mods that aren't in the pastebin

Lost EU Maps
http://www.nexusmods.com/xcom/mods/575/?
>Allows playing the 4 EU maps which are not avaliable in EWI:
>URB_Museum, URB_Museum_Euro, URB_Demolition, URB_GasStation

Long War- Customize the Air Game
http://www.nexusmods.com/xcom/mods/608/?
>you can customize the stats for the Interceptor, the Firestorm, every single weapon, UFO, and foundry project related to the Air Game.
>You can also modify critical hits, specifically the minimum crit chance, the maximum crit chance, and the critical hit multiplier.

Relevant Information
http://www.nexusmods.com/xcom/mods/623/?
>Long War is often criticized for being opaque and having a significant proportion of important information regarding game mechanics and detailed stats located outside of the game itself (i.e. DGC.ini, the wiki, and the Nexus forums).
>However, the strategic UI is filled with flavour text that, while nice to read, is extremely vague and virtually useless to the player.
>This mod aims to repurpose the space in order to add information that is precise, assists player decisions, and reduces the need to ALT-TAB out of the game to check things.

Long War Mod Manager
http://www.nexusmods.com/xcom/mods/620/?
>This utility simplifies the installation and removal of Long War mods and can be used as a replacement for PatcherGUI. It also supports some new mod file extensions that allow for the automatic updating of configuration files.
>This can be used to automatically define keyboard commands, add second wave options, or anything else that involves adding lines to a config file.
>>
>>121672212

Long War Customize Unique Soldier Stats
http://www.nexusmods.com/xcom/mods/606/?
>You can alter the HP, Will, Aim, and Mobility of all the unique soldiers, and if they get a bonus perk (Van Doorn/Zhang), well, you can edit that too.
>This mod is compatible with eclipse666's Patrick - The Plumber - Carlock (for Long War) modification.

Additional Species
http://www.nexusmods.com/xcom/mods/619/?
>Show all UFO species in Hyperwave Relay info screen.

Virtual Reality Training (for Long War)
http://www.nexusmods.com/xcom/mods/569/?
>Healthy and non-fatigued soldiers earn XP every day while at the base. Extra XP can be earned by building the Officer Training School and purchasing officer upgrades. Make those rookies useful at last!

Campaign Summary
http://www.nexusmods.com/xcom/mods/626/?
>Campaign Summary adds a new menu option to the Situation Room allowing you to view a timeline of major strategic events over your entire campaign.
>It provides high level information about the events and displays an up-to-date world map showing the status of the world including panic levels, satellite coverage, withdrawn countries, and mission info.

Unhealable Red Fog
http://www.nexusmods.com/xcom/mods/629/?
>With this mod SW Red Fog penalties such as aim and mobility will last until the end of the mission and cannot be healed by medkits, sodlier will penalties remain healable.

All Perks Per Rank
http://www.nexusmods.com/xcom/mods/631/?
>Gives you all perks in a rank when you choose a perk. You will gain the bonus stats (will, aim, etc) of the chosen perk, but not the other perks. Works with 1, 2, or 3 perks per rank, and in every version of Long War I've tested it on.

Floater Autopsy Tweak
http://www.nexusmods.com/xcom/mods/632/?
>Changes the placement of the Floater Autopsy so it comes after Xenogenetics instead of after Alien Biocybernetics, while simultaneously making it a pre-req for Alien Biocybernetics
>>
>>121672324

Arc Thrower Range
http://www.nexusmods.com/xcom/mods/630/?
>Allows you to adjust Arc Thrower range through ini files.
>After installation, go the "Weapons=..." line for the Arc Thrower in DefaultGameCore.ini (by default, it's like 1947, or 1974 if you use the pistol-slot version). Change the iRange variable to something you like.

DR Chipping (for Long War)
http://www.nexusmods.com/xcom/mods/628/?
>DR Chipping is a minor mechanics tweak that allows DR to be reduced through repeated hits. It is fully compatible with Long War and integrates seamlessly into existing campaigns. It does not overhaul balance, perk, or item stats in any way, it simply adds a new mechanic to the tactical game.

UFO Interception Tweak
http://www.nexusmods.com/xcom/mods/634/?
>This is an attempt to lessen the impact of "bad luck" RNG during UFO interceptions by doubling the interception time and halving all damage. This prevents your interceptors from getting destroyed by one or two unlucky shots and also makes aborting at low HP a little less risky.
>The dodge, aim and tracking modules have their effects doubled as well. The chance to destroy a UFO has also been adjusted to take into account the halving of damage.

