One dismal realization that has really started to dawn on me as I approach 300 hours with this trainwreck is just how unambitious the gameplay design is. Every game before this had creatively expanded and refined the core gameplay design of the previous entry, expanding or streamlining the ability set while treating us to a host of novel new items, enemies, and systems to experience. Each new game made effort to meaningfully improve, evolve, and iterate on the core mechanics.

>mgs3 gave us cqc, camo, knife, food, stamina, animals, healing, unbelievable attention to detail everywhere, first try at online, subsistence brings first free camera, cool things to experiment with and discover everywhere
>mgs4 gave us third person shooting with shoulder button, crouch walking, prone aided cqc, stun knife, weapon customization, standing pat-downs, mg mkII, psyche meter, emotion ammo, full competitive online, technology and easter eggs everywhere
>mgspw gives us base building, r&d, mission structure, fulton system, supply drops, 4 player COOP

>mgsv comes out and is actually conspicuously regressive in terms of mechanics
