Is it possible to include blood and gore in a pixel art game that doesn't have a super sharp, high-res art style? Does anyone have any examples of this? Games like Slain are always relatively detailed and relatively higher res than the "cutesy" pixel art games. Is there a balance that works?

My life is pointless, I may as well perfect this control scheme
>>
>>121624959
Development of Bloodborne began as development was being completed on the Prepare to Die edition of Dark Souls, released in August 2012. Sony Computer Entertainment approached FromSoftware concerning cooperative development on a title, and director Hidetaka Miyazaki asked about the possibility of developing a game for eighth-generation consoles. The concept of Bloodborne developed from there. There were no connections to FromSoftware's previous titles, even though Miyazaki conceded that it "carries the DNA of Demon's Souls and its very specific level design".[47] Development ran parallel to that of Dark Souls II.[48]

you should have realistic expectations about your game. if your game doesnt look amazing you shouldnt do a kickstarter anymore. that ship has sailed, it isnt viable if your game doesnt look very passable. if you showed me a screenshot i could tell you if it does or doesnt

>so what's the new in thing?
stop. the only way you'll make a good game is if you're passionate about the genre
>>
>>121626701
yes visuals only. also, the new thing is making a good, solid game and creative game that gives people something they cant play elsewhere. you do this through effort, hard work, good taste and creativity.
>>
>>121625916
it failed where des, das and even lesser das2 succeeded.

it also comes out as way too edgy

levels/textures and combat are sex, gehrman fight is sex, but it just has something lacking compared to other games. guess they come off more realistic with the light and the dark while bloodborne is just dark n edgy. I guess I can't call it a flaw since the whole game in the end suggests you where dreaming the whole thing and thus the edgy fits in like a glove. Or at least that's my take on it, no need to start a theory war here.

Progress: Scalable viewport by the player (Took a bit of poking to remove the letterboxing), added in speed limit (starts at 25 speeds), added in speed limit increaser powerup (adds 5 speeds to speed limit), added in helpful pointy-towards-powerup arrow

Known bugs: helpful pointy-towards-powerup-arrow doesn't want to be helpful

Things to do - Fix bugs, add more powerups, fiddle with hitboxes to make powerup collection easier.

Should I make it so it's just on proximity rather than on collision?

>>121620008

In GM there's 2 pre-made events for it ( I did it via add event, other, outside room (Move, jump, wrap screen, both directions), but codewise you could do this

Can't easily format in reply boxes, send help

rx1 = 0
ry1 = 0
rx2 = (room maximum width)
ry2 = (room maximum height)

if x<rx1{
x=rx2-1
}
if x>rx2{
x=rx1+1
}
if y>ry1{
y=ry2-1
}
if y<ry2{
y=ry2+1
}

Kinda did that off the top of my head. If it don't work then sorry.

>>121620118
If I go for speeds, I gotta have some content for speeds, and may alienate those who can't handle fast. Now it's up to the player if they want to go fast.

God it's good to be back at the dev seat.

Some stuff I've done:

1) redid my aiming reticle art. ammo segments look better at small size. Reloading now generates an inner ring that changes color to make it easier to see your active reload window against moving backgrounds.

2) You can now shoot while double-jumping. This lets you move more while applying damage pressure to enemies.

3) Quick attacking now aims at enemies (the anims still need a bit of work) regardless of movement direction. This lets you keep your attack focused on an enemy while you move around them... which will matter more at higher energy levels, where melee attacks shoot projectiles.

To anyone who is using C and making a game that runs in the cmd thing on windows.

Traditionally when i print out an array i do this

void drawScreen(int x, int y, int screen[][x]){

int i, j;

for (i = 0; i < y; i++) {

for (j = 0; j < x; j++) {
printf("%c", screen[i][j]);
}
printf("\n");
}
}

But it causes flicker because it prints each character out. So I was thinking how I could make less printf calls. then i realised i could concat the entire array to a single string and printf() just a single time with this code

void drawScreen(int x, int y, int screen[][x]){

int i, j;
int count = 0;
char string[(x * y) + y * 2];
char newline[] = "\n";

for (i = 0; i < y; i++) {
string[count] = 10;
count++;
for (j = 0; j < x; j++) {
string[count] = screen[i][j];
count++;
}
}
printf("%s", string);
}

Anyways to me this was huge, just thought id share

this is what im throwing around as a setting, I have lots of work to do fleshing it out and deciding what the gameplay is actually going to be like.

*opens with ww1 solider going over the top of the trenches, his mates dying all around him during the charge through no mans land.
*all wearing gasmasks
*gets knocked out by an explosion
*wakes up in unfamilar place surrounded by lots of old human skeletons
*game takes place in another dimension/another planet with a toxic atmosphere, people/beings/aliens from throughout the galaxy are randomly being teleported here for an unknown reason
*you only manage to survive arriving cos of your gasmask, your first quest is to find a permanent solution as the gasmask is only temporary.
*community of aliens have created a ramshackle society, they dont know the reason for the teleporting either.
*they only know of 1 other human ever surviving the transfer, POSSIBLE PLOT TWIST: he's the bad guy and hes a vampire (which is how he survived)
*robots/synthetics etc have made their own society away from the organics, theyre also being teleported here.
*you have to solve the mystery of the teleportation and find your way home.

thats what i got.

want to try to have something like either a good/evil allignment thing like KOTOR or a 'who you side with changes the game' kinda like vampire bloodlines.

