anyone here had any experience with making online multiplayer games with unity? i realise now that ive bitten off more than i can chew making a massive game all by myself and im almost out of money while being no where near finished

Yeah, it definitely worked, but here's the problem with indie multiplayer games: someone logs on to play, see that there's no one else online, so they leave. And that happens anytime anyone wants to play. It's very hard to maintain a playerbase. If you REALLY want to make one, I'd suggest looking into using Photon. Their free license provides hosting for up to 20 concurrent players, which will probably be enough for you. If it's not, you can upgrade to 100 users for a $50 one time fee.

I think most people will say placeholders but it I think it entirely depends.

For example, for your player character, I recommend making a a rough model/sprite that will be about the same size as the final asset. Maybe some rough animations so you can get a feel for the controls. This should also go for enemies or characters which the player interacts with.

Use blatant placeholders (blocks/whatever) for non-important things. Such as moveable crates, powerups, or anything else that doesn't really change the gameplay so early in development.

I currently am 2 months into writing an engine based on top of SFML but SFML, SDL and all those libraries are actually frameworks, not really engines. 2d ones usually just do it by some quick math involving the facing of the tank and where the hit came from

3d ones could do the same thing but it's actually less realistic than just having discrete sections (for example, the armor behind a tread is probably different in thickness from the actual rear armor of the cabin, and the front armor is gonna be way different between the front of the cabin and the front of the turret)

On the advice of /cgg/ I've put some effort into incorporating dashing into the core combat mechanics a little bit more, rather than having it mostly stand as a mobility tool.

By which I mean I TOTALLY stole Rush Attacks from T:D.

In the realm of demo progress, currently designing "burst pipes" assets to go with a global Tier 6 thing that happens (the entire level starts to shake and explode, making shit fall apart and go haywire... which leads into the lava rise at Tier 7)

You need to study drawing. Artistic skill comes in handy when doing sprite art. Here's an example: the colors, shapes, and contrast come together to give a more sinister, demonic appearance without using blood, upside down stars, or whatever.

You can immediately tell it's sorta like a goat, possibly a demon, and I'm maybe using like 9 colors.

There is no limit to your dash (though you have to be at armor power 1 to use it, so I guess you can't use it RIGHT away, but you should be able to do it for most of the match)

And the rush attack is fairly limited in its efficacy because of the knockback; it's a decent way to enter a fight from a dash but you can't really use it for combo creation because of the way the knockback works.

Sure, Dream Dungeon was actually really decent. I listed most of the annoyances; Moving and casting really just stops your movement all together in a game where it looks like I need to be moving and dodging constantly. If I cant move and cast, I need some kind of dodge move or dash or something. This creates the next annoyance which was the fact that I was trapped sometimes and forced to take damage even right at the spawn. Also, I'm a fan of falling off the game worlds and instantly dying, creates a "Don't go too close to the edge!" feel. The character also might be moving a tad too slow in what seems to be a fast paced game.

They're actually pretty easy. The only things you need to get right are the contact and pass. After that, you can fill in the rest with whatever is missing. Even a crappy animator can make a convincing run if they include the basic elements of a walk/run cycle. Most newbies struggle because they don't break it down, instead they try to copy so they end up not understanding the parts of a walk cycle.

Most of my "INNOVATIONS" aren't implemented properly yet. I think Sewers level 2 is where the game starts to get interesting with enemies and combat, but it's kind of a long slog to get to that point if you don't find the rest as interesting. If you'd rather make it look more masculine, I'd try changing out the joints, moving away from ball joints, particularly in the legs. They tend to make hips and thighs look delicious.
Also maybe choose a different color scheme, or add some form of limb decor that makes it look less smooth. Spikes or dents or something.

Or, I guess, you could leave it as is if you're going for a less relatable robot. Yours is just androgynous enough that you could pass it as a pure machine. I never played MMOs because I was spoiled rotten on MUDs. Then when MMOs came, they feel horribly limited to me but I can't go back to text either.

So I miss, like, being in a room with a bunch of people, examining a couch, entering the couch, and it's a whole area. Or a library I found in some forest once, that had books written by other players over the years. Also how easy it was to design new areas and rooms that even had interesting functionality.

So basically deep and interesting functionality and mechanics, the kind of which you can only really get from words and combining words, unfortunately.

Don't make an MMO. MMOs are shit. Their gameplay is inherently boring. People play them to participate in the community, whether that means raiding with their bros or lording their status and rare items over everyone else.

Community based play

I used to play a game called Flyff that had a super good party system. Parties had to be created manually and there could be a max of 8 people. Max XP was given if you were in a full party but only LVLing with another single person around you. Parties could level up to super high LVLs that gave bonuses to the party leader. So what would happen was that there would be several super high level guild parties that would never die, because once someone was done grinding for the day they'd pass the party to someone else who would manage it (keep it filled up and preventing it from dying) until they found someone else who wanted to level. On top of this, this system totally encouraged couples grinding together for maximum XP. It's a simple system that had tons of good community related effects. I wanna see more of that.

I have several ideas on how to bring more of that to MMOs but I guess you don't wanna hear ideas...

People dont really miss anything from MMOs. Current MMOs are almost carbon copies of old mmos with a few stuff added. people just "miss" being brand new to the genre. Because every game is exactly the same as every other is why MMOs are dead.

To revive the genre (in my opinion) there needs to be an mmo that isn't like any before it.
I think this means no levels, no forced grinding, no forced fetch quests, and a spin on dungeons (tho im not sure what that entails). I also think the game should be fun played alone.

It also runs like butt in my 2d pixelshitter indiedev pc, again the power of Unreal
I played with a gamepad, and the controles were tight. Camera was a bit shit when entering/exiting rooms, but I understand that's a major headache for 3d action games. I'd have liked a bit of camera turn whenever the player is also turning while running.

I got stuck in the wall by standing against the complex secret door and pressing use.
Adding to that: going into a room, with the shitty camera, and being greeted with a pitfall is a no no

I enjoyed most of my time, the puzzles were clever, but the timing and jumps are impossible due to low FPS.
Looking forward for your next demo, hopefully after I've bought a new GPU.

Well I have experience with unity, gamemaker and corona, but I never touched rpgmaker until today. It's quite simple actually. I went to the depths of the scripts to change it so you have to throw money equivalent to the sum of all the exp of the enemies that you fight, but it wasn't that tough.

We are well organized. Two live in europe, one of them managing enemies, items, animationsand troops, one just makes levels and I manage everything, and even do sprites and animations too, I usually do it at night, when I can work on it and they're asleep.

Also, for rpgmaker, 6 files are always changed when saving despite not even using them. Which is why we only have a single person working on the project. To add more maps we have a copy in another folder and just copy paste the file when it's done.

Honestly you want to memorize your shortcuts. Blender is really minimal in the UI and there are a stupid amount of hidden buttons that you need to use regularly.

It actually might be a good thing for them to have a different lay out. It will force you to understand what they are doing and not copying their every action. You will learn how to do it on your own and understand what the buttons do to.

Unless they don't say what they're doing the first time, then you should just stop watching that tutorial if you don't understand.
