/irg/ is a proposed general for indie RPG's, such as LISA, Yume Nikki, OFF, and the like. Games that are too small or old to warrant their own general.

Are they ever going to fix the mistranslated line in Off
>>
>>120483150
which one?
they'll probably never fix those occasional untranslated lines or the slightly questionable grammar here and there, either, so...
>>
>>120483628
The important one at the end about
Hugo being the creator of batter and queen and not the other way around
I mean its an extremely important line about the plot and it expresses the opposite of what it should in the translation
>>
>>120483715
hang on didn't they change it?
i can recall having read that that line was corrected in a more up to date revision of the translation
>>
>>120483829
Well I found out recently when I played the game for the first time, I downloaded the v2 translation and the line is still there all wrong.
>>
>>120483943
i could've sworn it was fixed for me
dunno, sorry
if it hasn't been fixed yet you can always step up to the task and fix it yourself
and maybe some of those , erm , other odd things which look quite french ?
>>
>>120484032
>and fix it yourself

I wouldnt know how, what do I need?
>>
>>120484076
i guess you'd need to find rpg maker 2k3 and learn how to load rpg maker games in it, or something like that
maybe rpgmg can give you some advice on how to do that? edit existing games made in rpg maker 2003, that is
>>
>>120484138
Eh, Ill try to figure it out later If I feel like it.
>>
>>120484226
alright
if you manage to figure out how to do it, feel free to share it with me so that i can contribute a little as well

I've tried Always Sometimes Monsters recently, after having had it in my library for a while. It's kinda okay, although I want to explore it more. I guess it's a nice change, seems pretty refreshing even if it deals with somewhat heavy shit.

Kinda want to try To the Moon, which I heard is very good.

Tried Science Girls for a bit, and it was kinda fun, I guess.

Tried The Sacred Tears TRUE and looks very promising.

One Way Heroics is pretty good, but I don't want to dish out that much money for the improved version.

Finished Eternal Senia and daaaaamn, that was very good while obviously working with very little. Some of the best boss fights in a while.

Last and least, I've tried doing a few runs of Eaten Alive and wow, it has to be one of the worst games I've ever played. Gameplay is bad, permadeath is bad (not that I even managed to die, mind you, but it's just bad in a game where the content is the same every time, it's just padding), protagonist is unlikable, and dialogue is edgier than a 4 bladed battery powered razor.
>>
Anyone tried Sufferer? It's free on the maker's page.
http://www.foxeye.squares.net/product/sufferer/index.htm
It's about a girl in a swimsuit who fights monsters and pirates ARPG way on the island she's stranded on, while looking for a way home. Bears have inns and shops, because why not. It also has intensive underwater sessions, which are Fox Eye's trademark (if you're interested in underwater or have a drowning fetish, definitely check out the website, there's a couple more free games and some commercial ones that are rather cheap).

I find it rather fun, personally.
>>
So if I'm making an rpg can I talk about it here? Or is there another general for that?

I played One Way Heroics to death- lots of fun there.

>>120498051
Yeah there's an /rpgmg/ general thread but if you're more theory-crafting, ideas and whatnot I don't see why it couldn't go here. Actual mechanics, scripting and such would probably go to the /rpgmg/ though.

So I'm playing Lisa the Joyful, I'm not looking for spoilers but for anyone who beat the game I'm looking for their opinion.

I recently beat Sindy Gallows, it cost me pretty much the last of my Rando Rations and Jerky. The merchant isn't available anymore and the only viable option to get more jerky I can think of is going back to Mr. Beautiful's world and killing all his pacifists.

I still have Dice Malone and Big Lincoln to kill. Should I just start over and try to preserve my healing items better?

I have to say this, the temptation to give into Joy is much stronger in Lisa: The Joyful. In Painful I always felt I could rely on my party members whenever Brad was withdrawn and Brad's skills still were effective. With Buddy alone during different parts the temptation to take Joy is way stronger; even after knowing what you learn in Painful.

I'm the "I'm making an RPG" anon from before. Hi. It's called Band Practice.
It's a mostly story-driven adventure of a young Pup who wants to find his friends so he can practice some cool jams with them. But it's not that simple. Through a series of circumstances, he finds himself travelling through space, making stuff happen a lot.
You can explore the entire solar system (and a bit more!), finding stuff to do and things to see.
There's also gonna be tons of endings and unlockable stuff in subsequent playthroughs.
It's Band Practice.
Questions?

The reason why this general is a dead general is because a) indie games have a negative reputation to them and b) currently, Undertale is overshadowing this thread, which even though it keeps all the furfags and degenerates out, it also makes this thread essentially a corpse drained of its vital fluids.

