I think the series needs to be rebooted but in a very deliberate way. They need to not test the waters or make a spin off. They need to find something they like and fucking stick with it.

And that's something that they and many other devs need to get through their heads. It's not about what WE want. If they made a good game that THEY liked, it'll sell well. Good games sell well, not good focus group tested content. Unless it's something like call of duty or ass creed or fallout or Zelda. But Sonic is not that, and will most likely never BE that.

To be honest, while I agree with you, no one seems to care. And before you get angry, let me explain.

Lost World was filled with that stuff in a game sense, and no one cared.

I like Ian Flynn and the comics, and what he does is great. It's basically the story version of what you're saying. But people don't care.

And that's not saying that they shouldn't do that stuff. They really should. But under the current Iizuka/SEGA regime, where everything is obviously focus tested for maximum kid appeal, I just don't see that happening.

You're right, and I hate that you're right. I disagree with you saying that Lost World was that in a game sense, since all it really did was embrace the Genesis games (Again). Now that is embracing the franchise's history, but only a small part of it, and in a kind of lazy way. Ring being the health bar only worked well in the past because they vanish more faster. The modern one make the game too easy, no one dies to enemies besides pit falls, you cannot even get crushed by traps. If ring are to be used as life bars, stronger enemies would be one way. On Sonic Heroes they had that enemie who could capture you regardless of how many ring you had, he was not strong but would make you at least take notice of him.

I just watched the Sonic OVA again.
Reminded me of what I want the series to be story wise.

I think the inherent reason that Sonic won't go back to that is both because of the flak other games got for it and that "It's a blue hedgehog fighting a fat scientist, there shouldn't be a story" bullshit when other platformers with far more ridiculous concepts manage to tell good stories (Ratchet and Clank, Sly Cooper, Jak and Daxter, I could go on)

Amy is by virtue of her bonus to animals grabbed, which is helpful in some of the daily missions.

Silver/Big/Cream are worth it if the game's too fast for you, but the hit to your score means you'll have a harder time getting higher ranked/better weekly prizes.

If the Chaotix come around, their ring bonuses will make getting rings easier, which makes leveling up characters easier.

Personally, I'm leveling up Halloween Shadow for the end level bonus.

I feel that, if Dark and Rose were going to be Easy and Hard, then it should have been developed more than just "longer level" and "shorter level".

If some routes were inaccessible to Team Rose, but were open to Team Sonic and Dark, that would make it a bit better for a start. Maybe push more of the combat aspect onto Team Dark, while finishing a level quickly is more for Team Sonic.

To be fair, Heroes is a pretty massive game. Those levels are seriously some of the longest for sonic. Making team rose for younger players and team sonic/dark for more experienced players was a good solution, otherwise they'd need a lot more time to make individual levels for each team

Sonic has always been trying to appeal to the preteen and young teenager demographic, to some degree, since Sonic's rebellious and "hip" attitude tends to line up with the attitude's of boys of that age. The problem isn't that they aren't targeting an older audience but that they're targeting the kids and have started to lose focus on how their marketing worked in the first place.
Black Knight and Unleashed were the last two Sonic games that truly embodied what I felt was the Sonic of my youth.
People don't ask for Mario to be more grown up because he's always targeted kids/everyone and continues to target kids/everyone.

Not necessarily. You could probably just set it up to place "walls" or some manner of blockade to cut off certain routes in the map instead of loading entirely new ones.

In my mind, I saw Rose as being the easy platformer routes, Sonic has access to all routes, Dark can take harder platforming routes or take the most direct route but also the most enemy filled. Chaotix get a weird mix of routes to make the map a bit of a mix-up of enemies and platforming.

Kids always usually think their older brother is cool.
In the same way, if you target young teenagers, you also partially target kids that are close to that age that are trying to be cool like their influence.
Even back in the Genesis days, the console as a whole was marketed as "cooler and more radical than Nintendo" and Sonic was a part of that. It stayed like that until fairly recently with a couple of outliers on the way.