Enhanced Soldier Customization (for Long War)
http://www.nexusmods.com/xcom/mods/607/?
>This mod allows you to change your soldier's head size, body size and voice pitch from the soldier customisation screen. The range of available skin colours has also been greatly increased - you're no longer limited to skin tones.
>SHIV body size, weapon size and colour can be customised too!
>>
>>121672426

Bugfixes for bonus will and psi
http://www.nexusmods.com/xcom/mods/642/?
>Instances where psi panic would show 100% but still fail.
>Killing an alien who has mind controlled a soldier will not give that soldier the fallen comrade debuff and should fix the bug with 0 will hopefully.
>If an alien dies while being mind controlled, it will not apply the fallen comrade debuff the the rest of the squad and it will not count as a dead squad member for the xp bonus or prevent 'So others may live' from applying.
>Lots of instances where the bonus will from Neural damping, Combat drugs, Legio Patria Nostra, Esprit de corps and penalties from fallen comrade and battle fatigue didn't apply.
>Psi panic had a fixed duration of 2 turn irregardless of how many turns of panic it rolled. Fixed so duration is the same as nr of panic turns.
>If you target a unit that has neural dampning with psi panic it will show 0% chance to hit.
>Fixed so aliens get the same -35 penalty when using mind control as xcom.

What would you do if aliens took over earth?
>>
How about two inept retards playing versus?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jgfTV-KzBPY
>>
>>121702118
Depends on the context.

From the trailers I've seen, (and keep in mind I've avoided most spoilers to this point) it seems like the new xcom is embodying reddit's edgy desire to be the "persecuted rebel" in everything.

It feels like the aliens came to earth and pretty much fixed everything, but we want to blow it all up because
>TEH GABURMEND IS ALLWAYS EBIL
but who knows, maybe they'll make it believable.
>>
>>121702452
I think the justification is that xcom knows the aliens are up to something. An advent scientist defected to xcom, so it's possible they're doing something evil.
>>
>>121702452
The aliens are doing what they've done to every other race that failed their trials, mining us for genetic goodies and modifying us to use as cannon fodder.

They are just being more subtle about it than the Combine, that way humanity offers itself up with less resistance.

Don't be a faggot.
>>
>>121703128
This. It's like people didn't even play Enemy Unknown. The Ethereals are anything but benevolent overlords.
>>
>>121703128
This here is why I feel the way I do.

But why? What are they using the "canon fodder" for? One of my favorite ideas behind the original xcom was that the ethetals were doing what they were doing because they were scared of something even more powerful. Your argument that they're being "evil" is contrived and about as deep as a children's story.

The best type of villain is the type who is justified in their actions. One who can challenge the players idea of what is right and wrong.
>>
>>121702785

Any people who failed the trials were genetically uplifted and made into thralls to fight the next eligible participant.
http://xcom.wikia.com/wiki/Uber_Ethereal

This genetic uplifting is exactly what is happening in XCOM 2, with all the gene clinics, genetic manipulation, and the new ADVENT shocktrooper status.

Now stop being retarded.
>>
>>121703681

>Your argument that they're being "evil" is contrived and about as deep as a children's story.

Fuck off retard. I can just as much come along and say shit like the mid Soviet Union or Mongolian Khanate were 'justified villans' becasue they were aiming for a greater objective (uniting the world/socialist utopia/etc. etc.)

Doesn't change the fact they both murdered literally tens of millions of innocent people.

Equally, the Etherals might have some kind of higher objective, doesn't change the fact they're simply using humans as tools along with all their other slave races.

Ethereal are pretty evil, they have justifiable goals, that doesn't automatically mean what they're doing can't be called evil.

I guess every terrorist group in the world is 'edgy reddit shit' you fucking retarded faggot.

Blah blah blah.
I know the context of the old games, but this game doesn't hold all of the same canon.
>>
>>121705110
It literally does

Continuing on from the bad ending doesn't mean everything is rendered irrelevant, especially in such a deliberately vague plot
>>
My final thought on what could have been in the old xcom is that while brutalist the ethetals quest for "uplifting" a being could be called justified because they're trying to create a Immortal creature or truly understand the universe in a way that no emotional mortal could.

I think that's a pretty fitting ammout of depth for how silly this game usually is and is pretty interesting to think about.

Whether or not you think their methods are justified is unimportant, because the game makes you think.

My problem with the new one is it seems to be abandoning any actual maturity and just smashing things. Which is bad.

We'll see what happens
>>
>>121705110
Its the exact same canon, except in this timeline Xcom failed to beat the aliens so they took over. The splitting point between them is did Xcom win EU/EW or not.
>>

I barely moved out of my LZ and already activated my 5th pod (the first seeker pod is dead, the second got the screwiest activation I saw in a long time and is now somewhere far on my flank)

First I activated two mechtoid pods at once on two sides, so I had to fall back in full cover. Then a mechtoid decided to just one shot my officer through full cover, then a floater pack with their berserker pet decided to join the fun

What is it about this map? Every time I play it, all the pods patrol into me, especially on that spawn - I didn't even

I'm going to level with you m8; the franchise isn't about characters or story. It's about a player generated story, which is the campaign, your soldier's successes and failures (either theirs or your own), and shooting ayys. It's why they tried to be light with shen, vahlen, and bradford. They had more stuff written up for them, but cut it because it was out of place in this franchise.