Kind of sucks really, I really wanted an active place to talk about whether or not I should be streaming my Lisa playthrough.

Just a related example offhand, Undertale's final boss themes are all better than that.
Brokentooth isn't even the best battle track on Joyful and is far from the best battle track when taking both Joyful and Painful into consideration.

I liked Brokentooth more than Undertale's final boss themes, but they were less memorable than most normal boss themes anyway (stuff like Undyne's theme or Mettaton EX of course blow most LISA stuff out of the water). In general both games have incredible soundtracks, Undertale's is undeniable quality but LISA gets bonus points for being amateurish and at the same time very unique and fitting the mood.

So for these here indie rpgs that we're fond of, I assume the traditional 'Dragon Quest' that RPGMaker does isn't exactly hyped for it.

We want weird shit and time travel and morality and all that? That seems to be what defines the 'indie' lately.

Or am I just wrong?
>>
>>120644030
anything that's indie and memorable will do, i'd wager
>>
>>120644030
>traditional 'Dragon Quest' that RPGMaker does
What do you mean by that exactly anyway? A lot of these games that we've been talking about have been made in RPGMaker and I don't think I'd consider them Dragon Quest like.
>>
>>120644204
Fair enough

>>120644353
The very base of RPGMaker is to make Dragon Quest clones. Meaning a 'young hero finds friends and saves the world' wouldn't have the same impact that something like LISA, To the Moon, or Undertale (or Always Sometimes Monsters to a lesser extent) would have...because the games aren't designed that way.

They're designed to be an indie jRPG, more than anything. People have just gone into the 'weird or time travel or morality' mentioned above as the main theme of their game...rather than beating up monsters, getting exp and saving the day.
>>
>>120641167
>Schuld

I'm still disappointed by the plot twist
>>
>>120644353
i think he's referring to classic "go into town, kill thing, proceed" kinda stuff

>>120644204
to expand upon what i am trying to say
games which provide a unique experience or otherwise really shine among the sea of little rpg's made by people are what i'd say worth a mention on here
so even your traditional "dragon quest" like game might be worth playing through if it's unique somehow, be it through delivering an interesting atmosphere, to telling a memorable story, to having well-developed and interesting characters, or simply showcasing unique features you rarely, if ever see in games
>>

>>120644823
Ah okay, I like that answer a lot more. Reason being I'm just messing around with RPGMaker for fun but I don't have the artistic or musical skill to craft something that'll have a unique atmosphere, so I'm going with my roots.

Hopefully the story will be memorable and the 'well-developed and interesting characters' is always my foremost goal.

So mostly I guess we'll just see what happens with what I do have and we'll proceed from there.
>>
>>120644686
But RPGMaker is a rather powerful tool, and saying that it's only good for making Dragon Quest clones is like saying that a crowbar is only good for prying nails out of wood.
To expand on the other point you're bringing up, 'beating up monsters, getting exp and saving the day' and being memorable or good are not mutually exclusive.

Ultimately indie games by their nature don't have large pools of resources to craft a highly technical game with high fidelity. Indie games generally have to rely on a gimmick or innovation of some kind that makes them memorable (For popular examples think Undertale's narrative being novel and interesting for this generation of players, or how Minecraft found a way to allow people to apply their imagination in an engaging way.)

That is the reason why most of the games we might be talking about have 'weird shit and all that'. It's one of the easiest ways to have an impact on one's audience and makes the game more memorable.
>>
>>120645487
>I like that answer a lot more.
well excuse me for providing a short quick response princess

>I don't have the artistic or musical skill to craft something that'll have a unique atmosphere, so I'm going with my roots.
maybe you can find some people who can help you with that on here or over at /rpgmg/
not saying that you need to be some sort of artistic master or mozart in disguise, though

really, i think it's important that in order for your game to shine it needs to be unique and show it somehow

when i started playing off i was intrigued by those strikingly colourful environments, the judge speaking in such an odd fashion, the weird and yet perfectly fitting tunes and the general look and feel of the game

undertale has an interesting concept of not requiring you to kill anything and instead offering peaceful solutions for basically everything

i think you can see where this is going
>>
>>120644686
What are you talking about? LISA, OFF, Space Funeral, Hylics, Gingiva, To The Moon, etc etc etc were made with RPG Maker. RPG Maker isn't just for "making DQ clones about the hero and friends", it's a decently powerful tool for creating all sorts of RPG and adventure games. The fact that it uses basic DQ gameplay if unmodded also doesn't mean shit, LISA used a default RPG Maker battle system and it's completely different. It's entirely up to you to craft the feeling of your game with graphics, music and mechanics. RPG Maker is a game making tool, not a sandbox make your adventure game.

