Why does the f-22 cockpit glass sometimes look orange?
>>

Because it's not glass and it's covered in some radar reflective thing to prevent the radar from coming into the canopy and bouncing off all the stuff inside it.

Why? I enjoy it a lot. They are a lot more of a challenge than the AI.

The only thing that sucks is finding servers that properly support PvP. Most of the populated ones are training servers that have a big protection zone for one side where you can't PvP unless they fly out of it. Also, the lack of teamwork unless you're playing with friends.

In the whole year that I've been playing DCS online in a public server it's happened to me only twice and both times it was that shitter Sweeper.

The other anons were talking about some kind of organized competitive PVP thing that I've never done, so I guess it's different there.

>>121835045
I can't really tell of it's got good gameplay or not. First there was the UI problem, that took a lot of getting used to, it's seriously terrible.

Then there's the problem with ordering your units. I guess you're supposed to five them vague orders and they try to do what you command them to do to the best of their ability, or something. This usually just results in my vehicles turning on the spot for literal in game hours instead of moving or attacking. And when they do move it's slow as hell. I want to like the game because it seems pretty unique but it's really taxing to play

The fact that it's obviously a ripoff and they very likely didn't fully get why it's designed in a certain way, therefore, cargo cult. Like how slavs do retarded shit such as fastening bed nets and bricks (as in, actual fucking clay bricks) to trucks, things like that.

Oh no, they do it because they don't know shit about how ERA works, but since both soviet tanks and some western shit have bricks attached to them they must've thought that attaching anything that resembles bricks to their vehicles must be a good idea.

The bednets idea wouldn't even be that stupid if it wasn't for the fact that the gaps are much bigger than RPGs and HEAT shells (or how the gap between the shit they fasten them to isn't big enough for completely damping a HEAT shell), but you get the idea. A case of cargo cult done right is that T-64 or something that was posted a few threads ago that used spent shells casings as improvised spaced armor.

"the belief that various ritualistic acts will lead to a bestowing of material wealth"
>>
>>121858335
Cargo cult programming is a style of computer programming characterized by the ritual inclusion of code or program structures that serve no real purpose. Cargo cult programming is typically symptomatic of a programmer not understanding either a bug they were attempting to solve or the apparent solution (compare shotgun debugging, deep magic).[1] The term cargo cult programmer may apply when an unskilled or novice computer programmer (or one inexperienced with the problem at hand) copies some program code from one place to another with little or no understanding of how it works or whether it is required in its new position.

Cargo cult programming can also refer to the results of applying a design pattern or coding style blindly without understanding the reasons behind that design principle. Examples are adding unnecessary comments to self-explanatory code, adding deletion code for objects that garbage collection would have collected automatically, and creating factories to build simple objects.
>>
>>121858502
A cargo cult is a Melanesian millenarian movement encompassing a diverse range of practices and occurring in the wake of contact with the commercial networks of colonizing societies. The name derives from the belief that various ritualistic acts will lead to a bestowing of material wealth ("cargo").

A cargo cult is a religious movement usually emerging in tribal or isolated societies after they have had an encounter with an external and technologically advanced society. Usually cargo cults focus on magical thinking and a variety of intricate rituals designed to obtain the material wealth of the advanced culture they encountered.

I was referring to Ukrainian militias, be them pro Ukraine or pro Russia.
>>
>>121860350
Not saying your wrong, but dont you think it more likely the Ukraine are copying Russian designs rather than westerns ones with the clay bricks instead of ERA? ERA tends to be more common and visually striking on russian/soviet tanks than western ones, and Ukrainians are more likely to be familiar with soviet tanks than western ones.
>>
I remember reading somewhere that the Soviets made extremely detailed maps of American industrial cities. Not just big cities like Detroit, but small ones like Scranton, PA, which is a coal-mining city. Apparently they were interested in how American cities are organized and what ideas could be used in the Soviet Union to improve the prosperity of its own cities

Just a neat little bit of info I guess.

I'm trying to find the name of the guy right now, but IIRC the architect who designed GM's factories in Detroit was hired by the USSR to help with their industrialization as well

As much as some people here would love to deny it, the Soviets had a great deal of respect for American economic prosperity. China is that way about technology, apparently they are crazy about NASA over there

outclimb him, lower alt the sabre has advantage, higher alt mig has advantage, sabre can out run and outdive the mig, I usually spiral climb until he stalls out then I dive in for the kill

They put a brick there instead.

