I found the boss fights on the whole better than other Sonic games, but bosses have always been a sour spot for the series so it's not saying much

It's still my favorite 2D Sonic though. The soundtrack alone is almost enough to raise it that high/ Press Garden is also the best Zone in the series

They fucked up with their execution as bosses near the end of the game.

Only Knuckles gets the really cool Heavy King fight - while Sonic and Tails deal with a not-hard just frustrating boss on the motobug.

Then its evident that Titanic Monarch Act 2 was to be a boss rush where you fought each of them (besides the King) at the end of the 4 sections. This got cut - because they're insane to put 4 additional bosses when there is a 10 minute timer - and got pieced into the Eggman final boss's attacks.
However, removing it makes Titanic Monarch 2 feel bizzare in how its sectioned off, and the Final Boss can be a drag with the transitions if you don't just kill it fast the boring way.

The Mania team had too much attention to detail in the rest of the game for the oversights to have been their fault. The lackluster finale and missing stage transitions were more than likely due to executive meddling. I bet they had a whole different story they were going with until Sega ordered them to make Mania a Forces prequel near the end of development.

They bothered to give the HBH genders and had them act like their own thing against Eggman most of the game, on top of the Forces tie-in at the ending. If they're not either the super secret final boss to convince Forces kiddies to buy Mania, then I don't know.

As far as memorable goes, they're usually not the shitty boss fights in this game, so they had that going for them. Gunner is fucked since physics went Sonic Team during his fight, and Magician could be a bit cheap due to having to wait for her to be in a form for a bit before you could register a hit, but they're otherwise better than most of the fights that just drag on within the game.

Is anyone else just generally bothered about this game tying in with a mediocre main Sonic game that may be Forces?

We have this gem here with a neat simple premise and the true ending is moreso a callback to the true ending in Sonic CD, but because of the noise the Phantom Ruby makes and all the transitions to the past stages it feels like the Mania team was forced to leave hints about Forces.

...and it just... leaves a sour taste in my mouth. Like, one again even now SEGA just couldn't help themselves and had to do ONE THING to hold back either someone else from going full original, or whatever.

Probably fucking Iizuka. Fuck him.

Sonic Unleashed... the boost gameplay is everything I wanted in a Sonic game, to me, boost gameplay is what Sonic advertises himself as in all media except the classic games and it's how it seemingly "should" be but I am glad it's not only boost boost.
