Most people use tap jump off, and use X or Y for jumping. Many use the C-stick for aerials. There are people who keep tap jump on and use it interchangeably with X and Y to jump. There are people who use the A button for aerials. Hell, there are people that use the R for jump or even attack, or X for special moves or shield. But tap jump off, X/Y to jump, C-stick for aerials is the most common. Personal preference really, whatever you feel the most comfortable doing. I use A for aerials and keep R set to jump for when I play Peach. Nairo keeps setting default for everything.

See, I tried using X/Y to jump and the C stick for aerials, but I couldn't move my thumb from X/Y to the C stick to hit the auto-cancel window for moves like Nair or Dair. So I started using the right trigger for jump, since I can quickly press the trigger with my index finger and use my thumb immediately on the C-stick. BUT the trigger is so damn deep that now I'm having a lot of trouble shorthopping.

So basically for my jump scheme, with the face button, I have trouble with autocancel, but with the trigger I have trouble with shorthop.

You could also try double sticking. If you leave tap jump on, you can jump with the control stick and do an aerial with the C-stick at the same time and the aerial comes out frame perfect. I just have trouble short hopping with tap jump at times which is why I've gotten so used to using A for aerials.

The problem with using A for aerials is that it becomes hard to do stuff like move left and shorthop/ dair while keeping your momentum moving you left.

You'd have to move the stick down for a brief moment to Dair and that would cut your momentum moving left