Also the charge will detonate before hitting the armor so it will a create space for the copper to expand before hitting the armor.

The 3/9 line is good but at close ranges the missile will just follow you. The best way to defeat missiles is to run them out of energy, so regular heading changes are the way to go. Consider putting it on your 9, then doing a quick 180 and putting it on your 3. Since missiles are lead pursuit they will run out of airspeed trying to follow you through a maneuver like that.

More map testing!

The firing ranges have now introduced moving targets that shoot back.
>>
>>121918960

Seems strange that they list it as only 2 AIM-9s.

From the bomb/rocket loadouts it looks like the F-5 has 4 wing hardpoints + underbelly hardpoint.

I'm thinking hopefully that the 2 AIM-9s are on the wingtips and you can carry 4 more on the wing hardpoints.

I mean look at the Mig-21, you can have 6 R-60s on it, and potentially 8, unless Leatherneck removes that option.
>>
>>121877425
I guess AI are extremely stupid and constantly crash with proper flight models. That was the case in WT (yeah, I know. It was my gateway to proper sims though so sue me) so they need crutches like that.
>>
>>121941639
The game won't let you mount 4 of the double rails, only 2. The loadout screen won't block it, but the plane won't spawn with it. 6 is the max amount of missiles you can possibly carry on the MiG-21.

The F-5E was originally only designed to carry 2 AIM-9s. It's that simple. Just because you physically mount something on a hardpoint doesn't mean it has the necessary wiring to work right.

F-16s for example have 8 hardpoints under their wings, but only 6 of them are capable of loading air to air missiles.

Later F-5s modified by the countries that use them could do things like mount more air to air missiles or different weapons. Some of the more recent modernizations can even do crazy things like fire AMRAAMs, but it looks like BST is going with the original USAF version of the F-5E. Except with an RWR.

I misremembered the deal with the radar, it was about another aircraft. IIRC the press utterly shat on the Tigershark labeling it as "the thirld world's ideal fighter" or some stupid shit like that, and resulted in basically nobody having any interest on it. Which reeks of bribes.

Random question

Does anyone know the proper way to loadout an F-15 when carrying all A-A missiles that has 6 AIM-120s and 2 AIM-9s? Are the AIM-9s supposed to go on the inner or outer portion of the triple mount wing pylons?

And no, I'm not looking for your personal preference or what you like but rather what the military actually does.

>>

You actually aren't

If you set curves with the "magnet mod" you still get decreased gimbal range

the curves only apply within the decreased range

so instead of your stick being
0 25 50 75 100 100 100 100 100
as you move it to the right

It'd now be something like
0 10 30 60 100 100 100 100 100

You literally lose half (or more depending on the magnet strength) of your possible stick movements

>>
>>122007705
They are incredibly niche units because of the M72 LAW and overall subpar transports. Canadian Airborne 75 and Marines 90 are both only slightly worse in infantry combat and have RPGs that can properly fight REDFOR fire support and IFV spam. For pure anti infantry duty, Assault Engineers can massacre special forces squads even better than deltas for 10pts less.

If they came in Blackhawks they would be decent for air openings, because currently NORAD can easily win air openings but can't drop in any useful infantry to capitalize on that since everything but Riflemen comes in shitty chinooks and hueys.

>>121942487

The F-5 was used by frontline allies like South Korea due to the US policy of not having top of the line equipment on dangerous borders, ie a ROKAF jet is more likely to crash in North Korea than a USAF jet.
Northrop got involved with a USAF project to make decent but not as advanced fighters under the program. Then Reagan took office and decided to reverse Carter's front line policy and all of a sudden countries like Pakistan, South Korea, and Israel are buying up F-16's like crazy and Northrop is left with a decent aircraft that it can't sell due to the competition.

The last hope of the Tigershark was selling to Air National Guard as the F-20 had BVR capability which the F-16 lacked until the late 80's but the Air Force shot that down, partly using the escalating cost of Northrop's B-2 program to justify not buying even more from them.

