They then decided that their purpose in life was to gain power and that's how they became meta, like a self aware RPG hero who's been grinding for stats because the player makes them. Also, Chara before genocide route was just some kid with issues, so they are different characters.

I saw Jerry at Grillby's in Snowdin yesterday. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything.
He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?”
I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my order, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw Jerry trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen burgers in his hands without paying.
Grillby at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Sir, you need to pay for those first.” At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter.

When Grillby took one of the burgers and started calculating the costs on the cash register, he stopped him and told him to calculate them each on paper “to prevent any loss of WiFi signal,” and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even think he has WiFi device. After he calculated the price of each burger and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting him by yawning really loudly.

I think that the number one problem with Chara is that Toby left so much up to "interpretation" by the player that you could say virtually anything about Chara and it could be true, and you'd have no proof against you.

You play as Chara influencing Frisk and you play as Frisk himself. A theory I heard that made sense to me is that Chara is the narrator and he just makes comments like a kid throwing a murderous temper tantrum in genocide.
That's evidenced by the fact that Chara does sometimes talk in white text in Genocide, that Frisk talks for himself to say different things and even if you select a prompt he says it his own way that you can't see, and because Chara's determination is the determination Frisk is using in canon(Chara says this at the end of genocide but he realizes that the player is controlling everything with his determination and goes full meta).

I keep having this terrible idea for an almost-genocide scenario.
Frisk obsessively tries to achieve something impossible (for example saving Flowey/Asriel) reseting over and over.
Eventually frisk ends up attempting a genocide run, coming all the way to sans sparing them. Frisk, unable to continue something they never really wanted to do in the first place, gives into sans' offer of mercy, getting inevitably dunked on. This leads to a complete mental breakdown of frisk, as they are unable to cope with the situation.
I'd be interested in the following aftermath to be honest. Maybe a dialogue with sans of the genocide timeline as they explain their situation.
And maybe their interactions with all their former victims as they begin anew.
