The surface doesn't care about the Darkspawn unless there's a Blight, and the one in Origins was ended so quickly there are people outside of Ferelden who think it wasn't an actual Blight.
The series was also never meant to be about just the Wardens and Darkspawn. In the original plans the fifth Blight was just going to be background fodder for the first game.

Lyrium previously has been presented as an extremely addicting substance that is used to control the templars while also causing madness and all sorts of addictive properties. Cullen, while also leading all the Inquisition forces, kicks the habit suffering little more than a temper tantrum of throwing shit at a wall. Turns out all you need to break the "addiction" is have someone tell you "you can do it!" and there is no negative repercussions. Cullen is so fantastic and amazing he can have the Inquisition templars to follow his lead and kick the habit as well. Turns out everything we learned about lyrium addition was completely false thanks to Cullen's shitty plotline