A story focused tactical game works because those games have specific characters in your battles, with their own backgrounds, motivations, and whatnot. So you get to interact with them constantly, and get attached; their struggles are yours. However, in X-COM, your soldiers are blank slates to be filled by their experiences in the game itself, and other characters, like bradford, aren't as important to the player because he is essentially a voice for 80% of your playtime. Same goes for the other supporting characters. If you put too much effort into them, it will be wasted at best, since nobody will care; at worst, people will balk at it, that you're "shifting the focus" of the franchise.

There's nothing wrong with a story-centric video game, but there's nothing wrong with being light on the story and letting the player fill in the slate themselves. They're just two different approaches of generating a player experience and there's plenty of games to satisfy both of those needs.

You could play something like Front Mission, Tactics Ogre/FFT or Valkira Chronicles if you want that. Front Mission is the shit.

Not every game needs "lore"
For fuck's sake the entire gaming industry is flooded with games that are all about >muh story and >muh lore, and all of them are disgusting and only entertaining to plebs who have never watched a movie or picked up a book.

XCOM is just about shooting some fucking aliens and nothing else.
I don't need to know their deep motivations.
I don't need some grey morality lecture.
I don't need some cliché villain speech
I just want to shoot E.T.

I swear, lorefags are the fucking worst. Just take a look at Dark Souls for proof of that.
>>
>>121737121

>>121737121
>XCOM is just about shooting some fucking aliens and nothing else.
it hasn't been that since the original, the original has plenty of lore that only got expounded on with TFTD and Apoc

>I swear, lorefags are the fucking worst. Just take a look at Dark Souls for proof of that.

All right so here's a rough estimate.

The f-35c is one of the most advanced fighters in the world, and costs 115 million apiece. Understanding that the xcom fighter, which costs 200 spessbucks, is far more advanced, I will assume the xcom fighter costs several million more, at about 150 mil apiece. This is obviously messy mass but that the fuck else am I supposed to do?

So understanding that 200 spessbucks is 150 mil, 100 spessbucks is 75 mil, 50 spessbucks is 37500000 mil.

I don't k ow the prices for stock weapons in EU and we, as all I play is lw, but with these numbers you can make numbers for yourself.
>>
>>121737526
>>121737570
I'm not saying the games are bad, I'm saying that the 'lore' or story is bad most of the time. If the gameplay is solid, good.
However, the stories are always garbage riddled with clichés and typical tropes.
Dark Souls' story is non-existant and lorefags made up 90% of it in their own heads. Good move from the devs to be honest.
>>
DEEPEST LORE, when used effectively, helps guide players towards intended playstyles or otherwise hidden gameplay content, or to explain nonsensical features. such as actually looking in the UFOPaedia sometimes and knowing to protect valuable ayy entertainment, or newcom mentioning that soldiers somehow have AR displays to enable squadsight

Lore and characters are not mutually exclusive, nor did I state at any point that tactics games are not capable of pulling off story, characters, or lore; I actually provided four example franchises that do it well.

I simply said that X-COM is not story centric, nor does it need to be, as the lack of characterization in the game itself produces a different type of player experience altogether.

You actually addressed nothing in my post while pointing out something I never said in the first place. That takes effort. Good job.
>>
>>121738438
Not the same person, but right now all we know is that the f-35 is the most complex and one of the most expensive plane in the world. Unfortunately neither of these translate to combat effectiveness.

Its performance in dogfight with f16's is poor. Its much slower then other advanced fighters and has less range, so I dont think they make ufo hunters.
>>
>>121739680
christ man i was just trying to meme out on a guy, calm down, it's just clowning on niggas,

and either way, the TRUE CANON INTERCEPTOR is the weird futurized Su-27/33/37 from XCOM UFO Defense, and is probably the only interceptor design clearly influenced by a real plane
>>
>>121740098
Yeah I understand, its just i see the f-35 mentioned here every once in a while in reference to modifying current fighters for taking down ufo's, which doesn't make much sense especially in comparison to an f-22.
>>
>>121740401
tbf something like a blackbird with weapons on it is probably closer to whatever interceptor XCom is using

it's obscenely fast, pretty darn big, and it doesn't get into dogfights and just trades missiles with ships while pursuing at high speed.

but the newcom interceptors are clearly complete OC anyway so who even cares

Alpha Centauri did it right. Put out the story in little bits but do it everywhere.
You probably couldn't do that today, they'd want to make the three-paragraph interludes fully-voiced 4k pre-rendered cutscenes and they would go on for minutes. I love Valkyria Chronicles but I get tired of watching a half-hour of exposition before each mission.

