Cat. The only skills that are outright trash are shit like the bomb ones (on higher difficulty or NG+ only), some of the miscellaneous ones, and the crossbow ones. So while they may not be optimal, you'll get use out of anything you invest in. Might as well just pick something fun. I recommend branching a bit into alchemy myself.

Just started TW3, what's the recommended way to pace story/side quests? Should I just start at the lowest level stuff available to me and work my way up? Or prioritize side stuff before advancing the story, or vice versa, or what?

Mostly just want to avoid being too overleveled for stuff and see as much content as possible at a point where it will still provide me with a reasonable challenge.

In White Orchard, do all the side stuff first. When you go tothe first "real" game area, do at least one branch of the main quest there first. After that, take it at whatever pace you feel like because you should have the levels and equipment and know-how to figure things out on your own. It's an open world game, not a completionist sperg treadmill. You're meant to just faff about doing what you want until you want some major excitement, then you switch to the main quest.

Because she's on the frontlines serving the Redanians, in a Nilfgaard victory theres a fair chance she'll be killed during the war especially since she's headstrong and the kind of person to put herself in danger to help others. I love Witcher 3 so far. Been playing for 50+ hours. One thing I dont like is that I am way overleveled against everything, all quests, enemies etc. Just a few times do I meet something red. I think playing slow and taking your time, exploring and questing etc. is rewarded a bit too much in this game.

I choose Triss even though I have read the books. Before you ask, I have my reason for choosing Triss. Honestly, there is something about a woman willing to love a man unconditionally despite his flaws and his lust for another woman. Triss puts Geralt on a pedestal and Yen treats him like a walking scratcher commonly refer to as a .

Before someone say Yen died for Geralt, let me say it was just circumstances. Things could have been different. She is not a bad character, but she strings Geralt along like a pet and then reward him with sex so he stay obedient.

I know many book readers also say Yen is Geralt true love; I personally disagree but hey its just MHO. I am part of an elite group of book readers who feel differently about the Yens Geralt true love thing. My imagination screams when I read books, so I make my ending regardless of the novel outcome. Love and lust are two different things in my world. Lust is unfaithful and fickle hence the constant breakups with Yen and Geralt. Love is acceptance, attraction, and togetherness even when you are annoyed and Triss offers that to Geralt. In the books, its not to be, but in the game we are free to make it so.
