It didn't become good until Persona 3 and even then the series was very flawed. Good Persona didn't get acceptable dungeons until Persona 5.

The original Nier doesn't really have any significant flaws outside of balancing though. And that's remedied by not playing on Easy or Hard.
Everything else is just Zelda with high quality storytelling.

Automata had worse storytelling but better combat so it balanced out. In any case, while the games are nearly as polished as the Persona titles are, I genuinely do believe they are not only good games, but better overall than the Persona titles.

I don't really know what isn't satisfying about it. Bosses were all unique and some of them utilized the environment as part of their fights. Nothing was too easy or too hard, and most of your magic skills were all useful on top of the melee combat. The melee combat itself offered two methods of attacks that had fast movement and several different types of weapons to suit various playstyles (though in the end Spears wound up superior to everything else due to speed and power). The side quests while fairly standard sidequests were benefitted by the dialogue they offered between the various characters as well as additions to what the player learns about other characters in the world (for example, the quest to get Devola/Popola to sing in the bar). The sidequests also benefitted in their simplicity in that they helped emphasize the fact that Nier would do anything for the sake of his daughter no matter how mundane. I suppose that might come off as a cop-out though.

The incomplete storytelling though...What else needs to be said within the confines of the original Nier itself? The player only learns as much as Papa Nier and Kaine know, and that was good for pushing the twist discovered in the second playthrough as to the reality of what the Shades actually were.

That's a good dilemma. You can absolutely drop FES' extra scenario since it's pretty bad, especially after the main game's ending. FES indeed has locations in full 3D and free movement around them, which is more immersive than P3P's flat bacgrounds with cursor over them, but that also makes P3P play faster.
P3P also has some QoL improvements like direct control over party members and the ability to choose inherited skills during fusion, which spares you from tapping beween screens ad nauseum when optimizing personas.
P3P also lets you play as a femprotag, but that should be of no consequence unless you're a girl or homosexual.
I don't have a definite answer, but I hope I provided you with enough details for you to choose.

He really isn't from both a story and gameplay view. Story wise he beat Mem Aleph AND Demiurge while being a ordinary human. Every other mainline protagonist has some kind chosen one bullshit to a degree. Gameplay wise if you get the best equipment he can fuck shit up. For me I always get the meteor dragoon or peacemaker which have moan bullet, it does multiple medium almighty damage. While fighting Mem Aleph he would hit up for 1,000 damage against her.
