This. Much more potential than le boring swordsman roster. I admit Zelda is the same conceptually but it's much more fantasy-like than FE so some creative liberties were obviously taken.

FE is a little too "real" to make for an interesting musou spin-off, I feel, and most of the hype for the idea looks to be riding off of Hyrule Warriors. I don't think it would work without feeling too samey, it would need something to differentiate itself.

Even in games like Hyrule warriors you had to use some strategy when the mission involved capturing/defending an objective since the maps are so big and the battles between your forces are dynamic. If you just run around trying to kill shit you will quickly find yourself getting overwhelmed.

The reason FE would work better as a Musou instead of something like Zelda is because not only is it more fitting thematically, but they can also actually implement more strategic elements from the FE series on top of this.

I don't know if you've noticed, but FE has been around for a long ass time and now it's actually getting popular. Pretty soon it will become one of Nintendo's flagship series. It's certainly more relevant than F-Zero, Metroid, or even Star Fox at this point.

The point is that it's still "fantasy" and there is plenty of material in order to make interesting scenarios. I didn't even bring up some of the other things like time/dimension traveling via the outrealms, risen/faceless/morphs, transforming beast people, the Fire Emblem itself as a magical MacGuffin, and actual political intrigue between warring nations instead of just "the forces of evil" (at least until the end of the games)

The reason it wasn't as popular outside of Japan in the past is because they never actually advertised it well. The one game they actually DID advertise (Awakening) sold like hotcakes, and every time a new Smash game comes out we have countless new players jumping into the series to check it out.

Plus ya know, they're actually making new games for both the main series and spin-offs like #FE. The amiibos and special editions are selling out everywhere too. Plus they can use characters like Lucina and the gay marriage mechanic to push the fact that they're "so progressive".

It's not surprising that when you actually bother to give a series exposure it starts to do well, this is only the beginning of a new age in the FE series and its popularity will only continue to rise.

I think in terms of merchandising and visibility, yeah, FE will never catch up. Especially when you factor in the demographic and the content of the series. I wouldn't mass produce plushies or pencil-cases marketed towards children using a series focusing on war and with implications of incest, rape, etc.

Financially and hype-wise, though, Nintendo will probably hone in on the growing and older player-base of FE. They'll market it much differently from Zelda or Mario, since FE can't lend itself to the hyper-visibility of the other series, merch or advertising-wise. Plus it really doesn't need to be as explicitly big as Pokemon.
