Why?

You and me anon, you and me. I literally expected to Atlus to never bring it after how Legend of legacy bombed and how they're probably too busy with their own 3ds to localize, but everyone who played the alliance alive says it's probably the best furyu game to date. So hype now. 3DS is right now the king of JRPGs.

Its style is still pretty weird compared to other JRPGs, so I doubt it'll get very popular, but it gave me a very Skies of Arcadia vibe in its presentation

Basically, it's SaGa-lite
If that doesn't mean anything to you, then you'll probably be lost when playing it, but it's pretty forgiving and at least tries to diverge into its own style instead of being a full SaGa clone- Legend of Legacy basically did the latter to very little success, which is why it's usually not spoken highly of

Here's how I'd describe it though: It's linear with highly customizable characters and eventually you get a bigass airship with an entire world-spanning guild in it, and you ADVENTURE recruiting NPCs to join your crew+guild while they help you in combat by nuking shit and other minor conveniences
Also you get a loli piloting a mech and a talking penguin as party members

Problem with Legend of Legacy is that while it had a good foundation for something it's like the workers decided to not work anymore after setting the foundation and never built the building.

It had the makings of a good game but between the barebones story, characters, extreme grinding and RNG for everything, and so on it came up short.

But you get a really big airship you can explore in addition to all that, which is what does it for me

If there was just one thing I loved about Suikoden or Skies of Arcadia, it was gathering a bunch of people you've met to follow you on your journey

Please tell me they took out that stupid ass pop-up shit that blocked your view every fucking step. Also, please tell me that combat doesn't revolve around elemental tug-of-war still.

More yes than no; roles give you % bonuses to certain actions, which I'm pretty sure was how tLoL did it too
You can unlock more than the base attack/defense/support later on though, and make your own formations so you can assign any role to any party member however you want
This means yeah, it's still only defenders that can guard for the whole party and such if that was what your problem was

Also of significance, the thing where you'd fill out maps by hugging walls is gone too
You just find or buy maps now
but those are all the major differences I can think of

The reason to be excited for this is the guy that did Suikoden wrote this. Get your priorities straight.

Is it anything like Radiata Stories? One anon mentioned the recruitable NPCs and it immediately caught my attention considering the art style. The game looks really interesting but since I never played anything that fulfilled my NPC autism needs quite like it being anything like that would make this an instant buy.

I love early SaGa games but I dropped Legend of Legacy in the desert.

Was there more to it if I kept playing? Is there more to this game?

I really, really want to like these games. Octopath is scratching my SaGa itch but I want more. Help me love these games.

It's a game by Masataka Matsuura, creator/director/writer of the first three Suikoden games. Had faith this game would turn out at least good. It ended up getting great reviews in nip land.

The desert is a completely optional area containing a series of ridiculously powerful enemies and some superbosses. You can skip it if you want. I could tell you where to go if you want, but I'm not sure if you'd want to anyway. There is a cool final boss and the mini boss right before it is good for getting a nice trinket for NG+ if you can properly speedkill it (it's only got around 10k health, maybe less).

I just wanted more from the characters and story progression than I was getting, I guess, is there more of that? It kinda felt like people just randomly joined your party then existed as functions and nothing more, and the story was just you guys doing some shit with no characters along the way. I don't know how that's -that- different from SaGa games other than not seeing people like Ki, your Dad, the Kings etc. but it was really putting me out.

Please do tell me what I missed, I was hype as fuck for the game UI have the collector box sitting in my display case and everything but I barely played it.

Do you mean the giant one in the mirage area? Anyway yeah, that area will tear you apart, you really need to have a good party to take even regular enemies down. Wraithfangs are a regular enemy and typically mean instant gameover if you're unlucky, and Lamia in particular screw you unless you managed to snag a Heart Emblem from the Wanderlust at the top of the one area.
As far as the story goes it's mostly told through those little singing stones, you're supposed to write them down and stick it together like a puzzle. For the in-present story, the only ones that have much relevance as far as I remember are Eloise, who has a cutscene when you sleep at the inn a certain amount of times, and Bianca, who is an important character lore wise if you pieced together the story. Filmia has some stuff too but otherwise it is mostly their end and beginnings with anything in that way. There's also a special ending involving Coco. Some small extra dialogue is there but for the most part the characters don't say much. The last area also requires a second playthrough if you want to see all the dialogue of the God-People.