Wee testing!

Was testing to see if maybe the issue with getting Mechtoid's Psi Shields working was because dropped in Sectoids were having issues. Tried Mindcontroling a Sectoid from the map but it didn't work out still. Must be an issue with the Mechtoid.

For shits and giggles, I gave my soldiers alien weapons. Superheavy Plasma makes them into a Muton Elite (complete with hilarious model stretching), what I assume to be the Cyberdisc gun fails to work, and the Sectopod's Cluster Bomb has interesting bits to it.

Using Cluster Bomb causes bombs to fall immediately the turn its used dealing 2 damage (reduced by DR, displays as 1 damage) and then fall at the beginning of the next turn as well dealing the same damage. Also destroys cover very well. Must be used while outdoors. Targeting enemies indoors will impact helplessly against the roof.

it's not "phantom pains", it's "phantom limb", and why not have something like a barrel of a gun that extends through the forearm, like a megabuster with fingers or some shit. or like the strike module there, it seems to have fingers but isn't it basically a hydraulic-boosted ballistic fist?

also the human MEC there has correct digitigrade legs, though he's a bit tall for his head and it looks like someone just mspainted him into a suit rather than modified his body. weird that they got it right on literally only MECs

Why is the Foundry so godawful in Vanilla?

There's only like, two projects worth doing. SHIVs come too late to be good compared to your elites, improving medkits is admitting you're getting hit, the pistol stuff is way too expensive when you could just move smarter and not get caught with an empty mag, grenades stop being super relevant long before you have ayy grenades (which grow on trees anyway...)

You can see that the top of the helmet is transparent and it LOOKS like there's a head in it, but the neck/shoulder is too out of place to make aatomical sense so I think (read: hope) it's goop

is there any footage of these things in motion yet?

ah. figured it out. kinda. I reloaded from the last tactical mission and it turns out something bugged to not show that england lost its shit, so I guess the game figured it can't continue. I'd had the "full panic" sound effect play with no dialog box coming up before so I figured it was normal

apparently it's a potentially game-breaking bug and the game will literally soft-lock if it somehow fails to tell you a country has collectively lost its shit

Help me /xcg/. I want to love this game, in fact it has everything for me to love it.

But I'm fucking terrible. I don't understand squad tile placement. I put units behind full cover, yet the aliens will most of the time be able to 1 shot me behind it and I don't know if I'm placing my squaddies on the wrong side of the board or not.

I've reset the game 4 times now because I'm unable to last beyond the 3rd month. I can deal with everything outside of actually fighting the aliens.

I don't want to lower the difficulty since if I can't handle Classic now, I probably never will.

Another thing I don't understand is the Enemy Within expansion whenever I start the game. Should I be selecting that over Enemy Unknown? Will I miss out on exclusive Enemy Unknown missions or content?

1. Flanks are a thing, if they flank you your cover is meaningless
2. Aliens are fucking bullshit

But what is flanking? Would it be easy to say that if my soldier is in the line of the alien's sight, while still behind full cover, it's considered flanking and I should move my soldier ASAP?

They certainly do feel like bullshit at times, like when my soldier is directly in front of an alien but there are 2 walls in between them and the alien still manages to land a critical hit.

Sorry for asking questions, I'm looking at every steam guide that I can on the subject of the fighting portion of the game.

>But what is flanking? Would it be easy to say that if my soldier is in the line of the alien's sight, while still behind full cover, it's considered flanking and I should move my soldier ASAP?

It's the angle, anon

Here, I will demonstrate

If in figure A, the alien still manages to hit for fatal death, that's just their bullshit succeeding despite a 20% hit chance

However! You too can bullshit the aliens in full cover

The reason it seems like a full cover shot succeeds more often for the aliens is because there's much more of them than there are of you and they shoot a lot more at you than you will at them

Therefore it is meet to make sure any discovered alien is eliminated by bullets, or can be eliminated by a grenade, in a single round, or else he may shoot you in the face

Minimizing risk is the name of the game

Objectively false. The best type of villain is the vile monster, the evil invader, the dragon in the den, the rapey lord of the manor. They're the ones who can be destroyed and triumphed over without sullying the narrative with pussified moral questions.

I had to restart classic 3-4 times because I kept getting killed at the Slingshot missions, or whatever the fuck they are called. Fucking thin men.

Anyway, combat is only a small part of being successful in classic, since to actively win in the long-term you have to heavily prioritize to squeeze out every advantage that you can as early as possible. Specifically: Rush lasers and skeleton suits. Make sure to push for satellite coverage every month. This is absolutely critical. I don't remember the exact breakdown anymore, but it's okay to lose one country to the ayyys. Anything more and your profit will take a hit.