Unless your gripe is with the basic RTP resources, in which case I guess you have a point, albeit poorly communicated. If you are serious about making a commercial indie game with it, you better be able to make unique assets yourself or at least capable of hiring artists and composers. Ultimately though there is potential for a good game to be made with generic RTP assets if you can craft a compelling story or create unusual gimmicks or mechanics that are good enough to attract the attention of at least a small part of the indie crowd.

Okay, I'm gonna be that guy. So Off won't run for me presumably because of a resolution problem, is there any way to get it to work without downloading something that won't make my antivirus shit the bed? That's what happened last time. Ran for 5 minutes.

>>120495560
To the Moon was okay. Just okay. It ran on a frustratingly tiny screen and it doesn't go fullscreen. Music was fair, I thought it'd be godly because of all the people hyping it up but it just didn't feel that great. The only reason I teared up at the end is because I sort of forced myself to.
>>
>>120718807
Are you sure it's a resolution problem? That sounds a bit odd. What exactly is the issue and did you install the fonts it needs?
>>
>>120719087
I'm getting a DirectDraw error and everywhere I look there's this Cherry person that says to use AnotherFullscreenMode, which I've tried, but that's what made my antivirus go nuts. I did install the fonts. When It did run, it ran perfectly, until, well, it didn't.

>>
>>120720026
OFF is just kinda like that. I wouldn't say it really picks up anywhere, except when plot-relevant stuff comes to light.

It's not really something you play for the game. More the story, the tunes, and the artstyle.
>>
>>120720232
then I guess I'll drop it since the plot and atmosphere are coming off as kinda obnoxious and I'm finding it tedious.

Rando unironically, quite literally never did a single thing wrong. Actually I personally found him too perfect of a character and thought LISA could use a scene or two of him struggling with difficult, morally ambiguous orders as the leader of the Rando Army, or something

I think Rando was fine since he was a good image of what kindness leads to in the wasteland, along with some party members. I found it endearing, but sad, how useless he was when it came to stopping the people he loved from doing horrible things. Yado wasn't bad either, simply because he was so wierd.

git gud that's how joking aside, use terry to piss-locke him with verbal bash - if an enemy is pissed there's a high chance it'll attack themselves. Also Olan can use rapid arrows at level 10 and it's really useful. You could also take the scrub way out and just use joy.

Here's three suggestions for you.

1. Rando preparing to eat beans and toast with a little heart over his head to show it's his favorite food

2. A frontal drawing of Buddy using her flash move of lifting her poncho exposing her breasts; maybe with a subtitle on top or bottom saying "You've become flustered"

3. Brad when he had hair and Dusty with a first place martial arts tournament medal. Either them walking side by side or Brad carrying Dusty on his shoulders.

Just some ideas I'd want to see that haven't shown up in fanart yet.

>>120857873
Why would you regret saving the world? Breaking the light bulb also kills Niko, so he's fucked either way, no matter what you do. That thing which wants to destroy the world (I can't remember its name, I played it long ago) outright tells you that too. You might as well do some good if it's like that.
>>
>>120864992
If you break the light bulb, Niko doesn't die. They get sent back to their home, completely safe, but the world itself does dies.
>>
>>120865409
That's what everyone said, but I thought it wasn't like that. When you start a new game after breaking the bulb, it's almost the same as the scene when you quit the game and start it up again. I played it as soon as it released though, so I might be misremembering the game. Maybe I should play it again.
>>
>>120866204
Nah, that's the ending you get if you don't break the bulb. If you send the kid back, the game won't start back again and you will only get a message "the savior is gone"

>>120863183
Sketching's easy peasy. Anymore LISA drawing requests? I'm a bit hammered but good to draw another or so or will probably post em tomorrow.
>>
>>120871212
If you want, I can give you some advice on Capella's Promise, it can get pretty hard if you don't know what you're doing with your character builds, and there are no guides of it (I know because I had to start a new game out of that reason, right in the last dungeon, and redoing ~30 hours isn't fun).
The Amber Throne's easier and more straightforward, and you can actually find help when you're stuck.
>>
>>120874628
Neat. So by character builds should you craft roles for your team or try to balance people out? I know the 'gist' of how the system works (something about equipping items or something that change your build?)