What do when plebbiter thinks ASF should only stay at 3k to avoid MANPADS

Seriously, he thinks Look-down shoot-down interception works for every plane, that dropping bombs on moving targets from 3k is viable and that MANPADS shouldn't be able to hit any fighter at all.
>>
>>122025204
Not really the best solution but it does raise a good point about the effectiveness of AA systems in game. ASFs aren't nearly as important as they should be in wargame, and an equal point investment in AA systems will always be superior to spending the same amount on ASFs. To truly gain air superiority, you need at least 2 sets of 2 fighters to maintain constant overwatch which is a huge point investment and still doesn't guarantee that you can stop a suicide bombing or ATGM run.

The fix to this problem isn't to make ASFs fly higher, but it would be nice if I could chase after a bomber without getting smashed by MANPADs or if fighters were cheap and plentiful enough for that to not be an issue.

Your infantry transports are a mess. Jagers are strong because of their spammability, to keep that cost efficiency they need to be taken in M113. Marder 2 is a requirement for any Eurokek deck, and Dorniers are just crap. Take the FSJ in the CH-53 if you want to use them in air openings or Fuchs if you just take them for general purpose.

BGS are pretty trash compared to the French shock recons or Fernspahr. Sure they cost almost nothing, but they can't be used for sneeki breeki because they are slow as shit and don't have useful AT.

Euro bombers are all around terrible, IMO. Don't even bother with them, the Mirage is easily dodgeable and the IDS has a dogshit payload for 140pts. Alpha jets are pretty bad too, but at least they are spammable. Use the Euro plane tab to spam Mirages and Rafales to get air superiority and use MARS and Panzermortar spam as your replacement for lack of good bombers.

>>122046937
He's full of shit. The t-90 is not that good though and gru can always ride along regular spets. All in all it's not an amazing trade since 5 AP means 2-3 soviet units (which are usually pretty good outside of tanks) or a luxury soviet plane.
>>
>>122047554
>T-90 is not that good
Name a better tank that isn't the M1A2
>GRU
I use both. GRU for sneeki breeki since they have 4 per card and recon optics and yucks for general combat.

With 55 AP you can already take just about every essential unit the USSR provides. In team games just the extra T-90 card is worth the trade, it's the difference between matching and crushing NATO coalitions in heavy armor. In 1vs1 that's not much of a benefit but the other units I listed come into play a lot more at that scale.

Chally2s take 5 HP per hit from 30AP missiles. The extra armor means almost nothing since they also have less AP than the other top tier superheavies.
>That's pretty much their only purpose though.
Keep in mind an encounter between a KMS or Leclerc and a T-90 would fall under "raking a cheaper tank", the only way that fight can be won is through ATGM plane support.

Well yeah no shit, if you use 300pts of plane then it's expected that it should be able to kill a 180pt unit. LGBs are only really useful (as in cost efficient) against 3 top armor tanks or less, such as the T-80UM. For example, a T-80UM will die to one harrier GR.7 or nighthawk and to two F-1s or Sk-60Bs. While the tanks cost nearly the same, the firepower in LGBs required to get the kill is much lower.

The controls are actually trivial. It's basically "move here, fire on this target in your LOS". It tries to be really big in the scope of what it covers so it doesn't have any really deep systems. Read the manual, it's straightforward stuff.

I think the imposters could have been a hair bigger (something like 7.5 versus the original 5), and I still hate that your resolution affects the apparent size of the imposters.

Honestly, I would be fine with them just removing the large setting and then bringing back the fade with distance feature that they removed this patch for some reason.

That doesn't solve the resolution problem, but 8.0 at 1440p is a perfectly reasonable value.

What would the faction balance be like if Eugen actually embraced the cold war theme? Would it be doable?

Give Nato more plane focus, Pact more tank focus. Break things down a little more from there, if coalitions have to be a thing.

e.g.

Pact - tonks, better ADN, better arty
USSR - Highest end tonks; pretty shit infantry except spetz. (is of missing paycheck etc.). Fairly close playstyle to current, but with less meme-tier individual units and more consistently powerful artillery/ADN. Instead of a single burrito cooking a whole town/forest, you'd need a few of them – but you'd also be able to afford it.
RD - Cheap everything. MORE MEN MORE TANKS etc. Not proper human wave, but wearing opponents down, then breaking with handfuls of higher-end units.
EB - Dunno? Cheeki breeki sneaky stuff? Better infantry? Highly cost effective units - a sort of 'midrange' between USSR's lopsided strengths/weaknesses and RD waves?

Nato - planes, mediocre ADN, tanks are either mediocre or disgustingly expensive.

