battle. I head east after successfully scouting Tihr. I begin my journey along the coast towards Odassan.

It's useful for bandit lairs and sieges, they get a lot of kills on foot with them so they're basically proto-dragoon rhodok sharpshooters on steroids, you can dismount them and put them behind the shield wall and they work as a pretty good missile force that can easily defend themselves in melee.

The problem is the bow and bolts take up two weapon slots that could really complement their use as heavy cavalry. I give mine a lance and two-handed weapon instead of a bow and bolts.

Even if you're sticking with infantry for most of your forces, ~5 heavy cavalry can really be invaluable. Especially if you are playing with pre-battle orders and deployment. I suspect you are because I think it comes packaged with diplo.

A handful of heavy cavalry are great at screening your archers, protecting them from enemy cavalry. In the prebattle orders and deployment mod, the enemy AI are much smarter than in native, and actually use formations and try to flank. Maintaining a small group of cavalry of your own is fantastic at keeping enemy cavalry away from your archers. They're also great for pinning enemy cavalry so your infantry can catch up.

in versions later than 1.153 you can just turn it on by setting it to 1 in the module.ini

It is. The deployment phase is nice, but the best part is the much smarter AI. Heavy cavalry aren't absolutely unstoppable anymore, because the AI doesn't march single-file into open fields anymore. Spearmen will actually form spearwalls to stop cavalry charges.

It also buffs spear damage vs horses, so it's much easier to unhorse Swadian knights. Especially as the Rhodoks.

But it's not all just buffs to infantry. Cavalry get greatly buffed charge damage, so it is actually viable now.

Basically yes. The AI looks at the numbers of a garrison, not the quality. You can throw 100's of peasants into a garrison in native, and almost every AI lord will just leave it alone.

AUTISM UPDATE

With an army of mostly sergeants/veteran spears/crossbows, I stumble upon the Vaegir Marshal and his posse, rushing eagerly towards a recently captured Swadian castle garrisoned by only 80 men. 20 lancers, but they're not too bad on foot. The marshal's army is large and bloated, but my men are untested and low-tier. Still, if I don't hurry the Vaegirs will conquer it with ease, so I rush past them. I encounter Count Kurnias with a small band outside the castle and defeat him. Afterwards I quickly siege the castle. Having recently started their war with Swadia, the Vaegir army, which has now just arrived, has no desire to start a war with us, and so they're narrowly stopped in their tracks and get to watch as Lord Jerv does his thing.

I charge my fresh bodies up the ladder while putting bolts in enemy crossbows. A few minutes of heavy bloodshed and the castle is ours.

I send my request to Graveth. No doubt he'll accept, but it's worth a shot. Eventually, hopefully, there is a small chance he denies me one of these times. Off to find more recently conquer-and therefore weak-castles.

I figure I don't need to be a tank, or even really a very good warrior, because any time I need to actually fight on my own, such as in a tournament, I can just make up for it with a combination of skill and savescumming (mostly savescumming).

And in any case, there aren't very many situations where I need to fight on my own. Admittedly I've never played very far past the early game, but it seems to me it's more important to be a good battle commander than a fighter.

Actually, what I typically do is position myself between the crenellations, at the very top of the ladder, trying to keep as close to one side as possible so that my troops aren't obstructed from passing by me. Then I can just sit there and crossbow or shortbow snipe, and enemies almost never come after me or shoot at me.

If you stand in the exact spot I always stand in, none of the defenders in either of the flanking towers have line-of-sight to you. The only times I've ever gotten shot during a siege since I developed this tactic have been when I've been stupid and stepped out from between the crenellations to try and shoot somebody who was slightly out of my own line-of-sight.

As for running out of ammo, I typically just take a quick jaunt down the ladder and run around in the grass looking for bolts or arrows left in the ground by the defenders when they were shooting down at my first few waves.

If I truly run out of ammo, and can't find any spent ammo lying around, then I usually just retreat back to the spawn point and let my men finish the battle. Usually by that point I've killed quite a few enemies myself, so I figure I've contributed enough, and I'll just let them finish the job.

So the castle was awarded to me, oh well. I pull half of Dhirim's garrison to defend it. I take a small force of huscarls along with my sergeants and crossbows to Narra, which is only defended by 100 sarranids and rhodok traitors. The great thing about the state of affairs right now is that territory has been going back and forth and nobody has time to properly garrison. One of their lords has a force of 100 outside Narra. I attack them first.

I take casualties but we rout them easily. Onward to the town.


My overwhelming crossbows silence the sassy archers on the walls, and my huscarl/sergeant combo smashes through their unprepared defense. The town is easily taken with minimal casualties. Round two, let's see what happens. Either way, it's Town #5 and Castle #8 for Lord Jerv.