Usually you want to lose a country from a continent you don't care about (because you won't be getting the bonus). So a trick is that you should be launching sats only at the end of the month, and usually for those countries that are in the red without anything that you can do about it. In other words, it's okay to ignore countries that you plan to launch sats for, and save those that you do not care about.

>>121825508

Just started enemy unknown, enjoying so far, but a little worried not making right choices. Got 2 questions. Will it be viable to play without trying to lose soldiers, or is it inevitable. Also when certain countries are in danger, how can I help them out specifically? I have to keep generating random missions while the days go by?
>>
>>121864174
It does, you can also just make the first shot on them with a scout since LR works against it.
>>
>>121867361
People have played vanilla through Impossible Ironman without losing a single soldier in the entire game. Not sure about Long War.
>>
>>121867361
Make sure to get as many engis as possible so you can build sats.(Do missions that award engis and build workshops if you can) That's how you keep countries from leaving for the most part. You might lose some countries but that's ok. Ironically, terror missions lower panic if you win them, those start in the second month.

Same for loosing soldiers, its not inevitable, but it is common. In one my classic campaigns only one of my soldiers survived the first two months. That's all I needed.
>>
>>121867361
The only reliable way to control panic in vanilla is to launch satellites over council nations, and protect the satellites with interceptors. There are certain story missions and council missions that reduce panic as well. Eventually when the aliens launch terror missions, if you do a good job you can drop panic in an entire region by a significant amount.
>>
>>121867361
>will it be viable to play without trying to lose soldiers

It's possible to win without anyone dying, but it's expected that you will lose a few soldiers.

>Will it be viable to play without trying to lose soldiers

Launching satellites over countries reduces panic. If you save over half of the civilians on a terror mission panic will go down over the entire continent the mission was in. Rushing satellites is pretty much mandatory in Vanilla since they protect countries from abductions and provide most of your income.

If you restart, go straight to the Enemy Within expansion if you have it.

>>121899171
Ayy weaponry so hilariously outpaces armor values that it's not worth trying to keep up. I think even Titan Armor + plating is like, 10. But by the time you get it, there's plasma rifles (if not heavy plasma) being carried consistently, which generally do from 7 to 13 damage, and melee units trucking around that do 16. Anyone having bad luck with a disc means their armor is getting shredded, assuming they don't die.

Maybe you should be concentrating on breaking LOS instead of treating it like oldcom and trying to autofire down everything in stand-up firefights down the street.

>>121904214
>should I stop splitting my squads
YES
As a matter of fact, you should NEVER split up.
>>
>>121904214
there is no such thing and in fact, just like oldcom, you automatically collect any relevant PHAT LEWTS associated with the environment that may have changed during the course of the mission

the closest thing there is to what you're talking about is downed UFOs, the more of them you destroy, the less you get at the end. this includes walls and floors, so take it easy with the grenades indoors. UFOs are a lot less robust than your dudes seem to imply. You also get a little line about taking it easy around power sources and flight computers, they are indeed brittle and worth way more intact than busted up (and you can't use busted ones for research)
even walls and floors are valuable, each intact wall is like 10 alloys or something.

>need to develop plasma cannons to reliable take down UFOs because they're so hardened and ayy alloys are so stronk
>you can destroy its outer hull with a typical modern frag grenade

what the fuck firaxis.

if alien alloys are so dense and so robust that they can't even be used in firearms because they shred their own actions and barrels apart, then why can my guy firing a normal assault rifle shred an entire ayylium wall at once in a single burst

honestly, the more I think about it, the more ayylium alloys seem closer to glass or stone than metal
>seemingly super sharp fragments (see: alloy cannon)
>incredibly hard but only reasonably dense
>shatters at the drop of a hat, presumably because it is so hard
>performs very poorly in collisions, especially with material like itself
it's basically just opaque obsidian, or possibly some kind of flint-like stuff

>>121904684
nah if anything it was worse in the old one because the maps were so much bigger and a lone dude lost meant a huge area you can't see anymore

now that maps are only like, one building each and way less open (and soldiers have 360 degree vision) there's not nearly as much you gotta cover for

OK, there is so many new/more aliens in this game its going to be incredibly hard! I know this means better weapons and armor for soldiers but how the hell can 6 soldiers handle hordes of chrysallids with big daddy and archangel fly thingy. I'm cancelling my preorder because this game is unbeatable.

Call me a skeptic, but an iron sword and a hover drone isn't going to do much against the monstrosities they're pitting against the player.

I think they've miscalculated their audience, granted there is a large amount of hardcore tactical players but I certainly wouldn't say it was half of the overall amount, because the audience in that case wouldn't be as large as it is.