And I'll probably look into both on Monday. Finally got a day off work.
>>
>>120875184
Definitely craft roles, make everyone focus on only one Specialization of their own (there's a reason it's called that). I made the mistake of focusing the main character on all of them and everyone else on two, and most enemies were almost impossible to beat by late game with the outdated skills I had, hence the restart.
Also, make sure to equip everyone with an appropiate Megaloma, i.e, a Combo guy with one centered on Offense and Agility growth, a Space Mage with HP and Magic (the help section in game gives you the stat/Megaloma reccomendations). It may not make much sense now, but the game will give you a general outline. The problem is, it only gives you that, and the system is not so intuitive, so apply this when you get into the first few fights. I gave everyone a role depending on their main weapon, and it's worked really well, so ask me if you can't really decide what to make your party members do.
Have a happy grinding.
>>
>>120877057
Interesting. That actually sounds like a lot of fun. If daylight savings time gives me more time tomorrow I might start then. I did pick up LISA on the sale but Capella's Promise sounds a little more up my alley.

Because the people said it themself. The world isn't totally saved by putting the lightbulb back. Everyone will still continue to suffer. Breaking the lightbulb would end the suffering of everyone including Niko because he'd get to go home again.
>>
>>120872084
There's still those two other suggestions. Off the top of my head I'd like to see how you'd depict Olan, Nern and Terry crying and/or stalling during the final fight against Brad. either all three of them as the group or just one of them if that's too many to draw.

I just finished replaying it. Apparently, the Entity's mood changes depending on the state of the world, so following that logic, it would try to make the world better after saving it. And many people did say that, but there were also some who preferred to keep on living. In fact, most wanted Niko to put the light bulb back on. The squares and/or decay of the world might also be because of the Entity, so maybe they assumed the wrong thing? You make Niko restore the plant people race too. I mean, even if there's suffering, things evidently DO get better. And he may not get to see his family again, but he has a whole world that thanks him for saving it. There's also that extra scene after the end where it's implied Niko lives in the starting house.
Imagine if you make Niko break the light bulb, though. Not only do you leave him traumatised because he just left a world to die, he'll have to deal with that for the rest of his life. He does see his mom again, but I sure as hell wouldn't be able to be the same after that journey. Suffering will always exist, but it's better to save the world, because it does get better. Niko has the accomplishment of saving the world, and I'm sure that the people would take care of him too, so he won't really be lonely.

Kinda like in Joyful with the campfire discussions. I would have liked it if your party members conversed with you when you would rest at an Inn. It doesn't have to be story important dialogue, just small talk before heading to bed.

It's such a shame that the guy who works on it barely ever bothers with it at this point in lieu of personal projects and stuff. The stuff already in it is amazing enough already, but still, it could become a pretty goddamn well-made fangame with enough time.

You can give an OFF fangame by the name of HOME a shot. It's kind of eh in some of the decisions made, but honestly, it pulls through with much needed difficulty in the OFF universe as well as a more somber OST that''s custom but still pertains to the original shit as much as possible. It's worth a try if you really want to give it a try.

Other than that, Middens and Gingiva is a fucking fantastic example of fucked up surreal shit gone wrong in the RPGMaker list of absolutely must-plays, which is one of my favorite games, even though it does make me nauseated from time to time with some of the decisions and junk.

If you're looking for surreal and silly, Space Funeral's a hell of a ride, and the fan-made sequel to it is as well, considering how practically well made it is compared to the original.

That's just off the top of my head, though. There might be more, but those are the obvious few.

Nauseated is a bad term. It's moreso like unsettled or rather off-putted by the sheer volume of quantity rather than quality.

Don't get me wrong, the visual direction for Middens/Gingiva is astounding, but I found it kind of cluttered in some areas where there wasn't a lot of focus or thematic approach. The beginning of Middens is kind of this way for me, since it was just off-putting in the way that it wasn't really too much to look at, but at the same time, there was a lot of shit going on as well as a lot of clashing elements.

This does make sense, in context. It's the Rift clashing together various amounts of communities and things into one heap of nonsensical bullshit. But, it felt as though the author had way too much fun with it. Instead of having fun with it one way like Space Funeral, it was moreso or less just kind of all over the place. It was the jack of all trades, in a sense. It was beautifully amazing how well the visual elements were utilized and created, but it wasn't well thought-out in some segments as to how they were introduced or placed.

I love Middens and Gingiva, don't get me wrong. I'm replaying them as we speak. I'm just more at home with Yume Nikki and the like because there's a cohesiveness to it, as well as the fact that I'm more comfortable with it since I usually have dreams that are a bit similar to the kind of stuff you see in LSD Simulator or Yume Nikki to begin with. It's really why I got into the series as much as I have in the first place, so honestly, my views on this sort of thing might be biased because of that.

