Play literally any of the RPGs and you will be driven into the ground with how wrong you are. The mainline games still have their charm but they know their place and do not let things like that have any chance of interfering with gameplay.

Take something like the Boost or Adventure formula, tweak it, and put it in fun, original levels that are strictly 3D. The story should be fun, lighthearted, and have actual stakes and more in tune with an action adventure story