Hardcore has never appealed to the general masses and I think they're appealing too much to HC and I think they're going to put a lot of their audience off the game with how much it's going to turn out to be a pain in the arse.

I absolutely loved the first one, I've played it loads and I'm still playing it. I really wanted a sequel but everything I hear and see about the game takes a little more of the shine off my enthusiasm. Granted I haven't played it but you can glean enough from all the news and vids to have an informed opinion about it.. and I keep saying "nope, nope..".. and it kills me to say that.

Just because they haven't talked about XCOM's upgrades doesn't mean they don't exist. Sectopods are scary in vanilla, but you get the tools to deal with them - I don't see why X2 will be any different.

In EU you could skip the first mission of Slingshot/Progeny and it would show up again, the rest of the mission chain was one time only.

In EW you can't postpone the DLC missions at all.

In LW it probably works like in vanilla EW.

I played XCOM twice on normal and didn't have an easy time. Never tried LW because I mainly play on XBOX.

It just seems like this time around Firaxis is catering too much to the LW and Classic/Impossible crowd, it's bad enough that XCOM 2 comes to PC first but if they make it super hard it's not gonna be much fun when you just want to squish some ayys.

Not everyone is super serious about these kind of games and treats them like a job.

It's more about the time commitment. How often do you have to restart if you play Classic or Impossible with Ironman?

I bet the people who actually play LW on the harder difficulties all have 1000 or more hours of XCOM.
>>
>>121929654
>XCOM 2 comes to PC first
>First

Too funny.

But seriously, you're overreacting. We've seen 11 different foes so far, if my counting is right. It's a given that they'll be spread out/linked to alien advancement and time progression, so you won't be facing Andromedeans with rookies. Based on the E3 demo (which is probably a little outdated, sure), it seems like the rank and file ADVENT will be the majority of the opposition, with 1, maybe 2 actual aliens as a boss of sorts. Chill until we see more actual gameplay.

I played vanilla EU once on non-ironman to learn the ropes.
Then I switched to impossible+ironman and beat it without any noticeable problems. As long as you have any ability to learn, it's not even nearly hard.

>I bet the people who actually play LW on the harder difficulties all have 1000 or more hours of XCOM.
Yes, but not because we're trying to beat it and failing. Instead, we have a lot of hours simply because we like the game.

LW and vanilla I/I is all about spamming overwatch for 30 turns, it's just not my idea of fun.
There's no real tactics in XCOM because you're forced to stay stationary in order to not activate pods you can handle.

If you want a real tactics game play Vakyria Chronicles, JA2 or Silent Storm.

Vanilla (and Straciatella) JA2 is fairly balanced. You can armor up until you won't get one hit by 'overwatch', you've got explosives to breach buildings and you can bring as many squads as you want to assault a sector.

You mean, Scouts Headshot Everyone To Death Chronicles? Yeah. Muh tactics.

The game where you just take your team of special snowflakes from A.I.M. and abuse game rules to death? Like, night attacks with a team of nights ops specialists?
Or do you mean it as a game where you just do stupid shit for fun, like training your agi to 100 via running back and forth near the (half-blind) predatory cats?

>Silent Storm
Ah, that one game where you can beat everything with a single person of some OP class (like engineer or soldier), just by knowing the maps and enemy placements - without even breaking a sweat?
Oh wait, I forgot you'd have to take a disposable meat shield on some missions, so that you won't rely on RNG.
>>
>>121937415
PS: Valkyrie Chronicles isn't even a tactics game, by the way. It's a puzzle game - you take specific actions without any random component (or with a random component that doesn't matter to the outcome), you get specific enemy response (again, no random), and you beat levels by finding correct sequence of actions. Exacerbated by the fact that there are lots and lots of possible sequences that result in your win without any problems.

Long war's medic has revive, rapid reaction and smoke & mirrors in the same tier, not suppression.

I do not know why are you saying people dont take revive, because I think everyone does.

Are you talking about this campaign?

Cause I didnt see today's stream, and hes stated several times before that medics are meant to be medics, not infantry cause they don't do as good of a job as infantry.

I take it this medic was Pvt Friendly? Cause thats probably why, also he doesnt plan on finishing this campaign which might be why too.

I personally take suppression on all my medics for that shut-down capability and every other ability is medicy. I believe most people even ignore suppression for steadfast when they make them psi troops.

I go
>field medic - suppression - revive - smoke grenade - dense smoke - lock'n'load(one medic is able to keep one alien locked down with suppression every turn) - savior
>>
>>121969274
>>121971371

While revive (and support nade/healing only perks) are decent, the idea is you won't have as many crit wounded if you've got the medic playing infantry, instead of pure support.

