Paladin is not good and won't be good until 3.2 at the minimum, and Astrologian isn't exactly weak but struggles to really synergize with the other two healing classes.

If you like playing as a hybrid style and want to be able to do good dps while you have nothing to heal, you should like it.
You can switch to scholar on the same character, but you will have to level it from level 1. Also the base class is called "arcanist". It shares levels with summoner, which means that you also get a dps class for free. Scholar and summoner are two different specializations of the arcanist class.

Comparing to WoW, scholar has the dots of a warlock (like 4 of them), can spread it to all enemies with a single button press, has the shields of a discipline priest while having a smart healing fairy like a shaman totem that can keep a tank alive in easier content while you dps.

Yeah, prior to HW there were no Abilities that had any resource cost other than their own cooldown, and I'm pretty sure that even in HW DRK is the only job with skills like that, but it's still not a strict rule.


Napkin math on how the new Shield Swipe will work out in regards to PLD DPS:
- The range of GCD-based damage on Paladin will typically range from a low of GB-RoH-RoH (combos) to a high of GB-RA-RA. That averages out to a range between 238 and 255 potency-per GCD.
- Spirits Within is 300 potency on a 30s cooldown, Circle of Scorn is 250 potency on a 25s cooldown. So they're both 10 potency-per-second, which (at a standard 2.4s GCD) totals out to 48 potency-per-GCD.
- Sword Oath, if it's active, delivers a 50 potency attack (the actual auto-attacks use a different damage formula, but the Sword Oath bonus uses the standard one), roughly every 2 seconds, depending on your weapon. So that's around 25 potency-per-second, if you're in Sword Oath, and around 60 potency-per-GCD.
- The new Shield Swipe, assuming you can use it on cooldown (which is a fairly safe assumption) is going to be 150 potency, on a 15s cooldown, totaling out to the same 10 potency-per-second as Spirits Within and Circle of Scorn - an additional 24 potency-per-GCD.

So theoretically, your Shield Oath damage range in 3.0 is 286-303 potency-per-GCD (not counting auto-attacks, or the 20% damage penalty), and in 3.1 will be raised to 310-327. That's roughly an 8% increase to your non-autoattack Shield Oath damage (which I'd ballpark at about a 6% overall Shield Oath DPS boost).

Your Sword Oath potency-per-GCD range in 3.0 is 346-363, and in 3.1 that'll go up to 370-387. Sword Oath's damage dampens the relative boost you get, but it's still a 6.5-7% boost to non-autoattack (remembering that Sword Oath is not an auto-attack despite triggering ON auto-attacks) damage. That's probably going to amount to about a 5% increase in Sword Oath DPS.

On a clear video everything has been smoothed out for the most part, and you're only looking at the success aspects. People are doing mechanics right and already know how to perform said mechanics, you don't see the weeks on weeks of progression they do to get to that point.

A3S is fairly difficult, in terms of the DPS check that goes into how tight mechanics must be performed to keep perfect uptime in early progression. I would honestly say it is not harder than some WoW mythic raids but it will give anyone that wants it a challenge

Yes, but Paladins block pretty frequently, can force a block every 30s with Sheltron, obviously get a free one during Bulwark, etc.

In practice it might be closer to 400-500 extra DPS, but in my limited experience playing Paladin, that Shield Swipe button feels like it's almost always lit up.

There's plenty of 2.0 content to recycle, though, and they should be doing that pretty aggressively.

We got three versions of Ifrit, Titan, and Garuda, and that worked out fine. We've only had two versions of Leviathan, Moggle Mog, Ramuh, Ultima, Odin, and Shiva (Not to mention Bismarck, Ravana, and soon Thordan). There's also no "This is designed to be hard enough that we can give you decent loot for it" version of any of the other trials that are in the game, from Chrysalis to Steps to Ultros and Gilgamesh, or even Cape Westwind if they felt like they needed to scrape the barrel.

If they're understaffed they're understaffed, and fair enough if they can't pump out tons of completely content on a skeleton crew. But there are ways that you can generate a lot of content with a small core team, and not being afraid to do a reasonable amount of content re-use is one of the best ways to go about it.

I think that this game is successful enough that nobody should be giving them participation medals or really looking at their content flow any different based on how small the development team is. It's their own fucking fault if they run into production limitations caused by not having enough people on the team.

That said, the patch looks "okay", and could actually turn out to be fun if the airships are good and if the casual dungeon/raid stuff is at least the entertaining kind of easy content instead of the torturous sort. It's not really blowing my socks off, but to be fair, it's the 'support' patch that's built around the 'progression' patch of 3.0, and 3.0 was such a shit foundation that there are some pretty hard limits on how shiny you can make the turd.