But this could be you!

It's hard to tell what exactly your attack animation is but whatever is it's not quite working.

Generally a good attack is like this: Short hold, super fast swing (ie 1 frame), optional short cooldown. You can get it feeling good with just two or three frames.

Maybe it's just extra weird in what you've got because his weapon is always out, so it even more looks like it's not moving very far.
>>
>>121635090
why not just render each one individually?
it sounds like you only have one at a time printing, am I understanding correctly?

If that's true you want to say something like
[Line] renderMe = new Line(activePoints[0],activePoints[1],activePoints[0] + x_coord,activePoints[1] + y_coord);
//this would be in my code
then
if renderMe != null
print renderMe
this is if you are storing these strings as like objects, which I think is what you want to do

if you're doing multiple strings at a time you may want to do a 2d array then check if it's not null at each value, then print it out if it isn't

might be misunderstanding though

Indie/amateur game dev honestly has me depressed as hell. I feel like I'm constantly under water and that it's no longer about fun or the enjoyment of the craft but rather struggle and survival. Everyone around me thinks that I'm a failure because all I've got to show for all of the hours I pour over my computer is basically a canvas with all of the underlying engine components. Non-devs just don't understand and I'm beginning to lose hope, too. I have one game on the google play store and it has earned $10 to date (six months in total).

Well i use two for loops to print the map, the map is a 2d array of ascii characters.

and so i just would printf map[i][j] which is one character at a time. so if its a 20 x 20 grid thats 400 printf calls.

So now I just add each character to the string and after each "line" i add \n to he string so printf gets called once and the entire square map gets printed

That's like asking if there are no people who like arena based top-down twin stick shooters on Steam. Of course there are, but the audience is so small that not even an indie dev with a quality game can make a reasonable profit without a lot of luck.

There's also trixels (disappearing pixels)

I don't see the problem. What if my sprites are just scaled differently? isn't a pixel just a single point of light on the lcd? who cares if a virtual "pixel" is scaled differently than another one? so confused

>That guy's argument is right though, on mobile you have lots of games released every day while on Steam you have way less
this is the same exact argument people use for white privilege

if a million niggers move to iceland, do icelandic people suddenly gain white privilege because they commit less crime, are more competent in general, etc.? no. It's just that you have more niggers in Iceland. Simple as that.

On mobile, you have more shitty, ignorable games. Go to any indie dev site and you'll see people saying "WHY ISN'T MY GAME SELLING" and it's just breakout clone #18728937161872638712.

Having 10,000,000,000 breakout clones does not increase competition for a good and unique game that brings something to the table. EXACTLY THE SAME is true for Steam. Yes, they are different markets on average. NO, your arguments are not correct.

Yes. Privilege is an absence of consequences. If the icelandic people treat the blacks badly, then yeah, whitey got privilege.

>Having 10,000,000,000 breakout clones does not increase competition for a good and unique game that brings something to the table.

if you are just starting and are learning something from each project then that's perfectly fine to do. If not, then delete them all and only work on one thing. Don't think about anything except that project. If you have an idea, add it to the project instead of starting a new one, you will be subject to feature creep, but it's better than 4 unfinished projects.

>>
>>121646298

If they treat them equally they will end up in prison, representative of a lesser share of the skilled labor force, etc. because they are not racially the same as the native population. Also privilege is about right and entitlement NOT necessarily a lack of consequences you jackass.
>>
>>121645687
I think you're ignoring an important variable which is valid for both markets, which is what the definition of "good" and "unique" is

4 years ago a game like RoR was good and unique, but if it was released today I'd bet it wouldn't be nearly as successful because what is good and unique today takes a lot more work and attention to detail than RoR had. As time moves on making some good and unique gets harder and harder because the bar is set higher and higher by previous good and unique games. On the mobile market this cycle happens faster than on Steam simply because games are generally smaller, meaning they take less resources to make and less time to consume.

On top of this, in general, users on the mobile market are not willing to research as much as PC users are. This is just how it works. People who play games on PC just spend more time reading and watching things related to games than mobile gamers, which means that getting exposure is harder. This should be visible by just the way the marketplaces work: Steam lets users do all the work via tags, curators, reviews, community hubs, streams, friends list and all that, while mobile marketplaces usually don't have half those features.

>>
>>121650612
because you're incrementing j after you check its value, so the first time you check it, its value is zero but immediately is incremented to be 1.

