Best hunting ground is generally marshes. Start at late night, climb ontop of the highest avaliable terrain - taller forests, hills or mountains - and zoom out with ctrl plus the substract key. Look around, repeat for any other high points that have decent view nearby. Some areas are richer in game than others and due to how the spawning mechanisms work there will be slightly more game in areas where you've spent time. Not enough to make or break anything, but it's certainly there. I like the south-eastern parts for my settlement, since it's close to the njerpez and quality driik shops in addition to good hunting grounds. You can get an uncanny amount of reindeer hide and elk hides in the north, though. Just have to ship it halfway across the map if you want to spend it, generally.

Watching some youtube videos kind of tell me that spear hunting (i.e. tossing javelins) is more effective than bow and arrow hunting. Is this generally true?

Also, do you have a chance of finding random game when travelling on a zoomed in map? Or do i have to travel the zoomed out map in order to find large game?

I think I'll start up north, get a foothold and create some kind of settlement, then head for the Driik once I have some hides to trade for tools that I need.

Only if you have a very bad bow/arrows, or your spears skill is significantly higher than your bow skill. If you have a hunting bow or maybe even a shortbow of normal quality together with regular arrows it should outpreform javelins. An exception is if you know the rite of iron - it works with thrown javelins. Or at least, it used to - I don't do much hunting besides bow hunting.

Definitely can only find animals on the world map. If you get some valuable small hides like rabbits or lynx you can save them to trade to the foregin merchants If you're going to transport your loot, use a raft - it can carry about 400 in addition to whatever you're carrying. Rowing is also usually faster than walking, and it's certainly less bothersome to do. You can even drink salt water without troubles. Don't hunt with more than 4-7% encumberance at the most - ten arrows, a bow and a cut or two should do. Each % reduces your speed, recovery rate, tracking ability and accuracy. Build your house by the coast. Try hiring a vilager! They can even help you chop down trees for your house. Dogs and cows are great, too.

You're supposed to stay in floor 50 until level 8 or so if you're afraid of getting one shot, and XP is scarse as all fuck so you'll probably farm Kuzdu for minutes instead of playing the actual game.
The wound point system is awful in practice, and it makes you spend tons of gold in tonics since you're always quaffing dozens of them to get your WP back up.

Not sure I like the messages. If you use the minimum size terminal (like me), your character and monsters can easily be covered up by the log. Turning on the option to center the map helps for now, but I don't know about later on with tons of things acting.

I know people are talking about the upcoming DCSS tournament team, but I'd like to briefly discuss a few last things about the /rlg/ team in the /vg/ League.

We are already signed up, but there's two issues I'd like to settle:
1. We need a goal horn (that ISN'T from a shitty roguelike), music that would play after someone would score a goal. (Sigmund has his own goal horn). It doesnt necessarily need to be from a roguelike but it would be a plus. It should be something upbeat and exciting (i.e. NOT the Elona login music).
2. There's a couple more roster issues. RNGesus and Easymode Roguelike have been sacked and need replacements.
You may also suggest other roster changes.

Nathan here removed the download on the sourceforge due to some copyright thing.

You know that you can post your morgue to pastebin, right? From what it looks like, you're just a melee dude with a little spell support. Stick with the mace and you'll be fine. Find a way to fix that rCx. Skeeh is really great, but make sure to take it off against anything that can hit you with cold until you patch that resistance.

Nethack has a lot of options, sure. I bet it feels good when you lure an iron golem on a rust trap. But there's a few that are so overpowered (Elbereth, conflict, cockatrice corpses, teleport other) that no one ever uses the rest.

Yeah it's a complete pain in the ass. use a staff/wand of haste monsters and a wand of heal monsters or throwing healing potions to keep your mount alive. Weaken the monster so your pet can get the last hit.

If you want to see it in action, do a half-titan anything and use your racial probing to watch it grow.