Nah it's been like that since I first made the character. I've always had the idea of being a lowly Swadian noble and rising through the ranks and eventually becoming King, but my plans changed when Graveth and Ragnar hammered the shit out of Swadia and I chose to abandon my mercenary contract with Harlaus to side with Rhodoks, where I became a lord. Count Klargus was marshal in Swadia before joining Rhodoks with me, and after I served as marshal for a short time, I gave it up and Klargus became marshal of rhodoks. I kind of regret that now because it would have been easier to rebel with higher controversy, but oh well.

Can you just not ask for the castle you conquered, and when he doesn't reward it to the most deserving (you), then you rebel? Or is that not how rebelling works. Also to anyone reading. How do you take the first castles? When you ask a lord to follow you, will they help siege? I've had enough troops to siege myself but I mean before that, when you don't have quite enough troops to go it alone, but you're big enough to rape most lords in the field.

Yes, that's how rebelling works. Problem is, 14 successful sieges and I've only been denied once, and that was when I was marshal and had high controversy.

you can ask other lords to help you but you have to have a high engineer skill or they'll likely leave before you're finished building ladders/towers, they'll stick around for about a day until you have to ask them to follow you again to reset it. Friendly lords will follow you, and if you're marshal they pretty much have to follow you.

Warsword might be updated soon...ish, i hope, with a lot more shit and Floris is Floris vainilla as hell with some nice touches and others that are kinda meh.
Gekkokujo is also really good if you like feudal Japan or Brytenwalda, for Dark Age brits. ACOK, if you like Song of Ice and Fire or the series, but only if you can stand annoying "feautures" in the last two.

1257AD is pretty solid and if you like realism is quite good. Sands of Faith for that crusader vibe with really nice looking armors and horrible font.

Nova Aetas if you don't care to lose a 800 day character because you decided to make your faction the most advanced of Calradia.

Would you be interested in a mod that completely reworks the way battles work? It may sound weird, but it autoresolves combat. That's right, it removes the ability to play battles on the field, but it adds new automatic combat mechanics and some interactivity. I started it some months ago for personal use, and now it is mostly done (scripting and programming wise) with only graphics and flavor to be added if I wanted to release it. Some features:
-All battles are now auto-resolved (but you can still manually fight at bandit lairs or ambushes)
-Completely reworked combat, units have skirmish and shock values, combat modifiers can be applied depending on several factors (including terrain or companions)
-Choices can now be taken during some phases of a battle, some of which are culture specific
-Reworked morale (it now increases the fighting ability of your troops and reduces the possibility of a rout) and a hidden discipline value (increases the chance of having a favorable combat choice called "strategem")
-New traits upon leveling up (Infantry tactics, Archer tactics, Siege tactics, Cavalry tactics, Strictness, Inspiration)
-Combat has 8 phases (1 start, 2 skirmish ones, 2 shock ones, 2 flanking ones, 1 finale), after each one you get a description of how the battle is progressing (favorable, unfavorable, neutral)
-Each army has 3 flanks (right, middle and left), the troops of each one you can modify at the camp menu
-Can appoint companions as Generals of the Right, Middle and Left, who benefit each flank according to their skills
-Army sizes drastically increased (you don't get to fight on the field, so no performance issues), you can expect King Harlaus to field 12,000 soldiers at the beggining of the game, recruitment is obviously also easier
-Bridges can be destroyed and repaired if you are near them via camp menu (the AI will do it too!)

-Some castles which have impassable terrain on both sides of them are now called "Passes". If you are hostile to a faction holding a Pass, you cannot cross it (pic somewhat related, Almerra castle will become a Pass, with walls extending to both mountains on the campaign map). As you can imagine, this is especially benefiting for the defending the Rhodok kingdom
-Training fields now belong to factions (cannot use hostile ones) and become MUCH MORE effective (there is a "train the army" option). Of course, there is also an appropriate cost to using them
-3 neutral factions, each controlling 1 or 2 castles at the outskirts of the map. Bandits can now attack holdings and found mini-factions (Calradian Empire, Northern Kingdom, Southland, etc)
-Campaign AI significantly improved, both on the field and with diplomacy (my mod has some "Diplomacy" features included)

And yeah, that's it. Some may be concerned that this will end up being a "numbers win any battle" mod, but that's not true. I think it is very balanced and you can definitely win battles where you are outnumbered with the right army composition and positioning, as you can also lose battles where you outnumber the enemy if you are unlucky and pick shitty combat choices.

