I'm not sure that was his plan, he says in the very beginning of the game that Sorey and Mikleo had been raised to protect Elysia like all the other seraphim in the village. I think if Sorey had never shown any desire to leave Elysia, he could have stayed though Heldalf probably would have come knocking eventually so they would have been fucked. But Mikleo also said that Jiji suspected all along that Sorey would leave one day to the human world and had prepared him for that accordingly.

Even if the Alisha thing hadn't happened, Sorey and Mikleo's love for ruins and the Celestial Record probably would have triggered their wanderlust sooner rather than later. That Ladylake was so closeby, and Lailah just happened to be hanging out in a building they were very likely to visit... well, it wasn't totally a coincidence, but it still would have been up to Sorey to talk to Lailah and choose to become the shepherd.

This is pretty much exactly how I felt after finishing the game, you have a lot of great ideas such as human/seraph interactions, the general publics view of the Shepherd, and everything not being black and white among many others. They end up touching on each point but then don't expand on the ideas as much as you would like throughout the game while some get dropped entirely. I've seen some people say this is bad writing but I'd have to disagree, it felt like they wrote it all out but then never got around to adding the actual content into the game.

What we are left with is bits and pieces of interesting storylines, Maltran has this huge connection to Alisha but then Alisha disappears from the story, you start out getting sucked into politics but then suddenly the idea is dropped and you don't experience any of that in Pendrago, and then you have moments like the bridge scene or the war where you see how normal citizens react to the Shepherds power. The Trial portion of the game is what really stood out to me due to how little interaction it had with the world during it. You have this neat little bit dealing with Slenge before the fire trial but then it's just a quick jog to the other 3 with nothing really going on. Where is Heldalf during all this? Where are his subordinates? Why did Symonne only pop in near the end of the game? I mean hell, I was totally fine with how they went about detailing malevolence but then Rose ends up not making any sense at all in relation to the subject, like they had a lot more to go into with her but said nah forget it shes just perfect.

I have to stop myself from going on and on about it because there are so many aspects to the game that felt like this, I enjoyed it overall but it could have been an amazing game if they actually put in the rest of the content.

You know what really bothered me? Town design.

The other games had such nice towns and cities that were laid out with care and made to look at least somewhat functional. What do we get in Zestiria? Just a few copy pasted square house models plopped onto generic terrain. The cities as a whole weren't too bad but could have used a lot more detail or really just content taking place within them.

Too much empty space in this game. NPCs in Abyss usually had quests attached to them and there was a shop every few steps or an important story area or it was an area to give you an idea of just how large scale something is (that bridge in Luke's home city and Grand Chokmah). Ladylake is pretty and all, but there's no point in making the city so huge if 30% of it is dead ends with no chest or anything of importance. Fenmont in Xillia is also pretty big but you can find feathers and items everywhere. Maybe they'll become important later on, but that's my judgement thus far.

Also is it me or do enemies on field maps run faster than you and in dungeons they're much slower?

So I'm continuing playing Xillia and the only thing bothering me so far is that I can't do almost any arte chain links.
Is there any kind of info inside the game about what shit comboes into what? Maybe some basic rules that apply? Like, combining elements.
Or am I supposed to just figure it out/read somewhere else?
The only character combo that I can get over 2-3 arts with is Milla/Jude. Jude and Leia have some, but still less.

Quick question: I started playing Zestiria as my first Tales game. I think the combat looks fun and somewhat deep, as does the character/squad/item/ability management. The writing makes me want to punch myself in the face until my hand breaks.

Wrong. They USUALLY are upgrades. Newer armor has better defense. Newer weapons have more attack and/or arte attack.

The only outlier is the gear with nonstandard stats, like armor that gives no defense but tons of offense, or weapons that give massive defense but no offense.

All the stuff involving Alisha, which seemed like it was actually interesting and fleshed out, were cut, almost completely, and the stuff involving Rose didn't even really matter.

I mean really, what did Rose even do? Even the Sparrowfeathers stuff fell off the fucking map not long after she joins.

There is a very clear nosedive in story quality and consistency once Alisha leaves. If they were going to jam Rose in, they should have spent another 6-12 months actually rewriting the game to make it work with her. But obviously they had half or more of the game done already with Alisha, and it was too late.

Dezel was a fine addition to this game. His story was very well thought out and is one of the few instances in this game where an arc actually pans out.

Dezel was far too good for this game. The issue is actually with how they transfer to Zaveid. It just happens. The biggest problem, it should have happened before thw wind trial, Zaveid never went through it.

It's painful to think about all the neat things we could have been getting into had they not trashed it like this. With Rose I really wanted to spend more time with the sparrowfeathers, as the game goes on they sorta drift off outside of that one bit with Lunarre, who himself is suffering from not enough screentime not counting the DLC that brings everything into question. You've got all the obvious stuff with Alisha of course, I would have enjoyed dealing with the struggle between Shepherd duties and constant political meddling.