US (or NORAD if you really feel like including icebongs) - Remove meme units like Longbro/Patriot (or at least tone down massively), shift focus to planes with lots of mediocre ground units and then a handful of high-priced but top-tier ground units to push with/hold while air support isn't available.
CW – Dunno. Emphasize variety of infantry units from its member nations? Bongtanks are shit, their planes aren't anything to write home about, and along with Memedinavia, seems to get its own faction only to appeal to nationalists.
Honcorps – Sort of middle ground between other Nato coalitions and Pact gameplay? Better & more cost-effective tanks/inf. Remove Rafaele (concurrent development with F-22 lel). Remove spees muhreens.
Scandinavia – I'd roll them into Honcorps, honestly. But to avoid angry swedes forcing me to participate in their diversity huddles, eh. Nato EB equivalent insofar as stealth/moderately-strong-but-cost-effective units style?
>>
>>122131496
Just considering US vs USSR with minimal change to current game dynamics, I can see a lot of crashed planes.

My reasoning is that if the planes are what the US player needs to spend their time managing, they will have to go against an air defense the USSR player will be spending their time managing.

Provided planes won't have very good vision, I can easily imagine total air control for USSR.

Now if they mixed things up a bit more:

US gets access to recon planes - planes with cameras, TGP, etc.
+SR-71 (still undecided on this considering the photos have to be developed back at the airfield)
+A-10A with maverick as a ghetto FLIR (Tier 1 recon)
+A-10C with TGP (Tier 2 - 3 recon)
+E-3 AWACS (Tier 3 Air-only recon)

USSR gets access to recon radar stations.
+EWR
+76N6 (Clamshell)
+S-300

As well as some general quality of life improvements for aircraft.
+Ability to toggle aircraft altitiude
+See plotted aircraft flight path
+See weapon munitions ranges as a cone in front of the plane

+Ability to toggle helicopter flight speed (right click for normal move, fast move for full beans)
+GUI to see helicopter's altitude toggle setting
+Low-altitude helicopter flight at reduced speed

This dynamic could be pretty neat at this point.

>>
>>122135159
>Planes that kill Rad AA
>Flame tanks with super-fantasy range to kill town-inf
>Helicopters (some with sead, more with what I'd proposed - several NATO sead helis are overlooked because the US being good at things is an abomination unto the frog)
>Some APCs can kill tanks with side-shots/ATGMS
>Infantry strength varies wildly based on range, load-out, and who gets the drop on who

Is definitely of rock and paper
>>
>>122131496
It would be a slavaboo wankfest at that point.
>Highest end tonks
Not really true in the game's current timeframe, at best the advantage is marginal, especially during a meeting engagement. USA and Germany had thousands of 2A4s and M1A1HAs in 1991 which aren't pushovers.
>tanks are either mediocre or disgustingly expensive.
Real life cost doesn't matter since NATO was willing and able to spend more on their hardware. If the Soviets had more money to get jewed out of you'd see the same shit.
>Remove meme units like Longbro/Patriot (or at least tone down massively
Meme units are how the US stays competitive when vast swaths of the rest of their arsenal are ass. They can't properly fight REDFOR without being strong on the ground, because...
>shift focus to planes
...Planes don't win games, especially against a strong air defense. Air superiority costs a hell of a lot more than just building a proper ADN and bomber/CAS spam will be whittled down to nothing if relied on too much. The US already has the second largest airforce in game (behind the USSR, lel) and it's not reliable at all to turn the tide of the game.

NATO is also unable to rely on ATGMs like they should because across the board they are so terrible. European ATGMs are gimped for some random reason and TOWs, while good, don't have enough of a range advantage to seriously threaten tanks unless you are using a stealth platform like the M2A3.

Air power would work a lot better if

- You get more cards of SEAD and ASF. Enough to have SEAD accompany bombers regularly and a regular CAP.

- more TOT for ASFs. F-16 Block 52 can only stay for like 30 seconds after it flies in.

- SEAD doesn't have dogshit reload times. It takes 3 times as much time to bolt 2 HARMS on a EF-111 than it takes to put 30 bombs on a SU-24M

- Radar AA needs time to power up after shutting down to dodge SEAD. Say a 10 second dead time after you power it down.