The 0 (false) triggers the || (OR), which evaluates J again, although now since it was previously incremented, its value is now 1. But, since you are again incrementing it immediately after you check its value, its current value of 1 is assigned to i, then its value is immediately incremented to 2. The other OR statements are skipped because the value of j (1,at the time) was non-zero, or not false

So j should be 2, and i should be 1 i think

I've got an MMORPG background so I'm used to treating everything as a server controlled state with clients sending and receiving packets to sync their local state to the server state.

Sooo it was basically starting from the premise that there was a dedicated server and then undedicating it so to speak. Adding in exceptions that say, "Oh yeah, if the peer input you're handling is your own don't worry about encapsulatng it for broadcast just go ahead and apply the input."

I can already see a few points where it could desync. But the worst possible desync only results in a client thinking they scored a hit that they didn't or vice versa.

Client receives a packet that tells it to generate the projectile moving in the indicated direction. Movement isn't handled locally, which is to say the local client doesn't get to say where they are, they only get to tell the server what movement they're making and server tells them where they are. Same is true for the mammoth.

The only element the client gets to simulate for itself is the spear and therefor also the collision, but the client's collision event is impotent, just makes the particle and destroys the spear. The Host's collision is what actually decides if the mammoth loses health.

Memeing aside, I always hate level design since I feel like it's not as intensive as coding or doing art/animation. It only feels like real work when I'm designing a level, realize there's a cool element I could code up to make it more interesting, then spend the next hour designing it.

I've always liked level design because I just like working with human spaces in general, so I find it pretty useful. It's not "intensive" and the tools are always super easy to use, but it seems just as important as anything else.

I probably shouda gone into architecture or urban planning instead of "interactive media" and electrical engineering and shit, I don't actually enjoy any of that shit at more than a hobby level

Can somebody help me?

can I have multiple of the same buffer types in a buffer?

like 1 unsigned 8bit and 2 unsigned 32bit buffers?

or can you only have one of each type,
I ask because buffer_read() doesn't have a way to specify which one, just the buffer and it's type to read.

Do I just have to read twice, or seek past the first 32 bit?
Using Game Maker if that helps, don't know how it works in other engines.

If I hadn't called him out on it he would have never posted anything at all and he'll probably continue not to. If we want a better thread we need devs to actually post their progress. I've been arguing with you so far but just so you refrain from replying to him anymore, the person accusing you of being mothdan is the resident psychopath who stalks devs. Ignore him.

Is this real? Are you really making this? Because furry shit aside, I am a complete sucker for Egypt-themed pixel games. Do you have a devblog?

I'm new to gamedev; how do you approach collisions for a 2D top-down game like this? Layering also. Is it hard to get the particles, characters, etc. going behind certain buildings or objects but also in front of other ones? It seems like it would be a lot to juggle.
>>
>>121669261
Looks about right.

In C#, how can you instantiate a class while passing it a variable? How would you need to set up the class to be able to receive a variable when it is instantiated?

I hate buildings. I hope people don't mind them being too small. this seems to be common in similar games (final freeway 2R, Oh deer), because it's impossible to put buildings in a scale that's both reasonable in comparison to everything else AND realistic (since they tend to be hundreds of times bigger than cars)

Hi guys, I'm making a 100% science-based dragon MMO. You guys will be the first to see the beta :)

I'm making it in Cryengine and so far it is going great! I have the terrain sculpted already after only a week.

Jesus fuck so I just tried to get Unity's WebGL working for demo day, this is the laggiest shit ever. My game's 3d with lots of shit going on and I was getting 80-90 fps with the old web build. WebGL brings it down to like 10. Help

not that guy but for collisions its the same as 2d, but with no gravity anywhere and you make it so that the collision boxes match the sprites in a way that makes sense. for instance, the collision box for the player might be only a small rectangle near his feet, because when he gets close to a wall since you want to make it so that the sprite itself goes a bit over the wall (to give the sense of depth). all colliders for all objects are like this too. always with some space left for the depth of the object

as for sorting particles, characters, etc, the most important part is just sorting everything that you have to draw. im doing this very simply with 1 line of code:

table.sort(self.game_objects, function(a, b) return a.y < b.y end)

this returns objects that have lower y first (they're behind) so that they're drawn first, and objects with higher y last, so they're draw last. things that are drawn last will be drawn over the first things, so everything looks like its in order. using the objects y position works well, but for some objects you might need a small offset depending on how you do things. on tpo of this i use many layers, but anything that needs to be sorted in terms of depth has to be on the same layer, characters, objects, effects and so on. some effects like particles though can be in their own layers because they dont need to be behind anything (they can be in front of everything that it doesnt usually matter)

to get a height/z going you need to do two things: draw the object at x, y - z instead of x, y and to add a shadow sprite at x, y so that the player doesnt get confused when an object is flying

Spoonfeed me please, how do I get silverlight to work with this? It's not one of the build options in Unity. Will I be able to host through itch.io?
>>
Unity bros, which is better for player control, character controller or rigid body/physics?
>>
>>121670704
Character controller for typical side scrollers or fps, rigid for any kind of ragdolling or special movements you want to be able to do