Homestuck was on hiatus at the time, and OFF had a similar art style/sense of humor/tone to Homestuck.
So naturally, the fanbase for Homestuck kinda gravitated to OFF. It's fucking cancerous and garbage, with people shipping and doing annoying fandumb bullshit.

I actually really like OFF too. It was charming in a lot of ways. Its combat was garbage, but for the most part it used its gameplay mechanics to add to its weird meta narrative and I appreciated that. It's the kind of weird experimental shit I like in these little indie games.

>2002+13

I will never understand this shit with you people, sometimes.

If we're talking in popularity, though, they played it after Starman/tumblr was done with it and the like. It surged back into popularity considering some mainstream Let's Players got their hands on it.

I don't ever remember it becoming a "meme", though. At this point, it's still just a obscure kind of game in the RPGMaker game-list to play whenever someone wants a good game for free or something like that. Starman.net translated it for the sake of it being a pretty damn well good game, and the French community was speaking wonders about it enough to get some people from tumblr to even draw some shit about it before the translation even came around. It's never been a meme, it's just always been sort of a introduction to actual good RPGmaker games, like how Yume Nikki is an introduction to RPGmaker games that don't actually use RPGmaker as it's intended purpose.

As for your comment about the game being boring and bad, I'm gonna have to disagree with you, there. The game was lacking fucking awful in terms of difficulty in some segments, but it made up for it in design originality, as well as a sound and music direction that managed to make the most out of whatever the hell popped up out of you. It got boring around the final stretch in terms of gameplay, definitely, but up until the Room, I thought the game balanced it nicely in-between the puzzles and other stuff that flowed well with the aesthetic and shit
>>
>>121007506
It's frankly surprising how large the amount of overlap between the people who like Homestuck and the people who like OFF is on some parts of Tumblr.

OFF is way better than Homesuck by a long shot, but they are similar in a couple of superficial ways.
>weird unexplained setting
>bordlerline nonsensical plot about person(s) sent to a strange world with bizarre rules and conventions
>characters are primarily white with black outlines, environments are colorful
>good soundtrack
>story takes some edgy sad turns later on with the deaths of prominent characters
>offbeat sense of humor, self-aware lame jokes, silly characters
>male cast members drawn in minmalist reductionist style allows yaoi fujoshits to write shitty fanfic/draw shitty fanart of them as handsome gay boys buttfucking

It's just similar enough on a surface level to draw some people in based solely on how much it can kinda remind them of Homestuck.
>>
>>121007249
I actually found out about the game through Homestuck General so I suppose that makes sense.
I guess it's just weird to me that this bizarre and extremely dark indie RPG with boring mechanics from years and years ago suddenly caught on with a (relatively) large group of people.

But Homestuck's fanbase was swelled years ago by Hetalia fans finding that series' fanbase too problematic so I guess these people just pick weird shit at random.

>>121007598
>Meme
>Any unit of cultural information, such as a practice or idea, that is transmitted verbally or by repeated action from one mind to another in a comparable way to the transmission of genes.
If this isn't an adequate word to describe something that rockets from total obscurity to a fair level of popularity with mountains of fanart, fanfic, shipping, etc. in a very short span of time then I don't know what is
Fad, maybe? But then what's the difference between a fad and a meme? Duration, I guess.
So OFF was a fad, then.

> As for your comment about the game being boring and bad, I'm gonna have to disagree with you, there. Oh the atmosphere was wonderful, don't get me wrong; I wouldn't have finished it otherwise. But the actual combat mechanics were generic JRPG with all the fun stripped out and none of the elemental attacks seemed to matter at all, and the encounter rate was high enough for this to make the game somewhat of a bore between conversations.

Honestly, you hit the nail on the head when talking about the combat. I'm still one to think it's alright, but honestly, that's me just remembering the good parts and not the times where I was trying to push along and get past an area. Thank the god for the Secretaries in the purified zones being a good surge in difficulty/battle design, or else I wouldn't have been able to get those dozen levels to make it go by that much quicker.

>It's moreso or less just people using the word meme for any reason whatsoever that kind of tickles me the wrong way.
It's because "meme" has become a meme which is sort of what I was going for but anyway

I don't really have any positive memories about the combat myself. At the time I was playing a lot of MegaTen games and when you're comparing OFF's worse-than-generic RPG Maker combat to shit like Press Turn or even Persona's system, well, OFF doesn't really come out on top.