Well look no furthrer battle brothers

1.Get cheat engine
2. Start game
3. Start cc
4. In cc, pick warband proess
5. Change value of dead bodies to 0 in game
6. Search the value in cc
7. Change value of dead bodies to 5 again in game
8. Now you should find the value. Change it to whatever fits your need in cc
You should also save it so once you launch the game so you can just launch and edit the value (as game resets it since its stored in ram)

Works in multiplayer btw, but lags like hell because engine is shit.

Ha, I wouldn't have guessed that this feature would be so popular, but the way I did it wasn't as complicated as what you might think. I achieved it with a script. If I have less that 0 relations with a faction controlling the pass, it creates invisible impassable terrain in a line just behind the castle (which affects only enemies obviously). The wall extensions are merely graphical. While testing it, I was once trapped in enemy land 'cause my liege randomly declared war on the Rhodoks, so you might not want to linger too much inside them.

Definitely. I should mention however that just this script doesn't make it complete. In order for it not to be broken, you need to be able to attack a pass from both sides (otherwise it would be a poorly implemented feature). I achieve that by also increasing the range of what I call "settlement interaction". This means that you don't have to go at the center of a holding to get the options (raise volunteers, visit tavern, siege).

Remember, the AI has been reworked, you will find lords acting in a more stragetic way, especially the field marshal. However, now that you said it, if a lord is inside the interior of a pass the second a war is declared and he isn't willing to attack it, he might enter a loop of trying to get through it and getting recoiled by the terrain. But then again, lords don't normally enter a neutral's faction land for no reason... I will test it somehow.

To a point where one wishes to have real borders.

Phantasy Calradia lets you create undead army and become lich (Not recommended before killing off that cleric faction) while blasting whole armies alone with magic

If you are the king of your faction you can invest denars to upgrade the tech of your faction (New troop trees when you can combine a unit of knights on foot, riflemen and conquistadores or whatever you like most) but when you reach the top level and invest one more denar the whole save file goes to shit.

So yeah, lost my entire empire just because i managed to get an economically stable realm.

Patch Notes
-All new map with even more visually pleasing aesthetics
-2 two garrisons to manage and report!
-My two villages-to award to lords when I inevitably become king-are now marked.
-whole new key with more information!
-now tracking general "crossbows" with sharps as a footnote
-sergeants are now being tracked (information my be unreliable)
-My companions keep asking for 3000 gold to stay, 3 of them at least. It's turning out to be around 10,000 gold every few days just to keep them around. Reeeeally need to become king so I can give them fiefs and get them out of my hair for good.
-AI changes turned off to increase the likelihood of being denied a thief
-Controversy is now being actively pursued

I split my Dhirim garrison between Narra and Dramug Castle, my two newest acquisitions, and head back to suno to pick up more rhodok recruits. As soon as I get there, Narra is put under siege. I hastily arrive and garrison the town with my fresh soldiers. I don't want to fight with them, so the longer this goes on, the better my army will become. I wait it out for about 2 days until most of my recruits are now veterans, and Emir Kramuk sees this and abandons the siege. I leave my elite garrison and charge him with my fresh rhodok troops, they need the experience after all. His army is mostly cavalry and lancers, so I suffer about 40 casualties (20 killed/30 wounded), but they're low level troops so this was anticipated. After leaving Suno with tribesmen, I now have 30 sergeants and 25 sharpshooters.

I drop off my elite troops and head back to Suno to pick up more, when a message arrives from King Graveth.

It seems my recent exploits have been noticed. I'm offered the marshalship for the third time. I need controversy right now, so this is perfect. Hopefully I can get it raised to 100, and eventually one of the fiefs I conquer will be denied to me. This process will go much more easily now that I can use other lords as meat puppets in sieges. It seems the path to rebellion is more clear than ever. I have work to do ;)

Not really. You just need to walk forward and make a downward thrust. I use them to poke people walking up stairs in a siege from the castle walls when I forget to bring my poleaxe.

Well it would help keep off bandits and such of course. But not lords.
One anon earlier ITT is doing some script that transforms the pass in the game into actual pass that will block ennemy parties who will be forced to either siege the pass's castle or turn back.
That's how I think borders should work.
Of course nothing should stop lords from crossing a plain but a kingdom shouldn't be able to capture a town deep into ennemy territory
To fix that I propose a modified list of priority for sieging :
Along with the known factors we had the factor of proximity, we should have more importance than the others,

He comes back. I've experienced this glitch before but I've forgotten how to fix it. I want the fucker to stop following me for good. He stalks me everywhere and it's fucking annoying as he constantly initiates conversations and he has a higher pathfinder skill than me. It also seriously kills immersion.
