Has DR as a series improved over time, or is it going downhill? I think most seem to agree that AE may be a low point, but that also depends on how DR3 turns out. What do you think /drg/?

I just watched the entire danganronpa anime in one sitting with little to no prior knowledge or experience of the series. It was pretty good, definitely memorable. Little butthurt Fujisaki had to die TWICE and was also a dude because s/he was my favorite character. Loses a few points for saying "amazeballs" unironically.

That being said, please shit on my face for being casual and getting everything wrong, what did I miss by taking the easy way?

The anime shoots through the plot at a break neck pace due to time constraints, to a deterrent to everything else. Everything is condensed and it doesn't feel as satisfying; the characters are woefully underdeveloped compared to the game as a result.

AE is hard to judge, because it seems like people either love it or hate it. Personally I think Nagito and Haiji were my favourite characters in it, and I didn't find the Warriors of Hope all that interesting. Nagisa was okay, but he was something of an exception, and I still can't say I understand why exactly Monaca wanted a big war between the Despair Remnants and Future Foundation. Obviously she says it's to produce a successor to Junko, but why did she even think that would accomplish that?

Even if her plan had gone perfectly and Komaru had taken her revenge on the kids for killing her parents, how would she then be like Junko and not say, Haiji, or the other adults? She still wouldn't have Junko's analyst powers or experience. On top of that, I don't see any reason to believe FF would lose to the small handful of Despair students left when Izuru is already heading off to the Neo World Program and the Ultimate Soldier is already dead.

I think I just wanted more explanation for how the things attributed to the Tragedy happened, with some more appearances of DR2 characters. And whether or not there really is a 'Despair Disease', and if so, what it is. Even just a lazy explanation like "oh yeah, there is, she just researched it with that psychiatrist guy".

Is this ever mentioned in the game itself or any supplementary material? I don't remember seeing anything like that in DR2.

And if Despair Disease is not something that actually exists, how did the police and militaries of Japan (and populations of other countries and their respective governments/etc.) get caught up in it? I suppose at least you could reach and say Sonia Nevermind spread some stuff in Europe, but other than that it feels lacking in explanation.

Even barring that whole thing, I'll be bummed if we don't get some explanation for who or what Future Foundation really is, since they seemed to be around at least by the time of DR1. Is it a UN thing? Is it something founded by the remaining Japanese government? Is it a thing started by some member of the Hope's Peak Steering Committee who wanted out? If that's left to mystery by the end of this series then I don't know what to say.

By the time you even have the choice to destroy the controller, Haiji and the Big Bang Monokuma has more or less finished out the Monokumas in the city, at least to the extent large groups of adults could stand outside and not be attacked.

If what Monaca said was anything close to reality and FF would just barge in once kids started dying en masse, I admit I fail to see how people with talents like 'breeder' or 'chef' or 'photographer' would have any relevant role in a battle with an organisation who, by that point, would likely just be bombing the shit out of them.

Things like 'mechanic/engineer' and 'nurse/medic' could probably make a difference of some kind, but we also have no idea what the size of FF really is either. Presumably they have a base somewhere, with enough cohesion and stability to have all their operatives wear suits and send them out on missions, but beyond that it's basically impossible to say.

I suppose so, and Pekoyama/Kuzuryuu could probably come in handy somewhere, but I'm just saying the better half of those people would be useless in a fight of any kind, just based on what we know about them.

Nagito has already been slashed at the knees, Mahiru, Hiyoko, Ibuki, Fake Togami, and Teruteru all have skills unrelated to combat or technical skill that would be of use.

And this is being pretty generous in assuming that people like Akane and Nekomaru would be just as good as a Sakura or something, which is probably not actually true.

You're thinking too much of it. It was literally Junko going around, manipulating people with power and those with talent as she eaved a web of despair. Of course it sounds unbelievable, but hey, the game is very wacky to begin with.

Even Junko/monokuma say in the last trial of the first game something on the lines of "What does it matter how it happened, it's not like anything I say would be believable or matter." This is because the world itself doesn't matter a whole lot. The game is more of a focuses on the characters personal feelings as they struggle with the balance of hope and despair within them.

From the player's perspective, sure, but that doesn't mean the characters in the world have no reason to give a shit about it? In DR1, it's only natural that people would be shocked at the prospect of both the collapse of the world and that they had been given amnesia. But even the 'amnesia' that the game said the explanation "didn't matter" for, ultimately *was* explained in Danganronpa Zero, as it told the story of a time when Junko was experimenting with induced memory loss, and worked with the Ultimate Neurologist to do that.

Now it would make sense to say that Future Foundation and the survivors of DR1 likely care about how the world is doing, and in AE people with connections to the Towa Group likely did/do too. So whether or not the player has an incentive to care about the world at large, it seems out-of-character that the people within that world don't address it much.

It's a wonder FF even allowed her to join them, and that very few of the people around her seemed all that concerned about it after the initial reveal in DR1.

This is why I believe that the Zero Escape series sold better in the West but lesser overall than DR. ZE has more deeper world-building and the story is incredibly water-tight with little plot holes however, most series in Japan must be marketable to sell well. This involves having a cast of really memorable characters that resonate well with you, thus, you're likely to buy more merchandise of them, talk about them, review the game. DR was more character-based while ZE story-based.

You have pretty much ruined the first game for yourself. The anime skips out on a lot of characterization, case details and... well, pretty much everything that isn't the KEY points for the cases.

I have no idea how you managed to enjoy the Dangan Ronpa anime. Its pacing is god awful and all the characters seem boring and flat, making it impossible to care about them when they die. But with that said if you enjoyed the anime you'll probably love the game much much more.

You may as well jump over to the games considering how the anime will never-ever get a second season due to being a bomb in Japan, and that the second game cannot work any other way aside from being a game.

I didn't even realize it wasn't the same author until I read the bio at the end I just assumed it was Kodaka that's how good it was.
Kirigiri's character is REALLY well adapted, her cockiness and her being a loli is the perfect combination, she tries to be polite but once she realizes she's dealing with an idiot she'll go quiet. I don't know how NISA translated it but her catchphrase "if I say this much surely you can figure it out" gets used hilariously often, the protagonist isn't really all that smart in terms of a detective, she will think every thought a normal person would but the Kiri will show her the hidden secrets the killer used patrionissingly even though the protag is older! It's just genius!
In terms of side characters, oh god prepare to suffer at how good they're written and then meet their fate...

Also the use of suspense with Kirigiri's hands (minor spoilers ahead may ruin experience if you highlight) you know her hands will get burnt but every se of fire will get your heart racing, thinking "is this where it happens? It's litterally extra trials with enough time to have you form your own ideas and theories then they just break those and give a huge twist!