Thanks Dr.Yado

So what really was Yado's plan in the long run? I mean even Fallout supermutants were humanoid, intelligent, and Master was convinced they were capable of procreation. Joy Mutants are literally just giant, misshapen, barely mobile, permanently high toddlers. I get he wanted to be a god and also probably get his kicks (I mean, Sweetheart ought to be implied to be his new "wife"...) but ruling a bunch of barely sapient Joy Mutants doesn't sound like a fun prospect even for an insane megalomaniac like him.

Maybe the theory where Olathe is a self-contained dimension as the result of the White Flash and Yado orchestrated everything in order to lead an army of joy beasts in conquest of other worlds makes a little sense.

I did it. I chose the Judge ending.

So basically Batter was a demon all along? I helped him kill my own wife and child?
>>
>>121055884
Did you fight Sugar?
If you did, you'd have heard her say something about the "scary ducky" beating her when you won.
To the people you fought and killed, that's what the Batter always looked like. When you fought him, you saw him as all of his foes saw him.
>>
>>121056176
Who'd sugar?
>>
>>121056287
Did you revisit the purified zones?
>>
>>121055884
Nah, the "demonic" version of batter is just an artistic depiction of Judge's perception of him. He doesn't actually change physically. (Mortis Ghost confirmed it somewhere)
>>
>>121056391
No. Of all the times I went back instead of forward, I didn't go back before I fought the queen.

Why did this Sugar kid get so little screentime? Was she Zacharie's girlfriend or something?

Also, who's this Pablo dude Zacharie keeps talking about?

>>121055884
By the way, the ending is left open for interpretation for a reason. But technically from all the pieces of evidences in the game and from a friend who knows Mortis Ghost IRL here's a few truths:

-the plot of OFF happens in our world, after an hypothetical world war 3 that wiped out humanity
-Hugo was an ESPer, he created the world of OFF from what knowledge he had of the world as a kid (which is why those 5 elements and their descriptions feel like they came out of the mind of a child)
-The 3 guardians he created to govern the zones are basically every child's imaginary friends
-He realized eventually that the world he had created was stagnant since he had no actual knowledge of the real pre-war world.
-He decided a plot, inspired from that Ball-man comic he read as a kid, spectres attacking the zones, and a batter who'd come to kill the spectres.
-But Hugo lost control of the spectre....to the player, at the very beginning of the game.
And the rest is history. So yeah, Batter is both Hugo's interpretation of a father figure, and his son since he "created" him technically.
>>
>>121057276
Pablo is the Judge's name. Judge is implied to be more of a title I guess.

I'm guessing that means you didn't get the true ending either, eh?
If you want to get it, you have to:
Go back to the purified zones and gather up all of those 5 elements Zacharie wants from you, and give them to him.
He'll ask you if you want the best weapon in the game or some other card item.
Take the card and beat the game with the Judge.

Zacharie, Sugar, and Hugo are the only actual humans living in the world of OFF.

>>121057538
>-But Hugo lost control of the spectre
I meant "lost control of the batter" of course
>>
>>121055884
>first spoiler question
I think the author said that it wasn't that the Batter transformed, or that it was his "true" appearance all along; rather, it's symbolic of how the player sees him. At first, he looks like a human baseball player because you're on his side and helping him on his mission; at the end, though, you have the choice to decide that his mission is evil and side with the Judge to stop him. He looks like a monster because you see him as a monster.

One fan theory is that the Batter simply looks different to different people. You see him as a human, though it's made clear early on that he's not. Others see him as an Elsen, a spectre, a "ducky", or the monster at the end.

>second spoiler question
One important tidbit of information was mistranslated. The Queen refers to Hugo as "the child we brought into this world", but it's actually supposed to be "the child who brought us into this world". In other words, Hugo created the Batter and the Judge, even though they both think of themselves as his parents.

One fan theory, based on imagery from the Room, is that Hugo lost his parents in some sort of apocalypse, and tried to use his supernatural powers to recreate the world, using Vader Eloha as a sort of proxy. The creation went wrong somehow, possibly by something as simple as a child not knowing how a functional world works, and he ended up making a world where all the inhabitants were doomed to suffer. Thus, the Batter chose, or was chosen, to end the world's (and Hugo's) suffering by destroying it. Note that there's a lot of imagery regarding sickness, so some people believe that Hugo was a terminally ill child on life support, or at least a metaphor for one.

Of course, this is mostly guesswork. Given how cryptic OFF is, one can only speculate what's really going on.
>>
>>121057638
>Take the card and beat the game with the Judge.
You can beat the game with either Batter or the Judge to see the secret ending. (In both cases the world is basically purified enough for "them" to arrive)

>>121057856
to further the points I gave in >>121057538 Hugo's powers were enhanced by chemicals given to him by doctors. And the Elsens would be based off those doctors (their looks at least).

