It's been only three years at this point, OP. Plus, Nintendo has other games that are being spotlighted right now.

I think at this point Nintendo is just going to go for an entirely new Smash Bros game and will wait at least until SSB4 is 5 years old to release it. Earliest they will announce it is at E3 next year. If dev time is good, it will be released in 2019. If the team working on it continues the tradition of being slowpokes then we'll get it in 2020.

It's really kind of a good thing if they don't make Smash 5 for a few more years. Let them polish it up and focus on other, fresher games, and also gain more new IPs to use as characters in the roster. And hopefully they nuke Cloud and Bayonetta to make space for better characters.

If you want to play Smash 4, just boot up the Wii U and play it.
