You need to get a hell of a lot more Perfects than Misses to get through a tough section this way.

Keep in mind that these are tools for scrubs, not for people who can already play decently.

I know, but my point is that simply finishing won't make you better. You don't need to finish with a C combo rank, you need to be able to get enough greats, nices, and perfects to balance the bads and misses. If you're consistently trying to beat a song with no progress in your ability to clear that hard section being made, then you're probably not at that level yet and should work harder on lesser but still very difficult songs and work your way up again. A guard won't help you not struggle and fail super hard in the bad sections, a healer and perfect locker will.

Simply finishing is the start. That's why guard cards are important.
As you get better, you can swap them out for perfect locks, and then eventually go with a score upper team as the final stage. You can put in a few healers if you're still unsure, though.
I use guards to get to the point where I can actually make progress. Having a guard card won't magically work against that just because I don't see a life reduction. I can still note if I get bads and misses.

An active guard does what a simultaneous lock + heal activation essentially does.

The active guard alleviates the effect of misses and bads during a segment that occur as you try to get the timing and motions down.
An active lock + heal offsets any effect of misses and bads under the condition that you don't accumulate any misses while they're active.
The difference is a rather crucial if you're wanting to practicing a segment that you don't quite understand.

Guard is less circumstantial at the cost of being less useful overall.