Now that I think about it, the nature of the world of OFF, with all those puzzles, is kinda reminiscent of those IQ tests given to children.
>>
>>121057538
>But Hugo lost control of the batter....to the player, at the very beginning of the game

Who am I, the player? Where did I come from in all this? For what purpose?

>>121057638
Just did it. This was pretty unexpected. Are the apes some kind of meme Mortis came up with? Are the Apes Hugo's creations too or are they above him?

>>121057856
What happened to the reality around Hugo when he made OFF?
>>
>>121058304
>Who am I, the player? Where did I come from in all this? For what purpose?

Well since you saw the secret ending there's no point hiding it. Your actions were all planned out by the apes. Whether they put you in control of the batter or not we don't know. What's for sure is that they aren't Hugo's creations.

Also to answer your last question Hugo pretty much erased the remainders of reality when he created the world of OFF, BUUUUUT

Are you ready for some fridge horror?

Ok here I go.

(Remember in the game when you find a note from someone, saying that they "ran out of oxygen" ? But wait, Elsen breath "smoke", not "oxygen". Whether smoke is oxygen doesn't matter, it's the term that matters. Where I'm going here is that there's been other humans that survived for a while in the world of OFF. But they're all dead now. Only Zacharie and Sugar made it alive.
>>
>>121058693
Well that makes sense. One last question though.

What in the everliving fuck was happening at Area 4 of Zone 3? Why was the big headed dude asking for help? Why was there blood on the controller?
>>
>>121059052
Sugar is like a high-octane drug for Elsens. He was going through withdrawal.

The blood on controller was probably not important.

I'm going to first assume that you're running it legit through Steam. The first suggestion that I have might be to verify the game files/uninstall-reinstall, but since you say you're booting it up just fine then I'm not sure that would be useful.
So, have you started The Painful at all?
What happens when you say it crashes?
When does it crash?
Do you have any idea at all what you think might be a cause of the crash?

A DOS box pops up, loads a few things or something and it closes itself along with LISA.

I have a few things to clear up about Off.
1. The batter did absolutely nothing wrong. He was removing degeneracy from a that was fucked up beyond repair. The game is similar to the story of the great flood in the Bible
2. There are two types of fans when it comes to Off. There are people who enjoy the game, and its atmosphere, and then there are people who furiously masterbate to Zacharie and have a folder on their computer dedicated to him.
>>
>>121075593
I would also like to add that Zacherie adds nothing to the plot and themes overall. He's just le epic quirky meme character, and if you like him you should feel bad.

Unholy_Heights_Artwork_6.jpg

Has anyone here played Unholy Heights? If not I'd like to recommend it to people who like tower defense.

It's a tower defense in the sense that you recruit monsters to defend yourself and your tenement building. The monsters are looking for a home so you recruit them to live and pay rent while also protecting your loot.

It's pretty simple as there is not really anything complex combat wise but you can allow the monsters to raise a family to gain more monsters to go out and defend. There is also various monsters that do different tasks such as tanks, dps brawlers, ranged bowman and magicians, etc.

The soundtrack is pretty comfy too, it's well made and really sets the mood in the various stages of the game. The artstyle is also consistent with its cutesy like vibe, though it may be a turn off if your not into that style. Another thing to be said is that because of the way it is set up people may find very repetitive and may find difficulty is some areas. The difficulty aspect though is usually the case of not knowing the enemies capability, resulting it being more of it being trial and error.

That's what I got to say about, I personally enjoyed the time I sent on it. I think it is worth the price of 3.99, though can't say for all. Hope you consider checking it out, not sure if my description of the game is adequate enough.

The Desolate Hope

It's free and brings a unique air and atmosphere mainly by its artstyle and it's gameplay. It switches between platforming, to a top-down shooter, and to JRPG battle segments. The explanation for these is also pretty clever. The soundtrack is pretty good, especially the battle themes. The lack of explanation for how the segments is a legitimate complaint for some, as they can be easily missed in the dialogue. I personally enjoyed a lot.

Do note that there is a lot of flashing colors in the battle segements, and to some the UI may not be the greatest. The difficulty spikes can also be a pain if you don't prepare beforehand.

Personally I very liked Eternal Senia, it has very good boss fights, which is great for an ARPG and difficult to find in indie ones. Is my love for an old RPG maker game worth 115 bucks?

Normally I wouldn't say so, but that hoodie also looks crazy awesome.

Thanks for the links, I'll probably get one, which'll have OFF earn a place in my heart forever.