Revive+full support build is definitely nice on a few medics for base assaults though

I heavily use Goliaths, so I like making medics to support goliaths+emergency stuff.
This means they will Mindmerge every turn.
Steadfast->SnM->Paramedic->CDrugs->Sprinter->Savior
Medkits,Smokes,Mindshield

As someone whos played both, no, it's not.

Theres turns each side takes and you have a set amount of action points to make per soldier(in ufo defense, in EU/EW you have only 2, though some perks let you do more than 2 things a turn) and theres a lot of cover usage and aliens shoot, not melee.

Saying xcom is like space hulk is like saying dota2 is like starcraft. Same genre, very different.

That's a nice theory, forgive me if I never check whether it's true or not. I like my fingers attached to my hand.

As for the rest, that's basically that, yeah.
I know nitroglycerin is extremely volatil (thanks Crash Bandicoot), but I highly doubt XCOM would use it in combat.

So I was thinking about the story of xcom2.

The story is that xcom was cut after downing the avenger craft right? After that the aliens targeted the council and things went to crap.

So I was thinking that maybe that happened because they shot down the avenger specifically. Like it held the Outsider which would have accelerated xcom faster than the aliens wanted so they stepped up and were more aggressive than xcom could normally keep up. As I understand with EU its that the aliens are discrete at first as is xcom and things escalate with both sides. In 2 there is a fluke and the aliens blitz instead of going as they would have normally.

Another thing I wonder is if well have alien armors and mecs and all the other things from EW at some point.

I wish you can stealth a whole mission in xcom 2 not just in every start of the game. A system where you can remain concealed as long as the weapon used is silenced or with the use of melee and that you kill the whole pod in your turn while concealed this would be great in the later part of the game.

I really liked the way an agressive semi-stealthy approach allowed you to do sick combos with all those knives, pistols and stuff.
I expect XCom to take a similar approach, where you won't do complete stealth, but instead watch the enemies a bit, and then try to smoothly combo them down while popping in and out of stealth.

Should I even focus on saving civilians in LW terror missions?

I can handle this mission if I go slow but that means the Chrysalids will kill almost everyone.

To get the panic reduction I need to save half the civilians?
>>
>>122032097
>panic reduction
No, you don't understand. In LW, terror missions are the aliens' main tool to generate panic. Saving civilians in a terror mission minimizes the panic caused, but that's it.
Best case scenario, you save every last squishy meatbag and the country doesn't shit its pants anymore than it already has.
>>
>>122032097
Every single downed civies means more panic. So terror missions are for all practical purposes guaranteed panic. Go in, save one civies, make sure no one dies, and then focus on saving more civies. Basically, screw civs.

Xenonauts has its own flaws but with the community mod it's alright.

If you want something closer to the old XCOM games get it, you won't be disappointed.
>>
>>122046507
The problem with Xenonauts is:

1) The maps are REALLY repetitive, and I don't mean 'oh I've played these maps too many times', I mean they just aren't very interesting, being boxy in terms of layout and gameplay. You can't shoot from across the map or even from any elevated sniping positions because flying is nerfed in Xenonauts, so every encounter MUST take place at close range corner combat.
2) There are only about five different types of alien, with the age-old palette swap for variety
3) There really aren't very many tactical options since the enemies gain too much HP so you can really only kill them reliably using the heaviest guns; this means sniper and assault rifles are almost pointless after early game, and sniper rifles can't reliably one-hit anything IN early game anyway!
4) Following, unlike X-COM, which felt like you were roughly equal in late-game with each barrage having a chance to take your opponent out or get taken out yourself, late-game Xenonauts is chock full of HP sponges that just make it unfun and limits your options.
5) The community edition helps a bit, and it IS nice that you can completely level buildings by taking out supports, but destructibility is still MUCH less than X-COM. Having an alien hide behind a booth or a hedge which won't blow up from your fusion rockets is a mood-killer, and you can't pack enough rockets to blow up the entire map. Community edition fixes it a little by adding incendiary weapons, but they aren't as effective as X-COM and don't spread around the map.

>following
>>
>>122048225
>>122046507

6) Late game is much less fun than X-COM, because a) No Blaster Launcher equivalent, b) No extra breaching options for UFOs so you have to breach each UFO the same way every damn time, c) No psionics or psionic defenses, and d) All the enemy types are BORING, dammit!
7) Another thing, I feel like some elements are just there to make your user input less relevant. While manufacturing was quite broken in X-COM, Xenonauts does not offer enough player choices to make you feel like you have options even when poor. Even soldiers are a bit too expensive to be disposable.
8) Explosives are useless for you, but effective for your enemies. This is not like X-COM, where HE remained viable even in late game. Seeing a guy in a jumpsuit survive a pointblank plasma charge does not inspire confidence.

