The DPS check of Thordan really isn't that high. You skip that last sacred cross with a decent group, even my first clear had like 4 deaths in final phase and we only saw 2 dragoon jumps and never got to sacred cross.

That being said, PLD "shines" in thordan EX because lol physical tank busters, but divine veil is fucking trash. You can live the primal AoE with just succor and soil, so having a SCH period makes veil pretty irrelevant.
The other thing is really just that tank busters are tank busters, plus most anyone who even meets the i190 requirement to go in is probably more like i200, so PLD's only "advantages" in Thordan EX don't really mean shit.

Divine veil isnt for the aoe, its for stuff like Tethers + Shiva circles or meteor phase. It negates pretty much any mistakes dps could make which is the only thing that can actually wipe a group.

I'm done with these long ass queues and I really want to help make the wait less for others so I was going to roll up a tank, but I'm not a big fan of giant axes so its either of the remaining tanks.
I like the sword and board of the paladins but you guys keep shitting on the class and I don't think I have it in me to level yet another class all the way from the bottom. Is it still worth it, or is PLD just way too bad?

While PLD isnt as "good" as WAR or DRK, it can clear content just like the rest of the classes. The difference in how "good" the class is is minimal compared to how well you play the class. I'd take a mid range PLD over a shit WAR/DRG any day

I've been in more than a handful of PUG farm parties where having a DRK over a PLD as the main tank is the difference between consistently clearing before Sacred Cross makes Thordan invulnerable, and having to actually burn Zephirin down enough to survive SC and deal the last 1-2% to Thordan after Sacred Cross goes out. And even one party that would consistently win but would get Sacred Cross every time, and DRK versus PLD on the Sacred Cross burn was the difference between surviving it and dying to it.

It's a pretty small range over which DRK's higher MT DPS actually matters, and to get there you need to be in a situation where 2-3 of the DPS are slacking, the OT is hundreds of DPS behind, and the healers aren't contributing anything, but there IS a range where it makes a difference,


PLD is a lot safer for that fight and probably better for it overall, but the catch-22 there is that most of the time, if a group is good enough that the extra DPS from DRK isn't going to ever make a difference, that group is also good enough that the extra mitigation from PLD isn't going to ever make a difference - and DRK's DPS will get the clears a little bit faster.

That is how it works. Divine Veil is just on a 150s cooldown, so you can only do it once every two and a half minutes.

Question, I am not in a FC but have been trying to gear a lot the past week, barely hit 60 about 4 days ago, I know I need pug 12 and marauder 26 as well as a better weapon, but what is roughly the bottom line gear for Thordan EX to be considerate and start learning? Also am I missing anymore todos? I plan to farm out a hive weapon tomorrow or so. I just replaced my hat with the 200 void hat before maint.

I know Diadem farming is the place to be in general for gear though. And sorry for completely asking a question not related to this chain of replies.

You should try to have an Esoteric weapon, and as long as you have that and you meet the minimum iLevel requirement, you're perfectly fine to start learning Thordan.

You could get away with a Hive weapon if you were learning it with people you know, but if you're concerned with being considerate, overshooting the weapon requirement to the game's current 'standard' is a good rule of thumb.

Well, that's true of pretty much every fight in this game, including the ones that are harder.

But I think that talking specifically about main tanks in Thordan, they did a pretty good job of making a fight where PLD and DRK are really well balanced against each other.

DRK's higher DPS is actually pretty damn helpful during the fight's DPS burns, but the places where DPS is important tend to actually be short burns, rather than requiring consistently high DPS across the overall fight. Whereas PLD is only "okay" on those parts, but excels so much at the required mitigation of the fight that they end up needing significantly less attention from healers.

And even for party-wide utility, you have DRK with Reprisal, able to apply weak-but-frequent mitigation of raid damage across pretty much every part of the fight, compared to PLD with Divine Veil, able to apply really strong raid shielding to a handful of the most dangerous raid damage bottlenecks.

It's a really good fight, and a real breath of fresh air after Savage Alexander (and even, to a lesser extent, FCoB).