Watching an LP of a free game is ridiculous.

I'm here for the LISA circlejerk

Just finished it (not the joyful DLC, yet) and I really liked it, the humor and language were great, really reminded me to finish Earthbound.

I didn't know there'd be different endings, I kept both my arms and her nipple intact but got the end where you beat rando then buddy and brad hug and he turns into that mutant and crawls into a hut with buddy there. The bad ending right?
>>
>>121205461

What's the difference if you save Buddy's nipple? Is there any new dialogue or do they just skip that discussion at the end?
>>
>>121210815
>No Lisa figures to collect

Honestly I'd want all 30 of them but the first buys would be Brad, Nern, Terry, Olan. Followed by the team I mained which were Shocklord, Birdie, Jack and Olan. Jack replaced Shocklord after a joy mutant bit his head off...

R.I.P you magnificent bastard! ARMSHOCK FOR LIFE!
>>
>>121222316
On my playthrough I gave up the nipple to save my bros and there was no dialogue for it.
There are also epilogue endings for No Joy used, Joy used, and Pain mode (Pain mode taking precedence over joy use).
>>
>>121222750
I saved my bros too because I had spent time leveling them up in wrestling, plus they were the ones I felt most emotional attachment towards.

Really I'm not sure what canonly Brad would do in that situation. During the ending he seemed relieved at first that his team showed up, until he realized what they were there for. I would think Brad couldn't bring himself to be responsible for 3 team members deaths, even if it meant someone harmed Buddy.

Also there is dialogue for it. When Brad talks to Buddy about her eye wound he also remarks "and..your chest. Is it ok?"
>>
>>121223189
Oh I missed that line.

You know that's something worth discussing.

With what we know of Brad, what do you think his own choices would be through the game?

>Save Terry
>Let Columbo take Terry

>Joy
>No Joy

>Selfish (both arms intact)
>kinda selfish (one armed)
>Selfless (no arms)

>Nipple
>No nipple meaning letting it get cut.

For me I think it'd be save terry, kinda selfish (over time becomes less self-centered and more empathetic), No Joy, and no nipple (due to his developed empathy).
>>
>>121224591
With that narrative I think he'd dump Terry off on Columbo.
>>
>>121224861
Considering Brad could have just left Terry on that tree, I think of it as Brad not wanting his random good deed to go wasted over a few magazines, Jerky and some Joy that he's already trying to quit using at this point.

Can't really say it'd be a pragmatic choice since Terry is worthless at the start. I like to think of it as the spark for his journey toward reaching out to others.

>>121224591

>good endings
>LISA
You can just check the wiki.
>>
>>121231369
I've read it, it just states what the endings are How do you get the inoculated end, is there just one key choice or does it matter what I do in the early game? Because I'm sitting here trying to decide whether or not to trust rando
>>
>>121231714
Wait you haven't finished it yet and you're reading the wiki to decide which ending you want?
What the fuck?
>>
>>121231882
It's too much time to invest to get the shit ending. Not like visual novels where you can just skip the text up until a critical choice, you have to grind all the way through again. Even if you make a save at every choice. I got my fill of the gameplay in the first game, now I want to see the story pan out.

what's the general consensus between Yume Nikki, .flow, and 2kki? Which one is best? Or are they all good in different ways?

Of couse not counting the fact that without Yume Nikki none of the others would exist, just based on a purely objective standpoint

One key choice family. You get the vaccine and you have the option to take it or to not take it. However it's not a "take it" "don't take it" options.

Just use context clues about the stuff you do in the game. It should be easy to figure out which option is the vaccine choice. Leave them

np, I recently beat the game myself. I missed a lot of the Easter eggs and extra stuff so after I got my ending I just looked up the other endings and Easter eggs I missed.

Without a walkthrough I got the inoculated ending and the end dialogue that goes with the "False god" achievement. Not sure what I did to earn that ending though.

Finished with Lisa the Joyful, I'm thinking I might play OFF as my next game.

Do you need to have played something else beforehand?
>>
>>120880376
Been playing it on and off since Monday. It's really neat in that it's just a fun spin on a standard jrpg. I like the darker themes with the slave-trade and the 'good guys' being the 'bad guys' (at least so far).

Only problem I have is that they always seem to target my casters. Exclusively. I may just have very poor 25% chances, but it seems that it's my Space Mage and regular Mage always getting hit while my 'Warrior' and 'hunter' pretty much aren't touched.

Are there any 'taunt' mechanics for the warrior types eventually? I'm nearing 11-12 on most of their main specializations but not seeing anything yet.