I will write a 'things Xenonauts did that are better than X-COM in a bit', don't worry, I'm not 'autistic Air Game fag who's played the Air Game too much and now hates it' so I won't go on and on about it.

I think it did around 35 damage? It was a terror mission on the L shape highway map and pic related is what lied for me in the intersection. I started from the bottom.

One more thing that Xenonauts is just bullshit about; You can't pack the rest of your gear into your dropship! No going back mid-mission to restock on rockets or change your gear!

Things Xenonauts did better than X-COM:

1) The extra weapon types and roles are actually a proper idea, just badly balanced.
2) Soldier loadout templates that are also
redefinable. Absurdly useful.
3) The air combat is more interesting. Airgame fag is wrong, if you pay attention to your squadron composition the minigame very skippable, and knowing about which fighter types (missiles vs cannons) are strong against UFO types lends more to player interest. The minigame itself is pretty dull. Not perfect, but then, what is?
4) Comparatively, the Geoscape is now more visually interesting, since instead of looking at graphs to get an idea of where aliens are doing things, you get on-map situation markers/reports for UFO activity instead and can send interceptors to check it out. Conversely, however, the game lacks graphs that are actually relevant (comparison of monthly funding changes, or complete funding change breakdown, for instance) and you cannot check backlog data to puzzle out where an alien base might have been made without you noticing.
5) The UI is better, but Open X-COM makes a lot of Xenonaut improvements to base X-COM, except for where it would break the visual design, so it's not a major difference today except for sprite fidelity. I think the only thing Open X-COM doesn't fix is the base assault flag spawning infinite battleships if you shoot one down with base defenses.
6) There's honestly not much difference between X-COM and Xenonauts in terms of features, honestly. I'd say that Xenonauts might honestly have overall LESS features.

Ttry the #bookz channel on undernet. Its an IRC room full of bots that collect ebooks. Type in !search xcom and it will generate and send you a text document with any hits it finds, after that you copy/paste a line into the chat (not including the info section) and the bot will send it to you.

>>122063820
Kinda sounds like you're better off replaying UFO or TFTD

>>122017432
Yeah, probably best to hire some more and maybe even build a SHIV or two.
Just got an abduction, terror mission, exalt mission and 3 UFOs within 2 days, barely managed to finish them all.

Next day a Raider and a Fighter show up but my ceptors were in no shape to take them down.

You have to edit the .ini sadly, since you can only put on one thumper by default.

And then another two Fighters, how are the ayys able to generate so many missions?

IIRC meld canisters give 16 meld, am I fucked?

No, you are fine up until 20+ meld. Then you should worry about a base defense. Mine happened in December, but for most people it's either late fall or winter

I think a Marauder would work best for that.

A MEC that's up front punching everything wants to be pretty tanky. Marauders can get SAA, damage control, repair servos, and Absorption fields all together. Maybe swap out damage control for CCS.

They get close encounters as a specialist perk which lets you shoot then punch each turn. It also gives them +1 mobility on promotion.

i remember a while back where was a HFY series where humans aren't the only warrior race, but there's another that are basically snek and they become best bros with humanity.

I think XCOM 2 drove the writer insane because the series basically stopped after the first trailer for 2.

not quite.
b14 goliath>b15 goliath>b15 marauder in terms of pure tanking.
But in terms of killing lots of shit while being tanky, marauder is definitely #1.

9/10 It's ok.
>>
>>122067405
Oh yea, tanking wise you can really just forget about it.

It's really inconsistent too. Elites do 5 damage on average to my marauder, but sectoids pull in more. I don't understand the system.
>>
>>122067285
It's wonderful, maybe someone more talented can iterate on it.
>>
>>122067619
probably because of the variable DR from SAA, DC and AF.
You can get up to 10 DR with a mind merger. It's a lot of fun
>>
>>122067619
Absorption fields are a percentage based reduction in damage. The more damage dealt, the more reduction. So scratch damage from weak units it more deadly than something like a sectopod

What do you fellers reckon, something like this?
>>
>>122067885
Im thinking i should maybe swap out CCS for DC and/or ranger for ATA
>>
>>122067885
CCS isn't that strong on a mec since there are no sweet shotgun range bonuses. I use DC. Run and gun is kind of fun, but close encounters and a mobility suit is more than good enough for most engagements. I'd go absorb or rapid fire
>>
>>122067885
Looks good, just get Core Armoring. Especially against heavy floaties

>>122068348
Yep, I ALWAYS take core armoring.

>>122068329
Its for a punch-focused MEC. I need/expect to be in the enemies face a lot, R&G is for getting there and CCS is for taking on berserkers/lids that get close plus the flanked meatbags that try to reposition, but i may switch it out for the extra survivability DC gives me.
>>
>>122067885
I would take VPT instead of BEO. You won't be critting so much without aggression and it works with CCS.