In the end it's just a lot of what ifs, they started down some great paths and then skipped right on to the next one.

If the DLC was supposed to help bridge the gap between games that isn't going to happen. Zestiria has a lot of unanswered questions that totally could have been a lead into a sequel of some sorts but with how poorly received it was they might drop all of that. It's more about the idea they push at you early on about how the rest of the human race views the Shepherd and how this gets dropped as soon as Alisha leaves. In Hyland you have Bartlow and the gang who want to buy off the Shepherd and fail then they want to blackmail him into doing their bidding, there is a lot that could be going politically throughout the game and they forget about it after going through two interesting scenarios.

That's what annoys a lot of people about the game, they set up a lot of these side stories and elements yet never go through with them so the entire game ends up feeling line one straight line.

Political stuff is dropped, shepherd/civilian relations dropped, villain doesn't really bug you throughout the game, villain's lackeys leave you alone till the end, and even the helpful NPCs are just kinda there without much going on. Personally I thought Mayvin was going to be a character that you bumped into around every turn, oh well.

Low level devs have literally no input on a macro scale in terms of the final product. If management gives you an impossible timetable and understaffs your team, you have no recourse. You just get as much done as possible and then ship it out at the deadline set by management. If "integrity as a game developer" is a high priority, somehow higher than paying the bills, your only other option is to quit instead of taking part in creating a game you know will be mediocre. Then someone else takes your place and the game is still mediocre, because you never had enough time or staff to make a good game in the first place.

The fact of the matter is Tales does not sell enough to justify a larger budget, and without a larger budget in terms of staff and time we'll keep getting these rushed and unfinished games. Ironically, they will never increase their sales numbers with such a mediocre product, so if they keep doing what they're doing there's no upside.

What I'd like in the anime is making it the intended full story and have Alisha as main girl. Symphonia outright changed moments and order of events, I heard Destiny was unrelated to the game, and Vesperia's OVA was pre-game. The only accurate anime adaption was Abyss for it's straight forward story.

Anyone who watched that anime special was expecting Alisha to be big. I like her so much because she isn't a romantic interest for once. I love her chemistry with Sorey. Rose feels like looking at a typed essay and it switches to actual handwriting.

They're gonna have to be very careful with this for the next titles.
Having dlc for characters who are barely in your party really shouldn't be a thing, and being able to use the costumes with other characters makes it only slightly more acceptable.
As much as I'd like them to stop selling costumes as DLC, they'll probably keep doing it, so they should at least do it correctly.

I'm very glad I got Alisha's Soulstoke Celebration Bamco, but since I only learned how to use MAs after she left, I can't say it was put to good use. It was free, sure, but still.

Free costumes are a thing of the past. People don't seem to realize that art assets increase in complexity as technology improves. The amount of time it took to make all of the costumes in something like Abyss is significantly less than what it would take to make make even a fraction of that number in Zestiria.

Not that it justifies the practice, but from a financial point of view there's no point for them to give out free costumes anymore. Lack of traditional costumes isn't hurting sales at all, and if people are willing to pay for them then Bamco is happy to take your money. I'm of the opinion that only cross licensed costumes should be paid dlc, but clearly enough people are buying formerly free outifts like swimsuit/maid/cameo costumes that Bamco will keep doing what they're doing.

It will only age better because over time people go into a game with more realistic (low) expectations. If you go into the game knowing that one of the cast leaves early on, the plot is kind of meh, most sidequests go nowhere and side characters get no development, combat is a step back and camera is awful, then you'll be able to appreciate what the game does well.

I you're in melee range, sidestep behind her as soon as you see her using her petrifying gaze.
The fight against the two sisters at once was a pain in the ass though. I had to take down the first one as quickly as I could with almost everything I had. If they both get low and start spamming petrifying moves you'll be in a lot of trouble.

I just tried the double fight and whatever one I wasn't actively engaging was spamming gorgon gaze from off screen right from the start. I don't think its going to be doable without the petrify resistance or dropping the difficulty. Which is dumb because they are a joke if you don't get petrified.

If your AI wasn't petrified within 10 seconds you are the luckiest man alive. I managed to last like 2 minutes but rose and Zaveid were petrified inside of 10 seconds.

I was playing on moderate, maybe they spam those moves more often in harder difficulties.
If you can't find a way to keep them both on screen (can't blame you with this camera), then yes, getting the petrify resistance is your best option.

This method worked great in fields and open areas in general, but to me it made fighting against walls even worse. And that damn tree in the Sergei 1v1 holy shit.
It helped a lot in the Rose/Zaveid fight though, I was able to keep both of them on screen.

Well, with KH anyway, there's a game every year. People will go on about side games but the series just doesn't go 1-2-3. Glad for the .5 releases, but boy is it painful, for my wallet, being a KH fan.

As for Tales, I would rather wait a year or 2 with no games in between if it meant the next would not have re-used assets or Sakuraba's cut and paste music.