>>122144372
>- SEAD doesn't have dogshit reload times. It takes 3 times as much time to bolt 2 HARMS on a EF-111 than it takes to put 30 bombs on a SU-24M
Fuck this pisses me off, it's even worse on dualfire SEAD like the ECR and Feibao
>buy high end SEAD
>1 per card
>costs more than what it counters
>it has literally one single use
>that use can be entirely negated by not shit micro
>even with skilled plane micro it's all RNG
>shit like the patriot STILL outranges you
>reload takes 5 min assuming you don't take any hits

Radar shutoff time would be great, I'd even settle for something like 3 seconds to stop the bullshit where you can just wait for the enemy SEAD to circle around then unload on his ass.
>>
>>122149139
I think a good way to balance radar AA is to make it so it can still shut off right away but make the unit consume fuel while the radar is on (and not just a negligible amount of fuel consumption), I'm not entirely sure but I assume mobile long range radar vehicles require a lot of energy which would be supplied by a motor or generator. If the unit doesn't have fuel anymore, it can't keep its radar on.
Also introduce a power up time like the other anon said, at least for the long range radar units.

Question for you guys:

Do you know if anyone has mocked up the north vietnamese air defense network in CMANO? Specifically circa December 1972?

I'd like to try my hand at running Linebacker, and don't mind creating the US half of the scenario I just don't want to give myself an unfair advantage by having knowledge the planners didn't by setting up the defense myself.

Also it seems like a lot of work to make a scenario like that from the ground up, and I'm not sure where to start looking for such detailed sources regarding placement and capability.

Also while we're on the subject, has anyone recreated the soviet air defense network circa 1950s? I'd like to try my hand at playing SAC.

Either way, thanks.

Don't listen. You have a Patriot, you have a FOB and HEMTTs it's totally fine to skip an ASF. Napalm can be gud despite often being overshadowed by other options.

>opponent hiding command tank in zone
>can't kill with arty or bombers
>saturate with napalm
>force it in the open

It has its uses.
>>
>>122199783

If your opponent lets you get a 30%ECM 900 kph whale close enough to napalm his tank CV he already lost.
>>
>>122199783
Napalm is only good against infantry (but not as good as iron bombs..) or as a very fast and very expensive smoke source.
>>
>>122200583
It's not that simple.

If you fly a SEAD plane in first and he is forced to turn off his radar AA and you have napalm planes going in at the same time, really, what is even the best player gonna do? Turn on the AA so he might lose them to the SEAD but might kill a plane? Or keep them off and get napalmed but let his AA be safe? And if that napalm can force a T80UK out of a forest and maybe in a spot where you can kill it, even sacrificing the napalm plane would be worth it. It's all part of the battle. It's not as simple as "HURR DURR IF THIS HAPPENS HE ALREADY LOST."

They're $20-40 more though which is a 100% price increase and they aren't "way" better. They are better but not by that much.

They don't fall under the category of budget stick, they're mid range sticks.

The Mig-21 is actually done well and has a flight model. It is a great module with great support.
The Mirage is only a potentially great module. Maybe.
>>
>>122266423
The mirage is also a bit cheaper. It's a bit of a conflict, I tend to prefer NATO aircraft(I generally prefer the aesthetic and electronics, though Su-27's can be a ton of fun too.).

I generally have a no-prepurchase policy, but I've never gotten a DCS module I haven't liked. So I guess it comes down to the performance of the planes. The Mirage is making a lot of promises of being the first solid NATO multirole. How does the MiG perform in this respect? There's already the 29, though it's not as high fidelity. If I must chose between two delta-wings, I'd have to say it comes down to which is the better choice for general multi-role flying.
>>
>>122266530
>The Mirage is making a lot of promises of being the first solid NATO multirole. How does the MiG perform in this respect?
Welp.
The 21 is an interceptor. It's old, doesn't really have any balanced opponent until Belsimtek comes out with the F-5 and while it can perform ground attack role, it's not stellar in it.
Yeah, the Mirage sounds like what you want.
Razbam simply haven't proven themselves yet, hence my reluctance in recommending it (I was hyped as fuck though when they announced the M-2000C)
>>
>>122266671
Thanks, anon. I hadn't considered that Mirage is made a studio new to DCS. I guess I'll do a bit more research and sleep on it and see how I feel. I might just wait until around thanksgiving to see if the 21 goes on sale. I'm more of a multiplayer guy, but the 21 seems to have a superior amount of singleplayer content, though that may just be how vague the Mirage details are.
>>
>russia has a lower gdp than italy

>>122267087
